The Black Sheep is a small and minority-owned farm-to-table restaurant and catering service based in Whitewater, WI. The Black Sheep is community focused. We source as many ingredients as we possibly can at a local level. "Black Sheep" is a phrase referring to an individual or entity that is unafraid to stand out - to be different. We take pride in our processes, pour love into our food, and look forward to every opportunity to show our guests why standing out is a far better option than fitting in.
We are open for Dinner and Late Night

El Salvador by way of Wisconsin, with some Italian. Great pupusas. Tasty grilled arrachera. Braciole was very tender. Owner is quite friendly. Some outdoor seating. Go.

We hired chef Jay to cater a baby shower for 35 women and it was so delicious! Everyone complimented the food. They even brought serving platters that matched our woodland shower theme. I would highly recommend the food and the service and if you have a party they are the perfect choice for catering your next event!

I had dinner here once a year ago and had such a great experience. I think about the amazing food I ate here all the time and was sad to see that itβs temporarily closed. The food was absolutely amazing, I love that they had a vegan option on the menu. The owner was so kind and very knowledgeable on the food. I loved the vibe and the decorations, it was so cozy. I hope to see that they are open again soon because I would love to come back.

I miss the old Black Sheep. I went with my husband about a month ago and wondered what happened to the restaurant. We had tried to stop once before but it was closed despite the hours on the door.
I thought I heard there were new owners and I was right. Limited menu (decent burger and gluten free bun), but strangely quiet (only one other couple and they were seated right next to us) and total confusion when I asked for a tea and was first ignored and then given hot water in a metal pitcher. I donβt feel the need to return anytime soon.

Way way way over priced. Paper menus were disgusting, full of old food. They were out of everything on the menu. Made my old fashioned with water rather then 7 up. Ordered a petite filet, got a what I think is a New York strip. For the price of dinner, the service was mediocre. I really love supporting local but I regret not cooking steak at home. I went for a special dinner and I left extremely disappointed.

I ordered a Hamm's beer I saw sitting in the beer cooler. The bartender informed me they were reserved for the owner? Bar was practically empty and took me 15 minutes to get any service. Really cool place, hopefully they get some things together

I am not a fan of negative reviews when you don't give the place a chance to make your complaints right. That being said, I disagree with other reviews and I will not be back. 1 simple piece of advice... I appreciate places that have an elevated experience, at the very least, let people have a small taste of your 2 cabs by the glass when they order the filet. We asked,, were told no, and that we could flip a coin if we wanted.. Small cost to you up front but you would have made it back 2-3x easy. Lots of potential in this concept, but just missing the mark as far as I'm concerned.

We had them for our daughter's wedding. I would not recommend for a wedding. Communication was very poor and it was stressful doing business with them. Food was good, but was served late and was cold by the time some guests received their dinners. Although I was hopeful new management would do a good job, they were unable to meet expectations..

To be honest, communication & follow up was horrible! Jay didnβt remember me when I called, messed me up with a wedding party. Food truck was supposed to arrive at 3:30 & didnβt show up until 4:15. I give them a 4 stars because when they actually showed up the food was amazing & service was great! Everyone loved it! I just hope you understand Jay, communication & organization will make or break your business. The food was great though, thank you!

Wedding Catering review: DISASTER -would give negative stars
We chose The Black Sheep back in July of 2021 for our May 27, 2022 wedding & had an amazing tasting with Tyler (previous owner) & created a delicious menu to suit our dietary needs. In March 2022, we were sent an email stating the ownership had changed & they now wanted to charge us $2300 more than our original signed contract. We negotiated to pay an additional 25% to cover inflation. We were promised endlessly the quality & menu would be the same as our original tasting.
We had planned a family style meal: Mediterranean chicken, braised short rib, roasted red potatoes& red curry pad Thai (gluten free & vegan) Asian sesame salad (GF) & late night mini Chicago dogs, charcuterie board & homemade red roasted hummus w veggies & bruschetta.
2. Our tasting was high quality nuts, cheeses, meats, chocolates &dried fruits. We were given snap peas and summer sausage and chunks of cheese with some fruit & crackers.
3. Vanilla pudding was served instead of homemade red pepper hummus. That was simply mind boggling as to how vanilla pudding could be served instead of hummus & it was requested to be removed & were offered no replacement.
4. Tasting was spring mix edamame salad-What we got was Walmart shredded lettuce with peanuts & ramen noodles(not GF). We had numerous GF guests including the bride herself-that couldnβt eat it.
6. We never got any red roasted potatoes.
7. We paid for a red curry pad Thai with tofu and veggies & were served mushy noodles with eggs & no tofu. this was the dish the bride (myself) had picked out & the dish was served with egg (not vegan). Not to mention we had guests who were also vegan & some gluten free who had no safe option. once again was embarrassing to not have meal options for our guests.
8. no trust that the cooks were actually understanding the importance of what gluten free & vegan was & no food for the bride -we had to order her a meal from a nearby restaurant.
9. It was asked to the groom if the gluten could cause anaphylaxis or if someone would die. It seems as though answering βno, but people including the bride would become very sickβ was not enough to keep the gluten out of the meals. As someone with celiac disease, it is unfortunate that the guidelines were not taken seriously, even after numerous emails & phone calls stating how important this was. It is even more sad because every wedding Iβve been a guest at has managed to get it correct.
10. An outside serving /catering company was used to serve the tables & was clearly understaffed with the food coming out slowly and the food being cold for many tables.
11. Our late night snack was not provided. We had paid for mini Chicago dogs. We were instead given peanut butter & jelly, popcorn & baked Mac and cheese- again cutting corners and providing cheap food. nobody had asked us about this until the day of the groom was told we did not have our late night food. We were then told you could get hotdogs, but at this point we knew they would not be the mini Chicago dogs we had ordered and still would not be what we had wanted.
12. No apology was ever given-. Many people approached the food truck to express the issues & we were met simply with shrugs and non answers.
13. The invoices we were given were wrong numerous times. We had to actually calculate and correct them ourselves and email your catering team back with the correct amounts.
We had numerous calls letting bishop and jay know what needed to be gluten free and vegan (can provide email receipts). The communication was very poor throughout the experience after Tyler sold the business.
Our wedding felt extremely cheapened by the quality and service of the food.
We are posting this review to help other couples who may have considered this company for their catering or are having them later this year so they do not have the same disaster we did. We wanted to discuss all of these issues over the phone or email but after two weeks and multiple attempts to contact the owner Jay we have resorted to online review.

The Black Sheep was booked for our wedding in November of 2022, We booked with Tyler, the original owner.
Fast Forward to early 2022 when we find out on social media that TBS has been sold to one of his employees. We were never contacted directly about the ownership change but was proactive on contacting them afterwards to see if it affected our June 2022 wedding - we were assured it wasnβt
So imagine our surprise when ANOTHER COUPLE reached out to us with a new invoice of more than DOUBLE the original price that was sent THEM & not us. This happened 4 months before our wedding.
We contacted TBS via email, following up twice for a response & finally had to call & speak to Jay, the new owner.
We renegotiated for 30% above the original cost since we felt we were backed against a wall & felt we would not find a new caterer of similar quality food in such short notice.
Jay never impressed me with the 2 phone calls I had with him to ensure our day would be what we expected as if we booked with Tyler. I was told he was buying enough food just to break even & when I asked for the amount of hors dβoeuvres he was making for our 160+ guests, I was told between 180 & 210.
Honestly - the ONLY reason that Iβm giving 2 stars is because Tyler, the original owner, was the point man/cook at our wedding & was an absolute rockstar. We came to find out that Jay was not even there because he was IN a wedding. Tyler was able to step in after just being cleared from traveling internationally the past few months.
The food & service was excellent (giving Tyler all the credit for that) but the overall experience dealing with Jay was a headache.

!!!UPDATE!!!: We had reservations the day after graduation for the Sunday brunch they just. We walked in and were told the resaurant was closed. Nobody called or reached out to us to let us know they had decided to close for the day so we had to go to a different restaurant and wait a long time because so many families and large groups were in town for the college graduation. Very frustrating.

Black Sheep was our caterer for our wedding on 04/09/2022. The staff at our wedding was professional and accommodating. The head waitstaff went above and beyond to ensure the head table felt well taken care of, and the owner, Jay, was on-site to ensure the event ran smoothly. All the guests received their selected meals.
We were the first wedding for Black Sheep under new ownership. Unfortunately, the transition between the old owner, Tyler, and the new owner, Jay, led to some miscommunication and differing expectations, including the dishes served, taste, presentation, and timing of plating. I don't anticipate this to be an issue going forward for couples since the transfer of ownership was a unique scenario.
The biggest frustration we had working with Black Sheep was the delayed communication. We were told there would be an increase in pricing (with the new ownership) about 2 months prior to the wedding (again, unique to the circumstances due to the transfer of ownership). The new price was almost double our initial signed contract quote, this was negotiated to 20% increase of the initial signed contract quote. Timeliness of receiving invoices were often delayed or incorrect, which made payment and discussion of negotiating difficult. Additionally, we received the final invoice 1+ week after sending in our final numbers (and only a few days prior to the wedding). When we sent some of our concerns/feedback, it did take over a month for a response (and a follow-up prompting email).
It's unfortunate our experience wasn't what we anticipated since weddings are a once in an a lifetime experience, but we appreciated Jay apology/response to our concerns/feedback and he offered us a free meal as an act of good-faith.

Absolutely beautiful restaurant and a very enticing menu! My wife and I went there about a month ago and I enjoyed their Old Fashioned of the month made with orange cream whiskey. The concept fits Wisconsin to a T! In addition, their chef changes the featured dishes every month to match that of in-season produce and flavors, so the most local and highest quality ingredients can be used. Pictured are the Yuca fries with a chipotle aioli, the jerk chicken with a coconut rice and pineapple salsa, and for the wife, of course, the mac and cheese. But happy to say it was one of the best Mac and cheeses weβve ever tasted and you can tell the noodles were homemade which made it even better. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very chic and made you feel like you were eating a home cooked meal.

Prior to covid shutting businesses down I would be a regular at the Sheep stopping by at least once a week. Stopped by for a late night menu theyβre currently offering; I placed by order at 8:34 and was told I could pick up my food at 10:15. I get there at 10:15 food wasnβt ready. I come back at 10:30 and there was items still missing from my order. I will not be returning due to lack of professionalism. Management needs work. If you canβt provide something donβt offer it.

I wish I could give it more like 4.5 stars. The food is always something new and exciting with crazy ingredients and combos. The only downside is I always spend way more time there than I'd like. What I think should be maybe an hour and a half meal turns into more like two and a half hours. They are usually understaffed and with a drink, app, entre, and dessert, the time it takes in-between to get the next course is slow. They just need to be better about timing.

We're convinced The Black Sheep provides the best food for catering events in southern Wisconsin. In reflecting on weddings we'd attended, and comparing other catering options, none of the food ever really stood out. Chef Tyler has mastered a way to provide top quality, farm-to-table food for large events. Our biggest critique would be that there's opportunity to improve communications amidst the day-of staff to ensure they're all on the same page to execute things as planned. That said, we would recommend The Black Sheep and are excited for their future successes!

I have literally never been disappointed by the Black Sheep, but I am disappointed in myself for not reviewing them before now. Weβve been here for almost every occasion: their Valentineβs Day tasting menus, regular date nights and their food trucks to name a few. Tonightβs new menu tasting was absolutely fantastic. We love that they use local ingredients, that the menu isnβt static, and that they bring in some foreign cuisine that weβd otherwise have to go to Madison or Milwaukee to have. This is by far one of our favorite restaurants in the area, and we are so lucky to have them. Thank you, Chef Tyler, for so many years of phenomenal food. We will be back.

Tyler and his team catered our wedding 5/29/2021 and did a phenomenal job. We worked with him to create a custom menu for our guests. Throughout the entire night, guests raved about the food and how inclusive The Black Sheep was to those with dietary restrictions.
As the couple, we were extremely grateful to Tyler for checking in on the both of us, as well as the bridal party to make sure everyone was taken care of during the cocktail hour. Having been in multiple weddings, it is very rare that the caterer will take the initiative to prioritize the bridal party.
In addition to the food, The Black Sheep bartending staff was wonderful. Everyone loved the whole experience! Thank you to everyone who helped make our day so incredibly memorable.

My only complaint is the owner's loyalty to Whitewater. I wish there was a Lake Geneva location. You know food is good when you contemplate driving an hour just to eat food - yes itβs that good. The food NEVER disappoints at The Black Sheep in Whitewater! Chef Tyler and his team do an amazing job of using locally sourced food for their ever-changing monthly menu. The amount of flavor that they can put into each bite never ceases to amaze me. Tonight I had the Andoulle Sausage and Gnocchi and each bite was amazing. We also had the rib-eye which was cooked perfectly and barely needed to be cut. It was that tender! The craft cocktails are always done right and be sure to order their monthly old fashioned. Tonight's featured Jameson and a splash of Guinness. We did not save room for dessert, which made me want to cry because the homemade whipped cream on any of the desserts is always a treat. Chef Tyler is charismatic and personable and almost always makes at least a stop or two at each table to converse and get feedback on the meal. Top notch.

The Black Sheep catered our wedding and we could not be more thankful! Chef Tyler and his team were incredible. From the tasting to the event, The Black Sheep blew us away. To start the tasting shouldn't be called a tasting - it should be called a feast. Chef Tyler listened to our desire to have untraditional wedding food and provided customized menu options. On the day of, we had more compliments on the food (especially the lamb orzo - yum!) than another aspect of the wedding. Chef Tyler personally checked in with every table and made sure everything was up to par. One of the best decisions we made for our wedding and we could not be happier with the outcome. Thank you!! I went to school at UW-Whitewater and use to come here whenever I got the chance. I decided to come back for Valentineβs Day and Iβm so glad I did. They offered us a NINE course dinner for $55 a person and it was truly spectacular! The owner Tyler is truly amazing and has a true passion for what he does. The staff here are courteous and helpful as well. Also I recommend the house lemonade! Perfect date night restaurant or if your family is in town for a visit!

My husband and I βfoundβ this restaurant as we visited Whitewater totally by accident ...or was it βserendipityβ? Our experience was incredible from the moment we stepped in the door...welcoming, friendly, accommodating and DELICIOUS! A menu that is creative, but not βweirdβ. Our server, Jordyn, was exceptional. Fine dining, casual atmosphere, college town.... winning combination.

Locally source proteins and produce, what more could you ask for! We went they for my 57th birthday. My lovely girlfriend of 16yrs, had the fillet with mash, it was cook to perfection (med rare), she cleaned her plate! I had the strawberry rhubarb chutney over a grilled chicken breast with quinoa and an excellent dish... We will always return! I tip my hat to the Black Sheep!! Bravo everyone!!

By far one of the greatest restaurants weβve been too. We stop by every chance we get on our way to/from Chicago. They have literally the best grits weβve eaten North of the South (and better than most of the south too!). The composition of there grits changes from month to month, along with most of their menu. Which means there is always something new to try. My mouth begins to water just thinking about how good it was. The staff is super friendly too. One of the chefβs will always come out and say hullo, which makes for a nice dinner environment. This is definitely well worth the stop!

The most excellent steak we have ever had! We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip and the rib ribeye steak to share between the two of us. Plenty of food for us. Also had an exceptional old fashion with bourbon from a local distillery. Really, really great local place! Worth every penny for really amazing food!

I'm from out of town and was looking for someplace to eat, and this place came up during my search for restaurants in the area. I chose this place because the other results were the same old pizza, bar & grill, chinese, mexican, fast food type restaurants. If you're looking for an alternative healthier place to eat, I recommend this place. I felt the price was reasonable for the amount and quality of food that I got. I had the Vegan Brat dinner and Kale/Beat Dip with Nann. I love that the meat and produce are local. The service was friendly, and Matt came out to introduce himself and asked how the food was. I found him to be a very pleasant individual. The server, whose name I did not get, was also very pleasant. There was a sushi class going on, and I was the only one at the bar and one couple in the corner. Nice atmoshphere, nice staff.

Friday 02/08/19 took parents and significant other out to celebrate my mother's 93rd Birthday! Quiet corner up front, warm on cold evening, server was nice and attentive, we took our time, flat bread appetizer was very good. Drinks were fine with mother, she had a vodka gimlet, I had a gin, mine was okay, but Helen liked hers. throw back to 50's. Chris had sauvignon blanc with a great nose, light and crisp. Dad had the pork, I had salmon and Helen and Chris had the chicken special, strips of chicken over a pasta bowl with Tyler's version of alfredo sauce. That was more carbs then the girls could finish and they took about half home. My salmon was a good 6 oz with a light lemon and caper sauce over mashed potatoes, a Tyler go to, but fine on a cold night. Along side of each plate was a serving of mixed veg and red cabbage which was just enough with a different taste. We ordered desserts, one, the best was a pumpkin bread pudding with a scope of ice cream, the other was his version of chocolate mousse with dark pits that balanced the sweetness of the mousse. Father finished both up after we had our fill.
They serve coffee in a French press and by the smell, use a good brand.
We had come early but not a problem as they do not offer a Friday fish fry; they had a good crowd that thinned out after our 2 hour stay, but the wine tasting dinner in back was going strong, with lots of laughter, I suspect fired up from the wine. We try to get here as many times was we can and it is our go to meet up place when other family members gather. Tyler has a lot on his plate with the catering and the barbecue place, keep up the good work.

Due to the weather emergency we were unable to attend their cooking class tonight. When I called to let them know I was rudely told they offered no refunds and I couldn't reschedule. I'll never go back and will be sharing my experience whenever this restaurant comes up in conversations. I'd strongly suggest trying another restaurant.

Nice farm to table place in Whitewater. They prominently display the local providers on a chalkboard by the bar and the server also made it a point to stress them. Part of the menu remains constant while the rest rotates each month. Service was good, we had a very undercooked meal and they promptly addressed it and brought a different entree since our diner changed their mind after the undercooked issue and then they comped the new entree. Nice and warm on a cold day with a great selection of comfort food. Very creative and delicious vegan meatloaf.
