From beginning to end, our meal and service was very good. Prompt, efficient and friendly staff, good ingredients, happy to make accommodations. While I would have preferred a cocktail, they are waiting on their liquor license and had a wide variety of beer, wine and fun other options including sake and cocktails made with champagne or involved NA cocktails. The caesar was very good (dressing on the side) and the pizza we had was a very good sourdough crust that was perfect for folding, Neapolitan style. So good!

We had a lovely overnight stay at the St. James Social. Brand new rooms and space. The public use sauna was a wonderful perk of the stay, and we were also able to enjoy the rooftop outdoor lounge area before the thunderstorm rolled in. Rooms are small but cozy, and little touches like a turntable and vinyl records made the experience feel special. For those who aren't tech savvy, the check in process is completely remote and registration was necessary before arrival. Although it was nice to be able to have access early, I did miss not having an actual person to talk to when we arrived. I would certainly stay at the SJS again in the future.

Exceptional accommodations! Loved the rooftop patio. The morning coffee bar/English style breakfast perfect way to start the day. The homemade pizza in the restaurant was incredible. We wished we could have experienced another meal there…next time :)

What a lovely place! We greatly enjoyed the wonderful hospitality, quaint feel and the charcuterie-like breakfast. The two that owns SJS even left a little treat for our celebration! We enjoyed the sauna both nights and the rooftop space - both wonderful.
We also loved the food! Amazing flavors and the right amount of portions.

We asked for a new sheets because it looked like dog hair was still on them. The owner seemed upset over the phone, but it was taken care of - so I went with 5 stars.

Would 10/10 recommend!

Atmosphere was great, they really did a good job with decor. The vision of the restaurant is great, food was good but mediocre- service was a bit slow too. If the food stood out a little more and the service was quicker I’d give it a 4 or 5. They have some work to do.

Nice restaurant centrally located in downtown Bayfield - great space with good size bar area. Small hotel located above. We went on a Tuesday (pizza night). Drink menu is beer, cider, wine and THC beverages. No hard liquors, but cocktails were pretty and inventive. Plenty of NA options. Menu was limited to salads and pizzas and unfortunately the kitchen couldn't keep up with the dining room. If the waitstaff had acknowledged the long wait time when we sat down and offered a complimentary appetizer or beverage it would have made a difference. The wait for 2 good (not great) pizzas was close to an hour. Service while friendly, was understaffed. Would try again on a "regular" menu night...

The bar and restaurant were hopping on a Saturday night. We didn’t have reservations so we sat at the bar. The very personable and attentive staff made us feel welcome. The owner made a special effort to make us feel welcome. We loved the contemporary ambiance and background music. We had attended music on the waterfront and were looking for a lighter bite. We split the house Caesar salad and the el pastor tacos. The Caesar is probably the best one I’ve ever had. The tacos were meticulously crafted and oozed flavor in every bite. When I return to Bayfield I will return to the St. James Social. Wonderful experience from start to finish.

Bayfield has held a piece of my heart since the first time I visited — it’s a place full of nature, art, and community treasures. Saint James Social is a perfect new addition to that spirit.

Our retreat group had the joy of dining here, and the hospitality from the family who runs it was truly special. The pizza was incredible, the space was welcoming, and it was clear that so much care has gone into creating this experience.

I’m already looking forward to coming back — next time to stay in their beautiful hotel. Grateful for this new gathering place in one of my favorite towns.

Staying at this hotel is like staying with friends in the best possible way. You just feel so welcome and like you’re at home.

The rooms are gorgeous really tastefully designed. the bed is gigantic and so comfortable sometimes I didn’t wanna get out of it!

But it was worth it to get up because every morning there was also a beautiful spread of food from local producers. Every morning delicious.

The location is amazing. Bayfield is beautiful. There’s plenty of parking but honestly, you’re probably gonna want to eat and drink at the restaurant downstairs for every meal.

This was an incredible, restful, friendly experience, and I would come back every time I’m in Bayfield.

Absolutely the ONLY place anyone should even consider staying at if you're visiting the beautiful Bayfield Wisconsin. The building is beautiful and cozy, and it compliments the cozy charm of the town as well. But, what really sets it apart are the owners. Genuinely some of the kindest people people ive had the pleasure of meeting.

My wife and I chose SJS to celebrate a deeply meaningful milestone - her successful fight with breast cancer. Having recently completed chemotherapy and radiation, we needed somewhere to go to decompress and reflect and just reconnect with each other - without the ever-looming presence of her illness, which was our life for the last year. Truly the most difficult chapter of our lives. My wife saw Bayfield and knew it was the perfect choice for us. Best. Decision. Ever. The owners were prompt and gracious for anything that we needed and the quality of everything was just MILES above anything some big chain hotel could ever offer. We loved our stay.

Even with one mishap on our part (our sweet but, unfortunately anxious, rescue dog chewed up their really nice/comfy duvet) - the owners were so gracious and understanding, they told us we didnt have to pay for the replacement despite us being fully willing to cover the damage. They were extremely compassionate and gracious, especially to our pup, and it made an impression on us. We are extremely grateful.

To the owners: Thank you. You made a real difference for us during a time when we finally had the chance to decompress and gather ourselves back up and, for that, I am truly grateful. Our trip was perfect! My wife and I truly wish you all the success in the world and hope that your establishment is around for many, many years to come because we will be back! (But, maybe we will leave the pup with a dog 'sitter next time! 😅😅)

Thanks again.

What an amazing experience. Rooms were a great blend of design and technology. The "food to table" restauarant not only has a great vibe but creativity rules. Grilled Bone Marrow! Really! Wines were well chosen as are the beers and cider. The European style breakfast was a favorite with well sourced cheeses, charcuterie and more. My final accolade is to the staff. Genuine caring hospitality. And a great location.

The St. James Social was an amazing weekend getaway! We cannot wait to visit again. This is now our go to whenever we visit the Bayfield area.

The Check-In & Check-Out process was super smooth for it’s all done through their online portal. The owner does an amazing job replying and accommodating to any special requests.

We had dinner at the restaurant and it was AMAZING. Gluten free options made my dinner one to remember, and I was so excited when I heard they offer gluten free pizza.

The European continental breakfast alongside with the coffee bar was a convenient and healthy start to our mornings!

Lastly, the rooftop had amazing views of Lake Superior and the sauna is the perfect spot to relax after a long day of hiking.

My husband and I visited Bayfield for our 40th wedding anniversary - we had honeymooned there. We chose this hotel because we wanted something less stodgy than the Rittenhouse, but still in Bayfield proper. I waited several weeks to share a review to see if our initial impression of our stay changed with some distance. Ultimately, our initial reaction remained: It may be a good fit for some, but for us, it was a disappointing $400/night decision that felt more like an Airbnb than a boutique hotel. We had a two night, midweek stay.

The pros: the location is close to ideal. It’s a short walk to the shore and the shops are close at hand. Off-street parking is available, albeit across the street in a grassy lot that was twice blocked by
delivery trucks. We were fortunate to have good weather and our luggage (and us) stayed dry and warm on our walks to and from the hotel. There is an elevator. The room was clean and there was a mini-fridge. Although we could occasionally hear the elevator, there was no guest noise from the hallway or adjacent room. The bed was comfortable. There was a decent WiFi connection. We appreciated that the exterior appearance of the original building was largely maintained.

The cons: I think we had the smallest room; it was the smallest hotel room we’d ever had. This probably influenced our satisfaction quite a bit. There was no closet or luggage rack, just a freestanding metal rack next to the bed for clothes that required hanging. The queen size bed and credenza took up most of the space; a small boudoir-size chair was the only seating other than the bed. Every noise from the bathroom could be heard. The absence of a human at check in and throughout the stay felt off putting - the text messages with the check-in code and stay updates contributed to the Airbnb feel. It was not clear prior to arrival that we would need to rely on our phone for check in details via text or email. We did wonder how a low or no-tech traveler, or one with a dead phone or no signal, would manage. If we had needed assistance with our luggage, there did not appear to be a luggage cart or other assistance available.

The neutrals:: the Parachute bedding and towels were fine, but not noticeably different. The LP player is probably a novelty for many, but we have one. We ate one meal at the in-house restaurant, which was fine, but we were disappointed to learn that it only serves beer and wine. The rooftop space was pleasant, but smaller than I expected from the photographs. We opted not to use the sauna but from a quick look inside, it seemed clean and well maintained. The recommended temp of 165 is lower than what we prefer but is probably a realistic recommendation for many guests.

Conclusion: this fits a niche for some people, but for us and our lodging expectations, it was a disappointment. It could be a fun place for a group of friends or couples who would be more inclined to use the sauna and rooftop as common spaces. The supply of lodging options in Bayfield proper is limited, and room rates obviously will reflect that.

I cannot remember the last time I've loved a place so much that I booked my next stay before leaving but Saint James Social made me do it! If you love historic charm, luxury finishes, refined but relaxed design and sincerely warm hospitality you need to quickly book one of the eight rooms here! Our room was so inviting that it was hard to leave - muted colors, blonde woods, antique brass finishes, a bed layered in beautiful Parachute bedding, a record player with vintage albums, a large marble and zellige tile bathroom and dimmer switches for days to create the perfect atmosphere. The scale of the hotel made our stay feel more like being in a friend's huge, opulent home than being in a hotel. All the rooms are on one spacious floor and at the end of the hall there's a very well outfitted and stocked coffee bar with a traditional coffee maker, several French presses, Antler coffee and Rishi teas. I loved padding down the hall early, making coffee and taking it back to our room. The downstairs bar/lounge and restaurant is so beautiful and delicious and the owners, Annalisa & Cody, so kind and welcoming that we went there both nights, which we would normally not do. We also used the heavenly sauna and carried breakfast up to the spacious rooftop deck to enjoy a view of Lake Superior one morning. Perfection across the board. We're already looking forward to our visit next August!

My wife and I and another couple decided to try St. James Social for an evening meal and none of us came away disappointed. By offering three or four entrees, and changing them frequently, the chef's originality and concentration on quality comes through. Two in our party ordered the tenderloin filet, which the chef prepares using the sous vide (soo-VEED) method, and each declared it to be the best tasting tenderloin filet she's ever had. The wine selection is small, but of very high quality. (My glass of malbec was superb.). We'd award four out of four stars for this restaurant.

I can’t say enough about this place. I road-tripped to Bayfield recently in hopes of catching the Northern Lights. I stumbled upon the SJS Hotel website and gave them a call. They had availability and enthusiastically welcomed me to stay. Co-owners, Cory and Annalisa, suggested viewing the lights from their rooftop terrace and mentioned a sauna on the second floor. You had me at availability, I thought, intrigued by such 5-star amenities and service in a small town. Annalisa texted me check-in details and info on parking and the roof terrace. I arrived late but everything was crystal clear. The room was impeccable...clean, modern, cozy...plus a turntable (respect!). The rooftop terrace was amazing, offering a front-row seat to Northern Lights on full display! In the morning, I poured a fresh coffee and hit the sauna down the hall with windows overlooking Lake Superior! I enjoyed a delicious cinnamon roll in the gorgeous restaurant/bar on the main floor. I had an opportunity to chat with Cory and Annalisa (super friendly!) and shared pics and stories of the Northern Lights. These guys clearly love what they do...and they’re doing it right! Kudos! My husband and I just stayed at the St. James Social for our first anniversary, and it was truly the best hospitality experience we have ever had! I absolutely loved the design of our room, the restaurant and the entire building. It was aesthetically pleasing and visually comforting. I could tell that so much care and thought went into the amenities like the sauna, coffee bar, soaker tub, Parachute robes, towels and bedding, Grown Alchemist and Beautycounter products, having the letter of James in the room, having little cookies waiting upon our arrival, and I could go on and on! We were also amazed by the service at the restaurant! I didn't even remember putting on our dinner reservation that it was our anniversary, but four different people working in the restaurant wished us a happy anniversary! That is unheard of! The food was amazing and we were surprised with two free desserts for our anniversary! We got to interact with both of the owners during our stay and they were both incredibly kind, helpful and welcoming. Many locals asked us where we were staying and we were proud to say we were staying at St. James Social! There is nowhere else we would have rather stayed in Bayfield. Visited St James Social to explore Bayfield in the Winter with a friend and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay! While our goal was to hit the trails and have a fun place to come back to after, we ended up ditching our second planned hike for sauna time at St. James and to enjoy the food & atmosphere!

The rooms themselves are really beautiful and thoughtfully designed, clean and comfortable and an excellent deal for the price, especially midweek in the winter. Just outside you can find a coffee bar and sauna, complete with a cold plunge shower directly inside the sauna (easily one of my favorite sauna experiences in the Midwest!). The rooftop lounge was closed for the winter, but I'd bet that's fantastic in the summer as well.

We were around on wood fired pizza night and got "the socialite", a mozzarella, arugula, asiago, sourdough (made with starter from local Bayfield apples I'm told!) drizzled with balsamic. The menu might be small, but St James Social more than makes up for it with quality.

Despite a small staff the service was excellent and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful! St James Social does a really excellent job of creating an environment that feels upscale and fancy without feeling pretentious, all while staying true to its Northwoods roots; you really get the feeling that all are welcome here, and we didn't feel out of place in our hiking clothes.

St James Social is walking distance to pretty much all of downtown Bayfield (which is really just a few blocks!) and the perfect basecamp for winter adventures. If you're planning on visiting in the off-season, I recommend snowshoeing/hiking the Meyers Beach Sea Caves trail above the ice caves (accessible year round whether or not the caves are frozen), Adventure Club Brewing for brews in an igloo, and hitting Mt. Ashwabay for skiing, and detouring to Washburn to Cafe Coco for breakfast.

Overall this was a really awesome stay and experience, and I would highly recommend it to couples or girls trips as a basecamp for exploring Bayfield!

We didn't stay we came in for drinks. The owners were running the bar and were very friendly.

Just note that it's not a full bar, it's wine, beer/cider, and THC drinks. Note most of the Cocktail offerings were THC based and they did show what the mg were which is probably nice. As someone who can't use THC it was a bit disappointing that there were so few other options. Over all a nice upscale but chill vibe.

I had morning coffee and dinner at the restaurant (did not stay in the hotel).. so I'll review that:
Very nice atmosphere and the food was amazing.. (the menu changes daily for dinner)

Coffees are all espresso based, with a small daily pastry selection.

One of a kind stay in the heart of town. Highly recommend!

The rooms are gorgeous with comfortable beds and linens, and the owners have thought of all the small touches. Cozy robes and a state of the art sauna, coffee bar, roof deck, and easy access to online check-in and keyless entry. It’s a memorable stay in one of our favorite towns. After our third stay, we will definitely be back!

This place is exactly what Bayfield needs. We stayed here over Thanksgiving and were blown away by how beautiful the space is, and the thoughtful touches that went into everything. It’s clearly a labor of love. We had a large family dinner in the restaurant, which was delicious and left everyone feeling very taken care of. Don’t hesitate to book the St James for your next visit to Bayfield.

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the St. James Social this past weekend! We stayed there for our babymoon and were absolutely blown away by how nice of a job Annalisa did with the building. The decor and furnishings all felt very up-scale and looked beautiful. The linens were all Parachute brand which added to the high-end feel. The large sauna was amazing. Rooms were quiet. We did pay for the reserved parking, but ended up not using it because we were able to find free parking on S 2nd St even closer than the reserved parking would have been. We would highly recommend booking a stay here if you are in Bayfield!

This place is STUNNING! I am someone who absolutely cares about where I stay; the ambiance, and comfort at St. James Social is truly unmatched. Being in the heart of downtown Bayfield, you’re steps away from cafes, restaurants, and the boat docks. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the rooftop deck is gorgeous, and I loved being able to enjoy French press coffee in the morning. Checking in and checking out was seamless, all from your phone. The host was available via text or call and they responded quickly to any questions we had. I cannot wait to come back and check out their social lounge! I’m so glad we found our go-to place to stay in Bayfield.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Bayfield, WI, look no further!!! The St. James Social is in the heart of downtown Bayfield and within walking distance to restaurants, shops and the Madeline Island Ferry. Upon arriving at this beautiful boutique hotel we were greeted by the owner who shared the story of the hotel and why it was so special to her. She took the time to give us a tour and shared about the hotels amenities including the sauna, coffee bar and rooftop patio, all of which were amazing! Each of the rooms was unique, the beds were coziest hotel beds I have ever slept in, and the shower and toiletries were luxurious. I can't wait to see what the lobby bar looks like when it is complete. We will definitely be back to stay again!

Soft opening so there wasn't much in the way of common areas but the rooftop deck had a great view, people seemed to be using the beautiful sauna and the coffee counter was great and coffee top notch! So glad for the elevator, which is quite rare in Bayfield!!

Amazing experience here!! Very thorough attention to detail, very prompt and friendly communication with questions/concerns, and the location can't be beat. The kind of place that will leave you not wanting to stay anywhere else in Bayfield. One note, do keep in mind of the 'Social' in the name of the place-things like the coffee bar, sauna, rooftop terrace are communal and may require you to interact with strangers the old fashioned way!

The St. James Social experience was far beyond a 10 score. The check in is easy, the hotel is exquisitely designed, with impeccable workmanship. I know many folks may not notice the detail but we do and we did notice every little detail of beautiful furnishings with lovely linens and a very very comfortable bed with thick, full and luxurious king size pillows , fabulous flooring, sophisticated colors that please the eye and soothe the soul. The sauna, coffee/tea bar and rooftop lounge area are spectacular features and so appreciated in a hotel stay!!! The rooftop not only provided a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Superior but a fresh, clean and relaxing social space to enjoy. The entry point is securely coded with ample room for entry with luggage. There are a couple other delightful and nostalgic surprises that I did not reveal-enjoy! We are already planning our next stay and look so forward to enjoying the main level lounge as well. Thank you for the great service and attention to detail provided!
