Stopped in nearing closing time (about 45 minutes before close), btu they were happy to seat us and take our orders. I ordered a dish and asked for level 3 spicy, and it came out with the exact perfect amount of spice. Just enough to get the sinuses open, not enough to burn. I asked the front desk if they had a table available, and they said it would be ready in 5 minutes. Ten minutes later, I followed up — still no table, but they said it would be soon. Had a first date here & it was awesome as per usual. He & I went back two weeks ago & it was awesome yet again. His turn to write:
"The food(and the company) was exemplary. Comforting flavors, and a nice blend of South East Asian spices made for a wonderful experience. My turn again. I always get the noodle dishes, but I've heard everything else is also fantastic. My top suggestion is their pad see ew (they spell it Pad-Z-You, if I remember correctly). The noodles are springy; the vegetables are fresh; everything about it is amazing.
My ONLY complaint is that the service varies every single time I've been there. Usually it is perfect, but sometimes they check in too often, sometimes not at all. This doesn't affect the quality of the food, but sometimes it leaves me without a glass of water 😭😭😭 lololol

No frills clean place that is best described by the menu and the food. Service is also spot on and they are happy to discuss items on menu what they like and what is similar . So don't be shy.
Everything we ordered was excellent and so tasty. My husband thought the Thai iced tea was better than other places. Thicker in constitution.

We are done with this place. Thai Basil is right across the street and we will be taking our business there. We called and placed an order for pick up and informed them over the phone that we would be paying with check and they agreed. When we arrived there, they told us we could not pay with check. What is more upsetting is that when we got home we realized we were missing the Pad Thai that we ordered, which had been replaced with an order of Pad Ka Ree. We called to calmly inform them and were met with their defensiveness. They did not take any responsibility or apologize. In fact, they insisted that it was our fault because we didn't repeat the order back to them. And we didn't know if the order was repeated back to us -- because their phone system is poor and it was hard to hear them.

They then said they would listen to the phone call recording to verify if they had repeated the order back to us or not, at which point they hung up on us. Five minutes later, they called us back to inform us that they (these are their exact words) "reviewed the phone call recording and they were right and we repeated the order to you." They proceeded to say "But if you want we will make you a Pad Thai for you to come pick up ONLY if you bring back the incorrect item." Not sure what they were planning to do with the order they wanted returned to them.

Sa-Bai Thong is a Madison institution. The quality has been continuously excellent for at least the last 25 years (how long I have been going). The cucumber salad, chicken satay, sticky rice with coconut custard and the 42 with tofu (Pa-Naeng Curry) are all sublime. I highly recommend checking it out.

Please don’t support this business! I posted a not great review of this restaurant yesterday, but since deleted my review (I felt like I was being harassed). Someone(s) associated with this place stalked my name and left fake 1-star reviews on my small, individually owned business.

I know these fake reviews/fake accounts (Tootsie Fumblepants and Wobble McSnickers) are associated with this restaurant because there is one review on their account for a Madison based company. I don’t live in Madison and the reviews were made minutes after my review.

They don’t have fresh ginger in this restaurant that they cook with (how is that possible at a Thai restaurant I don’t know), and they used too much fish sauce in the Tom Kha soup, the pad Thai was too sour, the yellow curry was not creamy… I came here because of the positive reviews and that’s why I am writing this one…. The mango custard that came with the sticky rice was a lovely surprise. Excellent service. Keep in mind that their spice levels are meant for Caucasians, so if you like it Thai-spicy, you will have to specify. It wasn't at all bland, just not hot. This place has so much potential but the food was a little bit of a letdown.

First the good:

- The servers were very friendly and served everything with a very positive attitude
- The jungle curry was fantastic
- the gui chai (chive dumpling) was yummy
- they have a vegan version of everything

The bad

- Tom kha soup was good, but had only mushrooms (plus tofu since we ordered the vegan version), no other veggies
- The drunken noodles didn't seem drunken enough (there was not much sauce)
- the veggie spring rolls and veggie summer rolls were both so-so

The ugly:

- Everything was sweet
- the sauces were all sweet
- it didn't feel like Thai spicy 😂

The waitress answered our many questions. We shared the Tom Ka soup, it was perfect, with enough for leftovers. I had the Pa - Naeng with chicken. I came to eat here on the recommendation of my boyfriend, who used to be a regular customer here. The dishes we ordered were delicious, the tableware was beautiful, and they even provided hot water, so overall it was very good. I didn't give it five stars because there was a little incident. The Chicken Satay we ordered was delicious, but there were some crispy parts in the middle of two skewers. The texture was a bit bouncy, and I felt like it wasn't fully cooked, which made me worried about parasites, so I didn't finish it and reported the issue to the waiter. The waiter took it back to the kitchen and then brought it out to show me, using the flashlight on the phone to ask where I could see it wasn't cooked. I explained that it was mainly a texture issue. Later, the waiter told us they would report the situation to the kitchen manager and waived the fee for the Chicken Satay. My boyfriend said the waiter seemed to look at me with dissatisfaction at the time. I felt a bit wronged, but we finished all the other dishes because they were indeed delicious. It was just this Chicken Satay that had a strange texture and we left alone. We didn't want to make trouble for no reason, and today we came here to celebrate something happy.

In conclusion, this is a restaurant with very good flavors, still recommend to try.

A few favorite among my top Asian restaurants. The food here is fantastic! I love their Yum Ta-Wai and Pad Jadet. The prices are extremely reasonable and you get an appropriate portion for the food.

The service is decent but on ocassion you have to take initiative to get water refilled or get your check.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated, has plenty of seating and has a prominent take-out system. They have a large free parking lot, have plenty of vegetarian options and are wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant.

An absolute gem of a restaurant. The regular front hides impressive Thai food restaurant. The food is quickly and expertly prepared with fresh ingredients. Everything we tried (five noodle dishes, two soups, two curry and two fried rice) was delicious. We were in Madison for three nights and at here twice (admittedly, because of the dearth of options late on a Sunday) but we're thoroughly satisfied and delighted with the food both times. The restaurant is also tastefully decorated and the wait staff superlative. And the cherry on top is that the food is generously portioned and reasonably priced! Highest recommendation.
