A classic steakhouse with amazing meat selections, wet aged and dry aged steaks.
We sat outside on the patio area with a view of the capital building while we dined.
Susie was a super sweet waitress who made our anniversary special.
They have an extensive wine list and cocktail menu. Very posh. Very loud inside. Bathrooms are ok. No parking close by unless you are lucky enough to find street parking.

Growing up without a mom and a very tough father, I was raised to stay poised and stern. Coming into my adult life, there were only two instances I can remember shedding tears. Once was when I saw my wife walk down the isle towards me at our wedding, and the other was when I tried the dry aged porterhouse at Rare Steakhouse. Truly a meal fit for Eru Illuvitar himself. Should I live a life of grace and love, I know that beyond St. Peter's gate there is an order of Beef Tartare waiting for me such as I was blessed with this evening. 12/10 there is none better.

Don't waste your money on the Wagyu Rideye. Totally not worth it. My husband's dry aged steak was more tender and marbled than my Waygu steak. It was not worth the price. I asked the waitress twice if she was sure it was wagyu. She assured me it was, but it was tough, and had little marbling. No buttery flavor at all. I specifically chose Rare for my birthday because I wanted a wagyu steak. Spent $500 on dinner for 2, and had a steak no better than I could make at home on the grill. HUGE disappointment!

This was EXCEPTIONAL! I went with a group from work as a celebration and this did not disappoint. The service was excellent and quick. The food was…words fail. We ordered a variety of starters: ahi tuna, crab cakes, and beef tartare. All delicious. The ahi tuna was my favorite. I ordered the ribcap with cognac cream sauce for my main and it was melt in my mouth delicious. We ordered a variety of sides to share: Brussels sprouts, green beans, whipped potatoes, carrots, hashbrowns, and the lobster mac & cheese. I practically rolled out of there, but it was so satisfying. The wine was great as well!

I never write Google reviews, but I had such a great experience here to celebrate my engagement that I feel like it would be wrong not to leave one. It was the perfect romantic atmosphere to celebrate one of the best days of our lives. Our server was polite and conversational while also giving us the privacy to enjoy our celebration together, and even went out of his way to have the kitchen bring us free glasses of prosecco and a crab cake on the house when we told him we were celebrating our engagement (both of which were delicious). We ordered the filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked rare, and the scallops and gnocchi, which were likewise perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. We will definitely stop by again the next time we are in town!

I'm leaving a review covering ten years of dining at Rare. My husband and I are retired professionals (airline captain and air traffic controller, not "white trash", per some other review.) Rare has excellent everything: food, drinks, atmosphere, impeccably-dressed and friendly staff, white linen tablecloths (a rarity nowadays), clean restrooms, and a lot of class! There is a wide variety of great food on the menus, both dining room and bar, and all are cooked and seasoned perfectly. Drinks are not watered down. It's hard to find a better restaurant (I think some people write outlandish, negative reviews, angling for a freebie... one can see right through that.) Rare Steakhouse Madison is great! (And, full disclosure: I despise crying babies and unruly toddlers in a fine-dining restaurant. That, however, is NOT the fault of any restaurant. It is the responsibility of the selfish parents, who should think of others before dragging their kids to a classy restaurant.)

Okay real talk this place is terrible actually it's worse than terrible. We showed up and the ambiance of screaming children and table clothes that resemble a bedsheet you buy at dollar general don't reflect the prices you're about to pay. It's like if you grew up in a small town and the kid who wore button ups with a flame pattern opened a restaurant. The room temperature is way too high and the bathrooms are straight up diabolical, the fact that the staff wear full suits... I can only imagine how close they are to the cusp of heat exhaustion. Seriously do better, it doesn't matter how much white trash leaves good reviews this place has it's truly a step above burger king.

Always a treat to return to Rare! Decided to treat the kid & his girlfriend for his birthday.

The surrounding are best described as “early Scorsese” or dark lighting with burgundy leather banquet seating. Cool vibes. Waitstaff, mostly college age, all in formal attire. Classy. Y’know?

Greeted warmly & professionally by our server, Ashton, who informed us about the foie gras special & took our drink orders. My shaken Hendricks martini with a twist was delivered shortly thereafter & scratched the itch!

Ashton then took our order of sweet chili shrimp with lime, the foie gras special with roasted apple, Caesar salad, bone in ribeye, New York strip, brussel sprouts and creamed spinach.

The ribeye was cooked perfectly & tender. The NY strip was medium (mid rare was the target temp) and was swiftly refired and served. Shockingly fast too! Delicious. The sides were excellent as well.

Somehow he had room for dessert. He ordered the bananas foster (made table side & always a fun show) & the espresso creme brûlée. Ashton kindly served a super smooth chocolate mouse cake square with graham crust topped with whipped cream and a candle. Nice.

Just a lovely night all around. If you’re craving steak & professional service in an old school setting…I suggest a reservation at Rare!

My Fiancé and I dined here for our 4th Anniversary on January 21st. Beautiful restaurant with a romantic vibe. Despite being placed next to a table with 5 screaming drunk women, we enjoyed ourselves. My fiance had the Lobster Bisque, which was fabulous. Very rich and creamy. Great flavor. The French onion soup was also good. I just wish they would cook the steaks better. I ordered the Filet Mignon, cooked medium. I wish I had mentioned something to the server. The outside of it was so charred and tough. It was charred to the point that the crust would splinter apart, kind of like pulling beef jerky apart. Had such a strong burnt taste to it. Extremely chewy. I didn't send it back, as I did not want to interrupt mine and my fiancé's dinner.
We would like to come back someday, hopefully with a better experience.

Very dark restaurant. Waiter had to talk super loud to us because the restaurant was so loud. Had reservations and had to wait a long time for the food. First time to the restaurant and for the prices they charged, I'm not sure I would go back. I've never understood how good restaurants can manage to get everything wrong sometimes, but worse yet, our own poor experience was on New Year's Eve. The food was uninspiring; the pan-seared halibut, at forty two bucks, was not just a tiny portion, but also dry, chewy, amd served at room temperature. The ahi tuna poke starter earned good reviews, but the three crab cakes we ordered were all dry as well. The "Japanese style cheesecake" described as fluffy and delicious by our server was more reminiscent of a stale piece of pound cake and tasted like what I'd imagine a kitchen sponge would. The biggest issue was the service, which can best be described as a series of omissions. I had to ask twice for water refills, and at some point got up and went to the kitchen to get a missing knife I'd asked for and never received. Staff kept removing unused silverware with every course for reasons that baffled us all, but not replacing them when the next course arrived. We had to panhandle for missing items three times. Soups arrived without a spoon, salads without a fork, and so on, over and over again. A sparkling water came without the lemon requested and was never refilled. I even got handed a dessert menu that was empty inside (just the leather case with no contents at all). We were trying to enjoy our experience but constantly had to manage the hapless staff, in the glaring absence of any manager whose job it might have been to do just that. Since there were six of us, an $83 tip was added to our check. That is not a bad idea for large parties, but when the service is bad it rewards indifference, and a customer's only way to express his disappointment is a review. For over 500 bucks total, we didn't just expect better; we deserved better. I would have gladly given Rare $83 if they'd only told me to find a restaurant with better service when I made my reservation in the first place. That way, we would've both received a valuable tip.

Christmas Eve reservation for 4 (mom, dad, son, daughter). Let me start by saying that the food is fantastic. We had the Bone Marrow and Oysters Rockefeller appetizers, Japanese A5 Wagyu entrees, Filet and Lobster tail, great bottle of wine. The food is top notch. But it took us 2.5 hours to finish our meal. There was a period when they cleared the appetizers and salads and our table sat empty with no activity for 45 minutes (no exaggeration). That is unacceptable. The table next to us (party of 5 who sat down at the same time) finished an hour before we did. A party of 12 who sat down 30 minutes after we did finished 30 minutes before we did. Again, we weren't in any hurry. But this was brutal meal pacing - someone screwed up. After asking about it a few times, we were told "we're terribly sorry, and the GM is going to come stop by the table." When our food finally arrived, the GM walked over. His verbatim words were "Sorry for the delay, just wanted to check if the first few bites tasted okay." We said the food was great. And he walked away. A completely useless visit with zero gesture of true remorse. Quite a shame to spend $950 on dinner for 4 (which I'm normally happy to do) and to walk away disappointed, tired and wishing we had a redo. We've been to Rare before. Again, the food is terrific. But this was a bad experience that really sucked the air out of the festive nature of a holiday meal. What a shame and I'm sorry to say it will make me think twice before trusting them with an important meal the next time.

Was in town from Chicago for work and our company treated us to Thanksgiving dinner here. Have never been to Madison before, so was excited to see what the city had to offer. Lovely place; elevated with a casual, non-pretentious edge. Food was good for a limited menu. Genevieve was our server and was an absolute gem. I work in the service industry and was really impressed by not only her enthusiasm and charisma, but also her knowledge of everything on the holiday menu and wine/spirits list. Great ability to upsell. I could tell she made our group feel very welcomed and comfortable, despite working on a holiday. I rarely write reviews, but wanted to give her a nod for her excellent service as this is rare to find in our field. I hope the managers/owners find this comment and make an effort to take care of her as she would fit in very well at any Michelin accredited restaurant here in Chicago.

We went to Rare steakhouse to celebrate our 10 year anniversary and it was absolutely spectacular! Genevieve was our waitress for the evening and she was phenomenal - everything from entree recommendations to pairings, to scheduling enough time in between courses to engaging in conversation - she was by far one of the best waitresses we have ever had at any establishment and we would highly recommend that you request her upon selecting Rare for your next dining experience! The food was outstanding - the oysters on the half shell, the lobster bisque, the wet-aged filet, the accompaniments and the desserts were excellent. Great place! They were so crazy busy and it was so loud I couldn’t hear the folks at my table, but even though they were busy, the wait for food and drinks was not horrible. The server we had was new, but she did great! The guy who delivers your drinks was very polite and professional (and a super sharp dresser). The Sommelier was just as accommodating and polite. But...this is some of the worst steak I've had. It was burnt crispy on the outside. Could barely taste my steak with that type of overwhelming burnt flavor. Lobster was terrible too.

The food was great, we went on Valentine’s Day. We had made a reservation but it wasn’t too busy. They had some free bread as an appetizer. For certain orders they created an entertaining spectacle for all of the diners. It was a bit expensive but worth going to for a special event.

I have been to Rare many times now to dine in and every aspect of the experience is always exceptional. I am sure that providing service of this caliber is even more challenging on Valentine's Day, but Genevieve and Owen delivered without fail. They were both beyond kind and accommodating. The superlative service coupled with the excellent food provided by the chefs certainly made it a night to remember for all of the right reasons. Thank you so much for everything. Went there last night for a New Year's Eve dinner. Extremely disappointed. At this price point you would expect a lot better. $435 for two people, only one alcoholic drink.
Bread came out. Had a hard top layer, like it had been microwave. Baked potato and mushrooms were cold. Crab legs were small with cold melted butter. Steak was tough with a lot of silver skin. No salt in the salt shaker. And I'll waiter had absolutely no personality whatsoever. Didn't smile once.
Definitely think you can get a better steak at Outback or a chain restaurant without paying these high prices

Service has slow and staffing levels were inadequate. Server ignored us and was cold and distant when he was around. I had to keep asking random people for drink service. Food was served cold and had to send back. Server barely acknowledged the problem. It was disappointing as it was a birthday celebration. Not a great experience. The steak, however, was delicious.

Great food and great service. Went there for the first time with colleagues while traveling for work. I preferred scallops while some of my other coworkers had the filet. The reason I give this place a 3-star is the food is great. Not perfect the service is great, not perfect and the price is outrageous I can go to Tornado Room, Delaney's, Outos almost any other steakhouse in the whole city and it will be half the price. The food was good not 150$ per person good. Be ready to pay a month's wages for a single meal with our dessert.

산책을 하다가 외식이 하고 싶어 하나쯤은 영업하는 곳이 있겠지 하고 무조건 다운타운 캐피탈 쪽으로 향했다. 길을 걷다가 아내가 발견해서 들어가 보게 되었다. 원래는 예약을 해야하는 것 같았으나 친절하신 남자 매니저분 덕분에 우리는 운좋게 들어갔다. 마침 땡쓰기빙데이라고 스페셜 코스만을 진행하고 있었다. 가성비가 좋았다. 에피타이저는 단호박 스프와 샐러드가 있었는데 각자 하나씩 골랐다. 둘다 아주 맛있었다. 스프 안의 상큼한 라즈베리가 미묘하게 잘 어우러졌다. 메인메뉴도 두가지 선택지가 있었는데 나는 스테이크 아내는 터키를 시켰다. 둘다 만족스러웠다. 스테이크는 굽기 정도와 간이 딱 좋고 부드러워 아내가 좋아했다. 터키는 그레이비 소스가 묻어 나왔는데 그레이비 소스를 좋아하는 아내는 따로도 소스가 담아져 나왔으면 좋겠다고 했다. 둘다 sides가 아주 푸짐했다. 버섯, 감자, 호박, 콘, 스터핑, 고구마 등등 그냥 다 맛있었다. 디저트는 카스테라같은 펌킨 치즈케이크가 나왔다.
식사를 마치고 나니 땡쓰기빙데이를 아주 잘 보낸 기분이 들었다.

Gave Rare a second Chance and chose it as our last hurrah before our daughter is born. Waiter was very professional and all courses arrived in a timely manner. However, my main dish (scallops) were fowl. I ended up spitting it out because I immediately tasted ammonia, something you shouldn’t experience at a higher end restaurant. I returned my meal and declined when asked if I’d like something else. We were very disappointed and will not be returning.

While it is on the higher end as far as price ranges go, we felt it was well worth it. Everything we had was very well prepared and delicious. We plan on regularly returning when we want to treat ourselves.

Edit: Dropping our review by 2 stars. We've returned twice since our initial review and both times were treated poorly by the hosts. We tried contacting the restaurant by email, but have not received a response. Probably won't be going back just to avoid being either flat out ignored or being talked down to by the hosts.

Food is always decent but the bar service was absolutely terrible on our last trip. The bartenders make no eye contact with anyone throughout service to see if you need anything and pay no attention to your drink levels or do any sort of bussing. We had to say “excuse me” and get their attention each time to order food, get a drink refill or even get silverware. Until we specifically flagged them down, our drinks would sit empty and no dishes would be cleared (as evidenced by photos).I should also mention that we were there right after 4 and it was not busy. There were 12 guests at the bar and the restaurant had very few tables so the service was truly neglectful, not due to being busy with other bar patrons or making server drinks.

Was there for a large group event. Started with the lobster bisque which was awesome. Nice chunks of lobster and not overwhelmingly creamy. I went with the New York Strip which was cooked to my liking with a nice marbling. The sides were also good with extremely buttery mashed potatoes and nice green beans. The only disappointing dish was the blood orange sorbet which was the most exciting offering. Was a bit too icy and did not capture the flavor of blood orange at all. More like Orange creamsicle. =/
