I took my wife here for her birthday last week and we very impressed! I chose to book a place we’ve never been and this one got pretty good reviews so I was excited to surprise her! Inside is very intimate and sophisticated and I assume since we went on a Tuesday night, it was not crowded nor was there any noise. We were greeted by Marilyn, who was super sweet and gave us all sorts of compliments (thank you). Our server, Raj, was very knowledgeable and took good care of us. My wife got the pistachio crusted sea bass and I got the filet, both were excellent. AND I can’t forget to mention the warm sourdough bread that came out before the meal. Oh, and the table across from us ordered bananas foster, we got to watch that being prepared. Thanks again for a great experience!

We very much appreciated the thoughtfulness in creating the dishes! Chef Darlene out did herself and even visited our table to wish us a happy anniversary!
Our server, Madison, represented the restaurant well describing each and every entrée and making thoughtful suggestions.
The tomahawk steak was done perfectly and the sides complemented it well.
The cream cheese cake was not overly sweet enhancing how tasty the fresh fruit compost was.
In a day that service typically is lacking, Rare outdid themselves!
Definitely coming back!

This is HANDS DOWN the best steak in mke. Idc what anyone says about carnivore or Moe’s or Mason Street, Rare is king. They have one of the best dry aged ribeyes I’ve ever had, lobster bisque is LOADED with fresh lobster, cocktails are amazing, and bar manager Nia is top notch! I can not recommend this place enough if you’re looking for a classic steak house like you can only find in Manhattan, right here in Milwaukee.

The menu was full of delicious options that weren't your run of the mill steakhouse choices. The Bone marrow was fantastic The 22oz wagyu was perfect, and the table side prepared banana fosters was excellent. The staff is full of knowledgeable folks who gave great advice on which wines, meal specials and desserts to choose. The wait staff wasn't dry and business only, they brought smiles and witty banter to the table, and really lightened up the mood.

I went there for my fiance's 40th birthday a couple of weeks ago. We had a group of 10 people. There are good things about this restaurant: The restaurant itself has great atmosphere, and the food is fine. Not mind-blowing but not awful. But the bad about this restaurant is so awful that I have to warn you about it: When our food came out, they delivered the wrong steak to the wrong person. That person tried it and was eating it and it wasn't until steaks had all been delivered that they realized they delivered it incorrectly. Since we were spending $150+/person (our bill was $1500), I expected them to take the steak and get a new one and then re-deliver it to the correct person. Instead, they took the steak that he had partially already eaten and handed it to the correct person! Disgusting, and frankly an embarrassing decision for the establishment, the servers, and the owners that this is how their staff is trained to handle this situation. The fact that their servers were willing to deliver half-eaten food to one of their customers makes me shudder at what happens in the kitchen.

Was a little bit pricey for what you got, but it was still pretty good, I can't really complain that much because, it was pretty good food, but for $350 bill?? For two people? That just seems a little bit obscene. Regardless, it was a pretty good time I actually enjoyed myself quite a bit!

Unfortunately for us, Rare was a total miss. I’ve been there before so this could have been an off night but the main meal, our Tomahawk Steak, was so under cooked, it was still purple. Seeing as we paid $145, we did ask it be cooked longer. After we got it back, it was still rare. We asked for it to be Medium Rare. I understand it’s a larger cut of meat but when you go to a steakhouse that prides itself in the quality/cook of the meat, we did expect it to be cooked properly. The taste was terrible too. Not sure if recooking it changed the taste but it was inedible. Overall just an unacceptable experience. No one asked how it could be made better. We were kind of ignored after we asked for it to be cooked longer. Yes we were given a complementary cake slice by the server who twice said the steak was not cooked properly.
Photo is from after it was refired.

Rare in Milwaukee is a must-visit for steak lovers. The warm atmosphere, attentive staff (Brooke), and extensive menu make it an unforgettable experience. My ribeye was cooked to perfection, seasoned impeccably, and mouthwateringly tender. The sides, including truffle mac and cheese and roasted Brussels sprouts, were exceptional.
If you're in Milwaukee, don't miss out on this exceptional steakhouse - I can't wait to return

Lunch like a boss at Rare Steakhouse 🥩✨ Their Executive Three-Course Lunch is a game changer—luxury, flavor, and impeccable service all wrapped into one!
Here’s what we feasted on:
🍞 Freshly baked popovers — warm, airy perfection
🦞 Rich and velvety lobster bisque
🥗 Classic Caesar salad with the perfect anchovy kick
🥩 Juicy steak with crispy, golden frites
🍋 Refreshing lemon sorbet to finish
Chef John Levine is making magic happen in his new kitchen, and it was a pleasure seeing him in action, alongside Chef Todd Leech.
The space? Think masculine elegance—big leather booths, rich wood tones, and a wine selection that will impress 🍷
Perfect for power lunches, date nights, or when you just want to treat yourself. Rare, indeed.

We had been looking for the perfect opportunity to try this restaurant for years. When we planned to attend a show downtown, we decided it was finally time. We made a reservation and were promptly seated upon arrival. Our reservation was a bit early to accommodate the timing of the show, but it worked out perfectly.
Although the restaurant is relatively new, it exudes the timeless charm of a classic steakhouse, complete with elegant dining booths and low lighting that creates a cozy and sophisticated atmosphere.
The menu is well-curated--not overwhelmingly extensive but offering a variety of options. While we didn't receive a separate wine or cocktail menu, there were several appealing choices integrated into the main menu. Given the impressive wine cellar visible near our table, we assume a dedicated wine list might typically be available. For those not in the mood for steak, there's a decent selection of alternative entrees, though we opted for the steakhouse staples.
We began our meal with soup--lobster bisque for me and French onion soup for my husband--both of which were excellent. For our main course, we chose steaks accompanied by sautéed mushrooms and truffle butter. Before our meal arrived, we were served warm, flaky popovers with maple butter, which were absolutely delicious. The lobster bisque was rich and flavorful, and the steaks were perfectly cooked and juicy. Every bite was a delight.
The staff was attentive and thoughtful, ensuring we stayed on schedule for our show without feeling rushed. Though we briefly considered dessert, we decided against it since we didn't think we'd be able to finish. Still, the options sounded tempting. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience--the ambiance, service, and food exceeded our expectations. We'll definitely return!

Food was excellent but for that price point, the staff needs some serious training fast. First, greet people with a “hello and welcome” and with a beaming smile. Then, kindly offer to take peoples’ coats. No one should be walking to their table with their winter coats and then hang them on the back of their chairs. I saw people sitting at their tables with coats on chairs. This immediately felt like I was in a restaurant that wanted to feel premium but was little more than an expensive mass steakhouse. I asked to have our coats taken away.
Silverware should be refreshed after every dish. Never encourage someone to keep a fork, knife, or spoon. Assume the guest wants a new one for their new dish. Clean table with table crumber between dishes. No guests should feel like they’re sitting at a dirty table piled with crumbs.
I honestly thought the servers were kind but have not been trained properly. The service didn’t feel better than if I had went to a mass steakhouse chain.
Last, the entire restaurant needs to look very tidy. I don’t like being able to see the servers section beside the bar. That destroys the illusion.
Please keep in mind I spent well over $600 on a meal. The service and ambiance should be exceptional. This is a big miss and I would encourage people to go elsewhere.
I would not recommend to others.

Steaks and lobster tail were very good. Service was TERRIBLE we each got a bad raw oyster in our appetizers. Our sides came well after our entrees. (Took home) Had to request the popovers. Watery coffee after dinner. Watery espresso martini. Didn't drink either (should have asked for refund). Waited a long time between courses. I was incredulous. UNREAL at these prices. Beautiful interior though. Bad experience.

I went to Rarer Steakhouse with a friend to dinner superb. I had French Onion Soup, Bottleneck Steak and Hash Browns. The popovers are to die for!!! The portion size was smaller than Capital Grill. The service was impeccable.
Not a deal breaker but of note, the booths are oddly configured - the table is not a half moon but has corners and it looks directly across to a table and a booth across the room. The booth is not private.
Would I return again - ABSOLUTELY!!

High class (but pricey) steakhouse experience in downtown Milwaukee.
The popovers are to die for!
The steak was good, but I wish it was a little closer to medium rare…that is the issue when you order a tomahawk I guess. Bone-in steaks are tough to cook properly…but it was still tasty!
The sides were delicious. I left about as full as I’ve ever been.

Visiting from Chicago, and we ran into this beautiful and sexy steakhouse. The young lady at the door greeted us so kindly, and all the servers were super sweet. We loved everything we ordered. Steak, bone marrow, oysters, fries, salads, drinks on point, and the bread was the BEST I've ever had. Food was cooked to perfection, and tasted amazing. For dessert we had the Banana Foster, and OMG was in insanely good.

I came here on 7/17 for my boyfriend’s birthday. The restaurant was dead and to say our service was subpar, would be an understatement. The server was new, it was obvious. He spilled an entire drink platter on and got beverages all over the table and my boyfriend. The restaurant did nothing to accommodate this large mistake. I will not be dining here again.

Terrible service, severely overpriced, unbelievably pretentious for what it is. My partner and I came with a 6:30pm dinner reservation that I had booked two months in advance. We were greeted at the door and taken to a table. For the next 45 minutes, we watched three parties enter without reservations, sit, have their orders taken, and receive their appetizers. One party got their entrees. We weren't even talked to the entire time. Waitstaff was wearing mismatched outfits, wrinkled tablecloths, buttons missing and stains present on upholstery, this restaurant appeared to inflate itself far beyond what it can handle while boasting about the quality of their food and the fact that wagyu was on the menu.

An amazing experience from beginning to end. We went here for my birthday, so we indulged a bit, and it was one of the best meals we've had in years. Everything started off well with Brooke's attentive service, a glass of Prosecco, and some freshly made popovers with strawberry butter. And things kept going well as we received our cocktails (Boulevardier and Sazerac) and our appetizers: a mix of fresh, plump oysters on the half shell, and an amazing pork belly dish with a cherry-chipotle cream and wilted chard.
The next round was the heart of the meal: a perfectly cooked and notably flavorful NY Strip steak, perfectly seared scallops with cauliflower-potato puree and fennel, a bunch of sides, and an additional, indulgent treat: luscious Japanese Wagyu beef. We had never had Wagyu before, and now we're true believers. A tasty glass of Malbec made its way to the table, and at the end--it was my birthday--a complimentary piece of the most luscious chocolate cake that I've had.
The main dining room, where we ate, is a beautiful and comfortable space, but we also got a few glimpses of the bar in back, and it is also inviting. Though we don't often splurge like this, we can see ourselves coming back soon for a less Gargantuan meal--in the dining room or at the bar--and enjoying a cocktail, that pork dish, and either the NY Strip or Wagyu again.
There is some street parking available, if you're lucky to get it. But there's a parking garage adjacent (east) to the restaurant, and Rare will issue some kind of voucher to exempt or reduce the fee. We were unaware of that, so parked across the street. No big deal, though. This meal was exceptional, marvelous, and memorable.

Very very average. Unfortunately, Rare was not up to my expectations for a steakhouse at this price point. I really hope this was just an off night, but I probably won’t be back to find out.
We ordered: Maryland style crab cake, scallops, and the KC strip. We have the mushrooms and the beef fat fries as sides.
The highlight of the meal was the free popovers with strawberry butter. The crab cakes and the KC strip were just not very flavorful. The scallops had a fishy odor so my husband decided not to finish his dish just in case.
Mostly a big disappointment. For the money, you’re much better off at Carnevor.

When we first walked in, the man and woman at the desk were very welcoming! Thought about ordering the tomahawk, but they were out, so ended up ordering the bottleneck and it was really chewy, very hard to cut through and did not have much flavor. The loaded hash browns.. were a ok and looked good, but for the price and place, we expected much more. Same for the Brussels sprouts. The food took a while, had to ask twice for a water refill, sat around before having to ask for the check at the end and still waited a while to get it, then to pay. I was disappointed to spend over $250 for mediocre experience.

On my 2024 Tour of Steakhouses, this was at the top of the list. Where do I even begin? First I have to say we were well taken care of by the General Manager Devante and our server Alex. Both individuals made the experience a 10/10.
The location is easy to find right off of Michigan, near the lake. There is a garage across the street with affordable parking by the hour but Ubering is a safer bet because the cocktail menu is amazing.
We sat in one of their gorgeous booths in the back by their library. Although their dining room isn't enormous, there are plenty of seats and two private rooms. I think they utilize them as general seating when they aren't booked for parties, but again, plenty of room in the dining area. The bar was also large with a decent amount of seating.
We started with martinis and calamari. The calamari comes with a spicy and a sweet dipping sauce. Per Alex's recommendation, we split the chopped salad. It's full of vegetables that compliment each other perfectly. They also bring enormous flaky popovers with a honey butter. You'll start with half because they're so big, but you'll finish the whole thing because addicting. For dinner I had the NY Strip and my friend had the Bottleneck. Both were cooked perfectly. We went with creamed corn (very strong smoky flavor), broccolini, and lobster mac. The lobster mac had a generous amount of lobster so I was very happy. For dinner we split their crème brûlée special, which was s'more flavored. Yum! We each also got some espresso because all of that eating had us exhausted.
Alex and Devante stopped by the table periodically to chat. We had such a great time making small talk and learning about the establishment. After dinner we explore their library which is full of vintage books. It's hard to choose a highlight to our trip because everything was perfection. We haven't stopped talking about our visit and are recommending everyone try out this top tier steakhouse!!

The restaurant is lovely and exquisite. The decor and ambiance is luxurious. The service we received from Raj was fine but the food was underwhelming. The lobster in my bisque was cold. My NY Strip steak was cooked properly but it was tough. My guest ordered 4 oz of Japanese Wagu Beef. It was cooked perfectly but way over-seasoned. My guest commented to the server how salty it was but no offer to replace it was made. Any good chef knows that Wagu Beef barely needs any seasoning. For this restaurant, I would recommend the more expensive cuts of meat and avoid the less expensive steaks as we were disappointed. For what we spent, we expected better and they wasn’t busy.

Great food! Steaks cooked to liking, sauces are a great pairing. Fries were great, sauce amazing. Bone marrow to die for. Lobster amazing.
We accidentally broke a champagne glass, but server never offered to bring anything to wipe off table or assist with clearing the small tiny pieces but she helped another table by clearing their crumbs with this special tool she had?
We ordered Cesar salad, never got it. And I know it was heard because she asked did we want shrimp or anchovies on it.
Rositto good, had a lot of vegetables. I did find a two pieces of hard/uncooked rice at that point I stopped eating it.
We did get a complimentary cake it's great. We took to go and was nice to have after digesting a little :)
The server was attentive to table next to us of 5. We waited over 15 min for check after packing our leftovers for us. For a almost 400$ meal for two and a 70$ tip, I wouldnt return not worth the money.

Came with a friend for dinner before a concert. I'm a very picky steak eater. Have paid $$$$ for steaks with no flavor. Ordered the Ribeye cut (limited), and it was melt in your mouth delicious. Not only tender, but packed with flavor. I didn't get any of the additional sauces as it was perfect by itself. Also had the Gem Wedge which was amazing. The Pretzel Popovers were so unique and wonderful to eat. They melted in your mouth as well! Service was awesome, we felt very much attended to. Would highly recommend and would come back on another visit to the area.

Went for my birthday dinner.
Service: A+, our server was WONDERFUL
Drink: took 20 minutes, 1 drink was pretty good & boozy, 1 was underwhelming
Food: pork belly app was delicious, oysters Rockefeller were rotten & tasted like a horse barn smells, tomahawk steak was half fat & gristle and was ordered medium but arrived rare, asparagus side was over-salted, mashed potatoes were ok.
Atmosphere: baseball hats, shorts, belly tops and hoodies are apparently acceptable here. I had thought this was an upscale establishment and dressed accordingly, most other patrons did not.

Expected being over priced for a steakhouse located downtown… but not worth it; not all food was to superior level. Steak was overly salted. Lobster Mac was average. The oyster Rockefeller and lobster bisque was great. Enjoyed the ambiance very much. It was awkward to seat us facing directly across from another couple. That seems senseless, considering we were the only two tables in the restaurant. Love the table bread, can’t say I’ll be back again soon to overpay what I can get at another local Milwaukee spot.

We have gone to Rare a few times for special occasion dinners. We bring our children, and Alex, our server, was so kind and attentive to all our needs. He was wonderful. Our youngest even played food critic, and Alex kept it to share with everyone at the restaurant. Thank you so much for everything, and we will be back.

This place is an absolute gem. One of the best steak menus I’ve ever encountered. if you’re looking for an archetypal classic dining experience in Milwaukee this is the place to go. The ambiance is dimly lit, dark wood, and solid. You feel embraced as soon as you walk in from the very well lit and bright corporate lobby that it’s located in. We started with a half dozen oysters split between East and West coasts and they were incredibly fresh. The mignonette sauce was the best I’ve ever had. The lobster bisque was perfect in terms of taste and presentation. They serve fresh and gigantic popovers that made my wife, who has a generational family recipe, jealous. I ordered a bone in American Wagyu just as I ordered with side of delicious lobster mac n cheese. My wife ordered the ginger salmon which was done perfectly to her request. The wine list was extensive. We ordered one of the nicest Malbecs I’ve ever experienced. The whiskey selection was top notch even though it was lacking Weller. The aforementioned popovers are used to make the most incredible bread pudding my wife and I have ever had for desert. The cheesecake was incredible. The service was superb. Friendly, conversational, responsive without seeming overbearing. Our waiter described things in expert detail. The host was quite friendly and was so kind and genuine in hearing we enjoyed our dinner. The cost seemed quite reasonable for the sheer quality and quantity of food and drinks we ordered. We went at the end of January but looking forward to going back in nice weather when we can walk to the nearby lakefront afterwards. I’ve been to Carnevor a couple of times and would suggest Rare over it.

Honestly for $140ish steaks we expected at least some flavor and I am astonished at how lacking they were. Mine even managed to be chewy (cooked medium). The server raved about these -memorized spiel likely- but were steaks I wouldn’t even pay $40 for.

We decided to try Rare tonight based on some of the other reviews. The setting was nice, the steaks were below par, and the service made it even worse. The steaks were not flavorful and quite chewy for prime cut aged ribeyes. We were served without silverware for all three parts (soup, entree, dessert) of our meal. We waited several minutes staring at our food until our server finally came back to ask if we needed anything and had to ask for silverware each time. While we were still eating our dinner we were interrupted with the dessert menu and then rushed to order
Overall, the experience was unpleasant. We will not be recommending Rare. For the same money and 100X better steaks and service go to Carnevor.

It was ok, the waiter was very polite but talked so fast about the many specials I couldn't understand at all, we asked for him to slow down and he did but it was still hard to understand so I just skipped trying Amy specials. The dry aged NY strip steak I ordered was cooked per order medium rare, but very chewy and a bit tendony, not what I would expect for a prime cut that was dry aged. Flavor was decent but not as buttery with the rich hearty flavor that develops with a dry aged steak. Sides were ok, Brussels sprouts were cooked very rapidly and still crunchy at their core. I prefer a little slower roasted and tender. Other sides were fairly similarly prepared very quickly without a marinated slow cooked flavor. For dessert I ordered creme brulee and a port, but they never brought the port. Creme brulee was well done with a very thick layer of caramelized sugar on top with a perfect golden color.
Overall, it's ok, just not my style and for the cost there is much better out there at that level.

Wife and I had a great experience at Rare on our wedding anniversary. Service was excellent, the decor was beautiful and there was a nice ambiance, and our meals were delicious (wife had NY strip and I had salmon since I unfortunately don't eat beef any more). I just kept kicking myself for not getting to Rare sooner (my first time there). We didn't have the opportunity to hang out at the bar for an extra drink but it was a beautiful space, certainly next time. I would absolutely recommend dining at Rare, and we will definitely enjoy future visits there.

Okay, just to be upfront about the limits of this review....myself and a group of women friends went for happy hour only.
I LOVE this place and plan to return for dinner at a later date.
Our bartender/server was off the charts excellent....friendly, helpful, and funny. The drinks were excellent and the bar food deserves stand alone kudos.
The atmosphere is old school dark bar, lots of wood, history and money without feeling intimidating (once you get seated and start interacting with your server, coming in feels a little overwhelming at first).
The outside is crazy to overlook and walk past. It's in that weird part of downtown that feels vaguely deserted and very office vibe. Don't be fooled. Also, it always looks closed because of the lighting. Again, don't be fooled, just pull the door open and walk in for a perfect early evening drink with friends!

Had the opportunity to try Rare for the first time on Sat Jun 11 with another couple. We were surprised at 6:15 PM on a Saturday to find the restaurant nearly empty. While they come across very strict "in writing" about their dress code when making reservations, we were a bit put off by the shorts and non-dressy jeans permitted for the dinner hour. The service was amazing, drinks and bar tender outstanding, wine selection decent and steaks for the table (3 of 4 were phenomenal). Overall very happy with the experience and our waiter. I'd go back!

Food was okay, not impressed for a$250 dinner. No bread basket when others diners had them and it wasn’t on the menu to purchase.
We went out for my birthday dinner, we had 645 pm reservations. We were seated right away but unfortunately in the back library area that was too bright and close to other diners. We got a bottle of wine and the waiter was going over the steaks. My husband and I are steak lovers and excited to try this place. Well our waiter was going over the wet aged steaks and the waiter said “wet aged steaks are similar to your grocery store marinated steaks” umm yeah not words he should use when wanting $50+ for a steak. We asked how long they were wet aged etc he has to ask the chef. He came back with 30 days. We ordered two steaks and three sides. Everything came out within 10 minutes(way too quick), plates not piping hot like you’d expect at a steakhouse. Steak was hot but could be hotter. super strange how quick it came out. I had the filet, ordered medium it was a little over cooked but fine. We didn’t ordered any sauce, because a good steak doesn’t need a sauce, but my plate was swimming in juice, it didn’t effect the flavor it just wasn’t pretty to look at. We both got the truffle butter $5 extra on the side, which was good but we could have shared it. Our sides were all great. I don’t think we’ll return. I mean $250+ after tip and no bread basket even…

Three of us went for a celebratory birthday on St. Patrick's Day, 2022. Our server, Quinn, was fantastic, explaining the menu very well and making pitch perfect recommendations for our steaks and sides. We had two of the aged ribeyes, one of the aged NY Strips, all three were fantastic, and cooked perfectly medium rare throughout. For sides we chose the wedge salad (best dressing I've ever had), the brussel sprouts, mac and cheese, and a mushroom medley, which was especially out of this world. We wanted a top notch experience with high quality, generous portions, and exquisite service. Quinn made sure we had all those and more. We'll definitely return and will request Quinn as our server if she's available!

My fiancée and i came to Rare to celebrate our engagement and I have to say that it was the single best meal of my life. If you are a fan of places like Flemings, Mortons, etc. this place blows all of those places out of the water and it isn't even close. We ordered the a5 wagyu as an appatizer to start, don't even think about it, just do it. Then for entrees I got the single best steak of my life, the porterhouse. My fiancée ordered the 12 OZ lobster tail which is a must. Ask for Casey, his service was immaculate. We will be traveling to the city of Milwaukee again solely because of this restaurant!

This is one of 2 places to enjoy a dry aged steak in Milwaukee ( to my knowledge) All steaks are minimum dry aged for 45 days...from what I was told. I like that you can go in and pick up steaks to grill at home for around half the price they charge to have it in the restaurant. I'm a dry aged steak freak and love how these steaks taste. The atmosphere was nice, wish there was a better view though.

What an awesome place to celebrate a special occasion! The atmosphere is the classic upscale steakhouse feel I wanted! The bourbon selection was solid and the service was outstanding. Our waiter, Tanner was remarkable and made fantastic recommendations. My only critique would be adding a bit more salt to the steak either prior to or during the cooking process. The meat itself was great but salt was needed to give the flavors/seasonings a bit more support. I used the salt shaker provided to give mine a little help but overall the food was awesome. The mushrooms....highly recommend :)

Wonderful service and food. Michael is the best bartender ever. Yet do need to share there have been recent changes to the menu that should be reconsidered. The lobster bisque was exquisite before and now has been changed to mimic any chain restaurant. Please reinstate the old recipe. Also, cheese on the popovers? Not necessary. The popovers are wonderful all by themselves.
