Located across the parking lot from Target on Hwy PD / McKee Rd. Been here multiple times over the years. It's gotten better with time. Met a friend for a weekend lunch. Not busy. Staff was pleasant and quick. Food was good.

Menu has gotten smaller, and everything has become a la carte, but the prices went up. No more poutine, and the chicken used in the Caesaer wrap was pretty low quality.

It has been a year or 2 since we had been here. I am afraid it is dieing. Food choices have greatly decreased and now sides are all extra. We were surprised that our drinks cake to table in cans. She had opened them before we knew. Waitress didn't bring one of our meals and didn't notice. We had to flag the manager down to find out what was happening. Hope they work things out but it was early in the evening and when we left it was only employees there.

Tried two beers before settling on the Kombine. Good suggestion. Got the house burger with the soft fried egg. Okay flavor. Waffle fries were too greasy and probably overcooked.

French onion soup lacked flavor. Walleye was overcooked making it dry. Tasted like it was mass produced and frozen. Coke was weak with the syrup. Our third visit here and our last. Way better out there.

Great environment and great beer list, including excellent imports. I meet with coworkers here in the evening sometimes and we usually catch Karsten bartending. He does an excellent job and cares about his product and customers. Haven't had the food yet but looks good and I only hear good things. Highly recommended.

This used to be tops on my recommendation list for great places to eat that you probably had never been before. Now, it’s just another bar with burgers. What a shame. Our server was wonderful and the food we did have was quite tasty. It just isn’t what I expected having frequented this establishment in the recent past. Gone is the unique menu that made this restaurant a worthwhile stop. I was surprised to see the parking lot so empty but it was easily explained when I saw the name change to “The Hound” and the bleak menu. Our server told us that she has heard “so many people” lament that their favorite items are gone. I’m sure there is an explanation for this rebranding suicide, I just don’t care to hear it.

Great place to meet and hang with friends, patio is awesome, I joined some friends late and I still didn’t have to wait too long for my food.
For food, I got the buffalo chicken wrap and waffle fries. The wrap was okay, and but the waffle fries were really hard, not burnt but hard to chew.
Overall, good atmosphere both inside and on the patio, great service

What has happened to the Flying Hound? I expected one of my favorite entrees (chicken piccata) only to find the menu does not offer entrees anymore. We ordered the taco special and it was one of the worst meals I've ever experienced. Pretty tasteless tacos, cold refried beans, pale pink rice (their version of Spanish rice). It appeared to be white rice with some tomato juice poured on it. Ugh. Some tables replaced with game machines and table shuffle. Also, only 2 people working, quite understaffed. We have gone here on and off for years, but will not be returning. Online menus need to be updated as they are not correct.

I would be absolutely shocked if this place is still open a year from now. I know English food is bottom of the barrel overall from a global standpoint (because they still eat like it's WWII) but like one other reviewer said, there use to be unique menu items (the Scotch eggs were great) that are no longer there. We went today for lunch and it was pretty dead for a Saturday at 12:30 (which is never a good sign). The cheese curds and the Walleye were the worst I've ever had (and if you are a restaurant in Wisconsin and can't get cheese curds and Walleye correct you are not going to succeed) and the coleslaw tasted rancid. The bartender/server was nice but I can read people pretty well and his eyes looked dead (as in he could tell he was working at a sinking ship). There are no kids options and everything was overpriced for the quality we received. I absolutely will pay for a good meal and understand that costs have risen but it's an objective fact the food was not worth the money. I gave two stars instead of one because the staff was very friendly overall.

UPDATE Nov. 2024
NOOOOoooooOOOOO!!!!!!!
Along with a name change, "The Hound" (now earthbound) has revised its menu and tossed out those incredibly wonderful Scotch Eggs that always drew me in for a quick snack when passing by, along with regular meals. They offer fish fry every day now, but perch is no longer on the menu. I find these changes much to the worse (previously they changed the quesadilla and made it a less desirable option). Sorry, gotta dock a few stars for food now, I fail to understand the rationale for these menu changes. less choice is never better. I also suspect there may not be as many craft beers available anymore. Shame on you -- Bad Dog!
May 2025 update: I have not been back, and no plans to.
******
I can always depend on finding a big selection of beers and spirits at this fine pub, with rotating beer and ale and cider selections weekly. And the food is excellent, especially the Friday fish fry options. I hope they NEVER stop offering their Scotch eggs on the appetizer menu! I order one (or more) of these every time I find time for a quick pit stop for a snack and a pint. And they are de rigeur before any larger meal. No one and no place else makes as good a Scotch egg in my experience, which includes Scottish Highland games and time spent in Great Britain. Flying Hound knows how to do the job!

It was super busy with limited servers. Went through a round of drinks before our order was even taken. Took forever to get the food and when we got it, the kids chicken tenders were cold and my walleye was raw in the center. We had to leave due to a prior engagement and reluctantly paid. I did bring the issues to our server, but was only offered a beer for the troubles. I did call the restaurant back and after a few hours was called back to have the bill voided. The restaurant did make it right, but we wouldn't give it another thought about going back.

First time here. Was looking for a place to have apps with my son on his birthday. Monday evening. Not busy. Not impressed. Speciality cocktail was not special. Took 25 min to get a pretzel. House queso was more like cheese whiz. Should have went to Quiveys.

My biggest disappointment was John the bartender. I may have read him wrong, however I did not care for his attitude. I felt he was very cocky. Owning a Madison restaurant for over 50 years I always leave very generous cash tips which I did because I chose to sit in the bar area. He left me with the feeling that he could have cared less, never said “good bye”, but to interested in bullshiting with his buds.

Food was average, but one of our party of 5 didn’t get their food until 25 minutes after everyone else. They didn’t tell us about the wait and I had to flag down the bartender to ask. He said the salmon “just takes a little while.”
I talked to the manager, but she initially only gave a $2 discount. After explaining just long we had been waiting, she did begrudgingly comp the dish.
I appreciate them (eventually) making it right, but I wouldn’t recommend going here.

On Friday night, I ordered a burger that comes with a side of fries. My friends ordered grilled fish and received their meals promptly. However, I waited 30 minutes for a cold burger and no fries. I asked for a to-go box as soon as I received the burger since my friends had already finished eating. Twenty minutes later, the waitress brought the box, and I inquired about the missing fries. She asked if I wanted a side or a whole order of fries, and I told her to bring whatever comes with the meal.
Ten minutes later, I received a small side of fries to add to the cold, boxed burger.
Ever since the restaurant changed its name from the "Flying Hound" to "The Hound," the menu has been cut in half, the prices have doubled, and the service has become terrible.
This is disappointing since I live only a block away.
Beware.

Unfortunately this place is no longer what it used to be. First the name changed to just "The Hound" and now the menu has undergone a disappointing overhaul. Gone are the days of scotch eggs, poutine, and other unique menu finds. The new, much smaller menu is nothing to rave about. Basic bar food. I'm guessing they lost their chef and the great menu along with him.
We came on a Friday just before 5pm and it was not as busy as I would have expected. Only a few tables for happy hour. It still took the staff over 5 minutes to come over after we sat down. Service was good otherwise. Fish fry and burger were average. Prices have gone up... Sides are no longer included with sandwiches/burgers, so add an extra $5 if you want fries.
This used to be one of our go-to restaurants and somewhere we'd recommend to out-of-towners looking for great food and an extensive beer menu. Sad to say, that is no longer the case. I don't think we'll be going back.

We had our server forget our cheese curds last night. Brought our food out and I mentioned it to her. She immediately apologized and I told her no worries! To my surprise she comp'd the curds even though I hadnt complained. Now THATS service. Impressed with the service, food and tunes. I had the Flying Hound Burger and the only issue was my egg wasnt as runny as I would have liked but guess what? SHIT HAPPENS. Still enjoyed it! :)

We ate here after I had hiked more than 15 miles on the Ice Age Trail. I started with a large pretzel (which we enjoyed) and then had the decent (but a bit under-cooked) Flying Hound Burger. My wife enjoyed her salad. She raved about a grapefruit beer. I had a gluten-free (I didn't know this was an issue with beer) amber ale which was somewhat disappointing. The vibe seemed a bit too alternative, which might explain why the place was surprisingly empty on a Saturday night. We probably wouldn't eat here again.

The extensive selection of craft beers is impressive, catering to every taste. The food is equally fantastic - their menu boasts a variety of delicious options. I highly recommend trying the signature burgers, they are cooked to perfection.

We frequently do takeout and find the meals have just gotten rather mid lately. Always happy to support a local restaurant and orders are ready quick, but fries are consistently soggy by the time we get home (10 minute drive) and sandwiches/burgers can vary in overall quality.
Meanwhile it feels like the Great Dane has stepped up their takeout game where orders are always still hot with the same drive time.

Didn't get an appetizer until halfway through the meal, didn't get sauce for it until halfway through the appetizer, and they still charged me $3 extra for it (didn't communicate this charge up front). "Seasonal greens" was half an unseasoned carrot. Fries and pretzel were also unseasoned. $80 for two people to have two dinners, an app, and two drinks - the most I've paid in Verona by far. Skip.

This place is a nice, quiet bar/restaurant/tap room. We stopped in on a whim while shopping on a Saturday, for a beer and an appetizer. We ordered an IPA, a stout and the giant pretzel with the cheese sauce. The beers, tasty. The pretzel, delicious. The cheese sauce, home made and very very good. The service, stupendous! I'd recommend checking this place out! EDIT; we went a second time for dinner a few days later. One kid had the bacon and Bleu burger...loved it! Cooked perfectly! My wife had the Reuben and loved it! Corned beef cooked perfectly, sandwich not soggy and delicious. I had the beef stroganoff and I was wonderful - pasta cooked perfectly, tender beef and a very nicely prepared cream sauce.
Whether it's a snack before shopping, or a dinner out with the fam, I recommend stopping here.

As is often the case there was a set of heavy doors to enter, and the wind was against me. Using crutches as a bilateral amputee I struggled to get in. Food is ALWAYS really good, and they have a great beer selection. Also, the bartenders are knowledgeable, and make killer cocktails. Never have been disappointed, and I am here at least 3 times a month.

Service was great and the atmosphere was nice. The food wasn't at all good (except for the fries).

A visit to The Flying Hound Alehouse turned out to be a delightful surprise, transforming an initial disappointment into a memorable dining experience. My girlfriend, my parents, and I visited on a Friday in April, seeking refuge from a long wait at a nearby restaurant, with our sights set on indulging in their famed fish fry.
We were not let down, as each of us ordered one of the fish fry options. The fried Alaskan cod, in particular, was a standout dish. Unlike the usual cod fish fry at other restaurants, which can often be greasy and deep-fried, the Alaskan cod here was tightly breaded, giving it a perfect texture. Even my girlfriend, who tends to be quite picky about food, declared it the best fish fry she had ever tasted. Since our visit, she has been eager to return and relive the mouth-watering experience.
Our server played a significant role in making our dining experience memorable. Despite being visibly busy with other tables, he remained attentive and provided exceptional service throughout our meal. The Flying Hound Alehouse also boasts an extensive selection of tap and bottled beers, ranging from local Midwest brews to international options, ensuring there's something to suit every palate.
Beyond the fantastic food and drinks, The Flying Hound Alehouse offers a lively atmosphere that's perfectly fitting for its name. The energetic ambience adds to the charm of the place, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a fun and engaging dining experience.
Don't let the strip mall location near Target deter you; The Flying Hound Alehouse is a hidden gem that's well worth a visit. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a delicious meal, outstanding service, and a vast array of beverages in a casual, welcoming, and lively atmosphere. Give this place a try, and you'll be planning your return visit before you know it!

Okay…was really looking forward to trying out the flying hound as I had heard good things about it.
But alas, the only things I learned are that they have easy access off McKee Rd and they are not open on Mondays

Great fun atmosphere.
Inattentive, inexperienced server. We had the same young girl twice. I was hoping to get another server or just give her another chance.
We always tip well but, so annoying when you are waiting to order a drink while looking at your server eating food and looking at you. I've been in the bar/ restaurant arena and never let servers eat while working. We trained them to be efficient and attentive. Scan you section, scan your co-workers sections. help others if you have time. Chat a bit with your customers- then you get that big fat tip! not just the 20%

Nice ale house for a beer and to catch up. The menu looked nice, unfortunately they didn't have lunch specials. Their tap list is refreshing and sizeable though!

The blackened salmon was very good. The chicken piccatta was also excellent. Pass on the fish and chips, as this was bland.

NOT worth ANY money/ time! (Maybe they have decent drinks; but I only got food during bro's bDay celebration. At least our server was Really kind & helpful! & ONLY part I'd recommend, if y'all also invited one day: nachos App; though careful W/spice! I had to wash my lips from pain ~ even though I ♥️ & usually can "handle" higher spice levels. Maybe ask for milk / LEMONADE! yes ~ lemonade ACTUALLY HELPS! 🤣) 🤷🏻♀️

The service was great. I ordered the Reuben sandwich, the menu said it had sauerkraut and 1000 island dressing, the sandwich did not. Probably won't go back.

Food was room temp instead of piping hot. Bartender was an oddball & wouldn't accept cash & insisted we open a tab. A quick burger & beer turned into hell on earth.

My wife and I and another couple dined here a couple of weeks ago mid-week. Throughout our time the restaurant was approximately one-quarter full. I had the steak and my wife had the schnitzel sandwich. Our server was very nice but inattentive. We had a fairly long wait for our food, and when it came out it was all just a shade above room temperature. It had been sitting for far too long after it was prepared. As for the food, the steak was average, well seasoned but cool. The sides were quite plain, but may have been a bit better if served hot. The schnitzel sandwich was blah, not seasoned well, and the cheese had cooled and glued itself to the decidedly "uncrispy" schnitzel. We were excited to try the Flying Hound after learning it's owners also own the Free House and will be opening a new restaurant in the old Brasserie V location in Madison. We've enjoyed the Free House for years, and now live close to Monroe Street. Hopefully this group's Monroe Street location will be more on the level of the Free House for service and quality.

What was supposed to be a fun night out before Christmas turned into an expensive dinner. I bit into the burger and broke my tooth on a ground bone. The manager came and apologized but nobody even offered to pay for my burger. It ended up costing me $275 to get my tooth fixed.

Great beer selection and good food. Its a place I go maybe once a month to watch football or hang out for a bit, eat dinner. Im not a regular. The staff is fine but just never seem real thrilled to be working.
