Took my wife for her "30th" birthday a few weeks ago. Different but lived up to 5 star dive bar. Going back soon! Food was 5 star, chef cooked everything perfect! Came to the table and asked exactly how we wanted things cooked and delivered! Owner was great, what a outgoing guy. Shared a little bourbon treat with me "local bourbon ". Didn't know we had a local bourbon distillery that good. I don't leave reviews often but when you are thinking about a place from weeks ago, you should. Thank you for the experience. Will be back. Outstanding!

Looks like a real dive from the outside but don't let it scare you away. It is a real gem inside. The shrimp and grits were crazy good and the crab cake was very tasty. Service was great. Attentive server. The chef is professionally trained and it shows in the food and presentation. Worth the price.

We loved our time here as we were passing through! Kay won was great- I know I probably butchered that again. He was busy and still checked in often, helped with the cooking of our food, and made/served our drinks. I love how they are transparent about their service fees when they give you the check as well. Delicious food- loved the scallops! Highly recommend!

We had a truly special experience at Son of Skaliwags while celebrating our wedding anniversary. We stopped in on a Tuesday evening and were warmly greeted and seated by Chef Kavon, who also took the time to walk us through the menu and specials. Although we’ve dined here several times before, it had been about a year and a half since our last visit, so we were really looking forward to this meal.
We started with hand-muddled Old Fashioneds crafted by Kavon himself—excellent as always—and snacked on the crispy shrimp appetizer. For dinner, I had the sea bass, and my wife enjoyed the chef’s special: blackened grouper served with a crab cake and grits. The seating arrangement offers a great view of the kitchen, and we loved watching Kavon passionately prepare not only our dishes but those for other guests as well.
The portions were sizeable, the presentation was beautiful, and the flavors were outstanding. The seafood is flown in fresh and prepared with care—truly some of the best you’ll find.
To top off an already memorable evening, we were the last guests in the restaurant when we learned that a couple from Tennessee had covered our entire bill, including gratuity. We were absolutely blown away by their kindness. If you happen to be reading this—thank you very much! Your generosity made our night incredibly special.
If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking out Son of Skaliwags. It's a hidden gem with exceptional food, a welcoming atmosphere, and a chef who truly cares about the experience.

Interesting experience at Son of Skaliwags, which was highly recommended to us. We made a reservation for 6pm, but that was worthless as we were not seated until 6:40. The atmosphere was good, like a dive bar with upscale food choices. Once seated, it took forever for someone to ask for our drink order, then even longer to get someone to take our food order. The blackened grouper was ok at best, probably not a good idea to order an ocean fish in Wisconsin. The bill came and there was a 22.5% tip pre-added to the order, which was crazy based on the bad service. Maybe it was just an off night for the place, but definitely not worth the drive to go there again.

My friends and I had an amazing experience on Sunday evening. We had a reservation for 5pm & from the moment we walked in we were greeted with friendly staff and sat promptly.
We all enjoyed a few appetizers to share and ordered our own entree. My favorite part was that our server was fully involved in the experience from seating us, to taking our order, and assisting with the preparation of our meals. He was timely, knowledgeable, and entertaining… definitely made the experience more enjoyable! We will be back soon.

This place will give you such an unsuspecting experience; especially when viewing the venue from the street. When you walk inside, it’s totally different than you’d expect…
The interior is eclectic, but cozy. The staff are 10/10. You’ll notice your server taking your order, then assisting with the preparation of your order in the kitchen. This hands-on experience is very evident in how they are able to articulate the menu and make educated recommendations.
This place is the epitome of hidden gem! You won’t find better food in this area! A must try!

Choice selections of the freshest seafood like sea bass, grouper, giant scallops, and the like. They pride themselves in their dive bar ambiance which is great, but the seafood is top end and prepared to perfection. Dishes are served with modest seasoning, not smothered in sauces, making the flavor of the seafood the main attraction. You can't go wrong with any choice on the menu. Marshall and his team take care of guests in a personal way which makes the entire experience a real treat.

This was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I have had EVER. What a treat to find such a gem in a very small town in Northern Wisconsin. The experience was exactly as framed - a five star dive bar. The food was excellent, especially the She Crab Bisque (best seafood bisque ever?). When I could not decide between the grouper and filet, the owner/Exec chef (Marshall) said, I got you. And what comes out but my own surf n turf (not on the menu). (Did I mention the cocktails and dessert were also very tasty?) Granted, it is still a dive bar at its heart so if you are looking for white table cloth kind of experience, this is not the place for you. But if you want to feel like you are a guest at a big dinner party where you can make friends with the host and people at the bar next to you (they also have a few tables), then this is the place for you. I will road trip to Algoma again if I ever find myself within striking distance again just so I can come back to Son of Scalawags. Go early as the place is tiny and very popular with the locals. You should also expect to spend some quality time here. Go for the experience, don’t be rushed, and be patient if they are packed as they only have a few staff. And go now before it gets “discovered” and becomes a destination dining experience.

Almost afraid to tell everyone how GREAT this place is. They are sold out most of the time so make a reservation! You will get to know other guests as it's communal seating but don't let that stop you!
Everyone is entertaining from the owners to the chef. We were fascinated watching him put out food like a champ! You can see the grill from the bar, it's awe inspiring!!
The menu is on a chalkboard presumably because it changes frequently. The seafood is fresh fresh fresh! We dined on a Saturday and they were already out of oysters which were delivered on Friday. They must be good!! We will definitely be back!

Highest possible recommendation for Marshall and team. What a gem, and a perfect fit for this quiet, slightly rough-hewn town on Door County's eastern shore. It's a chef-owned and run neo-Supper Club with a southern take on traditional hearty Wisconsin fare. Oh - and really good mixed drinks. If 'I Like Gin' is among the specials, get one. No, get two.

It's super small inside with additional seating outdoors as well. Kavon was super friendly and nice. It was probably the most expensive meal I've had in the area but also the best. My kids split a perfectly cooked filet. The she crab bisque was excellent! Drinks were delicious, too. Don't skip the dessert, wow! The lemon blueberry cake was SO good! 🤤 Zero complaints from anyone in our group. Yum!!

Tonight, we stopped there on a whim and I got to watch magic. I watched a human manage a bar, mixed drinks, and prepare food that was out of this world with the flow of a lava lamp. I am absolutely still in awe as a person who’s been involved in the service industry on and off for 30 years. A bartender by themselves would’ve been stressed, but he pulled that off and then dropped us two of the most amazing servings of food I’ve had in years, with a packed bar.

Best place to eat north of Green Bay hands down!! We actually live in Door County and will drive over and hour south to Algoma just to eat here and support two very kind and hard working young men! It was a Michelin dining experience. We loved all of it, including the romaine app! Very eclectic and Chef Marshall's outstanding menu selections are worth getting a photo of the menu board.
Anyone who didn't enjoy this experience isn't accustomed to Chef experiences or paying for top shelf dining. This has that linen table cloth feel but inside a wonderfully appointed "dive" bar.
We sang "Happy Birthday" twice for strangers and it gave a Magical feel to our top shelf experience.

Wow.... best fish fry I've ever had, and that is a mouthful. Fried grouper amazing. Its definitely a small place but so worth it. Marshall, owner/ chef, this guy can cook. All extremely fresh ingredients and very friendly staff!
Making an edit, FFF grouper meal was lacking, its supposed to feed 2 people and was not enough for 1 person. Really liked this place but the owner is obviously trying to cut costs! Shame, our club spent a lot of money there and we all were very disappointed. Marshall get back to what's good man and give your customers what's advertised and expected or you will not survive.

Service was superb, butttt the price point is unacceptable. 22% gratuity and also a CC fee. 105 dollars for 1 drink, an appetizer, a bowl of bisque and shrimp n grits that was slopped together. Barely tasted grits. And dessert. Which chef did throw us an extra piece. We took that to go. Unfortunately this place has a lot of potential but we will not be back.

If you visit Algoma without eating at Son of Skaliwags, you’ve missed the best thing Algoma has to offer. I was looking forward to eating there for 1100 miles, and they did NOT disappoint! It was late, and we had to do takeout. We had the Ahi Tuna with Seaweed Poke’ and She Crab Bisque - Oh My Gosh - freaking amazing!!! I just wish we would have had more time in Algoma so that I would have had time to try everything on the menu! Outstanding service - above and beyond Midwest hospitality, kindness, and friendliness!! If we ever make the 1100 mile trip to the Algoma and Door County area, we WILL stay several days so that we can try everything on the Son of Skaliwags menu!

One of the finest experiences you'll have in years! The environment is comfortably unique. The staff treats you like family! The food, OMG you will be in awe of the 5 star dishes they have to offer! Seafood, flying in fresh daily. The beef, mouth watering, cooked exactly to order. Side dishes are so flavorful! I was grateful for the good food but be aware it's not cheap. We had 2 adults and 2 kids dine there and the bill was $253 bucks before tip. Here's is what we ordered. 2 appetizers (crispy shrimp and spicy tuna) 4 entree's (crab cakes, see bass, shrimp and grits, lobster ravioli). And two shirley temples (soda and cherry syrup.) They tacked on a 22% "service charge". And had a section on the bill where you could include a tip on top of that. I questioned them about the charge and they explained that it was written out on the menu. The problem is that we were never given a menu. I don't have an issue with a service charge but at 22% don't ask me for a tip on top of that. I honestly didn't think I'd be spending 253 bucks at a bar for dinner in Algoma Wi. I'm only writing this review so people know what they are in store for before they agree to spending this kind of money.

We're local and would stop in every day if budget allowed. I think you either get what Chef has done here or you don't.. there isn't really a middle ground. It lives up to it's billing of a Five Star Dive Bar. What you WILL get is a world-class meal and service in a place that isn't pretentious or fussy. We think that is awesome. We've never had anything on the menu that we didn't think was outstanding and the service is fantastic. The wait can sometimes be long, so we probably go more in the off season or lower traffic days, but we are never disappointed. SoS is not for everyone, and if it isn't for you, just leave it at that. No reason to disparage the staff, the owner, the food, or the atmosphere with a bad review... these are hard-working families that are doing a great job delivering on their vision. Oh.... and the house margarita.. wow!

Our third visit here. We travel from Fond du Lac (4 hours round trip!) and we’re never disappointed. Marshall has cooked for us when we didn’t know enough not ask for the chef’s trip. Food was amazing! Came back for chef’s trio and Kavon cooked for us. Again, simply amazing. Tonight we came in with a reservation and sat at the top of the bar because we love to watch Chef cook. Chef Trio was all seafood tonight. Simply incredible. Not enough positive words to say about this meal. Busy night, broken dishwasher, and all that. Kavon never let the smile slip from his face. The crispy shrimp, the key lime pie and the amazing chefs make this place worth driving 4 hours to visit as often as possible. PS. Kudos to Kaprice for his role in keeping the dishes rolling along. We appreciate the fun conversation!

This emperor has no clothes. We asked about drinks. They didn't know what they had! The selection seemed limited. We finally ordered rum and coke and rum and tonic. The one with coke was acceptable, but the one with tonic was not drinkable.
Ordered appetizers, which were largely flavorless. Grilled romaine lettuce with mystery meat, and crab fritters.
At that point we asked for a check. 22% service charge and 3 % processing fee, though I paid cash. I deducted that from my cash payment so sue me.

The only downside in my opinion was price. The 4 of us ate well, I think 5 total cocktails and the appetizers and entree tallied up to a $500 bill (they include tip and swipe fee in bill) My friend and I got 1 each of the tomahawk 320z ribeye at $100 a piece. Again the cook made it perfect at medium rare and was phenomenal but I can also get phenomenal 16oz ribeyes with mashed potatoes and greens for $25 elsewhere. We don't regret going at all! Glad we did! Probably can't afford many trips but we ate like kings and queens! Highly highly recommend!

Do not order grilled romaine salad as you will get wilted, old leaf lettuce soaked in bacon fat. The beans were good however, as was the feta. Whoop de doo. When told that they bait 'n' switched, waitress offered no Apology, did not tell cook, or if she did, he offered no apology either. Scalewags is a good name for this place.

My partner took me here to celebrate a late birthday dinner and did this place deliver! The entire experience was above and beyond! While the outside appearance aims to say “dive bar”, the inside and team running this ship ensure you are provided a memorable dining experience. We both left wanting to get our next reservation set for the future!

Food and service were amazing. Seating is extremely limited.; only three small tables and seating at the bar. We sat at the bar very close to the door during the winter. Every time the door opened, we were hit with cold air. That was the only downside. The food and service were worth it though.

By far the best food we have had! This Five Star Dive Bar will not disappoint. We went on a Sunday night so it wasn't busy which was perfect and we were able to talk to all the staff including the chef. Very friendly and welcoming.
The food: We had the Cajun scallops with a dipping sauce for the App. Then New Orleans Pasta and Grouper and Crab Cake for our main meals. Incredible food and left very full. Portions were perfect for the price.

Gourmet food in a dive bar setting! The sea bass was the best I've ever had. They did sell out of a few dishes while we were there on a busy Saturday, FYI if you go expecting a certain dish. The filet looked amazing and I want to come back to try this sometime. Save room for dessert at the end - if you're lucky enough to get key lime pie, it's creamy and not too tart and worth the calories. We also had top notch service from Alexa the moment we walked in!

Went on a Saturday night when they first opened. Its been about 10 years since last time there. Son is now the chef, but wasn't there that night. Super friendly staff. Very limited seating. Menu on the chalk board. Not all had prices listed. We got the crispy shrimp appetizer ($18) which was amazing. Husband got a steak ($42), which he was very pleased with. I ordered lobster ravioli (price not listed on the board). It was very tasty, but quantity was not as expected for the price ($35). Was hoping to have leftovers, but only got 6 raviolis, which was very disappointing. It did come with a slice of flat bread and a couple asparagus spears. Felt that it should have been an appetizer - not an entree.

Our party of 2 arrived at 5pm, simultaneously with another party of 4. Both parties were eventually seated. There were 6 people at the bar, and no one entered or left after we came in. Staff that I could see consisted of one female bartender and one waiter. Fast forward 15-20 minutes- the other party had received their drinks. Staff had not acknowledged we were present, even though the two tables are 3 feet apart. At this point we decided to leave, and went on to have a great experience at a bistro one block away. The food may or may not be great- I'll never know, and don't plan on going back. Maybe you'll get lucky here, but I'd suggest having a back up plan.

Five star dive bar! Super unique vibe for an upscale restaurant. We went to celebrate my dad’s 70th birthday and had a blast. The entire staff was great and the food was great.
Some of our favorites:

- scallops
- blueberry dessert (“fancy pancake”)
Sitting at a bar is unique for such a nice restaurant, but it really makes for a fun experience. You get to see the entire process unfold in front of you, and you can interact with the staff much more than normal.

Wow. What a place.
Description on the website is spot on- dive bar with great food, or something on those lines.
The food is not just great, it's amazing. Not the type of amazing that you would get in normal bar food, this place is elevated. All staff replying thank you chef, commenting 'on your left chef' as they walk by. 75% of the bar is a typical Wisconsin bar, but it's what happens in the remaining 25% that is mind blowing.
Service is very good, and staff is friendly. I just can't help but repeat how surprised we were even though we kind of knew what to expect from the website.
If you are in the area and are thinking about it, you have to stop. Reservations are not really taken, but can be added to a list on busier nights I believe. It was just my wife and I so we sat at the bar right behind the kitchen (recommended).

What a special place! Seems like everyone who comes here knows chef Marshall and what a great chef he is. Our experience was Amazing! We go to fine dining almost every very where we go. We have been to Gordon Ramsay’s and Morimoto’s restaurants, and Son of Skaliwag was just as good if not better. Service was great, drinks were made perfect and the Key Lime Pie was phenomenal! Recommended and would give another Star!

This was our first and much-anticipated visit to Son of Skaliwags in Algoma, WI, and we couldn’t have been more disappointed. Our group of four had reservations this past Saturday at 430, and we were seated promptly. Our server, Melissa, was so disengaged she failed to explain how the menu was only on the board. We assumed they were the daily specials and not the full menu. When we asked for menus, she snapped at us as if we should have known how this restaurant/bar operated. We ordered one round of drinks (4) and, shortly after that, ordered our food. We sipped our first drinks for almost 40 minutes before asking Melissa nicely for an update on our food, which was met with complete disgust and disrespect. We asked one question in 40 minutes, and she responded with, “do you see what we have to work with, do you want good quality and you aren’t the most important people here.” We were appalled at her tone and arrogance when we only wanted a timeframe to order an appetizer. We did order an appetizer, but it didn’t show up until our food arrived about 30 minutes later. Marshall brought our food out, chastised us for being mean to his staff (which was not true), and accused us of being drunk (also not true, we each had one drink). The food was way overpriced for the quality (a 60-dollar prime steak should not be rubbery). The steaks we had were not prime or quality. After this subpar meal, we had to ask Melissa three times for to-go boxes; when they arrived, Marshall arrogantly tossed them on the table. Wow! No professionalism by the owner of the establishment! We have dined at many 5-star restaurants, and this is not 5-star, and yes, it is the dive that is stated on its website!
We have never encountered a server with such disrespect, a poor attitude, and a lousy work ethic. Furthermore, the owner’s behavior while protecting such a horrible employee is extremely disgruntling. Think again before dining here!

We got there at opening (4:30) only to get the last table. By 5, our drinks were served and the menu was described IN DETAIL by the owner Marshall. Service was impeccable and the food came out with exceptional timing. I cannot imagine better service and quality of food from the nicest places we have been. I cannot wait to return but will do so with a reservation based on popularity and small seating space. This sour beer was one of the best I have found.

A definite gem in Algoma, this place is an unassuming dive with delicious, creative food. The restaurant allowed us to eat outside even though they were really busy and didn’t have service outdoors at the moment. We really appreciated that since we had our dog with us. The chef brought everything out and was super kind. The shrimp appetizer with the aioli and duck sauce was phenomenal. The only reason I’m giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is the grouper dish was pretty small for $34 as shown in my photos (I had a piece of the fish and chips on my plate from my companion’s plate). The shrimp appetizer, while delicious, included 4 shrimp at $18. Everything is priced a bit too high for the area and portion sizes.

We stopped in for dinner after reading the fabulous reviews of this restaurant. The food was delicious, but not quite what I expected for a $120 meal for two. Taste - perfect! However, I ordered my Filet medium rare and it came almost well done. A young man was the chef for the night, and I believe it was the owners son. I absolutely understand teaching someone how to cook. I am not the type of person to send a steak back unless it was awful. The steak was moist, tender and delicious, just not medium rare, there was red or pink to be seen. In addition, the asparagus was actually cold and the grits were “maybe warm”. My husband had the scallops and he said they were fabulous, tender, no sand and cooked to perfection. His asparagus and grits were also cold. I don’t know if it was an off night because Monday’s are slow, but I was disappointed that the steak was not what I ordered. I will give them the benefit of a doubt and think that maybe he thought I said medium well instead of medium rare. So, just make sure they know how you want your steak prepared.

Dropped in for a Saturday lunch and again was totally blown away by the grouper plate complete with fries, tasty garnish and pita bread. The intimate and cozy atmosphere combined with excellent food is what makes this dining experienced one should put on the bucket list. It's dinner theatre at its best where you can see your food being prepared, admire the making of old fashions, and chat with the chef.
