We drove to this location last night and arrived at 9 50 pm... and it was closed up. Lights off, no staff anywhere, and the parking lot was empty.
I ve tried to find posted hours and everything i see says it closes at 10 30 pm but thats simply not true.
Sadly we came in from green bay wi to try portillos for the very first time. And this doesnt leave a very good first impression at all.

We have been to enough Portillo’s feel like there is an expected standard. This is our second time at this one. The food was good. The wait was a bit much. We were there at 2 in the afternoon and watched as a staff answered their cell phone, another got themselves a drink and enjoyed it, and a few were horsing around. I can understand if there was no one there. There were at least 6 of us (groups and individuals) waiting for our orders. Disappointed, likely won’t return to this location on our way through town.

Don’t order cheese sauce with your order to go. Every time I order cheese sauce with my fries they never give it to me. When you order on the app. They tape your bag closed so it’s hard to look in there to make sure everything is in there. That cheese sauce is almost 2.00 extra and this has happened to me 4 other times.

Update for Sept 2025: still 15 minutes later than stated for pickup. 7/7 times and none are on time.

The later evening service is always sub-par. Not rude, but you would think with 10 employees (I was bored from the wait - yes I counted) and a dude standing in the lobby that I might at a bare minimum be acknowledged with any sort of verbal interaction. Day staff seem fine. There's an online disclaimer stating that food could take additional time (15 minutes? Don't recall.), which I do appreciate before I had over to pick up the food. My wife and I were using meal codes per the last time we ordered. To elaborate, our previous experience was so bad they gave us free food to come back. This time around I stood in the lobby, unacknowledged, about 28 minutes after the latest possible advertised food pickup time. The food is always fine, but it's never "on time." When I did get my food, it was because another patron stood at the counter and waved someone down on his behalf and I piggybacked service. You will get faster service anywhere. You'll get better service when the sun is still up, but at night you might want to look elsewhere. I could have ordered at a different restaurant and had my food brought out to me more quickly if I had done so dining in. These are my thoughts roughly three weeks after the fact and after four visits.

The hiring manager is very rude and inconsiderate. I came for an interview on Friday and waited over 2 hours, just to not get interviewed, and I was told to come back on Monday. So I came back on Monday, spent money THAT I DID NOT HAVE, on an uber to get here, just for him to completely brush me off and say “sorry not today” im busy. He even has the cashiers trained to say that he is busy when i asked for a manager. It’s not okay to waste peoples time like that. And for that sir, you will ALWAYS stay over worked, because this is how you treat potential employees. No wonder you are running around the restaurant like a chicken with your head cut off. I have a great resume, I am decent looking, & ready to work, and I would have been a great asset to the company. But everything happens for a reason, he probably would have been a horrible boss anyways…

Oh and fyi the fries here are overly salty. The staff is decent and friendly…

This place is awesome. It's very retro inside and there's plenty of room to sit. When we got our food, a sandwich was missing. When I confronted the kitchen, they were very friendly about it and gave me my sandwich that they had forgotten to put in our bag. The manager was sitting a couple seats down from us and asked us how our food was and if the staff accommodated us. Overall this place is one-of-a-kind and we will absolutely be coming back!

I went to Portillos to meet some family there and I did not order anything to eat. I was in Madison visiting and had never been to Portillos before. It was a big place and the food looked good but as the others ate it looked pretty basic as they ate hot dogs, fries, chicken tenders and drinks. It looked good but I had already eaten earlier but the food looked good. The atmosphere there was good and bright and open.

Recently, I went inside of Portillo’s for the first time and omg?? I never knew it was so cute and retro, I regret not going in sooner! I was offered the opportunity to try out their new lemon cake flavor and the cake shake and it was AMAZING. If you like lemon, you’ll LOVE that flavor. I am impressed that they make the cake in house because a lot of places don’t do that anymore! You also cannot go wrong with their burgers and Italian beef. 10/10!!!

Ordered at the automatic screen by the checkout...notified worker at counter of a change that was also input into the touchscreen ordering system. Requested changes were not made. Went up and asked for it (au jus for beef sandwich);received cups of cheese instead. Hot dog was pretty ok ..except ordered cheese in it and literally a slice of American cheese....cold and not melted was just thrown on top at last moment it seemed....it was 9pm and they close at 10:30 and they were already mopping the dining room and seemed to be closing the kitchen in back so that made it uncomfortable like we were not wanted and getting stared down to leave as fast as possible. The hot dog was pretty good otherwise similar to Chicago famous dogs. The beef sandwich would have been good had it been prepared as requested .....the croissant sandwich new item...was NOT GOOd...looked NOTHING LIKE the picture on touchscreen menu ..it was literally a croissant just cut not even toasted or warmed up with some beef thrown on it. Nothing else that we thought was supposed to have on it .... So I think during the day with some better workers that weren't in a rush to just leave would have made the food and experience better ...it is such a uncomfortable negative experience to go to a restaurant a little later than the typical 7/8 pm rush bc the workers always seem to rush you ..I worked in service for 15 years ...if you don't want to work late....then don't put people that will willingly work late on the schedule. Sometimes I would make more in tips that last hour before closing then I did all night because I wasn't just cleaning and doing closing duties I was giving my customers the service they deserved just like everyone else that came in earlier that night ...doesn't matter if they came in 10 minutes till closing you close at a specific time not 5/10minutes before or after that time ..so give the customers that come in late the same respect as every other customer.

Looking for classic American fare? Portillo's didn't disappoint. The burger was made to order correctly. Cooked well. Tasted fresh. The fries were just crispy enough with balanced salt. They had a busser making sure the place was in order who was respectful and attentive. It's a large place with the classic diner feel and the overhead music completes it. I rated 4 stars because it's everything I would hope to expect for an American fast food place of this caliber for $14. No WIFI however. The only other disappointment was seeing artificial ingredients in the chocolate cake (red 40, etc.). How artificial colors are still finding their way in so much food in a country with an obesity epidemic that has expressed an interest in healthier more natural food is beyond me but that is for another forum. A level up from McDonald's and comparable to Culvers.

Today, on my way to Minnesota, I stopped at the Tesla Supercharger and, luckily, there was a Portillo's right in front. I was helped by the manager Francisco and Ms. Whitney—both were very kind. Everything was great, and the service was excellent. The only suggestion I could make is to improve the cleanliness of the employees' uniforms. I also noticed that most of them use their phones and go back to their tasks without washing their hands. But overall, it’s a 5-star service.

I like the kiosk concept for ordering but they need to be worked on. They will not allow you to enter your rewards number, which is your phone number, and add a coupon to an order. Once you enter your phone number it will not even offer you the option to add a coupon. Just need some work.

Food... I loved the fries, good taste. Loved the cheese sauce.
The burger... Sooo much grease... I've never seen a burger's grease run like a faucet before, & I'm not even exaggerating. The bun was saturated on the bottom as well. I still tried it... It had a good flavor but so much grease that it couldn't be finished.

My friend had the hot dog, looked very pretty. She said it was so soft. Not sometime she could reheat later. Onion rings were great.

My husband had a roast beef, said if you do to get the veggies on it. No flavoring on the meat. But the cheese sauce helped. But again it was greasy.

Service was very nice. Took a couple minutes to figure out where to order. But the girl at register was very kind & did a great job. Once ordered you go find a seat and wait to be called... Worked well enough.

Place looks nice, but most of the tables were dirty unfortunately. Some dried ketchup on a couple of them.

Rest rooms were good.

I might go again someday to try the shakes. Unusual shakes that looked amazing, definitely would get the fries again. Not sure I'd order the burgers without a poncho- not kidding. Actually don't think I'd order it again, I couldn't eat most of it with the grease running down my hands and arms, it was difficult to even try.
