While up in this neck of the woods I was hoping to find a nice place for whitefish. I succeeded! This was a very cozy spot, with excellent service and a great fish fry!

My family has a wonderful experience here. The chef and service were very friendly, the food was delicious with gracious portion, and the ambiance was really nice. They also have helped PAWS for animal rescue donation 🐾

We loved the curry rice, grilled whitefish & vegetables, and trout sandwich!

This is an addendum to my prior review which is old as they were still in Cornucopia. We went 2 nights ago for the Friday fish dinner again (we go pretty much every year). The good thing is they're done with road work in Washburn so you can actually get to the restaurant without going through the construction site. But, the food quality has gone down and they're clearly in need of a lot more help in the kitchen. The fish dinner is no longer all you can eat although it's only $5 to get an extra fillet which is cheap. However, the potatoes (french fries and smashed were not crisp) and we were there for almost an hour before our meals came (we had gotten the bruschetta as an appetizer which was definitely not what we were expecting but was pretty good although the table next to us were raving about it). The appetizer came after about 15 minutes but actual meal took 60. There were no baked goods and no dessert. The young people in the front of the house were fine.

Definitely go for the Friday fish fry. It's not just deep fried whitefish. You can get it pan fried and trout pan fried or deep fried. Their fish is from Halvorsen's (go there for the smoked trout). The fried Brussel sprouts were great too. My son said they were the best he's had (he's 12 so that's high praise).
We were there again this year and it's worth the drive from Bayfield. I got the all you can eat trout pan fried again and, while I was pretty full, had to get a second piece which was huge. Definitely get the smashed potatoes. My husband got the lamb chops.

This was not our first dining experience at the fat radish, but will probably be our last. We have had hit and miss experiences with both food and service, but in 2024 it seemed that the move to Washburn had included improvements on both fronts. Sadly, last night proved Otherwise. While we waited for a table at the bar, it took over 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us and the bartender then stop taking our order multiple times to divert to other tasks. Once she managed to take our order, it took her over 20 minutes to make three drinks one at a time very slowly. The drinks were not very tasty and the drink menu overwhelmingly relied on vodka and syrups leaving few cocktails on the menu. When we were finally seated at a table, we waited for a server for sometime. The water in our niece jar glasses tasted a bleach. The server who eventually arrived was rude and did not tell us what the special was without being asked if one existed. We then waited for over an hour for our food while our salad plate sat uncleared, and no one came to see if we needed more water or wish to order Another drink. The food itself was acceptable, but hardly worth the elevated prices. The vegetables in one dish appeared to come from a bag in their shape and texture. Every step of the meal was slow, not in a leisurely, generous and paste way, but in a sense of abandonment. The prices are high, but the quality and service hardly merit such prices. Even when we received the check, it sat uncollected for nearly half an hour before we finally went to the front to pay so that we could escape. The fat radish does not appear to care about its customers’ experience. It is a start contrast to Good Thyme, which offers outstanding food and service in a truly welcoming and vibrant atmosphere at similar prices.

We were fortunate to get a perfectly timed reservation. We enjoyed the Mediterranean Lamb Chops, Korean Flank Steak, Fish Tacos, All Meat pizza, and the Drop of Jupiter cocktail. While all were delicious, the Fried Brussel Sprouts appetizer may have been the favorite.

YUM!! We stopped for lunch at this cute, comfortable cafe. The decor is eclectic and rustic. Our server was so friendly and helpful. The Black Market Curry Bowl (with chicken) was wonderful - it’s probably enough for two. Beautiful curry flavor and mild spice, but needed a little salt IMO. The Cuban sandwich was out of this world! Soup of the day was chicken vegetable and so delicious.

We wanted to love this place! Farm to table, slow eating, great atmosphere… but unfortunately, everything fell pretty short. They were out of half of their appetizers, the chops were cooked so unevenly (jaw workout), the salad dressing was basically all sesame oil, and it was so understaffed, I felt bad for our waiter. I don’t typically mind a cozy restaurant, but you couldn’t even walk in between the tables - there wasn’t a good flow. We were so bummed and had really wanted a good experience. We had heard so many good things!

Had an incredible first experience at the Fat Radish. Great food, service and memories. Our server Sara, gave a wonderful orientation on food allergies, which was very important to my family and I. We had a 13 person table with kids, we must have been a sight. But, food was super fresh, perfect temperature and really flavorful. I will be back my only problem is there were 12 other dishes at my table I wanted to eat as well as mine! The Korean Steak was great! Thanks for a great dinner.

I'm confused by the food that shows up in other people's pictures. It's like we were not given a menu with those options or something. I see all of these amazing looking dishes which is why we went, but did not see any of them on the menu.

The food was ok. Nothing special.
Service was slow and awkward. You could tell they were one server down or something.

We are staying in the area for a couple of days and this restaurant was recommended by our host. We were able to be seated right away with a party of 6.
We started off with the spicy crab cakes and the Calamari. Oh my goodness these were delicious.
Our kids ordered the pizza and mac and cheese and they enjoyed them as well.
My husband and I ordered the Trio to share and the ravioli. The tenderloin and the salmon was just divine.
Definitely an amazing first stop in our Washburn stay!

My wife and I were struck by how cute the interior was, but were blown away by the food. We got the crab cakes, soup, ravioli, and french cassoulet. All of it was divine. Be brave and get something fun from their menu and you will not regret it. Best food I've had out in months.

BRING CASH FOR TIP! There was no option for a tip on the bill but a jar out front for cash. We had to visit an ATM across the street to give them what we thought was well deserved.

Gave the wrong dessert to go, we got orange ginger cake instead of rhubarb custard. Called and told them once we got home, they refused to comp for the wrong dessert and our waiter didn't even remember us being there <40 minutes after we left. He then told us he wouldn't give us a refund because he gave us large pieces of cake, and that even though we ordered custard he thought we had an agreement that we actually wanted the first thing on the wall (??). For over $100 for 2 ppl i would hope for better customer service.

Delicious, real food (check out the Rey Burger!) with a bunch of gluten free (favorite: tacooos) and vegan options. Amazing desserts (favorite: hand pies 🤩) at a really reasonable price. The mocktails are too good. All of the staff are great; David is fantastic and super suave.

They also wrap up things really well for take-out and picnics. All in all just a really solid choice for a date, family date, or any type of night out.

We came for lunch in April 2025. We got the fish fry special, with hand cut fries. One meal was pan seared and the other was fried. Both were delicious, as was the creme brulee. The service was very friendly and we really liked the place. We didn't know Washburn had such good restaurants.

Food is always fabulous. My fave is the vegetable curry. You can tell the chef knows what they're doing. One of those places you always talk about when you say, "I don't mind paying a little extra as long as the food is worth it. " I don't even mind the drive from Ashland to get here, just keep on coming back & getting surprised by something wonderful. Oh, if you've never been to Washburn, the people are friendly & helpful. It's very quaint & the lake is gorgeous, if you want activities check out The Club. Enjoy!

I highly recommend The Fat Radish. The food my wife and I ordered was excellent, and heavily wanted to go back the following day as we were only visiting the area for the weekend. Wife's flat iron was cooked to a nice medium rare and the smashed/crushed Potatoes were fantastic. The chicken curry, was some of the best I've had in the Northland, both soups, a spicy potatoes sausage and a spicy squash left good heat and were delicious. Waitress was polite, jovial and answered our questions and even recommended gluten free options. If you are GF I tolerant? Go. Here. Generally don't second guess trying the Fat Radish. I wish we had tried it yeeeeears ago! My only complaint would be we aren't closer to try their other dishes without the 2 hour drive. It is slow food, it is good food; respect the time and enjoy the food it produces.

Heard great things about this restaurant so we decided to check it out. It was not busy at all - just a group outside and one gentleman ahead of us ordering to go.

About 20min into waiting for our order we are told that it would be another 20min due to a large to go order that was placed just before we walked in. We debated on leaving but ended up sticking it out, which was not the right choice.

Finally got our food which was pretty good thankfully. The host came over and told us we could get a bakery item on the house for the wait. Went to get our desserts and were then told they would only actually give us one on the house. This was NOT clear when told to us as the table next to us couldn’t understand what she said when she came over. Very frustrating considering the wait. Not sure why she wasn’t willing to just give us each a complimentary item.

I understand that short staff and large orders means slow service, but this could have been told to us when we first walked in. Not after we sat and committed to ordering our food.

I love eating local when we are traveling but will not be coming back here. Good food must come with good customer service.

Talk about service and friendliness! We're doing the circle tour of Lake Superior and were on our way to Minnesota , but first wanted to treat ourselves to brunch at this restaurant. We had read good reviews online, and the farm to table concept appealed. We were early, but more than happy to wait in our RV for the 10 o'clock opening.
At 9:30 a.m., the owner came out to our RV and jokingly asked if we were starving. Of course my husband said yes (because he always is). The owner invited us in before opening and said he would whip us up a breakfast. What an honour to be treated like this. My husband had 2 eggs with sausage and whole wheat toast. I had a cheese and mushroom omelette with rye toast. Delicious. They make their own bread and it was so flavourful. We also had some lingonberry jam for our toast. I had a black tea (tea leaves in a teapot with strainer) and hubby had coffee. Both very good. The crockery that held our milk and cream was really cute. It just all added to the atmosphere of this comfortable homey restaurant.
The owner - and I'm sorry we didn't ask his name - chatted with us as if he had all the time in the world.
The other staff were also friendly and happy to chat. If we were staying in the area for another day, we'd go back for dinner. Really, I can't say enough good things about The Fat Radish restaurant. It was a perfect start to our day as we continue on our journey around the lake. Thank you!

Changing this review, hopefully it will gain some attention from mgt. We all got sick. Just terrible. I, and a separate party, took a gamble on the meatloaf. Horrible experience. Serving staff made negative comments about our tables beverage choices which could be overheard from the kitchen. The tables we were seated at were wobbly cheap junk. Food was universally over cooked, dried out meats, dried out sauces, with over cooked mushy pasta. Between the staffs behavior and the poor food I'd give this place a pass. We paid and left without finishing anything we'd ordered, then went to another local place to get treated properly for my friends birthday.

I made a 6:30 reservation on a Thursday, was told no problem. Upon arrival we were seated and menus. We then waited 15 minutes for menus and 20 minutes for water and bread. At that point our server stated, “I’ll be back for your food order.” Never asked for a drink order and did not even make eye contact. I am a super patient and an understanding person, as I am I the service industry as well. But the 15 (actually 18 minute) wait for even being acknowledged was, I guess, not acceptable. I believe I am understanding, but after 20 minutes no server until 21 minutes and to have her not be friendly or smile…. It was a turnoff. Because my family and I understand being busy. Again I’m in the service industry but the server just left a bad taste in my mouth about this establishment which has always been a favorite of ours.

Such a funky little place in Cornucopia. We stopped for Sunday brunch on the way to hike to Lost Creek Falls. We sat outside on the patio. No wait. Our waitress was really friendly and efficient. I had the Cajun Benny and my husband had the eggs with bacon and toast. I had a Bloody Mary that was really tasty. I loved my breakfast and the flavor combination of polenta, Cajun seasonings, fresh peppers, andouille and shrimp garnished with micro greens was perfect. I would have liked the andouille / shrimp combo to have more andouille and less shrimp, because the andouille was so good with the polenta and peppers. Note: if you plan to hike to list creek falls after eating, drinking the quart sized Bloody Mary might, in retrospect, be a not great idea. Stick with the small one and come back after for another. 🥹

Just had a nice evening out with friends we had the flat iron steak and it was absolutely fantastic. We also had the leg of lamb and it was also fantastic. The Shrimp el Pasta Fresca had great potential but when it comes with less shrimp than a shrimp cocktail it really takes a hit. The pasta with it was really good with some kick but very small portion, and only 3 shrimp. We had the bruschetta as an appetizer and it was very good just missing a balsamic drizzle or even some olive oil. Drinks were really good and the Dublin Moscow mule was tasty. Service at time slow but they were extremely busy apologetic and nice. Looks like local kids as a service staff which i give 5 stars!

I begin by saying the 2nd wait person was awesome. ( we moved to different section to get away from the 1st, very unhappy and passive-agressive guy server near the bar area.) #2 was awesome. The 1st one. On the other hand, ultimately ran us off with his aggressive manner of kinda throwing the silverware, s&p and the rest of the table set-up times at our table as we sat there. It was actually startling. The, after ignoring us for some time( only two patrons in the bar area besides us), I finally said, okay you win- we'll go to the other area - his response was, "Or i could just not serve you!

We did get reseated, asked for the manager, and was told they were gone for the day, later to find out the owner was sitting in the kitchen hanging w/ staff. Also, the rumor was the 1st server was the son of the owner(?).

Okay- got that off my chest.

The food was wonderful. We arrived at 1:20pm(?) Sunday, july 16, they closing at 2pm - Our food came quickly and it was wonderful! Very creative.

Oh but heres another hilarious comment. The firstt server brought me a bloody mary- it was truly a treat, with a stirstick chokefull of pickled radish&brussel sprout, a round red pepper, some asparagus spears and the obligatory celery stick .. it was amazing. I ordered a 2nd one later on, delivered to the new table and it was essentially a simple glass of tomatoe juice- zero ( ZERO) RELISH in the glass, and was told they were out of relishes. 100% nothing available ( and there was only two patrons in the bar when we moved.

Definitely suss, if not entertaining. As much as we enjoyed the delightful atmosphere and creative food options, really not interested in such a poorly managed operation. I believe the first server was merely a reflection of the manager who didn't want to be bothered.

Do not go here! Waited half an hour past our reservation time for Friday fish fry, service was terrible, only to be told they were sold out out of not only both the beers we ordered, but the fish fry. I’m not sure how you advertise Friday fish fry then sell out of the whitefish. Seemed more like a deliberate ploy to get people to order something else at twice the price. Would have been considerate if they me mentioned:that when we arrived. Very poor and slow service, high prices.

Best meals of our whole Bayfield vacation. Vegetables and sauces were superb! Try to go in an off time to avoid long waits. Also try to eat outside. Worth a visit, for sure!!

Exceptional flavors may at times excuse lengthy wait times for service at nice local restaurants.

Unfortunately, the only exceptional part of our experience at The Fat Radish on Thursday, 6 July 2023 was the time it took for the restaurant to prepare and serve our meal.

While I appreciate the fact that The Fat Radish prides itself on being part of the slow food movement, the exceptional wait times we experienced during our visit were inexcusable - especially since the quality of the food itself was for the most part on par with what we typically find at prominent national chain restaurants.

Here’s the timeline for our dining experience:

We were seated at 6:20 pm.
Our orders were taken by 6:30 pm.
Bread arrived at our table around 6:45pm.
Appetizers arrived around 7:10 pm.
Salads came around 7:30pm.
Main courses were presented around 7:55pm.

If you plan to bring young children along with you to The Fat Radish for dinner, bring snacks for the kids, because the delay you will likely experience in getting your food may be much longer than anticipated.

The highlight of our dining experience at The Fat Radish was the fried Brussels. They were quite good and worth the wait. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was not.

With exceptionally long wait times for service and overpriced food (a member of our party paid something like $26 for a small bowl of pasta with 2 shrimp on it) that’s ok, but not outstanding, I think we’ll pass on The Fat Radish during future trips to the Apostle Islands and the Bayfield Peninsula.

A very long wait for the food, about one and a half hours, two burned burgers, cold and dark french fries, burned and cold bruschetta. Not very tasty macaroni and cheese, plus they switched the two orders and served it to the wrong person. Out of nine meals only the steak was good. The vegetables and bread were good. They were out of spaghetti, lamb, lot of fish, scotch, onions. We had a mandatory gratuition of 20% for lousy food and not a very good service. While I was waiting for the food I could watch the waiters setting up tables. One table got new plates, but did not get wiped. I could see a spot of liquid at the table. A while later the other waiter noticed this and she wiped the table, without moving the plates! Nicely wiped around them. I cannot understand the other good reviews with all the mishaps we had.

We had a 7:00 Reservation and our order was taken 45 minutes later. The food didn’t come out until well after 9. Quality was alright, but definitely not worth the wait. We also had two children under 10. One of them went to sleep hungry because of the absurd wait time. The other will probably never sleep again after a trauma-inducing doll encounter. Would not recommend.

Horrible service! The food arrived over an hour after we ordered. When our orders did arrive the meat was charred, the food was cold, and the fries were soggy. To top it all off there was a puppet in the bathroom that looked like a grown up version of Annabelle from the Conjuring in the bathroom of all places (image attached). If you see it on the side of the road keep driving!

Family went here based off a friend's recommendation. 1 of 9 meals was great after the protein was sent back, but the others were rough. An hour after the order was placed, which was 45 minutes after the reservation, they were told 4 tickets were ahead of them. The creepy doll terrorized my niece. The bread, beer, and tortilla chips were good.

Food was alright, service was lackluster. Friendly greeting and quick seating, but we were barely checked on, almost had to go ask for our bill, and by the time that happened food was all finished and flies were gathering for leftovers. Might I suggest more friendly outgoing smiles, even if understaffed that makes an impression. Once we had the check I stood around waiting for a cashier. The burrito was ok, didn't have tenders so a chicken breast was cut up in slices. Lemonade was slightly sour and not too sweet and was enjoyed, but it took forever to get the refill. Maybe it was busier than usual but didn't seem busy enough for that service. Hopefully it improves.

Heading out of town and stopped in for breakfast on June 25th, 10-10:30, heard good things. Did not have reservations, didn't know we needed them. We were seated in the bar since all other empty tables (50%) in dining room were reserved. We got our coffee/bevs quickly enough then we were forgotten. We had to go get our own coffee refills. 10 minutes later we were asked to order food. Almost an hour later the food appeared. We each ordered some type of Benny. Each had room temp potato cubes, benny's were cool temp, poached eggs were just about solid/hard yokes. No one checked on us, probably didn't want to hear how our food sat waiting to be brought out. Wasn't impressed with staff or food.

We were so excited to finally try Fat Radish as we've heard good things. Unfortunately for us, our experience was poor. We were seated right away. We weren't given menus and no one came for our drink order. Tables that were sat after us quickly had their drink orders taken before us, as well as their food order. We had to ask someone to take our order. We watched one of those tables come and go before we had our food. After being there for at least an hour, they told us they were out of the food we ordered, offered a substitute, and said it would be another 25 minutes. We left at that point because we didn't have the time to wait any longer. There didn't appear to be anyone in charge.

Know ahead of time that this place isn't quick but the food is superior. Local ingredients are used when in season and perfectly cooked and presented. We've had many amazing meals at this hidden gem of a restaurant. They have a Friday fish dinner that is amazing and AYCE for $16! The broiled fish is divine! Get the pork belly bowl if you’re there for Sunday brunch. Service can be slow and inattentive since they're always packed. I would recommend making reservations.

I'm from Minneapolis and don't know anyone in this small 'coastal' town. I'm telling you.. do not miss the opportunity to eat here.

Ending four days Superior sailing we ended up in Cornucopia because we hadn't been.

I wanted a beer and a burger and was sure I'd be at a place with an Old Milwaukee sign outside.

Admittedly, for the first 60 seconds I doubted whether that was the type of place I wanted to be at. So glad I stayed.

The attention to detail on the food was impressive, the bar was impressively stocked and had a great tender.

We had the meatloaf, the salmon and the tenderloin.. all amazing. The crabcake app was not what we expected but appreciated the different take. My friends raved about the irish coffee after dinner.

Fun staff ready to cater.

We made reservations for 7:15. Got seated at 8:00. Why make reservations if they are not treated like a reservation? We waited at the bar. Ordered a drink from their handcrafted menu. A "Wisconsin Old Fashion". The bartender handed us a mostly clear drink with an asparagus and mushroom included. My husband reminded the bartender he ordered old fashions, the bartender said, "yes. Whiskey and sour." My husband said, "what are these?" He said, "Whiskey sours." My husband again said, "I ordered old fashions." The bartender picked up our money and threw it back on the bar and said, "they are on me." I did not care for the drink, so I slid it next to the edge in front of the bartender. He never asked me if I wanted something else. Never picked up the untouched drink. A local at the bar saw what was happened and declared "he was having a day." After 30 minutes of waiting, I finally asked if I might get a different drink. I was afraid to though because he was so angry. He said, sure. (How gracious) I asked for an amaretto and sour as I thought I saw it on the shelf. He said, I don't have that. I decided to try something easy and ordered a glass of red wine. I received it and paid for it. Also left a $3 tip for the one drink we ordered and received. In hindsight I should not have tipped him.

The food was ok. The service was lacking. I would not call what we received a 4.5 star restaurant though. The soup of the day was described to me as a "tomato, fennel, bean vegan thing." Which I tried. It was delicious. Our group ordered fish tacos, trout, and a flat iron steak plate. The tacos were over salted. The salsa was extremely over salted. The steak tasted off. And was covered in a balsamic vinegar flavoring that overpowered everything. Which probably was done to mask the bad meat. There were two completely burned asparagus stalks and one chunk of carrot with my potatoes. The potatoes were done well but swimming in dijon mustard.

Finally, the dessert of a brownie sundae. How can that get messed up right? Well, it smelled delicious, looked delicious, it was warm from the oven, and covered in .... SALT! No lie.

Not sure what was happening with the salt shaker in the restaurant, but you will need lots of water to finish the meal.

I did not go into the restaurant expected to be blown away, but sad when you walk out wondering if you were going to be sick that evening.

It appears the restaurant is a local favorite so it must be good. Maybe I was being too critical. There are not many places to go out for dinner in the area, so I am thankful for having someone else cook.

As I review how this place has so many 5 stars I am noticing how many of these reviews are from "local guides". So maybe they are people who are simply trying to pump up the review ratings. Are they people who have actually eaten there?

When you take the time to read the reviews the majority have the same comments. Bad service by crabby people and poor quality food. I would have said something at the restaurant about all of this but my son was adamant that I keep my mouth shut. After reading other reviews, it appears the people who did speak their minds were not treated well, so I thank my son for keeping me in check.

My final thought is how does the restaurant handle these reviews. Do they reach out to ask for clarification or apologize? I don't see evidence on the site of their reaction. We will see.

Made a reservation for 2 for my husband and my anniversary. We let the host know when we called that it was our anniversary and she let us know she would tell the servers when we got there. When we got there, I was expecting a bit more class. Total farmhouse, family style restaurant. Nothing special, besides being farm-to-table. Our bread got to the table and the butter had a funky smell to it. It smelt like dirty mop restaurant water and I started to think they used that water to wash out the butter dish. My husband ordered the fish fry and it was so bland. He had to wait about 15 minutes for our waiter to come by to ask for salt. I ordered the short ribs which were fine but the Mac and cheese and brussel sprouts that came with it were cold. All-in-all, we never got anything for out anniversary and spent way too much for what the food was worth. Very disappointed.
