Let's keep this as "real" as I can. Told some friends we are going to Prairie Du Chien for the weekend: I was told I had to visit Stark's and Pete's!! Pete's was so overhyped that I was expecting this "once in a lifetime" burger that it would be life changing! (it wasn't) that said it was very good BUT not worth the hour and 10 mins standing in line. My advice, if the line is short go get 1 or 2 burgers (don't ask for cheese) if the lines are long come back later.

Just not my thing, seems more nostalgic than good, if burgers with a lot of onions are your thing, great. Honestly glad I did get to try it but will not be going back.

Like a trip into the "Good ol' days", no confusion @ the menu, with or without onions as well as ketchup and mustard. Not to bad on the wallet as well. Definitely worth stopping by, but do it before the weekend of Oct 20, cause they close for the season.

If you are anywhere near Pete's you MUST try the burgers there! Your choices are with or without (meaning with grilled onion or no grilled onion). You can add ketchup and mustard if you want. The buns they used are made locally. There is just something super delicious with those burgers on the fresh buns.

The workers were as nice as could be, atmosphere was dope. The burgers are surprisingly good and flavorful considering they're just boiled in onion water. I recommend getting them with onions and spicy mustard.

It was our first time there and the burgers were so good!! We had to wait until the next batch of burgers were made, but it was worth the wait!! It was a beautiful day outside and enjoyed talking to the other people that were in line, too. Can't wait to go back next year!! I recommend adding the onions and the brown mustard instead of yellow. It just gave it that extra flavor.

Pretty darned good. It was a not a big tourist day, yet there was always a line. I Said I didn't want onions, got onions anyway, which I like, however they were swimming in grease. Otherwise, a pretty good burger.

For what they are they were good for sure. Just hamburgers and onions with 3 condiments options. Gotta watch out for that bottom bun. Gets soggy from the grease and juices. A fun experience to have if your around that area.

I read all the hype about these burgers being a must try and one of the best they have ever had. I looked forward all summer to making the trip to go try it out on one of the days they were open. (After making it in error earlier in the year when they weren’t. If you go, realize it’s a semi seasonal stand, and in while season they are only open Fri-Sun with some holiday exceptions.)
We finally had a free weekend day again with nothing to do and drove 2 hours for what we were sure was going to be a life changing burger based on the hype. (It almost borders on a cult like following!)
I was a little skeptical based on the fact that the burgers are boiled………but with people claiming you had to try it to believe it, I figured any place still in business this long deserved the benefit of the doubt. I was also a little excited by the prospect of a place brave enough to not only boil hamburgers, but to also offer them only 2 ways: with or without onions. No cheese, no lettuce, no tomato, nothing else. After all, if your menu is that singular AND you boil the burger there must be some kind of hidden ingredient, spice, magic pixie dust or maybe even boiling water from the fountain of youth……something.
In my mind, no one in the universe simply boils hamburgers if there isn’t a catch.
When we arrived we were stoked! Sure enough, there was a long line on both sides of the stand and that’s always a good sign for someone trying a new place! After about a 15 minute wait with no movement, the line suddenly started moving rapidly. (They cook all the burgers in one giant batch at a time and are then able to serve them quickly until they are gone. If you don’t get one, presumably you have to wait for the next big batch to be ready. No big deal, we got ours on the 1st batch we waited for.)
After giving our preference of onions or not (also boiled), you could also request ketchup, yellow mustard, or brown mustard.
We got our bag of burgers and made our way to the park nearby on the river and pulled into a spot ready to have our lives transformed! With Gracie, our ever hungry Pitty in the back seat eagerly watching and hoping we wouldn’t like them we took our 1st bites. Hmm. Then our 2nd. Waited for the magic to kick in………gave it a 3rd, and then knew Gracie’s patience was about to pay off.
We were eating boiled burgers. They tasted exactly as they looked. Not bad, just kinda ok. Not really seasoned with anything, just kinda boiled. The bun was actually very good. Soft and fresh, but also a bit soggy on the bottom with boiled hamburger water soaked in. I ended up wishing I’d asked for extra ketchup and mustard on mine to give it some more flavor. It vaguely reminded me of a White Castle or Krystal burger but thicker. Probably/usually amazingly good when you are drunk, but not so amazing sober.
We each ate one to make sure nothing magical kicked in unexpectedly at the end (it didn’t), then scraped the onions off and made Gracie the happiest pit bull in WI with our 2nd burgers. (She’s spoiled and there was another place we wanted to try if the burgers weren’t amazing enough to eat 2 each.)
Overall, we thought they were ok. They weren’t bad by any means, and you can get worse elsewhere I’m sure. It’s just that they tasted exactly like what you would imagine a boiled on a cast iron cooktop hamburger to taste like. I sooo wanted it to be more though.

If you are a carnivore and find yourself hungry while in Prarie du Chien, stop by this classic hamburger stand! There are no hard decisions to be made- yes/no onions on your burger, and which condiments would you like. We were lucky and did not have to wait in a line. The burgers were served quickly, they were juicy and hot. We stood in nearby shade to enjoy. My husband went back for a second one…

This cozy little place feels entirely out of time. Walking up to the window of this tiny stand felt like walking 50 years into the past, but in a good way, a very nostalgic way.
I wasn't sure what to expect, and so I told them (a lovely older couple and a young man) I'd never been there before. The young man took the time to politely explain the menu to me, as simple as it is. Here it is: Burgers are served with or without onions, and you can have your onions fried or raw (I went with fried, they really pile them on!). The burgers do not come with cheese, but you can order them without a bun. The only sides offered are bagged frito-lays potato chips and canned soda. I was slightly disappointed to see they didn't offer fries at all. But, when you've been running a place this long, I trust that you know what you're doing.
The burger was really good, but not great, and it had sort of a sweet tangy taste that made me feel like they used worcestershire sauce and possibly coca-cola for the deglaze. The burgers are all served well done (fine by me). I went with sour cream and onion potato chips and an A&W soda. The soda was warm, but hey, it's summer. We were able to get two meals for under $20, which feels like pretty good value to me.
Overall, this is a definite must-see and must try, even if it's just for the novelty of it.
A few notes: The stand is walk-up only and has no dedicated seating available, although there are benches along the road outside.

We really enjoy Pete's. The burgers are so juicy and fresh. Plus the price is reasonable. Probably the only negative is the fact they're so popular that there can be lines at times, waiting to get a burger. And if they happen to run out it takes up to 50 minutes for them to have more, at least that's what happened today. Oh, and they do not have any seating at all. There are some benches on main street if they're available when you're there.

This is a great seasonal old fashioned burger stand. 72 and sunny today and the line was almost around the corner At just after noon. No seating, just burgers, with or without fried onions. Topped with your choice, Ketchup, Brown Mustard, yellow mustard, salt and Pepper. We did the burgers with onions, Salt & Pepper, Ketchup, and both mustards. They were delicious and hot. It is definitely a place to try if you are anywhere near Southwestern Wisconsin.

Pete's is an institution..one of those places people check off their list. You wait in line (for well over an hour in our case) for a burger that just really isn't that good. They're running on momentum at this point. Not worth the wait unless you really want to be able to say you ate there.

This place was highly recommended by a coworker if I was passing through the area and I gotta say I was skeptical at first when he told me about them and when I arrived. Like others have stated the menu is as simple as it gets, burgers and chips. I must say though the burgers were extremely delicious and I could have polished off a half dozen! For sure worth the stop if you're passing through and the service was very friendly and informative. No seating at the location as it's just a simple stand but you can just drive a couple blocks down like we did and enjoy your meal in the gorgeous and spacious park. We will be back and happy 110th!!

No seating except for a couple of public benches.
Limited hours, best check their Facebook page.
2 choices either with or without onions.
The staff is very friendly and hard working. The burgers taste like something straight out of my childhood.
If you are in the area or passing through try Pete's for a one-of-a-kind experience!
But be patient, as the line can be long and they can only serve so many burgers at a time.

This is a unique experience. There is just one flat top grill and due to the way they are made, there cannot be a continuous flow of burgers. They have to be made all at the same time. This means they come out in batches and if your timing is bad you may need to wait 15 minutes for the next batch. I would say the burgers are worth the wait. I tried them plain, with mustard and with ketchup and mustard. My favorite was with just mustard. Overall, it's worth a stop if you're in the area. The burgers are good and if you have to wait there's a good chance you'll have good conversation to pass the time.

We were traveling through town on 5.3.24 a little after 11:00 opening and the first batch was about sold out. A short wait for the next batch, but we were able to watch them cook it all, just like at the state fairs. We were able to talk to the head chef, dish washer, and direction giver for the tourists.
Well worth the wait and conversations with those of us waiting.
I wouldn’t call it a boiled burger more of a hybrid between flat top grilled like in the old diners made and White Castle/Alpine Burgers but much larger (1/4-1/3 lbs before cooking is my guess) but without the holes.

It must be the history that people enjoy because the burger was bland on taste. It is neat place but the 2 burgers and 2 waters we bought definitely wasn't worth the $15 we spent. I get it's a no frills place, but a little salt and pepper for some kind of taste would be nice. It literally tastes like a burger patty that you just threw in a frying pan at home with absolutely no seasoning, added a cup of water, then boiled it till it was gray all the way through Cool history, 🫤 burger.

A tourist favorite. Mainly because it's seasonal. Burgers are small, not seasoned, cooked in onion water. Enjpy.

This burger is in the "old school bland" category BUT it's still somehow tasty even with what appears to be no browning on the surface like it's steamed. The whole thing is tender, not salty so the flavor of the beef comes through with those onions. Dang it this is begging for some cheese though, I'm bringing my own slices with me next time ;)
Update: I brought cheese slices and it was just too much. Cheese detracts from this one, they know what they're doing.
