We have been here various times throughout the years when we visit LaCrosse and always look forward to the salad bar which use to be well stock with various options in a Supper Club way. Wow. Arlene would be cracking skulls in this place. Soup on the salad bar was all water not even a vegetable. No lettuce in the salad bar. No rolls. The service is horrible. Guests standing around not being helped. Pork chop was completely raw to the point of bleeding. The server stared at it like she didn't know what to do. She took it back and cooked the same one. Really want your food cooked next to something from someone 's table. Last time for us here. What a horrible way to manage a La Crosse icon.

Have been to Schmidty’s before and always had a great meal for a good price. Salad Bar & Soup was terrific. Appetizers and entrees were OK at best. Very greasy and I don’t think oil had been changed in awhile. Service was slow but to give them the benefit of the doubt, there was a large party in the adjoining dining room.

Normally a very good dinner, but we arrived at 7:30pm and the salad bar was nearly empty, one roll left and the broiled fish was not very good. I asked to swap out salad bar for the vegetables but that was not an option unless added charge. When you pay full price, no matter the time you arrive, the dinner should be the same quality and selections as any other time. I blame the management for not attending to this. Still, we like the place, but would not go late. A $60 bill

First time in after the change in ownership. Wasn't impressed then, same can be said for now. Our cheese curds were definitely the highlight of the meal. My patty melt.....was grilled nicely. Otherwise the burger patty had no flavor, and the texture was terrible. Fries were nice and crisp though. The wall our booth butted up to was heavily flecked with previous guests food/beverage, who knows for how long. I had high hopes for some improvement over the former operators, but I guess not.

One of my favorite restaurants. Always very good food, great service and reasonable prices. (Great steaks, prime rib, and shrimp). UPDATE 7/8/2023: My wife and I visited Schmidty's for dinner again last night. It's the first time in 50 years of patronizing Schmidty's that I have been sadly disappointed. My wife ordered a prime rib sandwich that came as a big piece of fatty prime rib and two small squares of black non edible toast. I ordered the prime rib special and received a piece of meat that was not discernable as prime rib. It was tasty but not up to Schmitty's usual standards. I also ordered shrimp with my prime rib. The batter that has always been a favorite has been replaced with a batter that is characteristic of a fast food restaurant . I will, of course, give Schmidty's another chance in hopes that they will return to their old qualities. Update 07/29/25: We returned to Schmidty's for my birthday and was again disappointed with the food and slow service. As a side note, our waitress was very nice and did her best to give us good service.

Normally the food is good, but tonight I found out that the butterfly shrimp that is on the menu is something that the cooks do not know how to make and the chives on the baked potatoes is actually parsley. When speaking with staff, they thought it was funny. No one would take any accountability. This is so sad. UPDATE, I spoke to a cook she will cook butterfly shrimp and was told that butterflying the shrimp does make it taste any different. I beg to differ, as every which way shrimp is prepared, broiled, batter fried etc., does change the taste. Again - the attitude is not appreciated.

We had a fabulous experience on a Saturday night while in the La Crosse area visiting our son. The steaks were phenomenal. I had the Jameson whiskey filet and my husband had the queen cut prime rib. They were both perfectly cooked to medium rare, cut like butter, and were seasoned nicely. The salad bar was ok- maybe a little sparse but very fresh. The chicken dumpling soup was to die for. Our younger son had the cheeseburger and even that was great and they still cook to order (medium rare)!! Yay! We will definitely be back. Karissa was our server and she was fantastic. What a friendly, caring, and attentive young lady! Do not take her for granted; you’ve got a gem in her. Our food could have stunk and we’d still give 5 stars for her genuine, heartfelt service!! I know they have reasons for choices of staff they hired or didn't. But this place isn't welcoming and not fun or family feeling. I've waited for service and watched others have to find staff. I've been hanging there for almost 50 years. My parents took us there as kids. one of the first places I drank,(legally). Need I say more? But the bar service has gone way downhill. Waiting up to 10 minutes for a beer after they take my empty without trying to SELL me another. Even when when we request another, it gets ignored or forgotten. I called in to place a pick up order on 7/9, however, the hostess was incredibly rude, to the point that I canceled my order altogether. We've been eating here for many years,but the takeout has really declined. Tonight was the final straw. We had family in from out of town,and thought we'd do takeout for supper. We ordered a cheeseburger meal,a chicken strip kids meal,and five 3 piece cod meals. The chicken strip meal wasn't in the bags when we stopped to pick it up, so we had to wait for them to make it. Got home, 2 of the fish meals didn't have their baked potatoes. None of the fish meals had a lemon wedge,butter for the roll,tartar sauce,or cutlery. Also 2 of the salad dressing lids weren't closed completely, and spilled all over everything in the bag. Just ridiculous! It didn't used to be like this.

We stopped here for dinner and had a great dry martini and onion rings. The dinner was another story. I had the Parmesan crusted walleye and baked potato. The salad bar was fine, nothing special. My walleye was mushy with bread crumbs on top. The baked potatoes were warm, not hot. My husband had the ribeye steak. It was a half of an inch thick, over cooked and flavorless. This is not the Schmidty’s of old and I would Not eat there again. Also, prices are very high for the low quality of food.

Historically a favorite worth 5 stars. Bit by bit they have been slipping for a while now . First I'll go over the current positives, then the negatives.

* Over all the food quality is fairly good.
* One of the few remaining places to have a soup and salad bar!

And now some negatives.

* Used to have 2 soups, now just 1.
* The longer the soup has set out, the colder it is. It's as if the warming plate it's on is off or not working. The last few times the temp seemed to me to be maybe around 100 deg. F or a tad more. Not only is that unappetizing, it's also risky for causing food poisoning When the fresh pot is put out though, it's piping hot.
* Prices have risen to where I'm not finding as much value as in the past. Yes I understand inflation is up and staff probably cost more than previous, but even factoring that in I think it's the case. Value for money is of course subjective, but in my estimation I think they push it a bit over the line in some cases. For example, one of the cheaper items on the menu, a grilled ham and cheese plus 1 side is around $11 if memory serves. Yeah I don't expect to get that for $5 anymore, but $8 would seem more in line.
* They seem to take family friendly to the degree that becomes generally unfriendly for pretty much everyone else. As a case in point, we were there once when a young child (high chair age) was literally screaming and shrieking at ear splitting levels, repeatedly and over a prolonged time. It was one of the worst examples of it I have ever encountered and that's saying something. We finally asked the waitress if they could resolve the problem. Well, after management was consulted we got back word that no they were unwilling to ask the offending family to tone things down. Also, they could offer no change in seating location since they were full. This was on a Saturday evening even, though as bad as it was it would have been too much any day or time. I think people are probably hard wired to have their attention shifted to the sounds of a baby or small child who is crying out. It caused us not only to not be able to relax and enjoy each other's company at dinner, it actually brought us stress and made it hard to hear each other even talk. That's not the experience I want to have dining out. Please, if your child is too young to behave appropriately in public, get a baby sitter, go to Chuckee Cheese, or maybe tough it out at home until your child is up to it. Or I guess eat at Schmidty's because they don't seem to have any problem with it?
* Service quality has declined from a once excellent or very good, down to merely good on average. It's still alright but watch out for any further decline.

Everything else is I'd say is in the satisfactory classification; definitely not bad but not necessarily outstanding either.

For context, we have been somewhat regular customers of Schmidty's for about 30 years. If things stay the same we will still stop in here or there. If they get better, I will be happy to restore a higher rating to them and visit more often. If things slide down too much, we will likely just avoid it.

I have been ordering my favorite sandwich, the prime rib philly, at Schmidtys for years and was always really pleased until now. The last 2 times I got it, it was missing like half the prime rib. It was piled high with big pieces of onion and was more like an onion sandwich with a few mushrooms and some prime rib, even the cheese was less than it used to be! The first time I thought maybe was a fluke so I ordered it again and it still sucked. The cocktails were more pricey, too and they must be measuring their shots like they do in the national chain restaurant bars. It's too bad, had great hopes for the new ownership.

Presentation of food was non existent. Looked like they just threw the fish and baked potato on the plate that was not a big plate. Waitress dropped our food at the table and walked away. We actually wanted ketchup and steak sauce. Ended up getting a bus boy to get us some. The food was ok. Had to wait for salad bar to be replenished and not alot to choose from. The lettuce was wilty and not fresh. Seats haven't been changed in years, felt like we were sinking at our booth. Very loud in the bar area. Probably one of the worst experiences I’ve had in a restaurant. Steak was raw. Walleye did not look good. Baked potatos were cold and hard. Mashed potatoes cold and pretty sure they were instant. A pasta dish was good. The cod was as decent. The salad bar was the only thing that saved the day since the steak and walleye were inedible. Waitress was very disinterested. This was 630 on a Saturday night in the dining room. Hostess was kind and able to get us a pitcher of water. I grabbed paper towels at the hostess stand as the waitress never brought extras as we asked. Between taking our order and our food arriving she never stopped by.

I don’t understand all the good reviews. Maybe this was simply a bad night but I wouldn’t come back. Bar looked decent. I would not recommend.

We had a birthday party of 6 girl friends in our 70's and up!. Ate in the bar 2/1 hat nite. The food was great and our little waitress was just the Best! Wish I had gotten her name to mention it! She made our good time together even better. We will all be back, BTW, the old fashioned"s were exceptionally good, as were the bloody marys! The steak was "bon appettie!" We look forward to our next celebration at Schmidty's! JS & friends

They didn’t serve us any food, service was really bad. didn’t even get food and ignored us for 40 minutes and chose to left the place
