Was brought here by a Hispanic friend who told me this was a very authentic place hand her favorite spot in the Maddison area. I enjoyed my food very much and it was a very cozy and fun place to dine. Staff was very friendly.

Service was slow and food was a little pricey. Main complaint is that they failed to accommodate a dairy allergy we stated ahead of time when ordering. When the rest of the food arrived we learned one person just didn't get to eat.

Shredded beef tacos were fantastic, the service was just outstanding everybody was so friendly and they even came around with a plate of lemons and different things to sort of a clean out your pal a little bit like lemon slices etc which I thought was a nice touch.

Even the chips that they use for chips and salsa seem to be much better and more flavor to them than most Mexican restaurants.

They had plenty of room and was easy to navigate with my walker.pleny seating.

I like you waiters having a handheld payment system that was very quick and easy to use and even know what took me a while at first the waiter was patient and showed me how to use it and it was just great.

And the prices were very fair.

Myself and two friends came into this restaurant last night. We had just gotten back from a long day of hiking and driving and were so excited! As soon as we sat down we noticed that we were being treated differently than other guests. The server was short and rude, and the two times we asked for things (napkins and chips/salsa) she never came back. The food was pretty bland besides the drinks, and all three of us ended up sick. -
As three service workers we have never been treated so grossly. Do better.

Staff friendly and the salsa is so fresh and delicious! Chips are thicker ones so if you’re into that then you will like it here. We got both fajitas with chorizo and the cheese speciality too bottom right and neither was style I’m accustomed to but the flavor was nice! So if your adapted to this more juicy/oily meat style your going love this place as flavors where great all around!

Short review: great atmosphere but gentrified vibes, awful food, and disproportionate prices to the quality.

Long review: This used to be our favorite place to eat Mexican food in Madison! We’ve tried so many other places, but this was the only place that had good authentic tacos. This is our first time coming back since their closing. We got there and were surprised by the new look. We got seated, and were given the complimentary chips and “pico.” Now I use that word lightly because it was the most watered down, flavorless pico I’ve ever had.

The order: 1 Baja taco, 1 grilled shrimp, 1 pescado, 1 Al pastor, and a gallo burrito (grilled chicken). On every single taco that awful flavorless pico was piled on to fill the shell. Half the taco is pico, and they put cheese on the tacos to hold the double shells together, which just doesn’t go with fish or shrimp. The al pastor was oily and didn’t taste of al pastor, had no pineapple. (Oh and every shell is soaked in oil)

The grilled chicken burrito was more burnt than grilled and to make it worse it came out cold. There was almost no chicken in the burrito and it was more pico and beans than anything. If only they had put the amount of chicken as their pico. I would not recommend this place, and definitely disappointed by their increased prices.

Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned—nothing short of amazing. The portions were generous, just the right size. The service was exceptional. Our server was polite, discreet, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu, guiding us through some great choices. It really made the dining experience special.

Our server was so lovely and I'm sad I didn't get her name! From the decor to the customer service, to the food. You GOTTA support this place and treat yoself while you're at it! My wife and I eat here fairly regularly and love the food. We generally get the steak burrito with extra steak and light beans and it is my favorite burrito in madison. The price is very reasonable and the burrito is very big, I usually can't finish it. I would recommend this place to anyone. The service is generally good and food comes out pretty fast.

Update: the tacos here are the best around. Chorizo, asada, pastor are exceptional. Perfect flavors, textures, served hot and a little spicy. Tacos are served with salsa verde and a light red salsa the color of velvety adobo. Both are zesty and delicious. Perfect level of spice. I can't recall a time I've had better. Service is consistently friendly and competent. Tapatíos es la mera cosa en Madison.

Update May 2025: Recently Tapatíos was closed on 2 Saturday afternoons we had hoped to visit. The first closure was updated on Google Maps, saving us the trip out there, but we were still disappointed. Last Saturday May 3 the restaurant was closed but Google Maps had it labeled open. We drove out there and we were told to come back at 4pm. That didn't work for us.

Lastly, inconsistent margaritas are an issue. I think the servers each make their own margs instead of having a dedicated bartender. Paying $10 for a sub par margarita made us not want to return. Then, we tried to go back for lunch twice to give them another chance - and they were closed both times. Tapatíos is able to serve excellent food and margaritas - just hope they are open and hope you get a competent mixologist for a server.

I wrote a review 5 years ago, complimenting the food and expressing disappointment with the bar service. We enjoy the food and have been back several times since, but rarely ordered mixed drinks. Our experience last night was a repeat. The food prices are on the higher side but, the food is really good. Likewise, the alcohol drink prices are on the high side but the service is poor at best. Our service was also only mediocre. Our group of 4 ordered drinks as soon as a server came to our table. Each drink was directly from the menu without customization. We waited over 15 minutes before our server came back to our table to check in and I asked about our drink order and had to ask if we could place our food order. We ordered our food, and our server returned in just a few moments later to check on us when I again asked about our drink order. Our food was served fairly promptly and we were almost half done before we were served our drinks. And then our server just disappeared for a long while. She was working tables but not paying any attention to us. If it weren't for the location convenience and food quality, we likely would rarely return if at all. Unfortunately, our experience hasn't changed.

The tacos are consistently very good, pretty much no matter which one. Tonight I tried the fajita trio. It was good - there was a nice char on the meat and vegetables, though they could use more seasoning, likewise with the rice. The refried beans were good. The rest of our group of 6 had tacos and, between them all, had most all of the choices covered.

We also had drinks and, while they were good, they were incredibly slow to be served. We ordered our drinks just after we were seated and 3 of the 6 were served after we got our food. They seriously need to have a bartender for the evening rush instead of the current arrangement.

Staying nearby for a few weeks and will definitely make this a regular spot to dine. Sat at the bar and was warmly welcomed by Caesar, Carla, Lee, and Marlene who all graciously tended to my meal and beer. I had the Fajitas Campechanas (has chicken, steak and chorizo) and honestly it was one of the best fajitas I've ever had, and I've tried a lot! Hot and sizzling of course, but perfectly cooked meats, peppers and onions, with plenty of juice but not too greasy as it is in many other places. Also served with plenty of guacamole and rice and beans of course. If you like to add hot spice to your meal as I do, then you have to try their homemade hot salsa (you'll need to ask for the hot version) which tastes amazing and is also sufficiently spicy as well. I definitely will be going back and look forward to trying additional dishes there when I do.

Sharing my experience as a Mexican who misses real Mexican food.
This place hit all the right places. Went there with my family. The birria tacos were great. Pastor was pretty good. Chicken was also good. The rice was the best tasting rice I’ve had in the US. the beans were a tiny bit salty but delicious nonetheless. The only complaint would be the torta, bread was a bit burnt to the point where you could taste it.
Salsas were pretty good.
The margaritas were great.
The michelada was a solid average.
Service was friendly.
Place was clean.

I've only gone here for the food, but it's now always constant terrible customer service going in. Took over 8 minutes to acknowledge me when I got there despite there being 3 different employees walking past me and looking. Food was ready 25 min plus from the original time they told me. For those who are foodies...
This was my first visit to Tapatios.
I chose the beef chimichanga, where the shredded beef is slow cooked. I requested both their green spicy and mild red sauce. Both were very good, though I preferred the green.
The portion is enough for 2
I would recommend to not add sour cream, for it will mute the nuance of the spices.

I have a lot of food allergies (pescatarian and gluten, dairy, and egg allergies), and the menu was easy to navigate on my own. The staff was also knowledgeable & took my allergies seriously. There were so many options for me to enjoy - not something I get to say often! Between two orders of tacos & a burritos between our table, we left full and happy. We'd previously gotten delivery from here, and the food was stellar then. Highly recommend sitting down & enjoying a margarita next time you're looking for good Mexican food.

Dry and disappointed. i just finished. my Carne Asada Plate. 1st time to this establishment (and last). i walked in, nice crowd and pleasant modern mex:amer small restaurant to pick up my food. not yet ready, 3 minutes,fresh out the door. home in 5 min. 1st thing i noticed was how light the to go container felt. when open, i saw why. 1 scoop rice, 1 scoop beans (not enough) the steak looked very dry. IT WAS and salty. very dispointed. cost just over $17. no problem but couldn’t finish it because it was so so dry. oh well.

We have been here SEVERAL times. You can’t go wrong with just about anything on their menu. I’ve tried their brunch chilaquiles (amazing- add some protein!), tacos, queso tacos (also amazing) their burritos. Their drinks are also amazing! One of my favs are their mojitos. I recently tried their blackberry mojito. It was delightful!

Give this place a try! It’s family owned and their food also tastes so delicious and FRESH!

We LOVE Tapatios! It’s such a cute spot and everything we’ve ever ordered has been absolutely delicious. Excellent birria, enchiladas verdes, pollo al carbon, drinks, etc.! Our daughter loves the authentic Mexican kids options, especially the rice and beans that come with every entree. We’ve been there many times and will continue to go back.

After this place was recommended to me for literally years I finally got to eat lunch here. My food was excellent! I appreciate multiple vegetarian and vegan options. Cauliflower as an option! It’s good! Our server was wonderful. The decor is not really my style very industrial cement floor and metal, but manages to be inviting. Big sturdy booths and lots of space.

Visited here for a work lunch recently. Tapatios Cocina is a small Mexican restaurant in a nicer strip mall. There is a small bar and fairly limited table/booth seating. We were able to find a booth without problem. The service was good, and the food was served quickly. I had the lunch chimichanga. Very tasty and a perfect amount of food for lunch.

Very reasonably priced and so yummy. Staff is always kind. I love the shrimp burrito and have gone back for it multiple times! My boyfriend loves the shrimp and steak burrito too. I’ve done takeout for lunch in the past and that was good too.
