Overall a nice place to eat and had good portions. We had a rather uneventful waitress who wasn't vary informative and didn't even smile. My son ordered what he thought was a cheese and bacon pizza but asked for a pizza with mozzarella and bacon. We got a pizza with barely any cheese. Feel like the waitress should have clarified he didn't want a cheese pizza as we got charged an extra 2.50 for the mozzarella. So in other words a cheese pizza with bacon would be 21. We got charged 23.50 and got less cheese! Food was good enough to give it another try but again wish the waitress would have been a little friendlier and informative.

A week ago, my friend & I dined at Roman Castle for the first time, during lunch time. Jenny was our server and she told us their specials and served us with water. They have an extensive menu with reasonable prices. My friend questioned whether the spaghetti sauce was marinara or meat sauce because she doesn't like it sweet, like some marinara's are. Jenny went into the kitchen and brought out a 2oz sauce sample. We both thought it was delicious & were extremely impressed they would do that. So, my friend ordered the spaghetti and couldn't decide between meat sauce or meatball (another option was marinara), so she got both, and loved it. I ordered the well reviewed Italian beef & cheese sandwich with au jus, and wasn't disappointed. Lots of ooey gooey cheese atop thinly sliced beef (not deli sliced meat), it was a very authentic Italian Sandwich (not the open face beef sandwich A.I. is linking me to/I should've taken a pucture). In addition to the homemade bun of my sandwich, we were each served a large, homemade, warm, artisan roll, on a cutting board with our meals. We overheard some diners decline theirs, which tells us their food is great with or without their awesome rolls. But, we loved them!! The food portions were filling, especially with the additional signature roll. Jenny was very pleasant & enjoyable, as were other waitresses and lady at the counter when we paid our bill. The outside of the restaurant was beautifully decorated with fresh, hanging flower baskets and cafe style tables/chairs, just as we might find in Rome. Next time, if it's not raining, I'll enjoy an authentic Italian coffee & dessert on the patio. Inside the restaurant, it was decorated in a modest Italian theme. The floorplan is a little outdated, but very spacious between guests. They have both tables and booths, and the color scheme was fresh & vibrant. This was my first visit to the Mauston area, and Roman Castle provided excellent representation of the friendly people here. I'm excited to return, and even though they offer many delicious options, I'll likely reorder the Italian beef Sandwich (it was THAT good)! P.S. Not only do I recommend this restaurant, I highly recommend everything we ate. Spaghetti wasn't an option on the Review form, but it's worth the edit to make the point (it was delicious-I got the leftovers). :)

This used to be one of my FAVORITE places to order from WEEKLY!!
every time I call to make a delivery order, something is missing from my order Or there is food in my order that I did order. Or some of my order is just missing!! The food quality has not been good lately but I still try to give them business!
Many times when I call back to let them know what has been missing , they try to blame the delivery driver!! Which is not acceptable!!! The delivery driver is amazing and very nice!! She’s great!!

Temporarily here in Mauston, WI from SC and I am blown away by how great this restaurant is. Been here for 2 weeks and I already found a place that KNOWS how to grill a steak correctly after being in NC and SC for my entire 37 years of life and found NOONE that could grill a steak correctly! 🤯 I ordered the Roman Feast and let me tell you, not only does everything taste fantastic, but you get a lot of food for $30! (8oz sirloin grilled to a perfect medium rare, 2 slices of garlic cheese toast, side salad with enough salad dressing for the whole salad and not having to ask for more, fettuccini Alfredo with chicken.) ALL for $30! I HIGHLY recommend Roman Castle! This is absolutely my fave restaurant now! ❤️❤️

This is like an old place, BUT in a good way. The atmosphere was super good. It was a 80s or 90s cafe style. Perfect place for old people to chill at. This is the worst restaurant in Mauston. We had to request the senior menu twice before getting it and then had to ask for time to decide. The place wasn’t even busy. The server then turned her attention to another table and it was a bit before she took our order. My SO got lasagna and I got chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and country (white) gravy. Our salads were watery but okay. The lemonade was really good, as was the bread. We ended up waiting a long time, over a half hour, for our food and that’s when the server finally told us lasagna took longer to cook. Eventually the food came in another ten minutes or so. Mine was completely wrong—fried chicken and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. She asked if I wanted it when I said it wasn’t what I ordered. I said no. She took it back and I figured it would just be a few minutes and told my SO to eat. When 15 minutes passed I told the server I wasn’t hungry anymore and to cancel the order and take it off the bill. She said it was almost ready and went back to the front. She then came back and said the manager wouldn’t take it off the bill but would give me 20% off. I still had no food and asked for the manager. She came to the table and said the food was ready and I said for the third time that I didn’t want it at this point. The manager then got nasty and accused me of wanting free food! What food? I hadn’t gotten it! It had been over an hour since we walked in the door! She said people make mistakes but I’d been waiting a long time. She tried to tell me I hadn’t been waiting that long but my SO was halfway through his lasagna that was luke warm in the middle when it came to the table! She was loud and rude and accusatory and walked away while I was talking. The server brought the food out with a box and I scraped it in there. End result was we got a few dollars off the bill. We will never go back. And we never got the desserts that were part of the meal. We expected a pleasant first visit and left very upset at how poorly we were treated.

We are relatively new seasonal residents near mauston. This was our first time at Roman Castle but will DEFINITELY NOT be our last!! They have gained 2 new regulars permanently! Words cannot describe the quality & quantity of the food , absolutely amazing! The best food I've had from ANY restaurant in MANY MANY years. The restaurant was extremely busy and we were greeted very quickly and ALL of the staff was very attentive to our needs, including the owner. A+++++ REVIEW! We will be back for breakfast Sunday morning and I will give a review on that as well. This restaurant is a must try! 😋

I ordered steak and shrimp. My guy ordered the Roman feast. The steak was the worst I ever had. Very tough! No flavor! We had . The rest if the dinner was ok. Service was great. Delight full waitress.

Chefs kiss! So good! The Friday fish was amazing, and the server was a pure delight and suggested a great beer from Capital Brewery called Sticky Paw🥰 10000000% recommend definitely not short on portions. My husband and I both got the meal that comes with 2 pieces of cod, 2 walleye, 4 shrimp, potato and choice of coup or salad and a giant roll. $22 lol we could have split one meal!

I've been all over the country, and I've eaten at diners in about every state, but this one is my hometown. I'd be remissed if I didn't tell everyone about it. I got the opportunity to sample their cuisine, and I've got to say, they are a hidden jewel! The food is sumply the best.

For a small town like Mauston, this place has some good eats. The restaurant looks recently renovated and the food is modern and a good value. I had the Cajun pasta and it was great! If you're looking for more than fast food right by the freeway, this is your place.

OMG!!!! Come here!!! Don’t waste your time with other restaurants in the area! Do yourself the only favor you can today and come to this amazing place! Food was next level! Everyone got something different and loved it! My meatloaf was as if Gordon Ramsey himself cooked it! And the service was awesome! So friendly and obviously a local favorite!

Stopped for the night on a cross country roadtrip. The hotel staff recommended the Roman Castle. We were so glad they did. The food was absolutely awesome. Best pizza ever and the cute desserts were delicious and fun. It was difficult to decide what to order for an entree, it all looked and sounded amazing. Our waitress was friendly, fun and took great care of us.

Please keep your website/google information updated. I had a small business meeting in town and tried to stay organized with a lunch order. Went to the restaurant, and there's a paper sign on the door that they are closed for vacation. Wasted 45 minutes and an interruption in our very closely timed meeting due to this.

Varied menu - we ordered pastas with salad. Plenty of bread - 2 small loaves of plain (needed sidebof butter) plus saturated garlic, cheesy bread.
Lots of food - could have shared 1 plate. All alcohol only comes in bottles, no tap. Server was friendly and provided recommendation but obviously exhausted by tone of voice and mixing up orders. Flies were an issue in our area if the restaurant. Fair prices for 2 with 1 beer.

These 4 star reviews MUST be FAKE

Reminds me of the tv show when Chef Ramsey comes in and brutally gives his opinion of a terribly run restaurant that requests his help.

Our soups came out Luke warm -sent back. Flavor profile was way off. You could tell everything was out of a can.

Pasta sauce was horrible like Prego. Worst sauce I’ve had in an ‘Italian’ restaurant.

The King sized prime rib was a joke. Even if it was a Princess cut would have been inadequately small.
Apparently they were running out of prime rib for the night so they just made the cuts much smaller to keep them rolling out of the kitchen per a worker.
Green beans inedible and soupy like - canned.

Manager/owner came out and asked if everything was ok? I questioned the prime rib. He mumbled something about a few dollars off. Huh!? Take the plate back in and make it right!

Not well run apparently either.

Wife’s meal over cooked and just as bad!
