The highly desireable location means that Cooper's Tavern will always be jam-packed, no matter what the experience is like. We recently visited during a peak time. The wait at around 1:00 on a Saturday was over 90 minutes. When we did get our seats, it was just deafening inside - hard to order because you couldn't hear the server over the din. The menu runs Midwest gastro pub, but the kitchen didn't seem to have much pride the day we were there. Ruben had about 2 ounces of meat, a few strands of sauerkraut - truly a paltry sandwich. I ask you, how hard is it to make a great Ruben?

Super disappointed with my last visit to Coopers Tavern. It was on a Sunday evening, the place was probably less than 2/3 full. The bartender asked what kind of beer I was looking for, I said an unfiltered wheat. I might be wrong, but any bartender should have some sense of what an unfiltered wheat is, spotted cow, Blue Moon are the ubiquitous versions of that now, another name would be hefeweissen. What I would have preferred was something like a Paulauner, Ayinger, Hacker Pshorr. But really any unfiltered wheat. He said they didn't have any, he ended up pouring me an Ayinger (Yes, exactly what I was looking for but he had no idea what it was). After looking at the menu just now, I think there are about four beers that qualify as filtered wheats. We then ordered fries and our main course at the same time, since we had his attention we figured we better order both the same time since we didn't know when he might circle back. When we placed our order he asked if we wanted them both at the same time or the fries is an appetizer, we asked for the fries first and for the main course to come later, we were sharing. Not too long later, as I was talking to my dining partner facing each other at the bar, from out of nowhere a plate of fries was thrust between us at face level and placed between us. No, excuse me, here are your fries or served from the side, one minute we're talking to each other and the next minute we both had our noses almost taken off by a plate full of fries (dramatized for effect). We both looked at each other like, that was weird. As we began to sort out munching away on our fries, within approximately 2 minutes the main course showed up. I had mentioned to the bartender, I thought we were going to get these spaced out, all he said was, well I guess the kitchen is running ahead. If that's the case, then why did you ask us if we wanted it earlier or not? I'm assuming he didn't note it in the ordering system or the kitchen didn't care that we wanted one initially as an appetizer and then later the main course. General observation, the staff was standing around quite a bit, shooting the breeze, joking around. I don't know if management was missing this day or what exactly was going on. We were there about 7:30, not super late, I don't know when they stop serving food but perhaps everybody had already slipped it into neutral and had one foot out the door. My previous experience at Cooper's Tavern was quite a few years ago at this point, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I understand how difficult staffing must be these days and training must be a never-ending process. I don't know when I'll make it back, but it's not high on my priority list at this point. It's disappointing, it's a neat place. there are just so many other restaurants near the Capitol....

Not a bad place, but we did wait a very long time for a waiter and our food. Also waited for dessert. Thursday night so not busy. Food was good, not extraordinary but ok. Wife had turkey sandwich and i had a burger. Not a destination but ok.

What a great patio to spend a fall afternoon. I'm from out of town and was looking for some good pub food and I found it. Great turkey sandwich, and probably the best balsamic vinaigrette I have ever tasted. Very good beer selection. Service was so kind and patient, special thanks to Maggie amd Cheyanne!

We were seated outside after about a 30 minute wait, granted it's Labor Day but so many tables were open outside for so long!! I don't understand why it took so long to get seated! Everything on the menu is incredibly bougie - their 'frites' are just French fries. Food was decent, nothing special - I ordered the Coopers Burger which was pretty good, but the side salad was just a pile of lettuce with some mayonnaise or something. Our waitress (I think her name was Kiki) wasn't exactly rude, but one could hardly call her polite. She was very brusque and it felt almost as though we were an inconvenience to her?? The literal only reason we came to this place at all was because we had been given a $50 gift certificate to Coopers Tavern, so we figured might as well knock it out. But lo and behold, when we tried to redeem said certificate, our waitress took one look at it and said in a tone of "you're such an idiot/stop wasting my time", 'This is for Coopers Hawk, the winery across town. We're Coopers Tavern'. It was totally an honest mistake on our part, but she wasn't very understanding - let me be clear I'm not saying she should have given us a discount or anything, but she could have and should have been less blunt with us. I think next time we'll just skip this place and go somewhere else.

We sat outside on the "patio" which we were told is not dog friendly "due to health regulations". They must be the only facility governed by that said regulation because every other patio seating in the entire country (USA) is ok with dogs outside. Luckily my dog is service so we could sit there.
Food was ok. Nothing special. Service was mediocre.
Atmosphere was not good because of the homeless person sleeping right next to the entrance who smelled and had soiled her "bedding" that also smelled not sure if this is something normal in Madison or not but not very appetizing to us visitors.

Great location. Indoor and outdoor seating options. Great menu. Friendly server. Service a little slow. Poutine disappointing (dry unsalted fries, one big lump of cheese making sharing difficult, not enough gravy) but the rest of the food was enjoyed.

I was so excited to finally experience Cooper's Tavern with a gift card I received. Reading positive reviews and seeing how busy it was, my hopes were really high for a fantastic meal. We sat outside to avoid a wait to be seated. We started with some good cheese curds, which were a promising start. Isabelle was our server and she explained some items on the menu, which I had questions about. For my main, I decided on the pork belly mac and cheese (without blue cheese) after much deliberation. Sadly, after a rather long wait, the dish was a major letdown. It was surprisingly bland, and even the three pork cubes on top lacked any flavor. Despite being very hungry, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. It's a shame when expectations don't meet reality. I explained to Isabelle when she noticed that I wasn't eating my food that I was dissatisfied, before walking away, she shrugged and said, "Well, it's mac and cheese."

Fish and chips were good. Breading was flavorful and made up for a bit of a mute fish experience which I believe is to be expected with whitefish. Fries weren’t great but a little salt made them just fine. Excellent selection on tap.

We rented the upstairs room at Cooper's to host a small wedding reception brunch and could not have been happier with the planning, execution, and service for our event! The events coordinator Katie was very responsive and easy to work with. The food and drinks were great and I was surprised by how pretty the upstairs room is having never been to Cooper's before. It has a huge picture window with a beautiful tree and view of the capitol. I would also like to give a special thanks to the red-haired server who was so kind and helpful (I'm so sorry I didn't get her name!). She went above and beyond to provide excellent service and made some really great non-alcoholic cocktails for some of our guests who don't drink. Thank you!

Great tavern with a nice menu and draft beer selection.
We went on the weekend and brunch menu was in effect, so I tried the breakfast burrito. It was delicious with just the right amount of cheese topping. I did think halfway thru that maybe having the cheese topping dip versus smothered would make it easier to eat it as a handheld, but was great regardless.
Their kids menu was also a good variety and very affordable versus other nearby places.
Our server was very friendly and prompt. I’d definitely return.

We went to Coopers Tavern after attending a wedding vow renewal ceremony at the Capitol. The upstairs reception room was perfect for our group of around 40. The food was excellent and we enjoyed the beef, salmon, and chicken as well as sides. It was served buffet style, and the food was all on point. The second floor was right sized for the group. The bar served a nice selection of cocktails, wine, and beer. They were exceptionally accommodating for our parents who needed assistance getting to the second floor via their handicap elevator. We fully enjoyed our time at Coopers Tavern looking out at the Capitol in Madison! Thank you!

I got the cheese curds and the sliders. The curds had no flavor, even with the sauce provided. The sliders were much the same. I feel like either the cheese or sauce was missing. The meat itself needed some salt too. The fries were cooked well, but again, had no seasoning. I went during lunch on a weekday, so perhaps it wasn't the best time, but considering the price, I expected more.

Our office orders lunch from this restaurant from time to time. The food is always delicious, well prepared, and flavorful. (It's not super important, but having everyone's names on their order helps us tremendously! Some restaurants don't do that and makes it a little more difficult to get everyone's food to them at the office. It's the little things!) Everyone there is always very kind and I highly recommend stopping in for a drink and bite, especially during the warmer seasons.

Really thankful for the evening. We had hoped to go to a specific downtown Steak place at 5:10pm on New Years Eve, thinking we'd be able to grab a spot at the bar. Fortunately, they were packed, so we set out and came upon Cooper's. They had a table available, so we sat down. Had great service (I forgot his name, I'm sorry) we had the Shrimp Risotto and 3 PC Fish, along with perfectly-made Hendrick's Gimlets. What could have been an anxious evening (no reservations) turned out to be really nice and memorable because we walked into Cooper's Tavern Thank you and Happy New Year #2025!

After not eating there in years, I’ve been twice in the last month. First for dinner, which was good. I had a tofu dish. The tofu was excellent! Lightly breaded and well seasoned. The rest of the dish was fine… the rice was one big clump and excessive. They have a nice selection of NA beers. Brooklyn IPA is the best approximation of an ipa I’ve had to date. I was jealous of my dining companions’ pretzel buns. They reportedly the chicken sandwich and portobello were perfect. Frites were perfect.
Next visit was in the private room for a celebration. If you don’t know this, Coopers has a really nice private room you can rent above the space. Incredible views of the capital, full bar, etc. The crab cakes were excellent. Seriously cooked perfectly. Crudités was nice - heirloom carrots, watermelon radishes, broccolini. Cheese curds and pretzel bites were ok.. the challenges of serving buffet style maybe? Curds were a little damp but good flavor. Pretzel bites were doughy and denser than you would want. The dipping sauces were excellent. The desserts were reportedly really good. Guinness cake and chocolate chip cookies.

The Coopers Tavern, by far their fried cheese curds, were the best. I gave them 5 stars for the cheese curds and Adams soup. My 3 steak sliders were not what I expected. The patties were tender but very bland even with the caramelized onions on top. It needed a little salt. The pretzel buns were good, soft, and fresh. The Adam's soup was delicious, creamy, and flavorful. I could eat a big bowl of it with the cheese curds and would be satisfied for the entire day. My husband's kimchi smashed burger was delightful, very tast. The kimchi was delicious!!! Service was fast, fully happy with the quick service since I was starving. Next time I'm in Madison, I will dine at Coopers again.

Stopped in for lunch on a weekday. Nice room. Soccer on the tv’s but nothing loud or distracting. Ordered the Kimchi burger with fries. Good burger. Juicy & flavorful. Fries were a bit over cooked but the serving size (not too much or too few) was right on in my opinion. Lots of good looking items on the menu too.
I’ll be back.

A small group of us met here Friday night for date night. They offer indoor and outdoor seating with a view of the capital directly across the street. I got the turkey sandwich and my husband got the fish and chips. We both loved our choices. The fish was very Crispy and the turkey sandwich was filling. The waitress was knowledgeable on the beer menu and was able to help me choose one to suit my taste. The food was great, but the service was slow so we almost missed our show. I suggest arriving early if you have somewhere to be afterwards. Otherwise, we'd definitely eat here again!

Food was very good. Cheese curds were very flavorful, poutine was good albeit the cheese on it was clearly melted after adding the gravy rather than with the gravy which made the cheese more of a glob, and the fried fish was top tier with the fries done correctly and tartare sauce very good. My party said the kimchi smash burger and pork belly Mac n cheese were very delicious. Staff were very friendly but very busy and waits were longer than expected. Overall a good experience and would recommend.

Shoutout to:
1/Andie at the bar for her great local beer recommendations :)
2/Salomi at the restaurant, who was quick to get our order in before the kitchen shut for the night!
Excellent service all around! Sit outside if you can - you have a good view of the Capitol whilst enjoying some delicious sliders and local brews.

We Came here for our anniversary brunch. Irish egg entree was excellent, as was tomato herb soup and grilled cheese on gluten-free focaccia bread. Felt very cared for by staff.

I had the pork tenderloin which was "Mexican style". Could cut it with a fork, amazing flavor, overall, an excellent entree. The bed of Mexican corn and baby potatoes were great, just enough bite to fit the plate. They also had 3.5 dark beers on tap (Guinness only gets 0.5 in my book). Bartender and server were great, both accommodating and knowledgeable about their food and drink. Casual place, with an upscale feel. Great overall experience.

What a great experience! Staff was so accommodating to us and our fussy baby who was too hot outside, they offered us an inside table, presented delicious food, beer and wine and generous service and care.
We will certainly be back to enjoy another meal and say hello to our amazing server Nancy.
