What a fabulous find. We were SO glad we chose this place. We will likely be back for breakfast tomorrow but most DEFINITELY coming back for dinner. Blown away by the deliciousness of the burgers. McKenzie was a stellar server and her co-workers seemed to be doing a phenomenal job as well. I hear this place is looking for a buyer and 1) I wish I had the means to carry on this incredibe legacy, 2) I sincerely BEG the future owners to not change a single thing. I only wish I lived closer, I guess I'll be road-tripping back for truly delicious burgers.

Noteworthy: in my opinion, it would be difficult/cumbersome to dine here with small children since the seating is diner style and not compatible with booster seats or restaurant style high chairs.

Bottom line: don't hesitate, go eat here sooner than later!

All your expectations of an original butter burger will be fulfilled at Solly's Grille; the softest onions and copious amounts of butter makes this one of the best burgers I've had in a while. The meat Pattys are a little small but that's why I saw all the regulars order two burgers at a time. Thicker patties are available but I suggest you go with the original first to get the full experience. Excellent malts are also recommended. Can be crowded but I went about 2pm and had no wait.

Best butter burgers with sautéed onions and cheese. When fries or onion rings are hot, they are the best. Malts and shakes are like from the 50's. Mmmmm Mmmmm good. The short order cook Joe is so professional and attentive. Can't wait for my wife saying we can go again. At least once a month for over 35 years and every chance I got from the early 60's. Took the bus, rode my bike and piled in a car with my buddies.

Best patty melt ever, no condiments needed.

I visited with my sister for Tuesday lunch. I found the place accidently looking for coffee. I was not aware of the history and reputation. The place was packed no two adjacent seats at the counter, we seated ourselves at what was probably the only table off to the side. The furnishings are.. classic, but the place is much cleaner that other old diners. After what was a significant wait a friendly young man took my order. And after another significant wait, I was beginning to question my choice in coming here. Then the food came and I was genuinely surprised at all the 'little things' that came together to form what was the best patty melt I have ever been served. My sister had the mushroom Swiss and I tried one of the mushrooms and it had a really nice but gentle marinade to it, these were definitely not just dumped onto a grill from a can.

If you have time to sit down for a minute and take a break, you will be rewarded here. If you have places to be and people to see and live a life where you never have enough time, this sadly, may not be the place for you.

I can't believe it took me 50 years to get here. The cheeseburger was among the best I've ever had. Wish I had had a malt because that seemed to be very popular. I'm usually not a counter-sitting person, but at Solly's it works and is the only way to go.

The service was incredibly slow, and all three of our sandwiches were slathered in butter. I mean, slathered. It looked like a heavy serving of mayo on a grilled chicken sandwich, but it was butter. I like butter. But not like this. Did not finish my sandwich. (Which wasn’t cheap, by the way.) Atmosphere is cute. Otherwise, one star.

We decided to go there for dinner despite the recent bad reviews about the service. We'll, those reviews were spot on.
We talked in and one of the employees walked passed us and I asked where we could sit. He gestured to a small table off to the side. But, he seemed less than thrilled that we were there.
After about 10 minutes, a woman came up and gave us our menus and said that shed be right back.
The 2 menus that my daughter and I were given have different prices on them for the items.
After waiting for another 25 minutes of no one coming back fo even take out drink order, we left.
We do not recommend Solly's.

What a place! From the outside, it appears to be a bar or normal restaurant, but I was surprised to enter and find a classic diner, complete with lunch counter! Their specialty is butter burgers, and depending on what one you order, they take this to the extreme.

I ordered the big boy (or lad?) burger, and oh man, it was like a parody of a butter burger. It came out dripping wet with rendered butter. It was absolutely delicious. I could feel my cholesterol rising with each bite, but it was so worth it.

They also offer malts and pie, I had the banana malt, great combo with the burger. They don't have pickles for the burgers, oddly.

Fries were just ok, crinkle cut, would prefer matchstick.

Overall I'll definitely be back, but for the not so over the top option!

Was in for breakfast with my son and wife. Waited 45 min to get our food since the cook could only make one order at a time. Food was ok, waited to check out since the guy was out smoking and said he would be in shortly. I never complain if effort is out in. Every other customer was just as upset. Something if majorly wrong with the system at this place. It was awkward and severely understaffed.

Came into town from south of Chicago for a concert and found Solly’s online as a recommend place for burgers. I was really excited to go and take my brother in law. After arriving and sitting down for over 10 minutes, there was no acknowledgment from the staff and the only person that came near us asked if I was Steve for a take out order. Couldn’t even get a word in that we hadn’t been helped… so we left and went to the best spot in town, Sobleman’s…. Just should have went there in the first place…

It is an old house conversion. So as you walk in its front porch, and then you seat on bar wrapped around the cook and wait staff.
Like eating in grandmas living room. The decor is older antic but clean not dusty or just there . Very interesting and a great experience.
This is the original butter burger so you do need to be aware and love buttered burger.
Great crisp fries and the meat is to perfection.
Not to mention the fountain drinks and malts.
It is a smaller place but worth the effort to stop in. It is off major exits so it is not way out. There are plenty of parking spaces.

Always perfect in every way. When you get through the door, grab any open seat(s) at the counter and catch the waitress to order a Solly's cheeseburger (dripping with a pad of butter), french fries, and a chocolate malt. The taste of my childhood. The taste of my dad's childhood. And soon to be the taste of my son's childhood. My grandpa's favorite is still quintessentially Wisconsin and perfect in every way shape and form. Tough with large groups, but doable if you wait.

The outside appearance of Solly's will not prepare you for what's on the inside. The outside looks like grandma's house and the inside is a wonderful atmospheric and nostalgic old time diner setting.
Coming from Sheboygan, butter burgers are made all over town. And those are the only butter burgers we knew growing up. And just to be clear the Culver's butter burger isn't anything like the burger we're talking about. Pleases don't take this wrong I love Culver's and everything from their service, cleanliness and their delicious food is wonderful.

The 3 of us ordered Solly's famous butter burger. Watching the burger be made was mouth watering and conjured up all kinds of taste expectations. The butter on the burger was as thick as the burger itself which I think is needed to make a good butter burger. My dad always said that a good butter burger should have a enough butter on it to run down your arms while eating it. You get that with a Solly's butter burger. But it was kind of a let down when the burger arrived. At first glance the burger on the plate looked like nothing less than a huge mess with a moat of melted butter all around it. The burger didn't stand tall but looked like it had been deliberately smashed/smooshed. Not very appetizing. The bun was very simple and reminds one of those cheap hamburger buns you buy at the store that are neither big enough or suited for a burger. I remember mom only using those buns for Sloppy Joes and never for a burger. I think Solly should think of using a better bun to herald their famous burger.

Again only knowing the Sheboygan butter burger we grew up with there are two immediate differences that make it tough for me to give more than 3 stars for the Solly's butter burger.

(1) The Solly burger is fried and not flame broiled. This is a huge taste difference!

(2) The bun is a bun and not a Kaiser roll any other type of burger bun. Certainly nothing like the world famous Sheboygan hard roll. I think the bun makes a BIG difference in how the burger looks and tastes.

At the end of the day the Solly burger is unique and although very messy a good example of a butter burger. Not the best but good.
I've tried a lot of butter burgers and so called butter burgers over the years and from what we had growing up there's really no comparison. Would I eat a Solly's burger again? Probably not it just didn't have enough to keep me coming back for more. But Solly's was a great experience and happy times. I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Just know ahead of time that if you think you're ordering a Culvers type butter-burger, you're not. You're ordering a very small hamburger swimming in butter. The bun is soggy from the butter. Maybe other people like it that way, but I wasn't expecting it, especially for 8 bucks. Two burgers and onion rings for 25 bucks. The onion rings were very good.

I fell in love with Solly's Grille. 💘

True Wisconsiners know that life is perfect with your cheeseburger topped with butter just before serving. (Who doesn't add cheese in Wisconsin come on we are proud cheeseheads!)

Who cares about the eventual heart attack when you are surfing the clouds in love with your cheeseburger? 😀

Anyway, Solly's was founded in 1936 and to my knowledge remains in the same family. They are the forerunner to today's Koop's (1950) and Culver’s (1984) Restaurants.

Don't forget to start your meal with a signature milkshake - I had Strawberry. There was no skimping on the serving as the glass was full with more available in the mixer cup also brought to you.

Add onion rings to your order and finish the meal off with a piece of pie! I had apple because someone took the last piece of Strawberry Rhubarb just before I ordered it. The nerve of that person whoever they are!

Other than the one table all other seating was at an undulating counter with conversations started with total strangers. In this day and age an odd concept but it worked.

Solly's isn't a big restaurant so plan on waiting if you arrive at a popular meal time. I made it just before the dinner rush.

You won't regret going out of your way for Solly's Grille!

Im giving a mixed review because although the food was good (very buttery and crispy) but the atmosphere is a no-go for me. There are not any standard tables to sit at. You can only sit at the big curved bar which doesn't work for our family- we had our elderly grandma with us and a toddler, so high seats where we can't hear eachother just wont happen. My husband loved the food- but I'll never be back due to the seating situation.

My family and I stopped here on a weekend jaunt away, and my SO was excited to try the butter burger. We arrived and there was a short wait. This 'not-your-average' restaurant is built within a house and it's small, vintage dining space only seats about 25 people, where you sit and watch all of the magic of preparing your food happen. The wait was kind of a mess, as there were multiple families coming in and no one was there to greet or take names in order so folks were seating themselves out of line. We each ordered sandwiches and shared a plate of fries. The fries were hot and fresh, but nothing any different than what other places have. While the other two in my party really enjoyed their well known butter burgers, I opted for a BLT. I was a little worried after placing the order that I overheard the cook asking our waitress what a BLT was, and she had to instruct him on how to make one. Now, while I understand that this place probably makes way more butter burgers than anything else on their menu, a cook should be aware of the other options they offer on their menus. The plate looked nice when it arrived, but I felt the sandwich was drowning in butter and there was very little bacon on it. It was definitely not my favorite meal, but the others really enjoyed their burgers. So in conclusion, if you are feeling the urge to try a greasy, buttery burger, in a local, homely establishment, this would be the place to visit if in Milwaukee!!

I came here on a food journey after seeing Andrew Zimmern talk about the origins of the butter burger. This place is the real deal. My wife(vegetarian) and I walked in, sat at the counter style seating and proceeded to order cheese curds and I ordered the original sollys burger with cheese. I’ve eaten burgers from all over the country and beyond. This burger, while not fancy in any capacity, rivals any burger I’ve ever had. The butter replaces any need for extra condiments. The onions cut through the richness of the burger and butter creating a trifecta of amazing. The cheese curds were the best I’ve had. Go here. Don’t screw up and pass by this place. It will change your life, it changed mine and I’ll be going again soon.

The first time we came here with my older son who was visiting from Tennessee over the Christmas holidays of 2024 was great, so great in fact we wanted to bring my Aunt & Uncle visiting from Florida today. But today was an extreme disappointment. We came in. They sat the two people behind us. They cleared 4 seats. We had five people. They didn’t ask if we would be ok with our small child sitting in our lap, they sat another 3 people behind us. 3 more people came behind them and 3 more were about to leave so of course since they care more about filling empty seats then accommodating waiting customers who have been there a while, we would have never got a seat. I told the lady we were going to leave and she said fine. She didn’t care. I’ll never come here again!

I can't belive I paid $12 for the super cheeseburger. I would love to weigh that patty before it was grilled, it was so small. When I think 1/4 pounder I don't think it should be smaller than a McDonald's regular cheeseburger. Nice atmosphere of a diner setting. However the counter stools were too close for comfort, no elbow room. Our server was great, polite and friendly. From what I observed all the staff was great. As far as the food it was a good burger but I have had better beef burgers. The butter was a bit much, I can see a buttered
bun, but it was swimming in butter. I almost choked on the butter. We paid around $52 for 2 cheeseburgers a patty melt one med fry and 2 sodas. A bit over priced but I am glad we got to try it, however I'm not sure if we will go back.

A charming local place, we came for the butter burgers but were a little taken aback by the quantity of butter on the burger. We made some adjustments for our personal tastes and enjoyed the burger and sweet potato fries. We got a rootbeer float and chocolate milkshake, which was quite a treat, prepared old school style and presented with the mid 20th century trade mark silver metallic "malt" cup.

Solly's has everything a diner should have: seating at the counter, bottomless coffee, vanilla malts and milkshakes, buttery burgers, and greasy spoon style breakfast. I love eating here and have to stop myself from going more often. Some of the best burgers in the city, especially love getting a double on a raft with fried onions, pickles, and mayo.

I had Solly's famous butter burger, which has about 3T or 4T of butter on the burger, and that is what Solly's is known for! But I asked to go light on the butter, which is about 1T of butter.

It just slides down your throat so easily, and the malts are amazing. That's it. There is nothing else to say. Run, drive, or fly to Solly's.

The OG butter burger. Good food, decent service for a lunch counter, but a bit too much on the pricey side for what you get.

Peno burger (normal butter, lettuce, tomato) 5.6/10
Sassy Burger (normal butter) 4.5/10
Vanilla milkshake (8.6/10)
Fries 4.5/10

Note to self. Ask for extra light butter or no butter. A normal amount of butter is a quarter cup of high quality Wisconsin butter that melts into the hot patty leaving your burger marinating in a shallow hot tub of liquid butter. It's just a bit too much butter and made me feel a little nauseous after ingesting the whole thing.
I will still give the other burgers a try on my return visit

Old school counter with stools (no tables and chairs) which was kind of fun. The food was delicious (except the unseasoned crinkle fries) although the “full butter” butter burgers have a comically large amount of butter and we had to remove about 80%. In fairness you can order with half or no butter but as we had never been there before we didn’t know how much butter it would be. The service was not great though. Waitress did not refill our drinks, the ketchup had literally about an ounce in the bottle and we weren’t able to ask for more because she never came back. Had to ask the person cooking for a box and the hostess for the bill. Was a little bit on the expensive side for cheeseburgers but they were very good. I would still go back if the service was better.

Paid full price for an incorrect breakfast.
Ive ordered the same thing each time.
3 eggs over hard, bacon and 2 sides of hashbrown.

Eggs were runny and the hashbrown had onion added to it (I didn't ask for it) I took about 3 bites realized what's wrong, told the server. and told the server what was wrong, and her response was, "That's just how he cooks things," as she passed me the bill.

There wa zero effort to make the meal the items as I requested. I left hungry and unsatisfied which sucks because I enjoyed my fist few times here.

Food is good, love a good butter burger, but it is very overpriced at $8.25 for a relatively small cheeseburger is just too much. Also $3.25 for a (not very) large soda and a dollar to refill? That's movie theater level robbery. Love it, but Kopps down the road is just as good (if less buttery) and I can get a double cheeseburger with much larger patties for $9.25 and a large soda for $1.60.

Finally got the chance to try this place and came in for lunch. It was about 30 past noon. I order the Big Boy burger. It came with kringles fries. Fries came out first. I like kringle fries. Then the Big Boy came out. This was like a premium Big Mac burger. Taste 100% on point. It was juicy and buttery. Definitely one of the better burgers I ate in the Milwaukee area. The only thing was this was a premium burger with a premium price. Almost $20. Good to try at least once. Would I buy it again? Eh?!! Not for the price. But I would try a different burger.

Totalmente recomendable.

Was ok at best. Been here many times and was much better. Fries were not cooked enough. My burgers order was not right. Waited a long time for check. And I guess the economy has hit here like everywhere. Two people had two burgers each with fries and cokes. Total cost $45.48.

First time in Milwaukee and my 1st time trying a Butter Burger. I was super scared at 1st, but after talking to the waitress and she explained how to order, the sizes, the local favorites, and walking me through the menu - I was ready to order. I had the 1/3 lb burger with sweet potato fries. It was absolutely delicious 😋 - honestly and no exaggeration - this was the best burger I have ever tasted. Literally, my mind was blown; something so simple looking would be so darn delicious.

Awesome burger place, with a lot of very cool history! Been in business since 1936. The food was great, the atmosphere was nice, the staff was awesome! My waitress was Mulanda, and she was wonderful! Very nice, and knew a lot of the history. It was certainly a pleasure meeting her! I will definitely be back for the Big Boy burger, the original I had today was great, but the big boy is next on the list!

WORST CUSTOMER CARE ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET. Their coffee cup broke off at the handle and spilled a full cup of hot coffee into my lap. Even my sock had a coffee stain. I was more than an hour away from home, changing clothes was not an option. The waitress refused to give me a refund for the coffee. Now let's face it a free $11 breakfast would not break the bank either. The waitress said she was in charge and refused to do anything for me. Besides a below average meal, the lack of any consideration was even worse.

$40 with tip for a few small burgers with 2 orders of onion rings. I'm very familiar with butter burgers since I'm a lifelong Wisconsinite. This was the worst one I've had at a restaurant. Speedy, friendly service is the only reason I'm giving this a second star.

If you come here skip the burgers and try something else. Way way too much butter. I never thought I would say that.
