Drove across Madison during 3:30pm rush hour to order 10 meals for this evening and was told "please we are on rest time and will reopen at 5pm" Yet their website says they are open till 9pm. Do they have a clue how inconsiderate that is? We could have picked any place but we picked one that said they were open. So discussed we left Madison without any Indian food and will definitely not do business with Royal Indian Cuisine in the future.

I went out for dinner tonight, and had the spicy tandoori shrimp masala (with rice) and garlic naan, as well as rasmalai for dessert. The food, service, and atmosphere did not disappoint one bit. Sure, the food may take some time, but it's definitely worth the wait. If you are looking for authentic Indian food, then you will not be disappointed, since this place has something for everybody, regardless of protein type and how spicy you want your food.

I will die on this hill: Royal Indian Cuisine is the best Indian food there is. No one else makes their food quite like them. I will travel however far to eat here because it is so comforting. I highly recommend getting the Chef Special naan, and you can't go wrong with the garlic naan. It does lean more tomatoey for some of their dishes compared to other places, but that's what makes their butter chicken so special. I come here with my friends, family, and for special events. Even the curry in Hong Kong cannot beat Royal Indian Cuisine. Y'all have my heart and soul for this place, and it will forever be my favorite restaurant. Thanks for all that you do! :)

Most horrible experience we had . My wife choked on the samosa. She went out to feel better and then the owner asked us to leave since my wife was unwell and she has children in restaurant. First of all my wife was not sick before visiting this restaurant she felt choked up after eating samosa. Samosa was hard and really bad. We packed the food and threw it in garbage outside. The food is more authentic than most competing restaurants, most have westernized their flavors. The flavors here really pop and each dish was handmade. Even the samosa wraps were made there rather than the store bought wraps many places use. It tasted just like home made.

The appetizers I selected--muligatawny soup and pakora--were great. And the main dish--lamb korma--was easily the best I've ever had. The sauce was flavorful yet subtle. Whenever we come to pick up our order, we wait 10 minutes for someone to come and take care of us. Even if our order is ready, it is not good to be kept waiting. Because the customer is waiting for his food. The communication is very weak, the welcome is very bad. In particular, it takes almost 20 to 30 minutes to receive orders from über DoorDash customers. Those who order from Uber and DoorDash, please consider these when giving order.

I went far out of my way today have a meal at the Royal Indian Cuisine, because friends had taken me there (I live in Minneapolis), and today I had a craving for more of their unique cuisine. The fish curry was extraordinary — moist fish in a delightfully complex sauce. Their gajar ka halwa (carrot pudding), with its blend of flavors, is hands down the best Indian dessert I've ever tasted. I will be sure to stop in the next time I'm in Madison.

Brought my wife and two year old to have dinner here. We had never tried this place before. My wife had the chicken curry and I had lamb rogan josh. The food was PHENOMENAL. I’ve eaten Indian cuisine at many places and this was the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever had. Get the Garlic naan, it was so tasty we ended up getting two orders. Service was prompt and polite. We will absolutely be coming back here.
Side note: our child is allergic to dairy and egg and they were very accommodating to us and our allergy needs. They went through the menu dish by dish and told us which items had his allergens and which ones were safe for him to eat.

Easily the best Indian place out of all of the local ones. More prominent spices/flavor than anywhere else I've tried. Update after a second visit: one good meal can be a fluke, but after our second meal, it’s clear that this is truly a gem. After seeing the Madison’s best, I was pretty surprised to see the lack of royal on the list, and even more surprised to see the restaurants that did make it. Royal is definitely my number 1 pick for Indian food in Madison.

Overall fantastic experience at a reasonable price. We ordered 3 entrees for 3, and we have at least another full meal out of solely left overs. Food was timed extremely well—minor word of caution—the medium heat is a good spice level, but close to our max.

Standouts were the fish pakora, lamb mango, and chicken jalfrezi. Naan tasted fresh and very tender. Mango lassi was also superb.

This incident happened some time ago, but it makes me frustrated and I feel that possible diners should be aware of the experience I had as it was unpleasant. I had a curbside pickup order and the online instructions were to call the restaurant and the food would be brought out. When I arrived at the restaurant, I called and no one responded. I called twice and then decided to just pick up my food inside. On the pickup table, there were two bags and I asked this lady (probably a manager) if my food was there as the bags were not labeled. Both of the bags had no paper to indicate the contents inside and no name. The lady told me my order was "there and on the table" and I grabbed both bags. About twenty minutes after I left, the lady called me and was responding to my pickup call and I told her I already grabbed my food. Then she called me again to berate me for taking another customer's food. She said something along the lines of, "How could you take two bags of food knowing that you only ordered an entree?" I told her that I asked her if my food was there and she told me it was on the table. She never specified and only caught the mistake made on her part twenty minutes later. I did not like her attitude as she accused me of trying to take someone else's food. This was my first time eating here and I thought their portions were big as I ordered an entree, rice, and appetizers. Many other Indian restaurants have large portions and usually prepare the food in two bags for me---I thought this was the case. I returned to the restaurant and gave the extra bag to the customer upon her request. I told them I did not touch it as I had just gotten home when the call was received. The other customer seemed okay but I think this is also very unhygienic. For some odd reason, I ended up apologizing to the rude woman even though I was not at fault. If she had been paying attention for just a minute or even attached a paper slip to the bags, this whole encounter could have been avoided. I have worked in customer service and would never talk to a customer in the way that she had spoken to me. If you are looking for good Indian food where the staff are kind and attentive, this is not the place. I wish I could mark this as negative stars as the one-star rating feels too high, but Google will not allow me to do this. I anticipate that this review will not be taken with seriousness from the establishment as they have responded in that manner to other negative reviews.

I never give 5 stars for anything, but this restaurant truly surpassed all our expectations - the food was delicious and the service was fabulous! Mildly spiced upon request for my children yet thoroughly flavorful. Since my original review we've been very happy ordering take out from here during COVID but finally returned to dining in last night and so happy we did! Although the food is delicious taking out, it rises to a new level when dining in. The naan melts in your mouth and the gobi manchurian has just the right amount of crunch:) Definitely recommended that you dine in, but take out is still great!

I ordered takeout for the first time tonight and can't wait to go back. Hands down the best butter chicken I've had in Madison so far! Unlike most places where the sauce is plentiful and the chicken is sparse, Royal's was full of large pieces of tender chicken cooked to perfection. The sauce was darker in color than I'm used to seeing at other places, presumably b/c it's blended with more tomatoes and less cream, and I'm grateful b/c it was absolutely sublime. I would have liked it spicier (easy to ask for next time), but for those who don't it will be perfect.

The rice was fluffy and deliciously cumin-scented, a simple, traditional touch that too many places skip. I also had the garlic nann, which was soft, lightly buttered, and seasoned perfectly with fresh garlic. Another common side that many places simply don't give much attention to, but not Royal. Grateful for both!

My only (minor) complaint is related to the veg samosas. They were large and cooked perfectly, but could have been spiced more. Nevertheless, I'd probably still order them again.

All to-go containers were generously filled (enough for 2 servings, by the way) to their rims and each wrapped in extra foil or plastic wrap to ensure safe travel. My bag was so obviously packed with care, too. Again, little touches that are frequently overlooked yet so appreciated.

Truly some of the best Indian Madison has to offer. I can't wait to return and try more from Royal's menu, maybe dine in their beautiful dining room next time. Highly recommend!

The taste is authentic and fantastic. The menu is exhaustive. We had Malabar paratha, paneer Tikka masala, malai kofta, bhartha, naan. All portions came with rice. Each dish was delicious, freshly made and served in clean vessels. The service was prompt since we 3 were the only people. The server made all the right suggestions including checking for our spice level..we overestimated our tolerance on the malai kofta, yet it was not off the mark when it comes to taste but the heat did surprise us.

I took one star away because they can spruce up the bathroom. Nothing unhygienic or ugly with the current one but for me the bathroom is just as important when you are going for a sit down meal at a restaurant and can both make or maar your experience. I can confidently say if my travels bring me back to this city, I will be surely visiting the restaurant again.

Ordered for carryout. The restaurant was very inviting and calm. The employee was very friendly and the food was amazing! We had the garlic and the cheese Naan, chicken tikka masala, chicken saag, vegetarian pakora and paneer pakora. It fed our whole family of 5 with plenty of leftovers. My friend and I came here a couple minutes after they opened, so no one else in the restaurant yet. We ordered and our food came super quick, within 10-15 minutes. We ordered chicken tikka masala, bagan bartha, samosas, and a few different types of naan. All of it was SO SO SO good!! Their menu is really extensive and has a ton of vegetarian options, so I'll definitely be back to try more. The lady who served us (I think she was the owner) was really kind and attentive. Probably the best Indian food I've tried in Madison so far. Will definitely be going back :)

I went with a group of people to this restaurant 3 years ago and was blown away with how yummy everything was. Just went here for an anniversary lunch today. Still so good and yummy. Plus the portions are so big that we have wonderful leftovers for later. Highly recommend.

We had order take out. The lady at counter did not even greet properly. We clearly mentioned on call that we need no spice as my toddlers were also gonna have food. The food turned out to be so spicy even for us that literally tears were running off. And she sent in chicken biryani instead egg biryani. Horrible service, too spicy food donot recommend at all.

We were disappointed that there is no buffet but stayed anyway to order from the menu. We ordered Chicken Jalfrezi (with vegetables) and Lamb Mughlai (with mushrooms) and shared them. They were both excellent. Portions are generous, with large chunks of tender meat and plenty of vegetables, and the sauces are rich and aromatic, more so than other restaurants we've been to. Our host was attentive and kind, and she patiently answered all our questions and requests. We will certainly be back--with friends!

I just came here again, first time for dine in. My original review remains the same. This is the best in Madison. The family is wonderful. The food is great.

I have tried every current Indian restaurant in Madison. This is HANDS DOWN THE BEST.

The flavors are authentic. The family is amazing - not using that in the general sense. They truly care about the food and their customers.

Please support them. You will not be disappointed. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Update: look at how the owner responds to negative reviews and see if you want to be treated that way when eating there. She thinks I’m someone else and berates you if you are disappointed with anything. That tells you all you need to know! Stay away!!!

If you're going to spend time outside of your home to eat, you expect only a few things. Quality food and quality service. That's not what you get here.

Hurts to say this as a fellow brown person, but this food does not represent our culture but more importantly, the attitude of the workers doesn't represent us even more. The manager/lady...not sure how she identifies but they were super rude as I've seen other reviews state. Not sure how you are in the service industry and treat your customers so poorly. The food was subpar, and not authentic at all, and not sure how it's possible to screw up naan but the taste was "naan-existent".

The goat curry had no spice or kick, and seemed watered down to cater to people who don't really want to try Indian food, but a generic Walmart version. I know it's Wisconsin but try to make people feel like the food is from the eastern hemisphere at the very least. So disappointed and rating one pity star because I'm forced to.

I strongly caution against renting out the party hall at Royal Indian Cuisine. My wife and I had an exceedingly unpleasant encounter with the establishment. Initially, we met with the manager to plan a birthday party for our one-year-old son. We reached an agreement in which there was no rental or event fee, and we would solely cater from Royal Indian Cuisine. The only cost would be based on the number of guests, with an additional charge for decorations, which we were considering. We planned for roughly 25-30 people, and the manager indicated a per-person fee of $22-$25, along with an estimated decoration fee of $100-$150. We were advised that we would have to provide drinks, but the manager would provide paper plates, tablecloths, and napkins. We accepted this agreement and selected the food items we wanted to serve.

After a few days, she contacted us to confirm our plans, and we notified her that we also wanted to celebrate our other son's birthday on the same day. She seemed bewildered and so we decided to have an in-person meeting. Upon meeting her, she sternly waved her finger at us and spoke disrespectfully and unprofessionally, accusing us of cheating her. She was unhappy with us wanting to celebrate our other son's birthday and stated that she would not benefit from it. We were bewildered since we had already agreed to a per-person fee, and there was no event fee. We did not perceive adding our son to the celebration as a big deal since it would not affect the number of guest . The only difference would be his name on the cake, which we were providing. She then said "you can only celebrate one birthday or else you can’t have the hall and you can just take the food to go" The manager's unprofessional conduct led us to distrust her, and we decided not to proceed with the event.

I strongly recommend avoiding Royal Indian Cuisine, as the manager's behavior indicates that she is an unethical businessperson who reneges on agreements and levies exorbitant fees. Please ensure that you have a contract in place, or else you may be subjected to ridiculous up-charges.

I’d love to have tried their food to be able to review it; unfortunately, that never happened. I placed a pickup order and was given an ETA of 40 minutes. Went to pick it up and was told 20 more minutes. No problem, but 20 minutes later they hadn’t even started cooking it. If you’re busy or short-staffed, say that up front instead of wasting your customers’ time.

We discovered Royal Indian a few weeks ago and my family and I absolutely love it. The food is amazing and the prices are better than other local Indian restaurants. In addition, they don’t play with that spice level. If you want “spicy or hot”, you’ll get it! I actually had to downgrade to “mild” when we ordered our family Christmas meal from them because; although delicious the “medium” level was too much for me and my chapped lips last time.

I don’t give a lot of reviews but considering that I opted not to cook a traditional Christmas dinner and order from them is kind of a big deal. Also, I’m writing this at 5am the following day and I cannot wait to heat up my leftovers for breakfast.

Royal is hands down the best Indian restaurant I have come across in my 5 years of living in Madison. I would HIGHLY recommend the butter chicken, chicken 65 and all of their Nan’s (especially the cheese or garlic). I live on the other side of town and still try and make the commute monthly due to how amazing their food is. The owners are extremely kind as well! All around, a wonderful restaurant!

We have been ordering from this restaurant for a couple years now and it always so delicious. The food is incredibly flavorful - our favorites are the palak chole and the dal fry. By far our favorite Indian restaurant in Madison. We sometimes get food from other places, but find we are always wish we had ordered from Royal Indian instead. First time having Indian food. Not sure what to expect but food was good. Ordered Butter chicken and tikka chicken masa with garlic naan from the reviews I saw online. Wouldn’t mind trying again next time I’m in the area but wouldn’t drive to madison just for it though. Wait time was not bad, 25 minutes. If only they would allow dine in, but I do understand the staffing shortage now a days.
1 recommendation I would like to see is pictures of the food with the menu. It would help first timers, like me, and others decide what to order as a picture is a thousand words.

We LOVE Royal Indian. We were very sad when Haldi Masala, the Indian restaurant that inhabited the same location before Royal Indian closed. We liked Haldi Masala so much that we had them cater our wedding!

That said, we LOVE Royal Indian too. I've fallen in love with their Fish Curry, and my wife loves their Paneer, and we both love their Mango ice cream! If we were to get married again, we'd ask Royal Indian to cater in a heartbeat!

Also, the owner is a DELIGHT! She is incredibly kind and respectful.

Finally, order directly from them! No reason GrubHub, EatStreet, etc. should get any portion of their income. Calling in a pick up order is SUPER easy and always accurate in our experience.

We can't recommend them enough!

UPDATE: Royal Indian is STILL excellent. Take out portions are usually good for two meals. The value is excellent, the owners are wonderful. I couldn't recommend this place and more strongly. If you're looking for a suggestion on what to order, our favorites are the Daal Fry and Fish Curry.

From Minneapolis, loved the authentic North india food. We had dinner, liked it so much that we placed a repeat order for lunch. Very flexible, gave us a very personalise experience. We loved Aloo paratha ( Indian bread stuffed with Potatoes) and daal ( lentil ) fry . - mouth watering. Will be missing when I go to MSP, but I know where to go when I come next.
