This was easily one of the best dining experiences I've had! They were very busy, but we got a table quickly, and our drinks and food came out in a timely fashion. The wait staff was very personable, and everything felt very clean!

I got the Big KC burger and my table ordered ribs as an appetizer, and they were among the best burgers and ribs I've had in my life (and there's been no shortage of burgers in my life). It wasn't inexpensive, but you definitely get more than what you pay for!

My friend and I stopped in after a long day at a video game tournament for food and drinks. I ordered a Reuban and an Arnold Palmer, my buddy got ribs and an Oktoberfest. We sat outside and enjoyed the cool night air, service was great despite being outside where often people are forgotten about.

We had a great time here. Our visit was on a Thursday to grab dinner before a show. Diamond was our server and she was wonderful. Welcoming, attentive, friendly, offered her input on menu questions we had. The sandwiches we had were delicious, we both loved the garlicky cesar salad side dish. All around enjoyable visit. Went there about a month ago with two other people and was told that the wait for a three top was 10 minutes and after waiting close to 30 minutes and watching 4 groups that can after us get seated before us we were finally shown to our table. After sitting, we were left there for about 15 more minutes before they took our drink order, we waited an additional 10 minutes for a beer with a withered lime and an orange juice that had about 20 ice cubes in it. After waiting yet another 15 minutes we decided to pay for what we had and we left. The food looked really good but unfortunately we weren’t deemed worthy to try it that day.

The swinging door was formally a western union telegraph office in its youth, the bar is inside the mackie building where the grain exchange was located, now for the good stuff the beer came out cold and the cod fish fry was crisp and hot, yes I must admit I love a good Friday night Wisconsin fish fry and the swinging door was a great choice, parking is the area can be a real pain but the area is worth visiting

Update Sept 2025: Came back for Taco Tuesday and it did not disappoint! The blackened tacos were incredible, three huge tacos, perfectly seasoned, loaded with flavor, and absolutely delicious. Portion sizes were more than generous, and every bite was spot on.

This place continues to be consistent with both food and service. Still a favorite stop whenever I’m in Milwaukee, highly recommend!

In Milwaukee for business and looking for a quick bite, we stumbled upon Swingin' Door Exchange — what a great find! It was so good, we went back again the next day before heading to the airport. Packed at lunchtime, it’s clearly a local favorite with a great vibe. Everyone was friendly and working hard to keep things moving. The burgers and chicken were delicious, but the real stars were the brussels sprouts and beet side dishes — absolutely mouthwatering. This is officially my go-to spot whenever I’m in town!

My husband ordered the New York strip (medium rare) and brussel sprouts. This is the first time any restaurant has ever served his steak the exact way it was ordered. I ordered the pork chop with brussel sprouts as well. Each were perfectly smothered in onions and mushroom and the brussel sprouts were to die for! I wasn’t going to eat the bun but it was too good to waste. 😂 Highly recommend!! 😋

The Swingin' Door Exchange is a gem of a restaurant - with fantastic food, great service, a cozy interior design, and very affordable prices!

I highly recommend their Ahi Tuna Steak (and, I'm glad I requested some of their delicious tarter sauce, to go with it)!

I had my husband’s 70th birthday dinner at Swingin’ Door last Friday, they don’t take reservations but a time for arrival was recommended and our party of 10 was seated even before we were told our table would be ready. Shelly, Michael and the entire staff are AMAZING!! The food is always top notch and all 10 different orders were delivered within minutes of each other.

We came here just for the Friday Fish Fry because we are good (non) Catholics! Husband had 4 pieces of the Lake Perch with fries, and I had 2 pieces of the Cod with House Chips and Cajun Ranch, with an additional side of Spicy Vermouth Carrots.
Husband loved everything, and ate everything!
I loved the cod, the chips with Cajun Ranch, and even the coleslaw that comes with. German-style coleslaw with a bite from the caraway.
The Vermouth Carrots are grilled to the point of being charred, which I was really excited for, but husband and I had mixed feelings. I found them not flavorful enough, and quite dry. They needed more spice and I wanted them to be sweeter, too. I didn't need them to be glazed but something would have kicked it up. Or some kind of fat - oil, butter, something.
We were headed to the State Fair later so I knew this was the last vegetable I'd get for a while, so I ate them, but I did not enjoy them.
This is a Pub's Pub - very publike. But not a gross pub, I didn't need to be glad the lights were dim. It felt clean, but definitely a traditional dark wood, carpeted pub.

Rarely does a restaurant exceed expectations. Swingin' Door Exchange, Saloon & Eatery is one of those places. Located downtown Milwaukee. The menu is simple, but then there are sides like grilled beets, or spicy vermouth carrots. The cocktails are incredible. The atmosphere is like stepping back in time. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Even a solo traveler will feel welcomed. Prices are so incredibly reasonable in a world where we often spend $50 a person and ask, "What did I just get?" Swingin Door will leave you satisfied and sated. Michael is outstanding, but all the staff is great. Perfect restaurant. Lauren is the best! She knows the menu so well.

I don’t usually write negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share how disrespectfully I was treated at this establishment.

From the start, the male waiter made the experience uncomfortable. He was curt and dismissive throughout the interaction, but the real shock came when I tried to be polite and hand him both menus after ordering. Instead of simply taking them or responding with basic courtesy, he grabbed the menu he needed and tossed the drinks menu onto the couch next to me, as if I were an inconvenience. No eye contact, no "thank you," just a cold, careless gesture.

It’s baffling how someone in hospitality could behave with such rudeness and disregard. I came here to relax and enjoy a meal, not to feel belittled and disrespected. Needless to say, I will not be returning—and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who values basic human decency.

I asked for no onions on my burger but my burger came with onions. When i informed the waiter, instead of the waiter offering a new burger her response was “if you said no onions i would have wrote it down”, followed by her taking my plate and immediately walking away without giving me a chance to respond.

Up until this point “Mel’s” service was not bad at all. She came back and sat a plate of fries on the table stating “you can have these until your fries come” she did not stop for a response. I asked for the supervisor and explained what happened. He said Mel was one of his top servers and asked “what would you like for me to do?”. I declined any further service/food.

My friends said their meals were delicious. Hopefully you don’t have a discrepancy in your meal to ensure a good dinner :)

My last visit to the Swinging Door completely changed my mind for the better. The food really stood out this time. It's not necessarily an amazing dining experience, taste-wise, but knowing that the food is cooked well is always great.

This place on Michigan Street is tight-"cozy tight," as said before. It's an old-school saloon that's packed with tables and has a loud, busy, and fast-paced feel. While we had a 30-minute wait on our first visit, this time was different. It was a busy Friday night, and we walked in just 15 minutes before the kitchen closed at 10 PM, but they seated us right away with no problem.

Service still seemed a bit stretched thin, but they were attentive and got the job done well.

The menu is classic American comfort food, and this time, they nailed it. It feels like it was put together by real chefs. I ordered the Big KC burger, and it was a huge portion. The mozzarella sticks were also good. Everything came out fresh and warm-a complete turnaround from my first visit when some dishes were just mediocre.

After this experience, I'll definitely be back.

Absolutely fantastic in every way. This was my first experience of Milwaukee and they could not have set the bar higher! Me and my party stumbled into this place purely because it was close to our hotel, but it blew us away. My husband and I stopped in for a late lunch as we were walking back to our hotel room from the Baird Center. Right away we loved the vibe, ambiance, and old pub charm. The pub was full when we arrived and were told it would be about 30 min for a table. We looked at the menu and put our order in as soon as we were seated. Busy place, but we'll worth the wait if you're trying to get away from Applebee's, Chili's, and the same old stuff. Excellent choices for food and drinks that are a step above the norm and prepared perfectly. It's probably going to be busy, but the best places always will be. Despite this, the staff focused attention on us every time they came to us and made us feel like the most important people in the restaurant. Sure can't beat that kind of afternoon out in Milwaukee!

We had a fantastic meal & will definitely be back. We stopped in after a Bucks game just before the kitchen closed, they were very accommodating and helpful. The food was AMAZING, after just few bites of our meal our entire party (2 kids & 2 adults) was already trying to figure out when we could come back during our weekend trip. Our waiter, Michael was very friendly & attentive, highly recommend!

Visiting from out of town for a meeting and had time for lunch before a flight back to GA. Went to Swingin’ Door based on these reviews and was glad I did. Service was prompt and friendly, the food even better. Everyone in our group had more than enough to eat and the quality was high across the board. Prices exceedingly fare for someone who is definitely used to, but not happy with, NYC tariffs. Will definitely return on my next visit to Milwaukee.

Yummy spot for lunch lunch or dinner! They do not take reservations, so if you are going for weekend brunch, I recommend getting there right when they open at 11. I really enjoyed the greek scrambled eggs with potato pancakes for brunch. Unfortunately I would not recommend the bloody, so choose a different cocktail. I love the brown bar atmosphere.

UMMMMMM!!!!! YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! Hidden Gem for sure! Perch was very very good ---- did not fall apart like most places. Very crispy and light. The coleslaw is the only flaw depending on your taste buds, but who cares hahah. The prime dip is by far the best thing on the menu. Add the mushrooms and peppers. Get the Brussel sprouts as an additional side with all their works. Get some beers and enjoy such a great spot to eat in the winter time. The place is very packed, but worth the wait. I will be coming back again and again to try other items. The dessert menu rocked. Best place to go eat downtown if you are looking to stay in a friendly fair budget.
