I got the avocado toast and i could not eat it. It had honey and peppers which is a strange combination. Loved the place but they should look into changing this recipe to something more simple!

Damn delicious breakfast w/cinnamon roll.
But I don't understand the comment made later when I grabbed a bag of coffee beans and paid for them and was asked "No Tip" and do you want them ground?

One always feels comfortable and relaxed when they are at City Market in the cafe. The taste of the bakery goods is far, far superior to other bakeries that I know of in Milwaukee.... especially the French Bread Boules and the Peanut butter cookies. The service is superb. I also have so much respect for the way this cafe managed to stay open and afloat during the COVID epidemic. I say, thank God for The City Market Cafe and Bakery!

First time trying this place today. I tagged along with the kids to meet a friend and she recommended this place. The menu has something for everyone. I tried the Buffalo chicken wrap. It was delicious! Prices are pretty on point with the norm. Nothing too crazy expensive. You order at the counter and tell them what table you’ll be at. They bring everything out to you. I would definitely go back and try other things on the menu.

I placed a pickup order for a mango orange smoothie. It was ready and still cold when I got there. Probably kept in a cooler. It was only $6 which I feel is a great price for 16 oz. The guy that grabbed it for me was nice. The vibe looks nice in there. Looks really chill maybe I’ll stop by for actual food one day. The deserts in the display case looked good.

I used to love City Market Cafe.
Now that Whitefish Bay took over they have gone down hill

I am back to loving the City Market.
The staff has a turn around and are friendly, helpful, and get things right.

I love sitting and getting my own coffee because I drink a lot and I don't have to wait for a waitress. Plus I can get some coffee to go.

I wish I could give this place 5 stars. I’ve been coming here for many years, but lately I’ve noticed a significant decline in customer service. For some reason ordering and paying for your meal in person has been a strange and rather unpleasant experience. They always seem to be annoyed or not in such a great mood to talk to other people. And it is really hard to tell why.

The food is good overall, and the space with its interior are comfortable.

The interaction part is what made me stop coming here as often as I used to.

Atmosphere is great here. Tables are spaced out well where you feel private enough. Their food is extremely bland, but the baked goods are nice. Their coffee is really good. Not overly sweet. Customer service is great. I’d just say if you’re a person of any ethnic background that eats super seasoned food, the food here is not for us. That being said, they do have a ton of vegan options-even a build your own sandwich.

I just paid $6.19 + $1 tip for a small cinnamon hot chocolate. Noticed how light the cup was when I picked it ip so I took off the top. Grabbed a cardboard sleeve intending to scoop out the foam part on top. Scoop after scoop after scoop after scoop of foam went into the trash. HALF THE CUP WAS FILLED WITH FOAM! I only got about 4oz of hot chocolate. What a rip off. I took video so will upload it if i can.

The girl who made it offered to make a second one but why bother? So i can have a new cup of foam? I asked her to fill it with hot water instead.

Diverse offerings, and food that is on the high end of the semi-fast food spectrum. Orders are placed at the main desk and waitstaff delivers to your table. Breakfast, lunch, and dessert are offered. Both indoor and outdoor dining areas are available. Also serves a limited amount of alcoholic beverages. Clean, modern looking bathrooms. No parking lot, but lots of nearby street parking is available. Prices are appropriate.

So when we first entered the establishment, I was really impressed with the ambiance and atmosphere of the restaurant.

It had a cozy feel and was very contemporary. Love It! It gives you that coffee shop feel where you can get your favorite chicken and waffles.

So we ordered our food and everything was good overall. There were a few nitpicking things, such as I didn't like the cashier's attitude. I thought it came across a bit dismissive and snoodie. I must admit that was off-putting.

But the reason I gave it 5 stars 🌟 because of how they handled a mistake with the food. They made a mistake and took full responsibility, and made things right.

I really appreciated the adulting and the good business sense. Their food was really delicious, and I will return in the future, God willing.

Always enjoy their soups and sandwiches this time I tried the angus burger no bun no tomato and when it came I asked for some mayo or aoli they said I had to pay I did it was an extra dollar. Though that was a shame that they up charge for that and then he brought what looked like two teaspoons worth in a cup. The cashier was nice but whomever he asked was the one who decided this. It was Thursday afternoon we walked over from next door yoga place after class. It had lots of young kids 9-11 years old … by the condiments maybe 9 or ten all getting ice waters but not eating there all with one adult. Nice that they support the community this way. My friend’s salad looked great large and fresh. I asked for a roll and the guy said he gave it to my friend with hers I thought that came with hers so I didn’t order another when we were at the counter.

Everything I ordered was REALLY tasty. I can be kind of hard to please, but everything was made really well. I was especially delighted by the chicken butternut and mushroom soup. After riding the Oak Leaf Trail, I stopped at this cozy little place for a much-needed break.

Lovely decor, friendly staff, and a welcoming atmosphere help set this place apart!

The cranberry nut scone was tasty and paired well with the decaf blend. I appreciated that you get a self-serve mug when you order 'for here' drinks, and there was a great selection of non-dairy creamers (almond milk) and natural sweeteners like honey. I'll be back!

We were on vacation from Denmark, visiting family in Milwaukee, and went to this establishment on August 4th, 2023.
A US family member requested to get a treat for our two kids, at this specific cafe.

He went to the counter and ordered two cookies, - and when he asked for two separate bags (one for each kid) - the two young girls behind the counter, rolled their eyes at each other, and whispered something, making his request seem inconvenient/out of place to them. I know he visits this cafe often, and was appauled by the rude attitude and lack of professional interaction, especially with other costumers in the cafe.
In general we found Americans to be great hosts, - but here I felt uncomfortable with the employees.

I grabbed the wrong coffee order by mistake and informed the staff about it which everyone seemed fine, then another staff member came over and started pointing fingers at us and making a huge deal over a small mistake. Then they got the customer involved and make the whole experience very uncomfortable. Awful experience, Plus the tables were sticky and gross. Honestly would not recommend this place

The good: the ambience is great. Very nice outdoor seating and cool design inside.

The not so good: Service was not great. Staff we interacted with were disinterested and lacked the Midwestern hospitality common at most Milwaukee area establishments. The food was fine if not over priced.

As much as it was a cool location the lackluster service is enough to keep me from going back.

I had a bad experience here. I usually don’t like to leave bad reviews, but this experience was so bad. So many terrible things, the quantity of food was small, no taste at all. My coffee had flecks of coffee grounds. The tables were sticky and gross. My bread was hard and old. I had to get my own coffee and water. THEN when we were done eating WE (the customer) had to clear our own dishes from the table?!? I felt like I was working, no customer service at all. We paid ahead of time, the audacity to ask for a tip, a tip for what? I should be tipped, I did all the work. I’m never coming back.

I was a first time visitor and I'd heard great things about the food. For a first time guest, it was a little confusing. It LOOKS like they have table service and they kind of have bits of it. You order at the counter, find a seat, and then your food is brought to. The menu is fairly substantial so counter service is a bit daunting. But, after reading the large version of the menu off to one side, you attempt to get someone's attention (don't give up, the food is worth it), you then go find yourself a seat. Oops, wait! Did you order a can of soda? Again, a newbie would not automatically think it was self-serve from the cooler behind them....but it is. Grab one on your way to your seat.
Service is lightning fast. It's not particularly friendly, more inoffensively neutral.
And it seemed reasonably priced. I had the veggie stack sandwich.

I woke up this morning craving something warm and yummy and decided to treat myself! I haven’t been to City Market in a while, so I figured why not! I walked in, several people behind the counter, literally staring at me, not one of them side hello. I stared at the menu for a few minutes and still not one greeting, so I left. It’s unfortunate as I can walk here from my apt and often stop in the summer on my walks to the lake, but I won’t be back. A simple hello goes a long way.

As a vegan, I noticed they do have a few seemingly vegan items on their menu, but you have to ask about cheese because sometimes it's a hidden ingredient. Like with the Tomato Artichoke Basil noodle bowl, it has pesto in it, which is normally made with cheese. So I asked the cashier about it and she pulled out an ingredient binder and tried to look it up, but had no success finding it in the book. So I ordered the Portabella Quinoa bowl instead and specifically asked for no cheese, just in case. It was quite tasty, but definitely check your teeth after eating it 'cuz the quinoa likes to hide in between. As far as Covid safety measures, no one is wearing masks and that includes the staff (see photo) and the customers are socially distancing themselves. It doesn't appear the City Market is encouraging safe practices on their own except for a lone bottle of hand sanitizer at the register. So while I'd love to give this place 4 stars for food, I have to knock a star off because of the lax safety precautions.

City Market Cafe in Shorewood is a place where anyone and everyone is welcomed to come have a cup of coffee or a bite to eat. Since coming here I have felt nothing but welcomed by the staff; Mario, Serafina, Nick, to name a few. The roasted cranberry turkey is a 'must try' sandwich. It was my first time coming here and certainly my last. I ordered Mac and cheese and they charged me for chicken in it as well (I never asked for chicken in my Mac and cheese). I then ordered a chicken side salad (thinking it was a salad with lettuce in it), I asked the cashier what was all in the salad and he said “I don’t know it’s my second day here”. I then asked the dressing options for the “salad” and he said it was “predressed”. I got my food, was way over charged, and the chicken salad was not an actual salad like the cashier had basically said it was. The manager Sarafina was extremely rude, and did nothing about it. It’s not the cashiers fault, they shouldn’t be putting 2nd day workers on the register if they don’t know the menu yet. All the workers just stared at me for being upset, but when your overcharged and pay $20 for a meal, the workers should at least be able to clarify what’s in the food when a customer asks while ordering.

Breakfast meals are some of the best around the Northside of Milwaukee. Unfortunately, on this week Wednesday at the Shorewood location, the employees did not seem happy nor did they act like they cared about the needs of the customers. I will go back again next week and see if they were just having a bad day or if it is a cultural thing. The customers on the patio act like they love their community and treat strangers with smiles and pleasant attitudes.

This place is great, especially for a breakfast or lunch meeting.

It's almost like a local Panera-like place. But, with more unique options and a more "restauranty" feel. Yes, I made up that word. It's not like a normal sit down restaurant, but it's not quite like a fast casual type food place, either.

Great spot to meet a friend or coworker for a bite, coffee or pastry.

I really like croissants here. They have done a great job with social distancing but still making it a place where you could go work if needed. However, some of the pastries and little underdone sometimes. This could just mean I've gotten a bad batch of blueberry muffins the 3-4 times I've gone. Definitely would recommend going and trying other items though!

Update 3/27/2021 After working by here and eating here often. I am sad to say the food just not as good as I hoped. The mac and cheese is often gritty and so are the cookies. I know a lot of my coworkers like it though but it is just not my style.

The food was delicious! I could tell the difference between the frappé from them and a place like McDonald's. The breakfast was unlike anything I've had. The potatoes were a blend of russet, sweet, purple and blue. I'd recommend it. Very diet friendly and filling.
I'd move to the East side just to revisit.

Multiple customers eating and working on laptops inside with no masks! Completely unacceptable during this time. I will not support an irresponsible business.

Today our staff at Lake Bluff Dental in Shorewood ordered lunch from Shorewood's City Market Café. Starting with the phone call to order, the young lady was so sweet and professional. Not to mention, very patient. Next, Our food was promptly ready at 12:45, as requested. Then, we received our food order for 8, with each item labeled in such a cute manner for each staff member. Finally, everything was simply amazing. Not one mistake and the food was fantastic.
As a fellow Shorewood business, we thank you and solute the fantastic job you're all doing over there!! We look forward to ordering from you again!! Lake Bluff Dental #supportlocal

Had a wonderful experience here with some tea and a cup of chili. Josh took my order and was very friendly. Jonny brought out my order and shared great conversation. They deserve a raise!
