If you want THE best Mexican food in central Wisconsin but dont ever get invited over to a Mexican household, El Zabas is your best option. Look im just a white dude, which means I don't typically like Tripe. However the Menudo at El Zabas is phenomenal, Menudo is soup made with Tripe, I didnt think I'd like it but I love it. Its a little spicy for many. The best Birria, birra PIZZA, birria ramen, quesebirria. Every single item ive ever ordered from El Zabas has been so delicious I seriously cannot pick a favorite. If you value flavor and want to treat your taste buds to a gift come to El Zabas. I don't give 5 stars lightly they earned it at El Zabas

I had a taco. the taco was about 3 in in diameter open face. Had dry chunk beef. And a little sour cream on top. Then without permission they charge a service fee of $2.69 or such thing. There wasn't any service. It was $3 for soda. Tables were dirty. There was just a list of the items for sale. No idea on what was on them. I can't even get close to answering the question was I satisfied.

I had just returned from Cuernavaca, Mexico, where I enjoyed a delicious meal of pozole, (Spanish pronunciation: [po’sole], a traditional Mexican soup made from hominy with meat (typically chicken or pork), and garnished with shredded lettuce or cabbage, chili peppers, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, salsa or limes. Incredible food; texture, flavor and presentation. My first visit I had chorizo tacos, corn tortillas still warm from oil. That, the beans, rice... and their pork beans. Wow. Today I took my wife there, excited to share how incredible their food was - and it didn't disappoint. The sopas were crispy and tender and super flavorful. The birria tacos were (soaked) in deliciousness.

Zero stars. I ordered a carne asada burrito, but it was pretty much all rice with 2 giant chunks of tomato, almost no cheese or meat, no guac or pico de gallo. Flautas were burnt black, beans were runny, rice was bland, quesadillas use mozarella for some reason, carne asada pieces were tiny, super salty and tasted like ground beef, Jamaica tastes watered down. It was way overpriced. I spent almost my entire life a 20 minute drive from the mexican border and this is the WORST mexican food I've ever had.

Very good and authentic traditional Mexican food, quickly became my favorite local Mexican restaurant/Cafe in the wausau area.

Prices are very reasonable and the food comes quickly. Friendly staff and a large menu.

Only drawback I have noticed is I have tried to call in an order ahead of time to be ready for pickup and both times no one answered the phone. Understandable as they are often busy but it would make the whole takeout experience a bit smoother.

I always love the opportunity to try a new spot, and this place did not disappoint! You could tell the tortilla, sope, and gordita shells were made right after you order, fresh and crisp! The chorizo has to be some of the best I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying, perfect balance of spice and savory with just a little extra kick (try it in the campechano). The lengua and cabeza? Out of this world good. But the part that really stood out to my wife and I was when the gentleman behind the counter came out after our meal and talked with us for a little bit. He even answered some of my questions on how cabeza is prepared, but unfortunately wasn't willing to give away his lengua recipe, which is understandable considering it's some of the best I've ever had. If you are in the Wausau area and looking for a new Mexican food spot, look no further!

I love Mexican food; this was the best I've ever had. I ate the gordita with lengua, the burrito with birria, and the sope with the chorizo-beef mixture. My favorite thing was the sope; the vessel was tender and crisp, the meat was very tasty, and the whole thing was deeply complimented by the green salsa. The burrito was spicy and refreshing. The best bites were when the fresh avocado, onion, and cilantro mingled with the spicy, savory beef. The gordita had a wonderful crust and the lengua was a lovely balance of chewy and tender and paired well with the salty, stretchy cheese. I highly recommend this place. I will visit everytime I drive through Wausau from here on out.

Order chips and salsa - seriously, the chips are made to order, the salsa is sooooo delicious - fresh ingredients, a touch of spice, lots of cilantro, perfect flavor. Vegetarian here- they kindly accommodated my request for no meat sopes, which were excellent as well. I didn’t ask about pork in the refried beans, i really should have. Please do if that is a concern. My dining companion ordered a steak quesadilla, which she said was excellent as well.

Good and authentic taqueria. While I didn't have any tacos, I did have a burrito. The burrito was very good, and brought back memories of SoCal taquerias. There was a little too much cheese, for me at least. I also had a gordita, and that was very good. It was "homemade" and fresh, I would have preferred a more traditional style, beans & cheese,, yet it was still very good. I also had a Sope, which again was "homemade" and very delicious. I recommend the salsa roja, as it was flavorful and had a nice heat.

If I am in the area again, I will be visiting here again.
