I was disappointed tonight, went with friends for fish. We waited by the hostess station for 15 minutes and no one greeted us. The dining room was half full. Another couple said the hostess was preparing a table for them. The owner walked past us and didn't say anything. We asked the bartender and a waitress and they said someone will be with us. We waited a while longer and left. It will take some time before we decide to visit again.

What do you mean you can't have dinner at the bar anymore? That is absolutely lousy customer service. We should be able to choose where we would like to have dinner, not sure why you think you can.

Did not have more than an hour to find out how the food was. Service just to greet us (4) took awhile. Placed a drink order and did not get back to the table for sometime. Then only received two of the four drinks and needed the waitress have to get ice-cream to help make the two drinks and only one needed ice-cream.
In the mean time another table had been seated ordered drinks, meals and received service of drinks and meals before we had been asked what we wanted to order for food.

Food was very good. From soup and salad bar to fettuccine alfredo with chicken and a filet mignon.
Only complaint there was steak was pretty rare for ordering medium well. Not the end of the world though. It was fine.
The service from our waitress was excellent! Jennifer did an outstanding job!
My only complaint is with the establishment staffing I guess. They should definitely have a busboy or gal. All the waitresses were hopping and doing a great job. The problem is all the time they have to spend clearing tables while taking orders and serving people. Most places have someone to bus tables. It makes things go so much smoother in a restaurant.

My husband and I decided to try the fish fry one night, we had never been there before. The fish was excellent, cooked perfectly. I had the cod battered and my husband had the seafood sampler. His was disappointing. The pieces of fish were so small, the fries looked like potato peels that were scraped off the floor. He tried the clam chowder and it had way too much dill. I also had a baked potato that wasn’t quite done. I am a coleslaw and tartar sauce connoisseur and both were horrible. Slaw was fluorescent green and tasted terrible and tartar sauce would choke you with dill. I think your chef needs help.

The bar tender was amazing more observant then our waitress Jennifer.. I swear she got lost bringing me an ice tea so I asked the bar tender for one and she was happy to help and five min late Jennifer comes out with it and was like I almost forgot.. who forgets a patrons beverage.. it wasn’t busy and we saw the other server and bar tender more then our server honestly won’t be back just cause of that .. food was okay nothing to phenomenal honestly think their steak prices are way to high for this area but the dining room was amazing. But our waitress Jennifer was awol half the time and was never seen she was friendly but not very good at her Job..

The night held so much promise, only to be left with disappointment. We came to the Broken Spur as part of a rehearsal dinner. We unfortunately started the night by being shoved into a small room with not enough seats for our reservation. It continued with an agonizing wait to place our order and drinks. Even after waiting patiently, many of our drinks never even showed up. An hour and a half after placing our order our food finally showed up, cold and showing signs of sitting too long under a heat lamp. The salad bar remained bare and unstocked. I would advise avoiding at all costs, regardless of what apology might be offered.

Food was not good, bread was doughy, small portions of food and the Alfredo was more like soup than pasta. The steak for the Alfredo was good. Place was nice and service was awesome. Food wasn't good at all and was heavily overpriced for the amount and quality received. The Shirley Temple also sucked

Our server was awful. My husband and I were seated at the same time as a table for 6. For some reason we were seated at a very small table when there were normal sized tables available.
Next- No one came to take our beverage for over a half hour. Meanwhile the table of 6 people has beverages, appetizers, and access to the salad bar.
At the 38 minute mark of sitting down our server comes and takes our beverage and dinner order. 25 minutes later my drink finally appears. At an hour and 20 minutes our food is finally served. I got a loaded baked potato and it wasn't all the way done and barely had any cheese, bacon and chives. The filet was done perfect.
Honestly I was so disappointed and this was my birthday dinner.

I just want to point out; the table of 6 is gone, long gone table bussed about 10 minutes before we got our food. The whole thing was ridiculous. Seriously you spend $100 on dinner and we were treated awful.

My husband and I ate at this restaurant back in the summer and the food was amazing.
Unfortunately this time it was a different experience. I had the shrimp with ravioli. Some of the shrimp were undercooked and had a fishy taste and some were overcooked and dry. The ravioli stuffed with mushroom was good. My husband had lobster mac. His dish was very bland and soupy.
For the amount we paid we expected a far better dinner. We will not be going to this restaurant again.

I do not normally write reviews like this, but feel I am obligated since our experience was absolutely TERRIBLE!! Last night was our first and LAST time we will be visiting The Broken Spur. We had a party of 4 and were seated at a table half the size of the booths, where they were only seating parties of 2. Once seated at our table we were handed menus and never asked if we wanted anything to drink. We had to ask our server if we could even order beverages. She did take our drink order and proceeded to take our dinner orders. My husband and I were given the option of soup or salad bar with our entrees, but the other 2 in our party were not. My husband and I were pretty much finished with our salads when the bartender finally arrived with our beverages. Our server was standing near our table when the beverages arrived so I asked if the other 2 individuals should have been given the option of soup or salad bar as well. She did not even respond, however the bartender did by saying YES. My husband and I both ordered the scallops with risotto, one individual ordered the herb encrusted walleye and the other ordered the seafood trilogy. Each entree was awful. The "herb encrusted" walleye was caked in oil soaked panko, the "creamy white wine butter sauce" seafood trilogy was so fishy the gnocchi was inedible, and the scallops with the “crackling’” sauce were nothing more than 4 scallops with a bunch of pork belly doused in a sweet BBQ sauce. When the "chef" came around to our table I mentioned to him I did not know this entree came with pork belly as I do not eat that. He simply responded stating the menu should be updated with a better description. That was it. Since I received that sort of response nobody else was even willing to waste their breath explaining why their entrees were unfit. My husband who normally does like pork belly stated it was so salty he couldn't even eat it. We were there for at least an hour and a half to 2 hours and were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink and after our entrees arrived to the table we had to ask our waitress if she could clear our dirty salad and appetizer dishes away just so we had room on our table. It's very unfortunate as we spent over $200 to celebrate 2 birthdays and it was a complete disappointment.

When we arrived, someone was complaining to the hostess about the food. When he walked away, I asked her what the problem was, and she said that he said his food was undercooked, but he had no reason to complain that it was as just fine. Thought that was kinda strange to roll your eyes and basically say a customer was lying…

Anywho,… Ordered the baked fish, that came with coleslaw. The fish had absolutely no flavor to it.. I asked for melted butter… Which was definitely not melted butter… It was vegetable oil. My friend had the baked fish also and said that she had the same opinion… Absolutely no taste to it, and she also had the baked potato Which she said was cold. The salad bar was an up charge of four dollars… Which had lettuce, dressing, a plain tasting Generic cottage cheese, mushrooms… And that’s about it.

The waitress must be used to people complaining, because she Didn’t seem too surprised by it. Must’ve been the manager that came over then after her, this lady almost seemed offended that we did not like the baked fish. Asked if we wanted to talk to the cook.… ummmm I guess? But then when she went to get him, he had already left for the night…at 8:15pm and they’re open till 9…?

The whole thing was strange. The people at the table next to us said that the food used to be really really good and then something changed and now it’s rather disappointing. This was my first time going, but based on our experience, we would definitely not go back.

We used to come to The Broken Spur ALL the time. It was THE BEST place! We went in tonight for my Fiancé birthday dinner, besides the bartender everything else after that was not so good. My food was cold, my steak was supposed to be medium well it was red, sweet potatoes were cold, lobster was cold, our waitress never came to our table with our drinks we had to get them ourselves. It wasn't good! We loved going there 2022, 2023 now is not worth the money so sad.

Slow service fried cod and perch were very salty, crab cakes were over cooked , soup was suppose to be clam chowder...it was spicy and possibly oregano and basil...tasted nothing like clam chowder...saw waitress taking away soup cause gentleman said it was too spicy and a plate of breaded jumbo shrimp was also taken back , kitchen was very loud, waited for our check , waited for second drink, came in at 5 pm ish and didn't get done until 7:00 pm ish....not very crowded at all this was Sept 6 th Friday...we will not be back or recommend..
Chef came out to speak to gentlman with the soup and stated I'm not sure what happened but I don't eat clam chowder so I will have to talk to sous chef.....a chef should know what everything taste like that's on the menu ...Was very disappointed

First time eating at this place and was a little disappointed.
First off the service was slow, lots of running around but no one visited our table for 10 minutes. When we eventually ordered my drink took into the starter to get there. After we got the food, some of the food did not come like coleslaw and rye bread. Only to be told they don't do it anymore or not ready even though it lists it on the menu.
The fish was tasty and seasoned well. Sometimes too well as there was a whole garlic clove in the mashed potatoe.
We will not be doing here again, next time culvers for taste and better service. Where the menu does not lie.

Food was okay but the service is the worse. We waited for over40 minutes to get a waitress, the hostess was nice and tried to get us taken care of after she noticed we were seated for over 20 minutes with no water, menu or waitress. When they did take our order the waitress said they were out of all seafood so we ordered a chicken sandwich and a steak. This took at least 45 minutes. We even had to ask for a check and had to wait for that. The chef can by after another waitress called him because we complained and said we were leaving a bad review. We were there for over two hours for and average meal. Will not go back and we live in the area.

We have been coming here for a couple of years for fish fry. It used to be so good when Chef Tony was cooking. It was just right. Last night, it was overcooked and by the time we pulled all the excess batter off, there was very little fish. There is a new chef there now.

Me and my wife came in July 27th 2024.
We normally order.
The shaved prime rib sandwich and
the Walleye dinner
Which we did again to our horror and let me explain. The shave beef sandwich was half the size or even smaller than that. Compared to when chef tony made it. My wife's bottom bun was so soggy that she couldn't eat it or pick it up.
And she found only 3 mushrooms on the whole thing and sadly enough she couldn't even find the cheese and I'm telling you the last ones, that we ordered, (many times)we always took a picture of our plates because we couldn't believe how big it was. And used to make a joke that they used a 1/2 a loaf of French bread to make it and the cheese was like on a pizza. Okay, the walleye we live in Wisconsin. Walleye is the best fish around second to perch. Normally, it was PAN fried, flaky, big and beautiful and I gotta tell you when we asked the waitress, which was a fabulous lady, what he did to the walleye, she said rolling her eyes that he grilled it and whatever seasoning and slime, which my. Wife called it, that he had on the walleye was terrible tasting. It was the worst fish I have ever tasted in my life. And I'm 64 years old. My brother is on the walleye national fishing competition circuit. So I eat a lot of Walleye fish, and it was terrible to the point that I asked for a to go box, and I left it on the table. I should have sent it back and ordered something new. The potato came out fine. The vegetables would've been fine, but they were cold. And the sampler used to have herring on it. We don't eat it that much, but I'm telling you. It was the best herring I've ever tasted.
We bragged about the quality and quantity of the meals. To our family to our friends to our church body and to Facebook. I will be calling the manager on Tuesday.
Or maybe Mr. Bruner, because I was cheated and it was the disgusting meal which we used to love coming there. If it continues. I would never go back there again. And?

We have enjoyed the Friday fish fry a number of times but were disappointed the last time. The size of the baked cod was smaller and not as flavorful as previously. We also looked forward to the complimentary condiments of cheese curds, dip, crackers, and herring. Those little touches were what brought us back. Please bring this back.

We have been regulars for the Friday fish fry along with many friends and neighbors. What happened to the cheese curds, herring, cheese spread and crackers they would bring to the table? Also, we would all get the perch dinner that include 6 nice pieces of perch. Don't know if we'll be back, because it was something we looked forward to. Especially the perch dinner.
Menu changes are OK, but sometimes you need to stick with what's been working.

Frequently go here. Love Friday night fish fry perch is amazing!!! Only reason I couldn't provide five stars for this review is amazingly and very much so a non-typical experience I had to take my bill to the front desk to pay for it as I had already waited 10 minutes for my server to come after finishing our meal. Incredible experience and food. Table starters were garlic herb cheese, cheese curds, crackers and sardines. Also had pumpernickel bread. I got the burger which felt like half pound, the fries were excellent. Might have been the best French onion soup I've ever had, flavorful. The steaks aren't necessarily cheap but it was the best $14 burger I've ever had, and would have been happy paying $20.

Bartender, hostess and server were all very friendly. Our Oscar Ribeyes were perfect! The signature drinks we chose were tasty! The decor inside was perfect! There aren't a lot of decent sit-down restaurants in the area. This is one of the better ones, but that's not saying much. The place seemed a bit understaffed, and it took about 30 minutes for our group to get drinks. We had a larger table, so understandably, not all the food is going to come out at the same time, but some of the meals were sitting under the heat lamps a bit too long because a couple of us got burned by touching the plates. The food was ok, but it felt a bit overpriced for what you got. I ordered the boasted chicken (super dry) and ribs (those were alright).

Staff was very nice, but it wasn't the best experience.

Drinks are cheaper than most in the area. Before the meal they brought out crackers, pickled herring, dip and cheese curds. I love all their included appetizers. Food in this restaurant is fabulous. Cooked and seasoned to perfection. The hostess made a great effort to get us a table as we didn't have a reservation. The bartender was excellent as we enjoyed a cocktail while we waited. Our server on the other hand not so good. She must have wanted to be somewhere else because she didn't seem care about our table. After delivering our meals never returned to check on anything. Had go to bar area and as bartender for 2 cocktails which she made and delivered to our table. When she did return with the check I asked what happened to shrimp cocktail I ordered she said she must have forgotten about it but would go get it. My first experience here was with a group of 6 close friends and family. We went out on a very cold February Friday night, we were seated by the large fireplace and it was a perfect setting and warmed us up with delight. I mention the seating because the table was a perfect 6 seater. Not two wobbly tables pushed together and I appreciated that. In Wisconsin Friday night fish is almost a religion and their selection was surprising. As we sipped our real muddled Korbel Brandy Old Fashions mixed by Jill who is a delightful Mauston mixologist legend and sweetheart behind the bar. We reviewed the hard cover quality menus and prepared to order, just from the feel of the menu and the glance of the Scallop and Pork Belly apps I saw a couple enjoying at the bar on the way to our seat, I new we were in for a good time. Three ladies in our group had the beer battered Walleye filet special and it was a master piece! A huge and thick filet perfectly crispy breading sided with a sweet corn mix and potato and the unbelievably tasty crab corn chowder. Two in our group are a couple who shared a Ribeye and a large special salad. The steak was perfectly prepared and the presentation was on point! I had the Poor Man's Lobster special, a large piece of baked Cod with drawn butter and lemon prepared in a fashion I can only describe as YES PLEASE! We were all so pleased AND childishly giddy with the meal. I sound silly I know but it is such a happy moment to know I have a great restaurant in my town and don't have to travel to the Dells. If you can't tell I recommend a visit. I treated the group and paid the bill and have to say, I have spent more on just my wife and I at steakhouses in the Dells and not been this pleased. Our waitress Keri was an absolute pleasure and is a true professional. Definitely making this my go to spot in Mauston WI!

We celebrated our birthdays at The Broken Spur Steak and Seafood restaurant nestled inside The Lodge at Mauston for our second consecutive year and I think we might just need to make it a tradition come every December. Even though we arrived closer to the end of the night. we were still given a very hospitable experience. The restaurant has a relaxed, intimate vibe. The host, our waitress, and chef were all very personable, making rounds, and accommodations. A refreshing starter of cheese, crackers, & fish were complimentary provided; and although very delightful, we came ready to annihilate and ordered the Onion Rings as well. They were lightly fried, yet had a very nice crisp to them. Our entrees came with soup or salad and also dinner rolls. Off the menu, we selected the New York Strip, baked potato and side salad. And off the specials, we chose a cup of Clam Chowder to accompany the Pan-Seared Walleye with potatoes and asparagus. Everything was so savory and flavorful that we had to contain ourselves in order to have room for the decadent Chocolate Cake we ended with.

I cannot wait for our return.

Thank you for memorable night!

As local people we try to patronize local establishments. Tonight was very disappointing and this makes two times in a row of a bad experience. Tonight we arrived and put our names in to be seated, went to the bar to wait. We were told 25-30 minutes. Then we noticed folks who came in after us seated. When we checked we were told that it would be another 20 minutes, making our wait for a table more than an hour,
while others were seated before us. I think an hour, in our area is quite a long wait. We did not stay and left to go elsewhere. Last time we were seated fairly quickly, but waited more than an hour for our food. Both on Saturday nights. Not sure if that’s the issue or something else, but clearly something needs adjusting. We also realize that finding help is tough right now.

We came here because this place made it in the "Best" of paper. However, this place was hardly that. The service was slow (I had to get up twice to get attention. One to order drinks and the other when we were ready to pay our bill). The crackers and variety of dips that come with the meal was not great. Ritz crackers and some disgusting smoked trout or something? The dinner rolls looked like something that came in a dinner roll bag from Walmart. We ordered the bruschetta (it was mediocre). Our dinner salads were good, but again nothing special. We ordered them with ranch dressing because that is the only one made in house. The other dressings are premade. We ordered a bloody mary and a cocktail off of the drink menu (that we also had to ask for). The cocktail was decent and the bloody mary wasn't. I ordered salmon for dinner and my husband ordered ribs. I could have cooked the salmon better myself at home. Hardly any flavor or seasoning. The carrots looked they were frozen baby carrots? My husband said that he didn't even want to finish the ribs. He ordered it with fingerlings and carrots. We left all the carrots on our plates. One taste of them was enough. Honestly, if this place were cheap I wouldn't have minded a wildly mediocre meal. However, if I am paying $100+ for dinner then I expect quality. We won't be back. Save your money and go to a place where the food quality matches the sticker price.

I only gave 3 stars because the waiter was great! Some of the food was over and undercooked. The food had no seasoning at all! Wasted so much money!

Went while visiting friends this place has a real quaint charm about it, started with all the good stuff on the table cheese spread was great put mine on my roll which elevated its flavor, got the bacon cheddar asparagus soup which I could have sat and had all night, if I hadn’t ordered the hands down best walleye I have ever eaten, our waitress Alexis was kind and courteous and quick to refill our drinks, excellent staff they really made you feel like they wanted you there. Thank you for a great experience, I really want to try the hotel now too.

I travel in my work and I schedule my work in order to eat here and stay at the hotel that is attached to the restaurant. Great steak and seafood and deep fried cheese curds. Great staff as well. Do yourself a favor and take a trip and eat and stay here.

4 of us for dinner. Prime rib was tough, crab legs over cooked and chewy. Walleye was good. Filet was small for price. Crab legs were the spe ial, I made the mistake thinking it would be a lower price. Wrong! $85. If o knew ahead of time I would not have ordered them. Place is small and dark
Our waitress was outstanding.

Had an amazing time and pretty good dinner last night. This is definitely a place to go for location rather than actual food quality. The staff was AMAZING! Jill, Alexis and Carry (sorry if I misspelled any names) were all made sure we had the greatest time.

The onion soup was my absolute favorite part of the meal.

Absolutely amazing steaks and lobster. Drinks were well poured. Fast and friendly service with a smile. Great teamwork amongst the staff. Tony even came to the table and spoke with my husband. We've now found our special date night place. We've been searching for one since moved here in late September of 21.
Will definitely return.

Disappointed with my steak. More grissle on my plate than what was edible. Not fat, grissle. Embarrassing to keep spitting it out on my spoon and putting it on my plate. Great flavor though. The rest of the meal was wonderful but I paid $$$ for the steak not the sides.

We are almost always lucky enough to get Tiffany as our waitress. She is so great and one of the reasons we keep going back. Would be 5 stars but the prices on some of the foods just aren't worth it but for the most part our family loves going to The Broken Spur on an almost weekly basis!

Having a summer cottage in Mauston has been challenging as the area is a little short on cool bars and great restaurants... Our luck changed last weekend when we tried The Broken Spur not only on Friday evening but for a return visit on Saturday. The first night we arrived at 4:45 PM and were told there was an hour wait... Really at 4:45 PM?? We went to the bar and ordered cocktails from bartender Jill... Great drinks and when we shared our concern over the hour wait, Jill disappeared and returned with the hostess who seated us immediately... Yeah Jill!! The wait staff (Kiki) was very accommodating and had a great sense of humor. She delivered a small tray of local cheese /crackers and a few other goodies which along with our cocktails kept us busy until the dinners arrived (it was a bit of a wait but worth it). Over the two visits in two days, we had the chicken and ribs, the salmon and the prime rib and loved it all along with some great crab bisque soup and fresh salads. I hesitate to recommend the Broken Spur because we will never get a table once the word gets out.

I do not give reviews very often, but today I believe The Broken Spur gave me a reason to. I thought the entire experience here was quite enjoyable and relaxing. However it did take a while to get seated. But that was because they seem short staffed tonight. It was quite impressive to see the waitress making rounds at all the other tables whilst keeping us well taken care of. The steaks were cooked to perfection! Exactly how I like it and very tender! Definately will be coming here again! Loved it 😁 Great job chefs, and our waitress Ashley was incredible! Thank you all so much!

We showed up to have Dinner but the dining room was full, they were definitely over the 25% capacity. Decided to wait and have a drink while we waited, the Bartender was rude and inattentive, older lady. There were dirty glasses everywhere! I mean A LOT. We felt bad seeing the waitresses running back and forth trying to keep up with just a couple of them on duty... on a Saturday night. We ended up not eating there. Thought this place would have been better....

The food was amazing. I had the baked french onion soup and the smoked ribs and my husband had the salad and the 14oz. ribeye steak. The soup on it's own is a meal and I would drive the 2.5 hour trip again just to eat that soup. The death by chocolate cake dessert is delicious. Our server, Kari, was friendly, had a good sense of humor, and made the meal worth every penny.

Service was slow. They forgot the steak for the order and once it did come it was overdone and not 32oz. Waitress did not check in on us. Waited 20 minutes for the bill after finally asking for it. Would be a better experience with a different waitress who provides customer service.

Service was extremely slow. We were treated as if we were peasants. They complete forgot about the "32oz" steak. When it finally came to the table it was over cooked and tasted like biting into a block of blue cheese. After we were done eating our waitress walked by our table over 20 times without any acknowledgement.

We decided to give this place another shot and boy are we glad we did. Much more prompt service! The freaking bruschetta is THE best I've ever had! Definitely coming back for that! The prime was okay, a bit overseasoned but good. Salads were great, the dinner rolls are soooo good! Love the cheese n crackers too!! We were only able to eat half our meal, so we enjoyed prime n eggs for breakfast
