Me and My girlfriend came here for some pick me up barbecue, and we weren't expecting a lot from such a humble little place. But DANG! they did not disappoint! we came in a few minutes earlier than our online order said it would be ready because we thought it looked cute and we're totally fine with waiting for a few minutes. the incredibly nice staff not only brought our food out a few minutes early, but they gave us some extra food to apologize for the wait! There is a reason Smoky Jon's has so many awards, the BBQ is Amazing!!! We got the brisket, pulled pork and a 1/2 rack of ribs. All the meats were flavorful and tender, the brisket being our favorite. The pulled pork and ribs were a very close second. The mac and cheese was a cup of creamy, cheesy goodness. The coleslaw had the right amount of zing. The BBQ sauce was a delicious vinegar based sauce. We will absolutely go here again!!

I want to like this place, but after using Smoky Jon’s for catering, I won’t be going back, sorry bout it. I truly don’t know how to rate it, but a couple stars for some semblance of effort.

First, the dude helping me actually wasn’t helpful: he was condescending and asked if I could “handle” carrying all the food (y’know, since I’m a lady) and also said he “wouldn’t help me anyway” (which is… weird?).

Second, this might sound wild but - the amount of coleslaw was INSANE. Like, yes I ordered coleslaw as part of the package, but just know that 15 pounds of it is entirely unnecessary.

Look, I can own that I had no idea how much 15 lbs of coleslaw is. That said, the catering menu offers different “combos” based on how many people are expected to eat - I chose the one that most closely resembled what might be needed.

Question: does anyone need 15 lbs of side dish, especially with the accompanying 15 lbs of pork shoulder and 15 lbs of baked beans? The ratios are way off in their catering menu, and I fully realized what I had gotten into while opening it all up at the party: NO ONE NEEDS THIS MUCH SIDE DISH ACTION. It’s filler. I paid for filler.

Which brings me to the amount of plasticware. Like, my god, really?? You would think that for the money, Smoky Jon’s might invest in supplying wooden or bamboo cutlery to go along with the catered food, and *less of it*. This place gave me so much black plastic cutlery! The amount of plastic knives and serving spoons would have been laughable if it wasn’t so environmentally irresponsible.

TL;DR: too much money for what you get (which is mostly side dish filler), there’s some sexist behavior exhibited by at least one of the dudes running the place, and their desire to use plasticware is almost fetish-like.

Came at the recommendation of some friends. We've been to a number of other BBQ places that fall short of expectations. But Smoky Jon's is not one of those. BBQ sauce is great and meats had great, subtle smoky flavor. We got garlic mashed potatoes, BBQ baked beans, fries, and Mac and cheese as sides. All were good! Service was good and fast

I don't doubt the credentials of "Smokey John": I'm sure he fared plenty well in his BBQ competitions back in the day and I'm sure he, himself, knows how to work a smoker. But if that's the case, then he didn't put that same love and care into what his restaurant serves to the public.

The brisket was tantamount to dog kibble: chopped, dry, and absent any smoke flavor. The ribs were tough and also dry. The sides were "meh". It certainly doesn't measure up to any run-of-the-mill gas station stand in the south; and "best in the universe" is a bold claim to make when the product is about a half-step up from low-end chains like Dickey's.

Ignore the Karens leaving one star reviews. This place is amazing. For $20 I got the brisket sandwich with fries, fried sugar biscuits, and a soda. I left completely stuffed. The sandwich was huge and delicious. I've eaten at many BBQ joints from Nashville, to St. Louis, to OKC, to Dallas, and this place right here in Madison does NOT disappoint.

Only downside is that the dining room is tiny. If it's busy when you go, you may have to eat in your car. Not really a big deal unless you're one of those Karens I mentioned earlier.

I'm so disappointed. This has been my go to ribs place for 30 plus years. I just ordered a full rack with two sides for delivery. With tip, it was $70.00.
The ribs were so tough, I could hardly cut them with a steak knife. There was way more fat and grizzle than meat, and the little edible meat there was, was barely chewable because it was so tough. In addition, the smoke smell and flavor is (and continues to be) overwhelming.

I grew up with Smoky Jon's bbq sauce but had never been there to actually try their food before and WOW was it incredible. The food was ready shortly after the estimated time and when we got there the man at the counter was friendly and provided fast service. When we got home and got to finally dig in everything we had was a hit. The mac & cheese was so cheesy and delicious, ribs were tender with a noticeable smoky flavor, mashed potatoes were flavorful and smooth, corn was well seasoned, and chopped brisket was moist. A fantastic birthday dinner, I highly recommend to anyone who prefers their food with flavor.

We’ve been here many times over the years and this was honestly the worst we’ve ever had here. We ordered two half racks of ribs dinners. The ribs were so tough you could barely pull them apart. The ends were burnt and covered up with sauce to hide it. This is an obvious quality control issue that should’ve been caught way before the customer. On top of it get rid of the credit card receipt asking for a tip. Your order is assembled right in front of you and then handed to you over the counter. I spoke with the former owner years ago at length about his history and operation, that was fantastic and insightful about the bbq industry and what set this place apart thereby justifying all of the awards displayed here. Currently this isn’t it.

I've been loving this Smoky Jon's recipe for over 30 years. The first restaurant on Northport in the Enriques taco joint. The rack of ribs, hands down, is the best!! Fresh fries and BBQ beans is my go and never disappointed!!
I by the jarred sauce and add to other dishes in my cooking. I typically call in my order and take the 20-minute wait time as my drive. The property has a handicapped parking stall but no ramp. You will need to climb 6 big steps. The interior has seating for about 30. I've seen every chair taken and can be loud as all are seating is very close to each other.
Eat here or take home, the best in the Midwest!

Smokey Jon's #1 BBQ is the absolute best barbecue that I have eaten in Wisconsin! It arguably is THE #1 barbecue that I have ever consumed, the staff are very friendly and when you eat in the restaurant it feels like you're eating at home with superb hospitality!

The portions are generous and the prices are very fair, for the quality and quantity of food that you get in a meal or dinner, it's well worth every penny and second to eat!

I don't ideally get excited about BBQ, but I can eat Smokey Jon's every day of the week! They have a large menu with a spread of delectable eats and sauces, which are my favorite!

Found this place by happy accident after leaving the airport.
Ordered the chopped beef sandwich,corn,and mac&cheese. BBQ sauce was sweet and delicious with a mild bite that didn't linger,nor burn on my lips. The mac was cheesy with great texture.
The corn was too spicy for me ( in my defense, I am a wimp when it comes to spicy food). I asked for the creamy coleslaw, which was delicious.

Small little bbq joint with some great food! The staff is super nice and friendly, giving great suggestions on what to try. There wasn't one thing on the menu that we got and didn't like. Smoky Jon's was a place that my husband and I remembered had some of the best bbq when we stopped in Madison a few years ago so we were excited to go back and try it again today finally. The reviews and photos looked great so we took the 1.5 hour drive just for Smoky Jon's. The person who rang us up was very friendly however he gave us the wrong order and when we went right back in they didn't even remember what our order was and had to remake the sides. We didn't even address the missing meat or the fact that one of the meat boxes was labeled as brisket which we didn't order. Very bad experience for a place with such great reviews. This is, by far, our family's favorite local BBQ joint. Nothing fancy. In fact, your meals are served on paper plates with plastic utensils, but the food is out of this world. Best ribs in Madison, period. I typically order the full rack of ribs with a side of corn and the side of fries. Today I had the beef brisket sandwich which was also excellent. Kind of a log cabin decor if you're into that. It's covered with all their awards.

I think the best thing to get here are the ribs! The sandwich was pretty basic. The Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were disappointing. The mashed potatoes had an unpleasant bitterness, and I was hoping for a more generous portion.

Great spot. If you like a bit spicy you must... must get the hot link .. you can add it to a meal or get a plate (2 links) or as a sandwich (1 link).. sides are good too.. Mac.. corn.. mash.. beans.. to name a few. Yes sauce is amazing as well as the rub. And of course all the smoked proteins are on point.

Tried out Smoky Jon’s after some alright BBQ experiences elsewhere around Madison. Overall highly recommend for the barbecue itself, maybe some of the best ribs I’ve ever had, and the prices are so reasonable.

The only issue in my opinion are some of the sides, we weren’t a fan of the coleslaw and pasta salad, or the Mac and cheese. The salads were too mayo heavy for our preferences and the Mac n cheese wasn’t our favorite texture/flavor. Highly encourage you to try for yourself though, and will definitely be interested in trying other sides the next time we order.
