Wonderful neighborhood Italian restaurant!

We are fortunate to live near this gem and love coming for a nice dinner with family or appetizers and cocktails on a date night. Sitting outside on the patio feels like your on vacation and the restaurant is very charming and cozy too.

The food is delicious, including some of the best pizza around. We sometimes just order a pizza to go if craving it.

The servers are very attentive and polished and we are grateful for the patience and accommodation when we bring our young child along for dinner.

We love Sala and can’t recommend it enough to others!

Sitting outside at Sala transports you to little cafes in old Italy 🇮🇹 with a vibe that is unmatched. The paninis are well made with thinly slices ingredients and crispy bread. Truly a gem next to UWM. I tried Italian beef with giardenira which was delightful. Very convenient location with street parking and beautiful setting makes this a regular place for the locals.

The food was wonderful. In our party of 4 we had a pizza, the super Sugo, and a pasta dish. All were outstanding. The waitstaff was kind and helpful and the atmosphere was good. The only downside was the time. The place was about half full, yet it took 2 hours to get in our order, get served, and finish. A bit long I think.

This place is great but so overpriced! I had just returned from trip to Florence and Rome so may have been more accustomed to those prices but spent well over $120 for a dinner for 2 (we had pizza, Cesar salad, split pasta dish and 2 glasses of red wine). Beth server was great !!! Very attentive!! Food was excellent loved the Carciofi !! N the flourless chocolate cake was da bomb. Halibut special in Dijon sauce was great. The old fashioned sour uses sour syrup as a heads up. It was wife's retirement n they made it very special with candle in the canoli n a card as well!! Very thoughtful !!!! Great dining experience. I like their fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp. I do feel it's somewhat overpriced, however . Pasta and sauce with some standard sized shrimp shouldn't cost almost $40. I enjoyed the arugula salad and the bruschetta was very flavorful and crispy. I love their creamy Italian sodas and always get the hazelnut flavor. Our server was phenomenal. Great place for a birthday dinner.

We dined here on NYE and it was our first visit here. We live on the opposite side of town, so don’t get over here often but our plans led us to this vicinity that evening. Service was very attentive and friendly. There was some specials for the holiday that night and I ordered the lobster pasta. The bread they brought out was plain though. Needs seasoning or salt on it. We put salt on the bread and dipped in the sauce they brought for it.much better after that! Dinner entree also came with a side salad, and the creamy garlic dressing is very tasty. My husband tried a pizza. He thought the crust was good, but didn’t think the sauce was that good he said. We will return and try other things. I liked my meal a lot. Nice place, have had friends all recommend and it was a nice place at a decent price. No leftovers we ate it!

1. Ran out of menus, the restaurant wasn’t even full and we had to wait at our table for water and menus when we had a reservation.
2. Service was unreliable . Our server was obviously tired and overworked and unfortunately took it out on us with bad customer service.
3. Food was… interesting. Menu was confusing and didn’t have common options for an italian restaurant. The only thing that could have saved this was the pasta (we did order appetizers and they were not good), my chicken alfredo was good but my boyfriends shrimp still had their tails on, which was confusing.
4. Don’t bother making a reservation, online said they were completely booked both inside and outside during the time we ate. But outside was bare and inside wasn’t full at any point in our saturday night dinner time.

If you like and appreciate Italian food, I would not eat here. The cocktails were very mediocre which also took over 30 minutes to get to the table, we got the appetizer before our drinks, the special was sold out by 715pm (we had already ordered it and the server came back 35 mins later to tell us it was no longer available) and the food, to put it lightly, was lacking on almost every level. The arrabbiata and the red sauce were the same but with some pepper flakes added, the sausage was eerily similar to jimmy dean breakfast sausage. But more so the red sauce could be compared to chef boyardeee or spaghetti-O’s at best. Better off getting a jar of Victoria’s or Rao’s sauce from the grocery store and making your own, it’ll taste better and cost less. I don't have a vendetta against this restaurant, it was just a very unfortunate experience.

Very expensive for what you get. Walked up, water all over the floor and sat in a broken chair. Had the swordfish special but there was no flavor and the risotto was very undercooked. Overall, $40 for one of the most disappointing meals I've had in a long time. Do yourself the favor and skip this one.

The bread was bland and overwhelmed by the seseme seed crust served with cheap olive oil.

The meal was even worse. I ordered the Marsala which was recommended to me. The noodles had no body, the sauce was watery and didn't stick to the pasta at all, there was hardly enough sauce to cover the noodles, and the pork medallions, which were really the size of chicken breasts, were cooked to an almost leather texture.

I wish I could comment on the food, but I did not get to eat it. I made a reservation for my boyfriend’s birthday dinner for 7pm. We arrived at 7pm and were seated by the host immediately and told our server would be right with us. No server came to our table to greet us or get us water. After waiting for 30 minutes, we decided to leave. There were at least 5 servers, and 2 hosts working, and plenty of tables that were empty. I would understand the wait if someone came over to greet us and let us know they were busy, but we were never acknowledged. I never write reviews, but I’ve never experienced such a lack of service a restaurant before. I wouldn’t rely on coming here for a special night.

They let us know they had another reservation for 2 people they would need to honor. This says a lot about them and their service commitment to their local diners. I am a carpenter who was working around the corner from sala for about a month. Every morning I went to sala for my morning coffee. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. impressive jade plants line the windows, interesting art occupy the walls, and friendly faces greet you at the bar. Jordan is the barista and she's wonderful. She is welcoming and authentic. She became familiar with me quickly, remembering my name and my order. Our conversations always brightened my morning. I haven't dined at sala but my morning experience with Jordan is always 5 stars

A neighborhood restaurant that serves such delicious Italian cuisine. Decorated in red with sparkling lights, with tables spaced far enough apart you can enjoy your company.
Unique, homestyle Italian foods that have so much flavor.
The lemon-asparagus risotto on a recent special was exquisite! Served alongside a perfectly prepared red snapper, the dish was unique and something I would gladly order again.
Appetizers we shared included goat cheese paired with one of the best red sauces I've ever had, Sala's own Sugo sauce. If they bottled it, I would have purchased a trio to bring home.
The tiramisu cake was refreshing, surprisingly light, and full of coffee flavor with a nice chocolate background.
Our server, Deborah, was a delight! She patiently answered many of the questions we had regarding the choices. When she didn't know the answer to one, she sought the information from the chef. Never hovering, she seemed to be there at just the right time when we needed something.
The only hiccup with the evening was that I had secured a reservation for Saturday evening at 6:45 via a call a few nights before. When we arrived, the host could not find our reservation using my name or phone number. It was solved by immediately seating us. We had planned to have drinks in the comfortably lit bar when we arrived but adjusted accordingly. That problem will be easily avoided next time by using the online reservation system, where I will have solid proof of our appointed time. To be clear, the host never made me feel like he didn't believe me about the phone reservation.
We will be back to try more of the menu, including the awesome looking, thin crust pizza they serve.

We stopped by for a pre-show meal in a location where our sons could meet us after classes at UWM. What a treat! The dining room is both cozy and has plenty of room. This was a big disappointment. I'll put a caveat that it was lunch, not dinner. The menu was minimal. Like bare bones minimal...pastries and "paninis". Quote marks because they were anemicly toasted white bread with dry as dust filling. I ordered turkey and cheddar. Truth in advertising for sure.....there was NOTHING else in the sandwich, including anything with moisture. Ordering was done standing at the bar and then brought to the table. The atmosphere seems to be a shout out to local amateur artists, so kudos for that support.

I want to start with the positive. The kitchen is very good. Whoever is making the food knows what they are doing.

But we were definitely forgotten about by our server and the menu itself was uninspired, featuring very generic Italian food. I didn't see the specialties that the Sicilian region is known for.

The atmosphere was fine but again featured artwork and imagery from all over Italy. If you are going to be a "Sicilian" restaurant, you should showcase that region specifically.

And this is a big pet peeve of mine personally. We are eating at a white table cloth establishment with specialty cocktails, our cocktails were served without garnishes and my drink which was served over ice was left sitting out for several minutes while the bartender was being trained on the second drink.

I am partial to Sicilian food as my family is from the island.

Again the food was good (even if not particularly Sicilian), but I would say everything else was lacking in someway. 3/5 would not return, there are other Italian places in Milwaukee that are a solid 5/5 especially at this price point.

Although a bit pricey, Sala offers good food and great service. A small bar offers a nice spot to have a drink and wait for your table, and two inside dining areas (as well as an outdoor patio for the warmer months) offer plenty of seating options. The spinach salad was delicious, loaded with fresh strawberries. However, I would have loved a little more goat cheese. My husband ordered the split pea and ham soup, which was a bit thick in consistency yet very good. There was plenty of ham and fresh vegetables, making this hearty side a nice dish on its own. We went on a Thursday night with friends when Sala was also having their trivia night. Although we did not participate, the questions were great, and it sounded like a lot of fun!

Dined there last night for our 12 year anniversary. Made the reservation online. Wanted it to be a surprise but they called to confirm the reservation with my partner (we’ve dined there many times before so I’m assuming we must be in the system together) so there went the surprise. I got the shrimp sapotito -was super bland so instead of sending it back and waste food, I waited 10 minutes for the waitress and asked if they could get me a side of Alfredo to salvage it. 20 minutes later I added it to my cold pasta dish (but it helped). That added $5.50 onto the bill. We ordered 2 cannolis for dessert to go -the absolute worst I’ve ever had (and, I’ve had state fair cannolis). Clotted, broken cinnamon cream with BLUEBERRIES -aweful -$8 each. They did give us a very nice anniversary card signed by the entire staff. That and the bread were the best past of the meal. Something has definitely changed from what they used to be :(

We had a 10/10 dinner at SALA Modern-Sicilian last night. I love the intimate dining space and the warm vibes. We started off with some cocktails that were wonderful….I ordered two of the cucumber/ginger drinks because they were THAT good and owner was nice enough to give me the recipe when I asked.

For food we had:
-Sicilian New Years soup (with lentils)
-tomato and goat cheese with crostini
-side salads with housemade Italian vinaigrette and tableside parmigiano reggiano shaving
-rack of lamb (THIS WAS SO FREAKING Amazing….top 3 of my life) served w angel hair pasta and a walnut pesto
-linguine w shrimp, tomato, in a white wine butter sauce (generous with the big juicy shrimp)
-gorgeous cappuccino made w Valentine coffee beans
-lemon tart that was so perfectly flaky and a great balance of sweet and tart
-tiramisu

Sala is overpriced and not worth the money I just spent on two pastas and a pizza. I got linguini and shrimp in a white butter sauce that was watery and bland and only came with 3 pieces of shrimp when this dish cost $32. wt* is that?! There was no flavor at all while the margarita pizza was beyond garlicy and the most off tasting margarita pizza I've had. Their pizza uses chopped basil and sliced tomato unlike the original margarita pizza with cherry tomato and whole leaves of basil. The food is *very* untraditional Italian.
The third pasta was their sugo red sauce with angel hair it tasted like something used in the sauce was burnt.
Overall not a high quality restaurant with high quality prices.

I ordered the arrabbiata, which is Italian for angry and is a pretty good way to describe the state I left in. It's like I went into a twilight zone where food is absolutely tasteless. The sauce was far too watery and could've been cooked down far more, and there was no seasoning beyond canned tomato that I could taste at all. Not even the good DOP San Marzano kind either. Second, what's with the sausage? This dish is supposed to have HOT sausage, that was unmistakably SWEET Italian sausage. It was okay sausage in of itself, just in no way the HOT sausage the menu said it would be. The red pepper didn't help any at all either, no spices or flavor to be found anywhere in this restaurant.

Finally, what's so uniquely Sicilian about this spot? The food is a sad medigan impersonation, and the spot itself borders on stereotypical. Che disgrazia.

Subsequent to my review I received a call from the owner of this restaurant. We had a wonderful conversation and the owner’s concern and sincerity were most apparent. She truly cares about her business and her reputation and I very much appreciate the fact that she took the time to address my concerns.

We’re all human and we all have slightly off days. I understand the challenges faced in today’s restaurant business. We will most definitely return to give it another try.

I do not take pleasure in providing less than stellar reviews but I feel compelled to share our experience for the benefit of both the restaurant and any future patrons. We had visited this restaurant a few years ago when we first moved to the Milwaukee area from Chicago and had a great dining experience.

My wife and I arrived promptly for our 6:30 dinner reservation and immediately noticed that the place was pretty much empty. After being seated we ordered cocktails and when they finally arrived they were very weak and lacked the flavor one expects. Gin & tonics are not difficult to make, all we tasted was tonic.

We shared the artichoke appetizer which was flavorful and enjoyable, but we both noted that the server gave us the unavoidable impression that we were being rushed - odd, considering the restaurant was empty. We ordered our entrees, my wife chose a small specialty pizza and I ordered the seafood pasta, both of which sounded mouthwatering from their description on the menu.

The pizza arrived undercooked and cold and my seafood pasta was best described as spaghetti O’s in flavor with a couple of shrimp and scallops. While the seafood was good the pasta left a lot to be desired.

We did not eat our meals, rather, we asked for the check, paid and left. We did not ask to wrap our food as it was not worth taking.

So very disappointing as we were really looking forward to a nice meal. For $120+ Before gratuity we expected more and I can only hope that our experience was unique, but I doubt it.

Fabulous food and service. It’s has become our favorite place to eat whether it’s a special occasion or just a Friday night. Excellent pasta and pizza! Great wine selection and fun cocktails. We always enjoy our dinners here.

I really enjoyed this cozy Italian restaurant, tucked away on the East side.

The ambiance was great, laid back and nice lighting for a conversation for a date. I fact, because of that, I forgot to take photos.

The cocktails were delicious. They have some unique ingredients as well that you can taste, so it's not just hype.

The eggplant appetizer was delicious. It was seasoned just right and not oily. I have had some bland eggplant appetizers in some restaurants but that was not the case here.

I ordered the pasta bolognese and it was not only tasty, but the meat was ground just right and blended well.

I had a great time but due to the great conversation and ambiance I slacked on taking photos, except the main course.

Came here with my girlfriend and heard the owner shouting slurs and threats to one of the employees. He seemed unhinged. Scared my girlfriend. We are never coming back and I hope the employee is ok.

I love this Italian gem in Milwaukee !!!
Teresa is the host with the most!! Her staff is incredibly knowledgeable & attentive!!
The food is authentic Italian ( love love love the Ossobuco!!!!). The decor @ ambiance is relaxing & cheerful at the same time.
I had to host a special event for the SANNIO’s Consortium and Teresa worked with me on perfectly matching the selected wines with the appetizer & entree. She was incredibly accommodating. There was another big table waiting for us to leave so they could be seated , but we never felt rushed. Like I said, Teresa is truly the hostess with the ’mostess’. Highly suggest this place for your special occasions or for a casual week night dinner. You won’t be disappointed.
