The historic building dates back to the early 1920’s as an establishment where folks liked to come and mingle.The service is great and the food is superb! Spats was built in 1922 offering the ultimate in local fare and flare. Our menu boasts the most delicious food sourced from local family businesses such as Manderfields Family Bakery, Acoca Coffee, Stone Arch Brewery, Dalla Tara Pasta, and Jacobs Meat Market. Many of our regular customers as well as first timers have said, “It feels like Cheers when you walk in here, everyone is so friendly.” That’s because Nick and Bri are truly happy to have you here. “We know you have many options on where to dine and drink in the Fox Valley and when you choose us we are going to treat you like family!

I have been to Spats in the past and have had no issues. We went in tonight to grab some food but we had been sitting there for 15 minutes after being sat and nobody had even come to get our drink and food order and we even asked the waitress to see if we could get somebody and we ended up just walking out. We were disappointed in the service to say the least.

Our service group needed a place to host a small event, and after asking around on Facebook, I was connected to Nick at Spats through a family friend. Even with only about a month’s notice, he was more than accommodating.
We had a group of fewer than 20 people, some gluten-free needs, and a modest budget. I shared that with Nick, and he suggested a buffet with three protein options, a starch, a vegetable, soup or salad, and dessert. The price was very reasonable, and the variety worked out perfectly.
When we arrived, we were taken to a private space that fit our group just right. Kerry, Heather, and Taylor were fantastic! Attentive with drinks, clearing plates, and making sure everything ran smoothly. The food was outstanding: marsala chicken, beef tips, and salmon were all a hit. I had worried about running out, but Nick planned it perfectly. Everything was hot, fresh, and flavorful.
Nick stopped by often to check on us, which meant a lot. The staff was gracious, the space was comfortable and clean, and the whole experience was excellent. If you’re looking for a spot for an event, catering, or even just a family dinner, I highly recommend Spats. We’ll definitely be back.

My date and I really enjoyed our experience! Roasted Brussels were great, I love how they didn't over-do any sauce, so they were light and crispy. My steak salad won popular vote at the table. Yum.

This was our first visit to Spats and the 'Spatio'. I opted for the Walleye fish and my dinner companion chose the gnocchi special of the day. Both were good. We were there early - and in August - so not a lot of takers for the patio but we enjoyed it. Choose your seat out there wisely though because there's an exhaust fan from the kitchen that can be a little annoying/loud.

Stopped in while visiting from Chicago and was blown away by the meal! Creative specials, delicious brussels sprouts and a nice selection of drinks. You can tell that they take pride in the meals they curate and the overall experience for guests. Looking forward to stopping back in the next time I’m in Appleton!

My sister used to live in the area and recommended Spats to us - we were traveling through on our way to visit my parents. My husband and I both ordered the breaded haddock and shared an order of cheese curds and the strawberry shortcake. He also ordered the clam chowder. Now, my honey is a super foodie. He keeps a list of his favorite foods on this list and this list is coveted by many of his business associates! Both the clam chowder and the strawberry shortcake made his list! The haddock was so good I took a couple of pieces home with me. The food was great! Our server, Karen, was very attentive, but not overly so and very pleasant. The busser was Johnny on the spot. Just a great experience!

I decided to treat myself to dinner on st Patrick’s day. I chose a Reuben for takeout from here. I was so looking forward to it and was super disappointed. There was barely any meat on the sandwich. It didn’t even cover the bread. Eating out is expensive so this was suppose to be a treat for me. I expected something better ,at least meat in every bite.

We really wanted to like this place, but we won't be coming back.
We both ordered the 3-course brunch, and the menu makes it out that you receive both doughnut holes and a mimosa as the first course, with a choice of either eggs benedict or a 3-cheese omelet for second and a dessert for third.
We received our mimosas, and when our second courses were served, we were told that it was either a mimosa or a doughnut hole. Okay, fine, the menu wasn't clear on that, but whatever.
My three-cheese omelet had no cheese in it, and when I flagged our server down, I was told that the cheese is mixed into the eggs, which I did not taste at all. She was quick to get me another one (with cheese both inside and on top).
After the 3-bite check-in, we only saw our server once. We got the desserts to-go, and then we sat for around 25-30 minutes afterward trying to catch her for the check. Only after loudly asking for her attention were we able to pay.
Overall, the food was tasty, but the service really ruined it for us.
I hate to be "that guy", but I've never been so frustrated with restaurant service that I had to go sit in the car towards the end while my spouse finishes up before.

Very dim and waitresses keep wondering to the front of house not doing much and the food was served cold and over priced. Literally recommend for the same price go elsewhere only good part was the bus person was on top of there game and refilled water even though it was warm off the tap.

This was a hidden gem. There are signs that this is a scratch kitchen and it was well worth the wait, which was not long. The atmosphere was very relaxed. We decided to try this restaurant as part of Restaurant Week and agree that we've found our breakfast spot from now on.

The fish fry was bland. There was no seasoning. The tartar sauce had no flavor. There is no salad bar. The drinks were extremely tiny and full price. The heat wasn’t on so our food got cold while we were eating. The total was over $100 for two fish dinners and 4 single small drinks.

Spats is truly a place where everybody knows your name. The servers were very friendly, especially Brittney. She was very attentive and engaging. The restaurant lighting is on the dimmer side of things. For me, it made it more relaxing and I instantly went into chill mode. Spats is well worth the visit.
Steak Dianne- The tenderloin medallions were seasoned very good. I would’ve enjoyed this dish even more, if the meat was of a better quality. But the brandy mushroom sauce was out of this world.
Spats Burger- Simple burger that consisted of L.T.O, and Bacon. With a 1000 Island sauce. What stood out the most about this burger, was the fact the hamburger was seasoned.
Bang Bang Shrimp- really good tasting dish, just the right amount of Thai chili sauce. The side addition of the slaw was the perfect complement

We met the owners during Mac and Cheese fest this year and their food was incredible. They had given us the incorrect order and after a week of calling, they tried to call me a liar. Not sure how that is possible when a person has the receipt and the bank receipt. I now understand why they do not get much business and I was told by several people this week that they also had horrible customer service there also. Would not recommend whatsoever.

We went out for a day late Valentine's dinner on 2/15 and were excited to still be able to order from the Valentine's menu. Living in Appleton almost 20 years this was my first time here and I'm mad I didn't get there sooner! Walked into an intimate bar setting with a nice size bar and booth seating with tables in the back and a separate side room where the bathroom is located. The service was great, were seated right away and shortly after our drinks were ordered. I had a fantastic old fashioned and my wife had a cranberry spritzer both with great flavor and hand crafted. We ordered appetizers right away and had some of the best crab cakes I've eaten and the Brussels sprouts topped with nuts, cheese, bacon and balsamic. We shared everything and it was enough that we had to take a box home with our entrees- miso glaze salmon with veggies and rice and I had the hot brown with fries which were both well flavored, cooked perfectly and came out quickly. Had to get the dessert feature for Valentine's Day- a strawberry chocolate mousse. Price was less than we intended to spend, even with steak options in the $35+ price point, the quality and local ingredients make it well worth it! The server checked back regularly but not over bearing, overall a fantastic restaurant for any occasion! Looking forward to going back soon.

My wife and I ate here for the 1st time in a while a month ago. Very impressed with the new owners menu. Went back with another couple on Saturday and again, it was very good over. Heard very good things about Spats before going my first time. We were able to make a reservation for my family (7 and a toddler). They accommodated us and everything went very smoothly. Ordered cheese curds and Brussel sprouts as appetizers. The curds were fantastic and they came with a sauce that I’ve never had before but it was like a ranch/1000 island sauce. Mmmmmmm gooooddd. Brussel sprouts were like no other. 10/10
My main course I had the salmon. Holy Toledo. 20/10.
Bathroom was clean as a whistle.

Had dinner with my fiancé and thought we would give this a whirl with the new owners. Was very disappointed and dissatisfied. First we could not find a parking spot so we had to park across the street in the parking lot. Service was subpar and when we sat down we ordered drinks but the drinks were very diluted and overly priced. The dinner portions were extremely smaller than the portions from previous owner and Priced high for what you got. My husband order steak and asked for it medium but came out nearly well done. Would not go back nor would I recommend.

A couple of weeks ago, I wanted to take my friends out for a nice dinner. We had reservations, which they said they do not normally do.
Feeling confident we headed off expecting a nice evening.
We were seated between the kitchen and the restroom points of access, I mean RIGHT UP AGAINST THE WALL BETWEEN THEM.
The odor of the restroom was ever present during the meal. This was the most embarrassing meal I have ever had with friends.
I would avoid this place as it appears they have little respect for their customers and a VERY CASUAL approach to cleaning.

I stopped here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The food was very good, I especially liked the brussel sprout appetizer. I would say the service was, frantic? They had one poor woman working the Friday rush. She truly did her best serving the bar, dining room and patio but she just couldn't keep up! Nor should she have to! Management needs to staff better or help serve themselves if staffing is that bad.

I've love eating here with family and friends, but today was the first time using their catering option. The food was fantastic and service was great (walked the delivery through our building to the conference room where our group was stationed not just dropping at the front desk like other caterers we've used in the past). We often bring in customers in to visit our facility from out of town and we will happily choose Spats again to be able to offer our customers a higher quality meal than a fast food chain they probably have back home. Nick mentioned that they're open to providing a custom catering menu as well, not just what is listed on the site (like a catered sushi buffet). I will definitely be choosing them again to cater an event for not only GOOD food but to also bring a variety to our staff/customers.

Came in on a Saturday Night, hostess was super friendly. Wait was not too bad and they let us order a drink to stand in the renter with while we waited since the bar was completely full.
The only disappointment was the vegetarian options. I fact there is ONE cheeky menu item called “Do you have any vegetarian options” and by no surprise it’s noodles. How unoriginal of a menu to feature noodles and veg as THE one veg option. IMO a good chef can be more creative with vegetables than that and it’s either an outright refusal or lack of imagination that leads to these types of dishes on otherwise very interesting menus. Okay, end rant.
The service was top notch. Cheese curds for an appetizer were as expected and came with a nice house made sauce for dipping.
Entrees were the Croque Madame with a side of house fries and a Shrimp Salad (no shrimp sub Brussels sprouts please). To be fair, and slightly redeem from my veg rant earlier, the waitress said “okay no problem we’ll figure it out.” They gave me a full side of the Brussels sprouts from the starter menu, no charge, instead of the shrimp. I got my greens/protein and was perfectly content with the swap!
Plating of the salad was great in particular, arranged beautifully on a dish larger than the pile of vegetables so there was room to work with! Something many restaurants miss is how messy and hard their salads are to eat because they pile it high with KO wiggle room. Dressing on the side is also always appreciated!
Sandwich was a good interpretation of the dish, house fries were very good. Portion sizes made sense with both price and per meal.
Beer, wine and cocktail list is not extensive but covers each category fully. A full bar is easy to order anything from anyways, if there is not something specific that inspires.
Atmosphere is cozy and as it was busy, loud. But plexiglass between each booth does a world of difference for noise control.
Other than leaving us wanting for a few more creative dishes for the veg/vegans - there is nothing to complain about here.

The food was excellent, I ordered soup of the day, Bang Bang shrimp, and the meatballs. Service was friendly ( but fast ) Everything came too quickly to enjoy as individually as it definitely deserves. That is the only reason I gave 4 stars on service, but I will be making the 120-mile trip to visit again, so well worth it to share this gem with everyone I know

Don’t let the cozy Wisconsin bar & grill atmosphere fool you. Spat’s does have the usual comforts of fish fries and old fashioneds, but the new owners have elevated the menu with excellent new American fare and craft cocktails. Not to mention, they make the best brussels sprouts I’ve had anywhere.

Pleasantly surprised by Spats! It looks a little old school inside, but the food was soooo good. And I loved the ample parking. Highly recommend.
Pros: THE Meatballs, Truffle Fries, quick seating, easy parking
Cons: the only thing I can even think of was that my drink was nothing special (Pear Fizzle) - still good though!

My wife and I celebrated our first date anniversary last night of 11 years at Spats. It was a great dinner with an appetizer that was to die for. Brussel sprouts with bacon. Yummy. Then a short walk to the PAC for a great musical.

Started off the evening with a dirty martini followed by their crab cake appetizer and perch dinner with smashed baby red potatoes. Very pleased with everything including great service. The dirty martini was delicious, stiff, and very reasonable at $5.50. The crab cakes were unbelievable, most tender to overcook this dish, but these were cooked spot on with a generous portion of real crab and a handmade remoulade that was delectable. Their smashed baby reds were also delicious, tender on the inside without being overcooked, with crispy skin which had been seasoned well with course salt, fresh ground pepper, and garlic infused olive oil. Topped everything off with a dessert cocktail, the Tom and Jerry. Overall excellent experience.

Been there the 3 past Fridays for bluegill and haddock and loved it. The lobster bisque is the best I've had yet. The smashed red potatoes are also excellent. Brie, the bartender is both friendly and talented. Dirty martini and Manhattan both top notch. Overall a wonderful experience that I will be frequently returning back to.

We got dinner at Spats tonight and were very impressed! We walked in and were met with a very friendly hostess who seated us right away. Our server, whose name I cannot remember, had only been there for a couple of days was extremely friendly and acted like she had worked there for years.
We ordered a couple (ok, several) Brandy Sours and they were perfect and quick to get to our table. Nice touch with the pickled Brussels sprouts! Within only a couple of minutes our clam chowder and lobster bisque were brought to our table and both were excellent! My 9 year old daughter wanted to get another bowl of the clam chowder it was so good.
The seafood platter and bluegill were both spot on. Light, flaky, hot, and not at all greasy.
I also was very impressed at how reasonable the prices were.
To the whole Spats crew: you guys nailed it tonight. Keep up the good work. You guys have an awesome operation going on.

Whelp, we had to go back to Spats to try some other items. Started out with that amazing bang bang shrimp again! Hubby had the steak Diane which was really really awesome! Those round potatoes were melt in your mouth! The steak was also very good with that very flavorful gravy. I opted for the Bacon cheeseburger with truffle fries. Food seems to be very consistent and amazing! The last time we had the mushroom Swiss burger which was also amazing. Can’t wait to go back again!

The menu is very limited now.
The friend we were with fell on the step going to the upper level of the Spatio when we were arriving. Should be yellow taped or caution ⚠️ so Guests know it's there. The staff was very helpful in assisting with getting her up in a chair and got her ice for her bleeding knees.
Your response to my review stated that caution tape had been installed on that step up on the Spatio. We'll I've been there and guess what ???? No caution tape appears in that area of the Spatio. You're making it look good on your response and nothing was actually done.

Overpriced, hamburger was just a basic SMALL hamburger, order their smashed red potatoes,they came so burned, they were black and crispy, I asked for new ones, they came in quarters yellow potatoes, literally dripping in grease. Entries all started at $21.99, not a good experience.

One of our steaks was very undercooked. Asked for medium and received it so rare it was purple. He only ate one bite. Weren't checked on once during our dinner except to ask us if we wanted boxes at the very end. We told her about the steak being really underdone and all she said was to take it home and microwave it to cook it more. I was pretty shocked by that. Not even an apology. Will not be coming back.

Coming in from out of town, we just wanted Perch before we left. Oh my word did Spats deliver! We had the double order of perch, intending to share, and it was a TON of food. Cheese curds, a side salad and a couple beers.... you can NOT go wrong with this place! Local customers were amazingly friendly, like all Wisconsinites. Try the Spats fries! And the ranch! Try everything! Amazing staff, phenomenal food! Thank you Amanda, Bree and Nick! We'll definitely be back!

Used to love Spats it's gone down hill so I'm downgrading my review. Ordered carryout tonight and the coleslaw was rancid and expired. My partner started vomiting when he tasted it. Called to warn them to not serve others and was offered nothing by the manager. Horrible customer service and I wouldn't trust their food handling there. Beware of this place.

Stopped in for a beverage and some dinner. Nice folks with good service; chill atmosphere and a patio with a decent number of tables and music. Love that they carry local brews too.
The beverages were great and fillet was delicious. Perfectly cooked asparagus. The truffle fries were excellent and the cheese curds were spot on. The scallops on the other hand, were gritty, charred, and way over salted. In addition, the spices way over shadowed any nuances that one might appreciate from the seafood. It simply wasn't very good. She got them, took two bites and said no way, passing them to me. Honestly, I tried to get through them and am pretty dedicated to finishing everything, but I couldn't do it, it simply wasn't appetizing. To close, our server was great; he was on point but not overbearing and he was very friendly.
Thanks for the experience; we'll be back--we'll just skip the scallop next time.
Follow up after owner response: we were enjoying the evening and didn't want to deal with the hassle of talking to a manager, etc, etc, so chose not to request a refund. Besides, we did push through quite a bit of it, as indexed by the photo. If you'd like to make it right, we'd be happy to come by for a replacement entree.

Mile of Music was awesome! Free water during with the heat/humidity was not only smart but very appreciated!!! Great experience overall. The chairs and food made it possible to stay for a couple bands. Everything all in one spot, music, drinks, food. Recommend more port -a- potties, but on the whole, I would say you thought of everything ❤

This restaurant has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants. LOVE the crab cakes, bang bang shrimp and pretzels for appetizers. The mushroom and Swiss burger is outstanding, and my husband loved their feature shrimp po’boy roll. The staff is always very welcoming and helpful. We’ve been back several times and consistently get a great meal.

Was in town to get away from home for the day and do some shopping. Thought we’d stop in for a fish fry as we ran into someone I knew from Wausau who said they were just at Spats to eat. Since the menu said “generous portion of haddock” that’s what my wife and I ordered (for $16.99). . I also ordered the lobster bisque which was very good, but when our entrees were served we looked at each other and said “that’s it?” Two pieces of haddock, $16.99! Service was great, but a “generous portion” does not mean two small pieces with fries and rye bread. I understand costs of almost everything have gone up but our small dinner was almost $50.00 with two sodas and soup, so we will not be back.
