Interesting experience, but I did not feel like what I paid matched what I got. It’s not that they don’t give you plenty, it’s more that $20 per person is simply too much for breakfast.
What we liked:
- The donuts were actually phenomenal, I’ve never had anything quite like them.
What we didn’t like:
- None of the other foods matched the quality of the donuts. Nothing was bad, just passable.
- The orange juice was almost room temperature.
- We had to pay $3 for our baby eating tiny scraps of our food.
- You have to pay up front before you’re even seated.

A great restaurant that is a tradition for decades. The donuts starts it all. The food is hot, fresh and tasty. The staff are quick to replace whatever you want more of. Don't miss going here while you are in the Wisconsin Dells. Great souvenir shop!

We visited this restaurant for the first time for a group gathering, and unfortunately, the service was very disappointing from the start. When we arrived, I mentioned to the hostess that we were there for a party, but she responded with visible frustration and said, “I don’t know what that means,” which immediately made the interaction uncomfortable. Instead of simply explaining that we needed to wait outside until our group arrived, she made it feel like we were inconveniencing her.
When our group of 12 was finally seated, we were placed at a table that could only comfortably fit about eight people. My father, who uses an oxygen tank, was hanging off the end, and there still weren’t enough seats for everyone. When we asked if there was another option, we were met with more defensiveness and short answers like, “We’re not sitting there,” instead of a polite explanation about staffing or table availability.
Throughout the meal, the same dismissive tone continued. Simple requests—like ordering additional drinks—were met with attitude or frustration. For the cost of dining here, the experience fell far below expectations.
It’s a shame, because we were looking forward to enjoying a nice meal with our family, but the lack of kindness, flexibility, and professionalism from the staff completely set the wrong tone. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, because first-time guests shouldn’t leave feeling unwelcome or embarrassed for not knowing “the rules.”

This has been a go-to for a very long time for me and the family. It is so iconic. All you can eat, great log cabin feel! The staff is always so dedicated and attentive. The apple cider donuts are incredible and worth stopping by and grabbing, even if you're not eating breakfast there.
It's a must when you're in the dells.

Thoroughly enjoyed the family-style breakfast & lodge atmosphere at Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty. We had a group of 11 and yet were seated quickly. The food was great & the servers refilled the plates promptly. It’s a wonderful place for families with children, as kids can eat as much or as little as they want. We’ll return every time we’re in the area!

Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty was family style dining. There were three rooms filled with people. The food was delivered to each table by a dedicated person. We had a waiter named Wyatt. Food was refilled based on request. The food is very fulfilling, so it is easy to get full fast. There were add on menu items available for purchase. There was also a gift shop on site. There was a long line when we arrived, but multiple people worked the line so that it moved quickly.

Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty is a must try when visiting the Dells. The restaurant has a rustic feel to it. It is all you can eat. The doughnuts are made fresh daily and are some of the best I have ever eaten. It gets very busy with long lines on the weekends so make sure to arrive as early as possible. Highly recommend!

The staff we're absolutely amazing from the moment we walked in and very friendly. Our server was busy but so attentive to us making sure we didn't need anything. I loved that it was all you can eat. The donuts we're cooked fresh and so good. We stopped at the gift shop on our way out which had so much to choose from. We will definitely be back the next time we're in the area.

Texas taste here, I say no to Paul…overpriced for breakfast not a buffet serving. Servers bring buffet style food, although most is good, others not so good! Have to say some of the best biscuits and gravey I’ve eaten, coffee reminds me of the tire we blew out in the interstate…thinking “where’s my Waffle House”!

Waitress was not happy to be working there. Never smiled and clearly didn’t want to serve us. Spent her time in the kitchen filling sugar containers - I watched her do this for at least 10 minutes. She walked by our table a few times to assist other tables but didn’t make eye contact with anyone at our table and went back to filling napkins, etc. we finally asked another waitress for more water and food and I apologized to her for asking telling we know she wasn’t our waitress but we weren’t being helped. That lady was great and got us what we needed. At that point our waitress come back and scolded us and told us that she was our waitress and she would get us what we needed. This lady should not be in this role - she clearly didn’t want to be there. The food was food and we will be back, but if we get that waitress again - we will leave.

We went and had their breakfast and it was very good! For whatever reason, the pancakes were incredible and the eggs were some of the best scrambled eggs I've had at a restaurant. My only gripe is that they ask if you want a fruit cup but don't mention that they are $7/cup. The fruit was very good and fresh but that's a steep price, in my opinion.

It wasent bad. But I wouldn't go back. Food was hot and quick but nothing great. Doughnuts were the best. Table seat 8 and you will have to share. Me and my son were put on the inside so you have to hope the people sharing the table are respectful. Busy can be loud 20$ per person.

The atmosphere is nice. We were told the building had been mostly kept the same since when it was first built. You definitely get the vibes they were going for. Our server are good and service was prompt. Food was normal but the buttermilk donuts were amazing. The breakfast buffet includes unlimited pancake, sausage & ham, potatoes, scramble eggs and a selection of drinks. You can ask for more of any you wanted.
Honestly, I would say the buffet is pricey. Most of the breakfast food serves are fairly cheap stuff and you can really only eat so much. $21++ is a high price for it. But, I do feel its worth it if your are visiting the area to just get the experience. Probably not worth returning without a coupon or something to reduce the price.

We are on a family vacation. This is our time here. The place looks amazing. The food was good. The waiters were very good. The price was a little high but not more than other tourists attractions. We had a large group with kids. The front deck people were very rude to start off with. We had never been here before and didn't know we had to pay first. The waiter offered to seat us so we were seated and the front end people demanded us to all get up and return to the front counter. The paying adult were at the front counter to pay but they insisted all return to the front. The person said she felt we were trying to cheat them. We were not. Just wasn't aware of how they did things and the waiter seated us. Food was good, atmosphere was great. Front counter people sucked. Also if you have a larger group prepare to pay 20% tip up front.

Stopped in for brunch with the family and luckily got seated right away since the rush had passed. Unfortunately, that’s about where the good experience ended.
Our server was totally inattentive and honestly felt like she didn’t want to be there. We waited a long time with empty drinks and plates with no sign of her, and eventually had to ask another server just to find her so we could get refills and a second round of food. When she finally came back, she brushed it off with a weak excuse about needing to handle something in the back—meanwhile, our section was quite empty and we’d been sitting there for over 15 minutes.
By the time the food finally came, we weren’t even hungry anymore.
What really left a bad taste though? You have to pay before you’re seated, and tip is included upfront. We tipped generously expecting decent service, but honestly, if tipping had been based on how things went, it would’ve been a hard zero.
It’s saving grace is the food but for how pricey this place is, the food is OK at best, and we expected way better service. Super disappointing.

I should have read the reviews. Lets start off with service. Our waitress was excellent! Friendly and prompt! She was fast! The atmosphere was ok, I guess. I had know idea our table would be pushed against a table where they sat another nice couple. So, it kinda felt a little less relaxing and private for an intimate family breakfast. But I let it slide because they were nice people. We ended up chatting with them about the different food places in the area at the end. Now, lets get to the food. The OJ was watered down and the coffee was weak. The gravy I heard was ok from everyone else but the biscuits were hard. The eggs were ok but oily? And the breakfast potatoes were oily as well. They are using the unhealthy oils. I wish more places would get with the program. It's not healthy nor tasty. However, the waitress did tell me they get 350 to 400 table from 7am to 12pm. Thats pretty good considering there are much more tastier and healthier options like the Bella Goose Cafe. I had the gluten free waffle. It was dry and tasteless. I dont recommend. My favorite item was the fruit cup and I know they only cut that up. They didnt make it themselves. My husband did say," the pancakes were ok but the syrup was pretty chemically tasting, I might as well bring a bottle of propylene glycol and dump it on my pancakes." Maybe they can make some serious changes in the future to offer a healthier and more tasty option for people.

This was a cool all you can eat restaurant. It was not a buffet, the waiter brought you out extra portions. However, I did not like the only brought out little tiny refills at a time. Not in love. Charge an additional 3.00 for chocolate milk (white milk is free) and not all you can drink unless it's the free (which i wasn't informed of before seating).
Tip cash at table. (My waitress didnt deserve the tip I put on my card).
All you can eat? My waitress asked if the first bites were good and never seen her again. I was one of the last customers of the day, but felt like I was kind of pushed out. $50 for 2 people..
Should have went to Dennys.
Eggs, sausage, ham, pancakes, biscuits and gravy and fried potatoes. If you want bacon, go somewhere else. And got to share a table.

It’s a very expensive breakfast. I brought kids ages 8, 11 and 14. We paid over $50 just for those kids who ate 3 donuts, 5 pancakes and a little sausage and ham. It’s totally not worth the price. Food wasn’t that good. A lot of it came out cold. They bring very small portions. Donuts tasted a day old. They gave us about 6oz of juice and didn’t refill it. I had to ask our waiter several times to bring more potatoes, he kept forgetting he said.
I was very unimpressed. The gift shop was the only thing we really enjoyed here.

Horrible representation of what it used to be. Maybe the fact that I remember what it was is the fact the current version disappoints. I worked at Paul Bunyan in 1974 when I was 16. I worked hard there, but had a lot of fun too, a nice job for a high school kid. For some time afterwards a friend/coworker and I would visit Paul Bunyan and have breakfast every few summers for old times’ sake. Unfortunately that friend passed away, and my trips to Paul Bunyan ceased.
Recently, my twin brother was visiting from out of state and he mentioned that he’d like to have breakfast there, never having been, so we stopped in the restaurant on a busy Thursday morning.
I’m happy to say that for the most part everything was just as I remembered it. The food was great, as was the service. And as we were leaving, I got a pretty good look around. It was nice to see that things really had not changed much, and for just a moment it was as though I was back in 1974 working that fun job. It made me very happy.

It's a hyped up local equivalent of cracker barrel, with a variety of severely overpriced but unique products and accessories.
The environment is pretty much like a dining hall at a summer camp.
The so-called "all you can eat" experience is just hyped up tiny portions brought to your table with no quality whatso ever. It's not worth the price for breakfast. You'd be better off eating at a real breakfast buffet like Golden Coral. They serve you literal buffet quality food.
The only unique thing they have is their donut, which they hardly ever bring you, and their potatoes literally feel like eating a plate of burnt crispy greased soaked rocks and glass with seashells with the unexpected pain it constantly causes.
The servers are also pretty blind when refilling your portions; even when you call out to them, taking their sweet time getting to you, it gets very depressing like you're unworthy of their time and money.
Especially unfit for serving those who eat solo because the rest of the family prefer the IHOP across the street. A decision that I wish I had made at the time myself, too.

Was on a family vacation picked up a puzzle to look at pulled it straight out and a glass apparently was so close it fell off the shelf two inches from the floor. I didn’t even touch it! I had to pay for it!!😡 I would have spent 100 plus and the rest of my family would have spent money too! Never ever will I go there again!!

Nothing beats a Paul Bunyan's breakfast! I have never been here for dinner, but have had their breakfast as a yearly family tradition and it's a highlight of the Dells.

Went here as a kid and loved it. Took my kids here and they also loved it! The whole place has a distinct vibe that makes it so fun. Even for picky eaters, there are enough options within the food they service that everyone can find something they like.
We got there around 8 and did not have to wait but by the time we left there was a line out the door.

Stopped at Paul Bunyan's for breakfast on the 4th of July. I was glad the restaurant was open. The line was short, and we were seated very quickly. Our food was excellent, the waitress was great, and I enjoyed myself. Pleasantly surprised that so many employees were on-site during a major holiday.

Service was great and the food came quick. The eggs, pancakes, sausage, and kielbasa are delicious. I was so excited for the doughnuts and they were horrible! So many good reviews on them but they just tasted like grease. I couldn't even swallow a bite! Bathrooms weren't the cleanest but I understand they devote all of the available man power to serving the never ending wave of consumers.
If it was still $15 per person I would come back here without a doubt. At $20 per person not so sure.

The food is really good. Wish I would have known that it was $19 when the online price showed $12. They charged me for my 11 month old who didn't eat anything. They charged me extra for ice coffee but never stated it was extra. They charged me for a small cup of fruit big enough for one person, never said it was extra, and asked if we wanted a BOWL of fruit for the TABLE. Would recommend going, but beware of extra charges.

They sure have their breakfast nailed down. The service was quick, the food was good. The atmosphere was as you expect it to be. I have been here more than once and every time I go back to the Dells will continue to go at least once while on the trip. As a final note, their donuts are delicious and melt in your mouth.

First time here and it was amazing. The food is really good if you like breakfast food. Family oriented. Service was amazing and food came out fast. Dianne was so kind at the gift shop and explained to me how they have been in business for 70 years. She said the key to success is family and treating people with love. I’m definitely coming back again.

Go for the donuts alone. Then just go ahead and buy some on your way out. I regret that I didn't. Food was excellent. I only docked a star simply because apparently Paul Bunyan didn't serve bacon at his restaurant. (Which is honestly fine since the rest of the food was so delicious.)
