I had high hopes for The Freighthouse, given its 4.6 ⭐️ reputation and the unique setting, but unfortunately my experience didn’t live up to the expectations.

I ordered the 20oz Porterhouse, cooked medium-rare. While it was prepared to the correct temperature, it had absolutely no flavor. For a steakhouse of this caliber, seasoning and flavor should be the highlight, and this was deeply disappointing. I paired it with a baked potato, which honestly ended up being the best part of the meal — simple, but actually enjoyable.

On the positive side, our server Kristen (or Kirsten) was excellent. She was friendly, attentive, and clearly did her best to make the evening pleasant. Service was not the issue here.

The atmosphere seemed like it had potential with the historic building, but the dining room was noticeably smokey/hazy, which made it hard to relax and enjoy the meal.

Overall, this visit fell short. For the price point and the reputation, I expected much better. Good service can’t make up for bland food and a less-than-comfortable dining environment.

Small sirloin, scallops appetizer and small sirloin with shrimp were had by our group. The steaks were tender and flavorful. The scallops were tantalizing and the shrimp were delicious. The service was top notch. We had steamed vegetables as our side, those could have used some seasoning. The summer salad was refreshing and the salad bar had a lot of topping choices with fresh greens. Will go again if ww are back in the area. They do need to refresh their online menu. The prices are higher than printed online and the menu is smaller than the one posted online. We will go there again if we are in the area.

Horrible experience here and worse knowing the severe rat problem they have. They have a motion-detected rodent deterrent that goes off CONSTANTLY day and night. Total nuisance to all those who live nearby as it is insanely loud. Guests hear it on arrival. Why would anyone want to eat at a place with such a blatant rodent problem?

We stopped around 5:30 Friday and were pleased to be seated right away. We split the 20 oz Prime Rib. It must have been 3"- 3 1/4" It was tender and full of flavor. Long day, and we arrived late and near closing. They were kind enough to accept us in but we nearly left when no one came to our table for the first five minutes.
My wife had a great piece of salmon with a buttery dipping sauce and I ordered a small sirloin steak with steamed veggies. There was absolutely no seasoning on my food..at all. It came out hot but that’s all I appreciated about it. Pretty expensive for what I received.
I very much liked the atmosphere. I enjoy history and it was neat being in the old train station.

I am a repeat customer. I always thought that the food could not be better. I was wrong the filet was wonderful and the prime rib was beyond perfect and was so big I tried to get a photo but couldn’t get it to fit. Service was super and atmosphere excellent. I was disappointed in the bar a poor selection of martinis and the bartender was apparently new with little help. Not great. Cute place with a great atmosphere. Very cozy and intimate feeling. Stopped in for dinner on a Monday night at around 7:15pm - got seated quickly in a comfy two person booth on the corner.

Wine was great and priced affordably. Service was prompt and courteous, although slightly awkward - we were asked about dessert just as our entrees arrived and then asked again after we had 2 bites down.

Both of us had steaks; the peppercorn strip was overcooked, tough and underseasoned. Filet was cooked perfectly but woefully underseasoned. The side of asparagus was cooked very poorly - wilty tops and woody stems. Not worth the up charge.

I’m sure the place has its moments but it feels like charm is the leading quality here. The food wasn’t too remarkable. Especially when the total before tip was $130 for two steaks and a few glasses of wine.

Freighthouse is a LaCross standard. Steaks are big and very flavorful, salad bar and seasonal salads are always fresh, and the seafood is also excellentt. I got 12 oz. prime rib this time (although my actual steak was more like 24 oz.). It was cooked exactly medium as ordered. I paired it with a local Spotted Cow draft and it was hard to beat. My dinner guest got the grilled cold water lobster tail and it was perfect. Our server was super attentive and did a great job as well. I highly recommend!

Food is good but their staff won't sit you even if the entire dining room is empty and tables are available because "those are the rules". So if you are a table for 1. Plan to wait for a minimum of an hour since they won't take reservations for groups less than 10. They lack enough tables for small groups but have tables for large groups (4) that they won't sit you at. If you have time to burn and want to wait an hour, the food is pricey but is okay. Honestly there are many other restaurants in the area that will treat guests better even though the food quality is decent. Maybe management can revisit their "rules" and seat people more efficiently.

My husband ate here back in the 90s with a group for a conference. He came home raving about it. We both had the opportunity to dine here while visiting family in Wisconsin last night. The Freight House did not disappoint after all these years. Very few restaurants are able to uphold that reputation, especially in the food industry today. It is your CLASSIC supper club from the decor to the ambiant lighting and is timeless. Ryan, our server, told us he has been employed with them since 1992, and it showed. He genuinely cared about the service we received and was absolutely top notch. He checked in with us just the right amount of times and chatted long enough to hear of our past and present visit to the restaurant. He came out after our dinner with a huge piece of excellent grasshopper pie (free of charge, but we would have been happy to have purchased).
My husband had the prime rib, and it was perfect. I had the 5oz tenderloin, also perfect. Great salad bar, great rice pilaf, GREAT old fashion! Thank you, Freight House owners and staff, for your dedication to this establishment. Great visit!! Keep up the good work.

Went for a family reunion dinner gathering as an early Father’s Day celebration because one family member suggested it. Probably considered one of the higher-end restaurants in La Crosse area. Ambience and decor was dark, not warm or inviting. Plenty of parking and not a very long wait to get it, although we did have a reservation. Food presentation was decent but the quality left much to be desired. I ordered the Sirloin steak and Scallops combo—the scallops were fine, but the steak was dry and extremely tough because it was overcooked (I had requested medium well) and probably sitting for a bit. Another family had their filet undercooked. The worse part was the asparagus—they were nice and tender, perfectly cooked but had grains of sand so clearly were not washed or rinsed thoroughly. This wasn’t just one spear that had sand grains but every spear on my plate and especially at the heads of the spears. Another family member had the same issue with their asparagus so whoever cooked the batch must have been in a hurry. This is an absolute disappointment for a higher-end restaurant for something so basic.

The only reason this wasn’t rated one star was because of the good service of the waitress. Our server was very friendly and even though there were 9 of us which we assumed would automatically result in the 20% tip being added to the check, that did not happen. We of course made sure to tip her well. Frankly all their staff were very friendly. Unfortunately the food quality will deter me from returning the next time I am in town.

Heard many good things about this place, and it was my first time. Unfortunately I was very disappointed in the service and the quality of the food. First, we ordered drinks from the bar. Drinks were week and some of us were missing the garnishes. We also had a different time trying to get a second drink, so most of us skipped it. Me and 2 other people at our table ordered the Prime Rib. It was so tough that none of us could hardly cut through it with a knife. The Prime Rib looked baked instead of roasted, which any chef knows makes a big difference. And there are different grades of beef, with Aged Prime being the best, next is Prime, then Choice, and last is Select. And each grade has different levels. The Prime Rib I had was a low level of Select Beef. Now I am not trying to bash this place in any way, and it's been around for a long time and must have been doing something great to be around so long, so I am definitely willing to give it another try and I am hoping this review helps to improve the service, the quality of the food and how it's prepared. Oh one more thing, everyone reading this is probably wondering why I didn't send my Prime Rib back and maybe get something else from the menu. Well! When our waiter seen us struggling to cut into the Prime Rib he looked at us and totally avoided us.

First time here and this place was Amazing! The atmosphere is neat, our waitress Sidney was sweet, courteous, and attentive. Best of all was the food. A very nice place to eat, albeit with some issues (for me). 1. They take no reservations so you'll either need to plan to eat early, or late, or show up at 5 something and wait - there are not a lot of tables, and only a few for two people.
2. While there are tables in the bar area where you can wait, don't think you can eat there either- unless you want an appetizer because that's all you can order there.
3. With the menu on the expensive side, I expected really great food - especially the prime rib which they caution could run out. My date and I arrived at 7 ish and waited about 15-20 minutes to be seated. She had lobster, (it was good). I had the prime rib, which was way worse than I expected. I ordered medium rare, expecting uniform pink. I received a piece that was half medium (in the round area) and half rare (in the tail area). Seriously- no medium rare anywhere. I called attention to the discrepancy and the waitress promptly took it back to "resolve it". A few minutes later and I received the same piece of meat that had been put on to the grill for a minute to cook the outside of it more. So the medium part was now really overcooked, and the rare part was, well, rare with a medium outer layer. Oh, and perhaps it was a dull knife (though I tried both), I had a heck of a time to cut it. Flavor was OK as long as I used the au jus.

For the price (or any price), the food was consistently poor quality. Three $45 filets with no flavor, cooked well-done. Scallops in two separate side dishes were overcooked as to be chewy and flavorless. The scallops were served in a butter sauce mixed with green peppers so I tasted green peppers instead of scallop. I can't imagine why anyone would put green peppers in with scallops unless to mask the taste?

I came here not knowing what to expect and ended up with a great experience. I originally wanted to sit at the bar since I was by myself but it was pretty full. I went back to the host and told him I changed my mind and would like a table and he sat me at the honeymoon table because it was the only the smallest table available at the time. I especially appreciated the thoughtful touch of a birthday treat: the grasshopper pie was delicious and a wonderful surprise!

While visiting La Crosse, I waited several hours to order from this restaurant as they have a late opening time only to be told that they would not be doing to go orders. As I am not from the area and had my dog with me dining in wasn’t an option. We had a party of 9. We waited almost 1 1/2 hours for our food. Prime rib was good but all other steaks were overcooked and cold. They wouldn’t refund me on the meal. Compensation was a slice of cheesecake. Won’t go back. Get Big Al’s Pizza instead!

First time here!!! The hotel we stayed at recommended it! We were not disappointed, the food was wonderful, loved the salad bar and our waiter was great!! We recommend eating here and the next time we are in La Crosse we will be sure to have dinner again!!

A staple to the dining scene in LA Crosse. Our server Ryan was absolutely in tune with our large parties needs and was there whenever needed. Food offerings are very straightforward but also executed well. Our family were very happy guests when were done.

This place is one of our favorite places to eat! The food always tastes great and the portion size is more than sufficient. On a weekend it gets really busy and there may be a wait for a table but we don't mind waiting because the atmosphere is never dull in the bar.

Delicious!! Everything was delicious. The salad, the bread, the Prime Rib, the Crab Legs. I didn't have enough room for dessert, but I'm sure that would've been delicious too. We had a large party and took up 2 large extended tables. The server did a great job managing the party. Kept water refilled. Checked on us throughout. Made sure we had everything we needed. 10 outta 10

This truly is an old freighthouse that's been remodeled yet retaining the original features of wood and brick. Photos of its past hang on the walls. Excellent food. We try to eat here when we're in the area. Steaks and prime rib are the best. Salads and salad bar are really fresh. Staff are very pleasant and well-trained. Makenzie was our server and very helpful.

Awesome food, our server Lexi was the best and it's a beautiful historic building.
The prices were great, it's a steakhouse so it's not cheap, but you get a lot of food for the price!
We all ordered steak, 8oz fillet, which came with a 1 trip to the salad bar or side salad and then another side. (We had seasonal veggies, wild rice abd a loaded baked potato in our order) And as a treat we each got a different dessert so we could try all 3.
Everything was so good!!
The quadruple chocolate mousse pie was awesome! Seriously, if you love chocolate, get it!! (Even though it's The Bane of Lexi's existence, but we don't hold it against her! Lol Hi Lexi!! Thank you!)

Steak and potato came out cold and flavorless, no salt or pepper on table, odd smells are different in dinning room. Service was slow and forgot to get us our wine list. When we got it wine was tasty. This place is overpriced for steak that was not high quality. This place is like going back to the 80s in every way possible
