Have been sitting here for over a hour waiting for our food. While they have put out 3 large to-go orders, while the customers actually sitting in the restaurant wait for OVER a hour!!! Garbage practice! Will not be back. Wasted our time!!!

Just watched a video on the employees blowing up because a tourist is filming. This is America. Where you can record whatever you’d like in public. It’s pathetic watching ALL the workers get worked up over a video. They literally stopped everything they was doing and it’s laughable as a business 👍🏼

Stopped for breakfast with my dad. Had a spinach and feta omelet with hash browns and toast. One of the best omelets I've had. The spinach was fresh and the cook was perfect, hash browns were well seasoned and cooked just like I like them. Service was great. Wish we had a spot like this closer to home.

We stopped here on our way to the Dells for lunch. It was after 12:30 and we had a larger group, but they were still so accommodating in letting us sit down to eat. The staff was very kind and the food was outstanding! We will definitely stop again (and try to arrive earlier).

I was new to town this year. I very quickly made The Portage Cafe my breakfast spot. I developed a great relationship with a lot of the staff and would come in at least once a week!! Kelly, one of the servers, complimented my earrings one day. I make jewelry as well as a few other things and asked if she wanted to commission a pair. She said yes, she wanted me to make a set of earrings for her coworker. I agreed to her request and immediately went and bought the colors she requested as well as special hooks for their ears. I had them done and ready a few weeks before Christmas and I even made Kelly a pair for free because she was my favorite server. I handed the earrings to Kelly and she said “I’m really busy today can I pay you when I see you next?” I said “of course” I got breakfast and left. I came back next week. Kelly came up to me and said “hey we’ve been super slow this week, I don’t have the money to pay you” I said “okay I understand I can come back next week” I came back again. At this point I’m starting to get worried she isn’t going to pay me. I said “kelly, I don’t know when I’ll be in again can we please settle up on the earrings you commissioned” and she said “yeah of course” she goes and gets a $10 bill. The materials to make these earrings cost me $23.74 I spent close to 6 hours hand crafting them. And I spent an additional 6 hours making her a pair because I liked her!! And she gave me $10. I told her “kelly those earrings are not worth $10” and she said “I’ll give you more next time I see you” next time I see her I come in and say “kelly do you have intention of paying me for my art” she said “yes I just had problems with bills, slow month, etc. etc.” I said “you clearly just got your nails done Kelly.” And she had, a perfect fresh manicure. She said “they’re just press ons” I said “press ons cost money too Kelly and that’s not a need that’s a want, you need to pay me for my art.” She said “I will” I said “when? Because I have come in her consistently once a week, bought food, tipped well all for the chance that she would pay me just to keep walking all over me and pocketing my tips. If she saved up my tips alone for two weeks she could’ve payed me. I said “Kelly why would you ask me to make something for your friend, when you knew you couldn’t pay for it” and she said “ I will pay you” I said “I can’t keep coming in here and loosing money so please take my phone number and give me a call when you have the rest of the money. That was 3 months ago. Kelly. I’m 22. I have a mortgage to pay with my boyfriend. I have bills. I have to eat. And I still spent money I didn’t have on materials for earrings you asked for. You have my number, I’m still actively waiting for you to make this right, when you do I will remove the review. Until then just so everyone knows, this company (specifically Kelly) is okay with stealing from young artists.

I drive by this cafe everyday on my way to work but never have time to stop, until today. They were so welcoming and friendly when I came in. I ordered biscuits and gravy and some loaded hadhbrowns. They paid special attention to the fact that I was taking it to go and told me how long to heat up my biscuits for an excellent meal. It was all very tasty. I'll definitly return when I have time to stop.

Disappointed! 2 days in a row I tried to go eat lunch. The cafe was at about half capacity for the lunch crowd. Sat at the counter. Seemed like the cook could only cook 1 table/order at a time. Regardless of the size of the order. Waited about 20 minutes, told the cook to cancel my cheeseburger and left. Today I went in at 12:50 p.m. 2 tables were occupied with customers. The cook was standing down near the grill that they were closed. Hours on the door hours on the door said they didn't close till 1:30 pm he did not offer why they were closed and I did not ask, I left again for the second day in a row and ate some where else. Whatever is going on there, I hope they figure it out.

The Portage Cafe is an old-timey diner with down-home hospitality. I was in town visiting family and was pleasntly surprised by the experience. The place ran uber-efficiently with just two people on staff. The food was delicious and the ambience was friendly and relaxed. The overall vibe was perfect. I look forward to my next visit.

We didn’t even eat, I have never been treated so badly by an establishment simply for walking into an open restaurant in my life. After being rudely told they were not supposed to be open but still seated we waited. The man came to take out drink orders but we had been focused on ordering food because of how we were made to feel we had not even thought about drinks. The man put his hand in one of our faces making circling gestures annoyed then huffed away because we didn’t order fast enough for him. We had 7 people with 3 kids. We ended up just leaving. There was no reason to treat us that badly. If they did not want to take more table they could have said they were closed.

We were on vacation in Wisconsin Dells, but the hotel and other restaurants had ridiculously long lines for breakfast. We then decided to hop in the car and drive away to find a place where the locals go to instead of a tourist trap. I'm glad we did. We found Portage, WI, and the Portage Cafe. Nice cafe with the original bar stools from the 1940's, so quaint. I only remember our server's name, Kelly, but everyone in there were welcoming. When our plate with eggs, sausage, and hashbrowns arrived, you could feel the aroma of it being cooked in real butter. Mouthwatering! The portions are just right, the coffee delicious, and it was a great little gem to be explored.

Do not come in here expecting a hipster vibe and brand new facilities. What you’re going to get is AMAZING service and THE BEST food in a clean space that’s clearly been a part of this community for a really long time.
We were passing through on our way home to MKE from Mauston and bypassed the Dells to get a less crowded and more home-cooked menu. This was 🤌 perfect. We had to wait about 3 minutes while they cleared a literally as-we-walked-in-they-got-up table but the three staff (yes, THREE) were HUSTLING.
We each had the special: 2 eggs + 2 pancakes or French toast + meat for under $10. In 2024!! A meal for under $10! Coffee was fresh and hot, nothing special but not bad either. Food was seriously yummy. Just like my grandma makes - light and fluffy French toast and pancakes, perfectly scrambled, unadulterated eggs and the sausage was like what I get from my local butcher.
I cannot say enough good things about the team working. They. Never. Stopped. Moving. Made each customer feel like the star. My coffee was never more than half empty (big cups too, not 8-Oz teacups).
Lots of awesome vintage and antique decor. I love looking at old tins and kitchen hand appliances, the way our grandparents had to make food.
Stop in today!!!

The food was ok. The service was great..but...the cook talked very loud (almost obnoxiously) and was extremely slow. He complained loudly about all the orders he had. Not very big on writing reviews but 51 mins for some French toast and scrambled eggs is way too long!

We are faithful Sunday regulars that LOVE coming into The Portage Cafe. We typically work in Madison during the week and cannot stop in as much as we’d like. With that in mind, imagine how happy we were to discover that The Portage Cafe was open on the 4th of July!!! YAY! We normally interact with Tammy, Kelly and Brian. Today however, we watched the male cook (don’t know his name) bark orders at Kelly and Brian, and even told a customer that he was done cooking for the day at 11:05 AM, so Kelly had to turn the customer away!!! They were to close at Noon for the Holiday. It was uncomfortable. At 11:20 AM there were more people that wanted to come in and again, Kelly had to tell them they were closing early for the Holiday. Kelly tried telling him that my husband likes his corned beef hash crispy, so he could put it down on the grill early. The cook ignored her altogether. He did one order at a time. We did wait 40 mins for our order and although there was a DoorDash order or two that came in, there was only one other table and two people at the counter besides my husband and me. Tammy, we love you, Kelly and Brian… but we’re not thrilled with the guy you have cooking during the week. It felt uncomfortable to be there watching him treat customers, Brian and Kelly like he did.

Twenty-five years ago this place was owned by a man named Dennis. He ran a tight ship, and did most of the cooking himself. The place was always packed with local business owners and others who would shoot the breeze over breakfast or lunch. The food and service were top notch. Today I ate here, and was quite disappointed. It took about 12 minutes to get my eggs and hashbrowns, even though there were only three customers. The eggs and potatoes were barely hot, though cooked correctly. Did they serve them on a frozen plate, or did the cook let them sit around before sending them out? The coffee is terrible. In this age of awesome coffees, you'd think they could step up. They refill their ketchup and mustard bottles, attested to by the dirty, greasy labels. The ketchup bottle was filthy, with dried ketchup here and there. It had no expiration date, but the date on the mustard was 10 months ago. The plastic placemat had streaks of food on it. The men's room had no coat hook. The booths are a bit tight. The benches are maybe 1.5" too close to the tables. They play music from the 1950's exclusively. All in all it was a dismal experience.

So we usually Love this breakfast place! The past 3 times have been under whelping! They ran out of country fried steak x2 (my husband's favorite), portions of corned beef hash and Hashbrowns were smaller. Cheese on Hashbrowns were not melted, waitress had to take them off our plate and reheat in microwave which made them less crispy! We were patient both times but the last time of "the truck didn't come so no country fried steak and only one more order of Hashbrowns. " we left and went elsewhere. We bithsaud "It seems like they are going out of business!" Very disappointed!

Excellent little cafe, pretty much what you would expect from a small town diner. Nice folks, only reason even took a star off for service is they can run long if they get busy. If you have time for a nice long meal, its perfect.

Popped in for a late breakfast. It's a cozy, little establishment. There was only one other table occupied when I arrived. It took 3 or 4 minutes before I was offered a drink, I had to repeatedly ask for coffee refills. My omelette was bland as were the small serving of potatoes. I was overcharged a small amount but prefered to just pay and exit.

I was warmly treated ever since my first time I ate here. The eggs benedict and tuna melts are second to none. Kelly the waitress and Kevin and Casey are first rate cooks. I have always felt at home eating here, and made some new friends in the process. If you want great food, and great conversations, stop by! This place is the place to be in downtown Portage!

We like to stop and eat here, but today was not a good day for it. Ordered an omelet with ham, green peppers, and cheese. Was loaded with green peppers, but no ham. Waitress never checked on us. Maybe less chatting between workers might help!

Waited over 1/2 hour for our food. Gave our order to someone else. Had to ask for coffee twice. Creamer was old and curdled. Brought wrong toast. Food mediocre. No apologies for anything. No discount in our bill. Not friendly.

Had an amazing time in this small town Cafe.
Unlike most cafes I have been to, the chef cooked right next to the customers. There was laughter, stories, and great food to be shared by all.
The food itself has a home cooked feel to it. I had a medium rare steak with over easy eggs, and hash browns. It was cooked just right, with just enough spice on it.
The cafe itself has a diner feel to it that most diners would strive to have. Everything in there just felt right and homey. I honestly hope to go back there one day for the experience.

On a almost two month road trip takes us through historic towns and we happened to find this restaurant for breakfast . It was good, not great. Prices are very reasonable.
The cook wears gloves during food prep which is a plus. The waitress was nice , but didn’t check on us throughout our meal. The sausage gravy and biscuits were very salty and the biscuits fell apart when eating . My fiancé standard egg/ ham /toast / hash browns was good ( but not crisp) I watched his eggs sit in the counter awhile before the hash browns were finished being cooked.
No pictures , just average presentation.

It's OK. I do not recommend the biscuits and gravy. Some strange flavors in the gravey. Hashbrowns over cooked. Staff is friendly enough. Has old time diner feel which is cool. Few seating options. One table, 6 booths, bar seats.

This was my first time here and I’m glad we stopped for breakfast! The cook has a good sense of humor, the waitress was very friendly and the food was good. The price was very reasonable and the portions were large. All of their toast is texas style (thick). They also sell lunch items so I may come for lunch next time. I recommend if your ever in portage to make this a stop!
