The links at Lawsonia is very over-rated. The conditions of a course charging $133.00 for a round of golf were very disappointing. From tee to green, the conditions were very dry, surprisingly with a beautiful large, deep Green Lake to keep fairways and greens soft and playable. If you want a great links course at half the value travel south to Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, WI. Great layout, super nice people and conditions were perfect. Myself and my group will not return to Lawsonia, it is too bad as I heard too many good things.

Only played once, links is a nice course.
Expensive drinks and a 6-hour round with zero help from the staff to move things along.

Way too expensive for the value.

Both courses were in great shape and fun to play! The driving range is blind after about 100 yards which is weird but works. The bartender was slow and not very attentive but overall a great course and would definitely recommend.. Bring plenty of balls if youre playing the woodlands course!

Going to say some constructively negative things, but I’m still definitely going back! The links course, though, was AMAZING and so fun.

Upon arrival, we were not greeted at the bag drop (employees were joking with vulgarity to the side and didn’t even notice us). When we entered the clubhouse and paid $100 each, no instructions or explanation of where to go was offered. We arrived early to warm up, but the range was closed (they could have texted everyone with a tee time). The greens on the back nine were a little too beaten up and inconsistent.

The Lawsonia Links course is challenging but very playable. Elevated greens reward those who can hit a high ball that sticks. Bunkers around the elevated greens are the risk for an errant shot. Greens roll nicely. I can't say enough good things about the staff- they are friendly and helpful. And, even on a busy weekend day, the rounds still flow at only a bit over 4 hours. Marshalls help with that as well. This is the kind of course that makes me want to play it again and again so I get better at it. A top notch golf course.

It's unfortunate to see the condition of this course. The prices have almost doubled since 2020 - greens fees AND pro shop apparel. It doesn't appear much of that money is going back into the course. The condition of the tee boxes and greens particularly are borderline offensive to even a decent golfer. Cart GPS's were WAY OFF and cart service on the course was non-existent unless you were close to the clubhouse on either 9. I've likely made my last visit to this course unless things change. For reference - I played both courses on this property this trip - twice.

What’s happening to Lawsonia?

I’ve historically been one of the biggest Lawsonia stans, but cannot give the experience more than 3 stars anymore.

No walking rate tells me all I need to know. I will also echo the recent comments about conditions…it’s like there’s no grounds crew keeping an eye on things. Greens were the worst I’ve seen and the fairways degrading due to all the cart traffic. All for the highest prices ever.

Seems to me that the recent success and popularity of the course has made management forget what makes this course great. It all starts with good conditions, getting more walkers on course, and not jacking the prices.

Not sure if I will be back for my yearly buddies trip and surely moving Lawsonia down my list of favorite courses.

Played Links course 6/3/25 and it was disappointing. Layout is pretty fun, if you're looking for a links style challenge this is it. If the wind is up you might as well be in Scotland. The table top greens are certainly unique and made for difficult approach shots.

But the layout is where the fun ends. First, bummed that it's just as expensive whether walking or riding. A generally flat, sub-7,000 yard course should encourage walking.

Second, while the fairways and rough were pretty good and the greens were ok but definitely oversanded, the tee boxes were worse than my $25 muni. Horrific only begins to describe it. Uneven, dry, uncared for. It looked like they had been stricken with mange. Truly awful.

I played on a Tuesday with reduced greens fees, and even then it wasn't worth it. The only thing that made me feel like I got my money's worth was the free bottled water on hole 11. Unless and until they fix the tee boxes and generally get course condition to match layout, avoid this one on your Wisconsin golf trip.

I’ve been coming to play Lawsonia for + 25 years and it’s never a disappointment! The Links course is an absolute treasure, with elevated greens that require precision approach shots preferably below the hole, with most guarded by steep bunkers that will test even the most skilled short game. The Woodlands is an exciting tree lined course that offers a nice complement to the more highly regarded Links course. The recent less than stellar reviews around course conditions have obviously not spent much time golfing in WI in late spring/early summer after a cold & fairly dry spring. Sanded/punched greens early in the season are not unusual & with more seasonal rain over the past couple of weeks the course is quickly rounding into top shape. Driving range could use some updates & more range balls but for me that doesn’t really distract from the overall experience. Lawsonia remains a gem & a must stop when making the rounds of top WI courses.

I absolutely love this course and have since I was 13. It is really sad as to what is happening on the Links. It’s completely ran into the ground. Greens. Bad. Fairways. Bad. Price. Bad. It’s a 100 year old links course and it should be somewhat rustic. But the condition of the course is beyond that. The photo I posted is the tee box of #7. Their signature hole.

Unfortunately Lawsonia has fallen for the money grab that golf has turned into. Highest prices ever with very little effort going back into the course. Lawsonia Links is simply not worth the $140 price tag.

I played the Links on Saturday June 7th 2025 and the course was in great shape. Recent reviews suggest the greens were sandy but maybe they played the Woodlands because the Links greens were pretty damn good.

Would be 4 star for $50. For $140, the greens were inconsistent and over-sanded. Tee boxes uneven. Two drink carts were out and we saw one on 10 and one on 18. Horrible, for that price.

Played Links on Wednesday then Woodlands on Thursday. Really enjoyed the layout of both courses and had fun. However, the cost for the round is criminal considering the condition of both courses. Tee boxes are a mess, greens are ok at best (inconsistent, sandy, and damaged areas) and the fairways on par with municipal courses. I would play this course for $80 but never again for the ~$150 they are charging now. It is clear that all of the money is going into someone’s pocket and not course upkeep and improvements. They continue to get heavy traffic, but the course upkeep is going to catch up with them. You will have fun playing both of these courses, but don’t expect a top tier experience to go with the top tier greens fees.

★ 2

Extremely disappointing experience. Please see other notes about how poorly the course is maintained. We played the course on June 1st and the greens were completely dead and covered in sand--the fairways were not much better. This course certainly is no longer one of the nicest public courses in the country. I am not even sure it is one of the 50 best public courses in Wisconsin! $150 for a bad experience (I haven't even mentioned the incredibly slow pace of play) and I now understand why there were a ton of tee times available on a Sunday in early June. Wish I could get a refund for such a bad experience, but warning others not play here will have to be enough.

Lawsonia is hands down one of the best public courses in the Midwest. The Links course offers a classic, challenging layout with incredible elevation changes, fast greens, and stunning views that rival private clubs. Conditions were excellent, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. I’ve seen a few lower-rated reviews, but they completely miss the mark—this is a top-tier experience that any golfer should appreciate. Can’t wait to come back!

It’s a real shame. Full of potential but incredibly poorly maintained. My guess would be they are in financial trouble. Weeds, uncut fairways, understaffed, uneven and beat up tee boxes. Greens were punched and unplayable. The issue with that is they didn’t tell us until we got there. I could go on. Nice people in the bar. Again, I can see the potential but very disappointing.
We were excited to play after seeing it was listed as a top us public coarse. No way is this a top us coarse!

Lawsonia was beat up and not worth $125.
It is muni-level course.
Has great potential though with a fun setup.
Do not make a special trip/stop to play this course.
It isn’t well maintained.
They didn’t have any range balls to hit and after the round I saw the range balls they did have and they were junk.

★ 2

Too many blind shots and hidden bunkers. It was like Groundhog Day. Drastically elevated greens protect 3 sides with narrow run up areas on almost every hole. Even when you hit the green, it rolled off and left you with a sand shot where you could barely see the top of the flag. I get it - links golf. And that’s great on a few holes - but 6-10’ elevated greens on every hole? Creative…. Greens and fairways were very nice condition and greens were true and fast. Practice area had very sparse grass and was also blind. Couldn’t see past 90 yd marker. Not worth the trip. Don’t understand why this gets rated so highly. Service was lacking. Honestly wouldn’t play it again if it were free.

Played Lawsonia Links 7/27/24, two first timers and two vets of the course.
Course was in good shape overall but all other parts of the experience were sub optimal.
Arrived an hour early.
Two motorcycle carts in lot when we arrived, asked about their availability and were told they weren’t available. Golfer paying after us received one of the cycles.
No range balls. Said they’d pick the range quick and they didn’t. Hit a few scratch balls still left on the range. Easily 60 empty buckets littered the range. Range was essentially sand with very thin grass.
Went to order pre round beverages and bar staff seemed overwhelmed and it was an inconvenience when they were out of what I ordered and didn’t seem to have time to grab another bottle.
Shack at the turn was out of food. Only cold sandwiches ready in the clubhouse.
One cart was dead at the turn.
Bev cart never found us on the back. Had to intercept the bev cart from the Woodlands on 17.
Pace of played was horrid. 30 minutes behind at the turn and 60 minutes behind by the end. Ranger popped out during the back but pace never improved. Waited on every single tee box.
Left immediately after our round.
Sent an email and social media message to see if they cared to comment on our experience rather than posting publicly hoping it was an exception and not the norm. Never heard back so I sense they don’t care.
For a similar price, I’d suggest you can find a far better experience.

This course is nowhere near the way it used to be. I brought a buddy up who was very excited to play, and it couldn't have been more disappointing. When booking, I could only obtain 2 spots, but when I arrived, they had me as a 4 some. Strike 1. The driving range was in terrible shape, hitting out of just dead grass, and sand was not ideal. Strike 2. The pace of play for a Monday at 1140am was completely UNACCEPTABLE - waiting anywhere from 13 to 20 minutes for almost every shot was not great for getting any type of rhythm. Strike 3. If Lawsonia wants to be a top 100 public course, there needs to be ALOT of changes. I'm thankful that I didn't have to pay the full price today. What is advertised and what you actually get are two very different things, unfortunately.

Clearly gets by on reputation alone from the “rankings” list. I’ve only seen one other recent review that seems accurate. This course would be just fine as a $50-$75 muni track you went to with your buddies for some casual golf.
The “driving range” was simply a giant sand pit with no sign of a blade of grass. At 9am no balls were available to grab and it took about 20 minutes for them to refill the dispensing bin that you scoop balls out of.

The Links course reminded me of the cheap munis I grew up playing in north Texas.

Finally pace of play was ABYSMAL! No one was out to encourage the slow groups to pick up their pace. From 7-13 we waited over 10 minutes on each tee box. Overall this was an unacceptable experience for a course that is supposedly top 100 in the country.

Truly exceptional experience with The Golf Courses of Lawsonia... golf course quality including tee boxes, greens, cart paths, signage, you name it... plus accommodations, staff, food, pro shop, etc. were all highly regarded by my entire group of 24 guys. Working with Adam Swenson for our large group outing was effortless. We stayed 12 and 12 in the Birches and Moreau houses which are located a short golf cart ride up from the property. Each golfer had their own bed, ample space, and was the perfect setting for a group guys trip. Don't sleep on this destination! Pictures do not do the grounds justice and I know that there are more upgrades and renovations to come for this property. Outstanding.

As other recent posters commented. The marketing company Lawsonia uses to promote their Links Course is a master at manipulation. Keep in mind we drove 6 hours because we thought we would be playing something special. The course we played was not a top 100 course nor worth $125 greens fees. Goat paths… I mean cart paths, many bare spots on the course, pace of play during the week was terrible, 4:05 mins for 15 holes. Zero marshal presence to move the pace of play along. To their credit the greens were good and the cart girl was regular which did not benefit us non drinkers. I have played courses in North Central Minnesota that blow this place away and are $85.00 during the week with GPS. Sorry Lawsonia, This is a $60.00 course at best.

Great course, this is a links course. The course is in great shape. People looking for a lush course aren't used to playing links courses. The blind shots and elevated greens were a challenge. Everything you would expect from a top 100 course. The woodlands was lush and green as expected.

First let me say we were excited to play the Links course. It was $125 little steep but from what I saw on the internet in pictures it looked fantastic but as we paid our money got carted up everybody was very nice but as we went to the driving range it was tore up pretty good. Then onto the First Tee let me add starter was very nice and funny made you feel at ease. Tee boxs and Fairways very dry and burned out I was disappointed that a course of that magnitude rated in the top 100? would not water tee boxes and Fairways? The greens were fast and fun with the undulations enjoyed that. Would not pay that price again for this course worth Maybe $60 or $70 for the condition it is in.

Admittedly it has been a long time since I played Lawsonia, it is not the course I remembered. Gone are many of the trees that made the woodlands course both daunting and picturesque. Gone are the water features that made it a magical place. While the course itself is both well kept and challenging for a hacker like myself the bloom is off the rose so to speak. The attention to detail that made this place special are gone and has turned into lust another golf course.

I think for the price you can do better. 135.00 for the links course? It’s a 75.00 course at best. Bumpy greens, terrible cart paths, sand traps under construction and they couldn’t even put water in the ball washer. Staff was friendly enough but the course was not busy at all? Could it be the price? I guess since its in Green Lake, all the Chicago people think it a great deal.

I had high expectations for playing the links course. I feel I was left underwhelmed with the course. Part of the problem was due to work being done on the bunkers. The price was not reflected in this and it should have been much cheaper to play a course when construction is going on. It is a nice experience playing the course with elevated greens, I just don’t see the course being a top 100 public course. $90 for a round in late fall is just to much.

Was very excited for a trip to lawsonia from chicago. Played both courses, stayed on property and dined for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Overall experience was completely underwhelming.
Starts with the driving range. No grass to put a golf ball down on. But wait then you look up. The entire range is you looking at a hill. You can see your golf ball for 70 yards then nothing. Then the putting green is completely slanted. Not a flat put any where.

Woodlands is a very good layout. Problem is greens were punched and sanded.
Links course is way overhyped. Very bland golf. Par 3s are good but other than that very plain links course. $130 in the middle of no where. Not worth it. Marketing department deserves a huge raise.
Lodging is a little dungy. No working lights
The food at the restaurant is ok and fairly priced. Except stay away from the house made chips and sweet potato fries. Both burned and over cooked. Only saving graces was the staff. Very pleasant and helpful.

To sum things up any other course In Wisconsin is a better bet.

A truly unique experience for the visiting golfer and well worth the travel and modest green fee. For golfers considering a visit soon, be aware that many of the bunkers on the Links course are currently being renovated and are basically unplayable. Don’t let this stop your visit, however. Adjust expectations and enjoy the course and the value!

Lawsonia is one of the best golf courses in Wisconsin by far! Great staff and hospitality. I proposed to my girlfriend on the 18th green. I told the staff ahead of time that I was planning on doing it. They made sure that we weren’t paired with strangers since it was just the two of us. Plus, you can bring your dog on the course. What’s better than that?

Played Woodlands Oct 4 and Links October 5.
First up Woodlands...

Given past negative reviews, can say bunker renovation seems done. Traps no problem, actually better sand than Links. Couple good holes on front, including 2 and 3. Course flexes with great hole routes on 13 through 17. 18 a dud. Tees bit beat up... small tees, lots of play.

Today was Links... was blown away. All the nuances and unique qualities described by all in the reviews . Great shape, firm and fast greens. Almost all shots into green play elevated - yardage is all carry plus. Severe mounding provides sightlines and definition of target lines.

Hole 7 is a great par 3. In general, front nine routing a bit better. Back nine all plays east of clubhouse, all 9 holes lay out over the view sight, so front is better in that regard.

Staff attentive and nice. Restaurant decent bar food and drinks ok.

Played before 8 am both days so did not experience slow play, but given afternoon crowds could see that as a problem. No sign of any Marshall's either course.

Have played Koehler and Sand Valley a bunch. Links just as good at a fraction of the price.

Underwhelming. I was really excited to play here. The pro shop is super outdated. The range was up hill and you could see your shots for about 70 yards and then gone. Overall the layout of the course was what I expected and overall really cool. The biggest bummer was water damage all over every fairway and the greens had ball marks everywhere that were filled with sand. I just can’t get myself to come back until conditions are improved. I wouldn’t be shocked to see this course fall off USA top 100 public courses.

Very disappointed, the greens were not taken care of, ball marks not repaired, the tee boxes weren't level and had divots all over the place, the sand traps were more like cement traps, and it took 5 hours for 18, not well managed by the marshals

Took my son out for a round on The Woodlands course. What a beautiful course! Not 1 bad hole on the course. Greens were tricky to read, but a lot of fun. Fairways challenging, and the layout is great.
The experience was great for our 1st time there. Everyone is friendly in the clubhouse. Highly recommend golfing here. We will definitely be back!

Played both courses for 1st time 8/30/21.
Woodland course tight in many spots. Good conditions. Enjoyed. A little too tight for me on a few spots, golfing skill issue.
Links course an absolute throwback. Beautiful and fun. Tough, but trouble all right there to see. Bunkers unraked and hard, but enough sand and I just figured part of throwback feel. If you can’t handle that, too bad for you. Conditions great otherwise. Hit from fairway, ball stops. Hit from rough, it does not. Greens quick and very true, but hardest to read maybe ever played. Staff excellent. Beverage cart, Pam, a jewel. 4 stars may seem low, call it 4.5, I never give a 5. Will return.

Played the woodlands after having played both courses in the past. Very disappointed. The course was in terrible condition as they’re looking to remove fairway bunkers (which I disagree with), so many areas under repair. Wasn’t mentioned in the clubhouse or reflected in the price. Hole 10 was nearly unplayable and we had to play through the sprinklers in the middle of the day.

Had the pleasure of getting to play the links course at Lawsonia. I have heard nothing bad about this place. The drive in and the surrounding area is beautiful. The clubhouse and pub are all nice. The pub opens early if you need that bloody mary in the morning. They had 3 beer cart girls going which was great. The course has some awesome holes and the green complexes are about as unique as it gets. You better hit those greens. Off the tee is more then generous especially on the back 9. Course plays pretty short as well. The greens were definitely inconsistent as it looked like there was a problem with the mower that day. The experience was great. It was a tad on the expensive side and the range was lack luster. I would recommend anyone in Wisconsin to give this course a go. You will enjoy it.

Course was beautiful and also challenging. Reason for the 4/5 stars is because after playing 18 our group of four decided to go in for food and some drinks. We walked in and asked the waitress/host if we could sit anywhere and she responded with yes and gave us menus. Found a table, for the next 20 minutes we were overlooked. No one ever came to take a food or drink order. When we spoke up with an “excuse me” we were answered with a sarcastic wave and a rude toned “did you check in” to which we replied “yes, we checked in with you”. Another sarcastic “really?” Was the answer of the waitress. I’ve never been treated like that from a waitress. So if you want to play golf play lawsonia. If you want to eat or drink you’re better off going anywhere else.

The Links Course is a quality test of golf, but it does not live up to its reputation of a Golf Digest top 100 public course in the country. While firm, fast, and challenging, the greens were covered in dead spots from un-repaired ball marks. The only employee that even acknowledged or cared if I had ever been there was the starter. The rest of the "kids" and they were kids...were too busy watching The Office or on their phones in the golf shop.

Played The Woodlands course the next day...stay far, far away from this course. Do not waste your money. Go somewhere else. The course is in horrible shape. There was construction on at least 2 holes (we were not told about this when making tee times or while checking in) most of the bunkers have either not enough sand, none at all, are getting overgrown with grass, or have so many rocks, clay, hardpan, or just so much mud you can't even play a shot. And there are are lot of bunkers on this course. There are also numerous areas that are obviously old bunkers that were simply filled in and allowed to just grow wild. They don't have nice thick lush rough like the rest of the course. It's crabgrass, weeds, and more hardpan. Just garbage. I wouldn't pay $25 to play this course in it's current condition.

Very surprised. Have played both courses many times over the last 15 years and this is the worst I have seen them. Easy to see that no money is being put into the course and the Woodlands is being ruined by a half hearted attempt to remove many fairway bunkers. What a shame because Lawsonia used to be a great golf destination!

Do NOT golf the Woodlands at this time if you have a choice between the 2 courses (Links & Woodlands). Lawsonia is charging the same price for both courses. And while the Links is in great shape, the Woodlands has suffered. I golfed the Woodlands on Aug. 14th and the tee boxes were in horrible shape. The existing bunkers were not raked by my 9am tee time and a lot of them had significant sized rocks in them. Some of the greens had pebbles ingrained in them. Add that to a slow round and poor beverage cart service on the front 9, and it wasn't what I come to expect from Lawsonia.

Underwhelmed honestly. The bunkers were awful, the carts died on my group 4 times in 4 rounds, and for a destination course with so many blind approach shots you would think they would have pin location sheets or at the very least color coded flags. Glad the lodging was cheap (probably why there was no wifi) because the courses (which have phenomenal potential to be emaculate) were not worth the price.
