The smash burger was gross. Please consider removing it from the menu. It contained two thin preformed patties directly from the freezer. The burgers were extremely dry and difficult to eat.
Did anyone try this before selling it customers?
Giving it two stars because the shared appetizers were decent. Just don't order the smash burger.

I was frequent business traveler this summer. I stayed at the Embassy Suites around the corner. This was my go to spot 1-2 times each week. The food was delicious and in summer time I really enjoyed the Strawberry tart beer and the pretzel board appetizer. Once summer was over I enjoyed the German Pilsner since I’m not much of an IPA drinker. I highly recommend you order the full size Liter since you’re likely to order more than one pint. I always had friendly hosts and servers. Once college started there were a couple servers that were less than par but I took it in stride as we all were new at our jobs at one point. I dined on the patio garden area twice. I brought my English Cream Golden once and he really loved it too! I highly recommend this place.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding Beer-Braised Salmon at The Great Dane!
I tried the Beer-Braised Salmon at The Great Dane in Madison, and it blew me away. The salmon was perfectly seared — tender and full of flavor — and the Peck’s Pilsner cream sauce tied everything together beautifully. The leeks and baby spinach added a fresh, earthy touch, and the garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and rich, the perfect side to soak up that amazing sauce.
For only $20, it felt like a fine-dining meal at a hometown favorite. You can really taste the quality ingredients and the care that goes into each dish. Paired with one of their craft beers, it’s easily one of the best meals you can get in Madison for the price.
If you go to The Great Dane, order the Beer-Braised Salmon — you won’t regret it. 🍺🐟

We were seated immediately in their outdoor patio which is very cute and comfortable. We ordered the cheese curds, fish tacos and Thai noodles, all of which were great but the cheese curds were the best I’ve ever had. Ryan, our server did a very nice job.

A couple of my friends and I stopped in for a late dinner as we were passing through the area. I got the Korean rice bowl and a side of cheese curds. My food was delicious. The rice bowl was bursting with flavor and everything in it was cooked to perfection. The cheese curds were decent, but the chimichurri ranch dressing was what really made them amazing. We dined in on a Monday evening and wasn’t expecting for this place to be so busy and noisy. Nothing bad about that necessarily, it just wasn’t what we were expecting on a weekday evening. Seems like a great hangout spot for college students, as that was who was mostly there. This just made for a very occupied server resulting in less attention to our needs and longer wait times. My overall take on the place is still a positive one. Cute restaurant and a decent sized one, at that.

Definitely ask about garden seating!! We were a little nervous when it involved walking downstairs past the servers area but omg it was so beautiful and a perfect date spot. Servers were super kind about checking nutrition facts for me, my steak salad was so delicious! Loved it.

We lived in Madison years ago and loved the Great Dane but it’s really gone down in quality. Our group ordered a burger, sandwich, two baked cods, and two mac n cheeses. The fish arrived cold and very overcooked. The other dishes were just mediocre, not good enough to justify the price. The atmosphere was so loud we couldn’t talk. The only reason I’m not giving the experience one star is because the server was great.

Good for darts and pool. Decent food for a glorified bar. Eh on their beer taps, their taps are nothing special. Mixed drinks priced for a downtown bar. Bartenders will skip your TouchTunes if they don’t like it, and play 43 minute songs and tell you they can’t skip it if they don’t like the songs you are playing

The food was very mediocre, the atmosphere was cool and a nice set up. The service after 930 pm was bad because it was only the bartender serving everyone!! We were traveling and got in town late. Don’t order the clam chowder 🤢 not good at all!! The salmon with potatoes wand the watery gravy was decent, the fish and chips….OIL CITY!!! So much oil and grease! Madison do better for late night eating on a Friday night!

We headed here with the intention of having lunch before the beer festival and take their comp bus.
So we had lunch here around 11am ish and I had their Baja Fish Tacos. I added an extra 1 for a 3 pack and what a great call I made! They were fresh and delicious! I passed on the beans and some of the rice but the salsas they provided were straight fire!
Time for the shuttle after lunch but whoops, too crowded! So we did a cab and that was fine.
Our server was friendly and did forget a few things but they were crowded but y'all still get a 5 star rating.
We'd def come back next time we are in the Capitol city.

AMAZING. Food, beer, atmosphere, dessert - Yes! Go it’s amazing!
I-5 IPA and Peck’s Pilsne
The boneless wings are incredibly crunchy and sooo good! We tried Caribbean jerk and Korean BBQ (sauce on side). Korean BBQ- best flavors!
Cheese curds. Wow that sauce was delish!
Southwest Burger- grilled perfectly medium, so much flavor in the burger alone- toppings were added bonus.
House salad with ranch- the best salad toppings and the ranch is excellent.
Go!! Try if!!!

My feedback is solely for this particular location; we've definitely had better experiences elsewhere. As a family of six with two young children, we were seated in the bar area instead of the family seating area. A significant issue was a missed order, which we didn't realize until the rest of our food arrived. Our server's check-ins were infrequent, leading to delays when we needed drink refills and the check.

In a world where many breweries seem to be caught between a race to see who can compress the most hops into an IPA and how effectively they can rob flavors from a gumball machine, it is comforting to wander into a brewpub that smells like brewing and taste beers that taste like they believe there is still joy to be found in innovation and experimentation with making beer that tastes like beer.

The Great Dane was BEYOND FANTASTIC!! We had a super kind-hearted server named Lourdes who could not have been any nicer! Beer selection was tremendous! My husband and I are in town for vacation and decided to try the Great Dane. For context, we stopped in 2 hours before closing so in my opinion we should not have been treated so poorly. I have never felt more invisible. The sign stated to seat yourself and we did. Gave it a few minutes (5-10), made eye contact with staff, tried waving them down- and nothing, no service. Called the restaurant phone number in case we were doing something wrong, was told they’d be right with us and they still took a few minutes to come talk to us and let us put in an order. The rest of the crowd slowly filtered out so you’d think we might then get normal service and that was not the case. Waiter brought the food and did not check back in again. Waiter made eye contact while waving him down for drink refills and he did not come over so after 10 minutes we gave up and never got those refills. This could have been such a memorable dining experience that we would come back to again in the future, since the food was so good, but we left feeling bad for stepping foot inside.

We dined at the Downtown Great Dane on a very cold February mid-afternoon. We sat at a booth in the bar & had a very attentive & helpful server who doubled as the bartender. We had margaritas & crop circle wheat beer with the appetizer charcuterie board. The board was very good and I had a very good, hearty soup.
The location has off street parking, a large facility, great food / choices and Great Dane beers, as well as other beers.
Enjoyable place, food / drink & personnel!

Man in a dress literally followed my daughter into the girls bathroom, because ownership is totally cool with that. (See pictures) It would be different if these were single stall locking restrooms. They are not. This is a public bathroom with multiple stalls and urinals (For MEN). It's bad enough that you have propaganda in your customers face in the bar and dining room. This is way too far. This is disgusting. 2 thumbs down will never patronize this business again.
Learn what business your in and what you're in it. Serve good beer and food, and provide great service. Leave your politics at home where they belong.

This place has all the things you’re gonna want to try while in Wisconsin and made at its very best. That includes food, beers and the harder stuff. A stone’s throw from the capital, it is really the ultimate Madison experience. The only downside is the crowds and inevitable wait. I suggest giving your name and then walking around the capital until you receive your text.

my father and i went to brunch on a very slow saturday. we were some of the only people in the restaurant. the host who sat us was very nice and chatty, i think her name was claudia. it took over 10 minutes for our server to come and greet us. we had to flag over the host because we hasn’t even received waters yet. she was super helpful and finally got our server to come over. his name was brian and it was probably the worst service i’d experienced. he forgot our sides and hardly checked in. the food was pretty good, but for the restaurant being empty i would’ve expected better service.

Really good food, we stopped here on our way through Madison. Lots of seating, not too loud. They asked about allergies right away. Our server was really nice and attentive; he actually checked in to make sure my coffee was fresh and hot enough. I love that their basic coffee didn't tatse burnt, that is a rare thing from pub coffee.
The creme brulee oatmeal is so good, can't recommend that enough.
Edited to add:
They have a wheel chair lift to the main restroom and lower section of the pub, and all gender restrooms on the main floor.
Also signage taking a stand that they do not tolerate hate speech and encouraging you to speak with a bartender or manager if anyone makes you feel unsafe.

What a great bar! Tons of space. They’ve got pool tables and darts. Sports on the TVs. A lot of great beers on tap. I particularly enjoyed the Peck’s Pilsner. For food, I of course had to get the cheese curds and the fish tacos were surprisingly good (beware the yellow habanero sauce, it’s SPICY!). The service was top notch thanks to Aliza behind the bar and Maisy who I think is one of the managers. They deserve a raise. 10/10 highly recommend.

I made a reservation for a large party to celebrate my birthday, which required signing a contract with a minimum spend. Unfortunately, life happened and four of my guests couldn't make it on the day of the reservation. Despite this, we were still held to meet the minimum spend without the option to purchase gift cards instead. While I understand the contract terms, it feels unreasonable to require such an agreement just for a large table in the dining room. Additionally, we were seated by the pool tables area, which didn't feel as special as the main dining room would have. We were also asked to leave promptly after two hours, without any updates on how close we were to meeting the minimum spend. In the last 10 minutes of our reservation, it was impossible to consume an additional $120 worth of services. I am really disappointed and unlikely to return anytime soon.

Ordering from the bar because no one approaches the table after a long time sitting, to get the most undrinkable cocktail ever, I had to ask another bartender from the other floor to remake it and thank her I was able to drink it, you must know if you want to be having a drink in the bar by the pool tables the bartenders ARE NOT GOING TO CARE about you.

Extremely disappointed! Great Dane used to be one of my favorite places in Madison to eat, so I was shocked when I came in this weekend and discovered the changes to their food menu. No more brussels sprouts, which was genuinely the best appetizer on their menu. No more poutine either, which would have been a very close second place, especially with winter coming up.
I ordered the mac and cheese, which I've had multiple times over the years, and discovered they now make it completely differently, and not in a good way. The cheese sauce that I asked for to dip my pretzel in was watery and chalky. The sauce on the cheese was clumpy and very poorly mixed. They even switched to using a different kind of noodles, which wouldn't be a problem except the new noodles end up extremely crunchy on the top of the dish and soggy and overdone on the bottom. It's obvious the kitchen hasn't taken these changes into account when making the food. My partner ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich and found the sauce on it is different than it used to be, which makes the sandwich taste awful. The jambalaya my friend ordered also tasted totally different, very mild with very little spice.
Just extremely disappointed in the kitchen at GD and its obvious downgrade in quality. We will not be coming back to eat there again.

The two bartenders are not enjoyable! It wasn’t busy but they never checked on us and seemed bothered by being asked by other customers and even staff to do their jobs. Frankly, they shouldn’t work at a place called The Great Dane. Dogs are friendly. They should work at a place called The Cat Shack because cats are snobby and unfriendly. They will push your drink off the edge of the bar and still charge you. That would totally be these two bartenders. lol.

We've heard so much about Wisconsin and its cheese curds, and we looked forward to trying some. We found The Great Dane Pub & Brewing through a Google search, specifically for fried cheese curds. The menu items look great, I wanted to try everything. We got the cheese curds for our appetizer. To our surprise, they were on the crunchier-hard end, barely tasting the cheese. We thought it was the norm for fried cheese curds until we tried cheese curds the next day at a different restaurant, and they were amazing!
My brisket Mac & Cheese, the pastas were too el dentê and the brisket slices were hard and dried. It would have tasted better if the brisket was shredded with a little BBQ sauce or even simmered in some sauce, then baked with pasta and cheese.
My house salad with ranch dressing was delicious. Nothing beats a house ranch. You guys did great with that! Next time, I would like to try the pot pie. My friend had it, and he said it was delish along with the side of cinnamon apples.

came in after a Badger game. it was busy but we got seated right away. we then waited over 30 minutes for anyone to even come to the table. we sent someone up to the host stand to see if our server had been notified we were sat or just to get some waters. server came over shortly after with little apology. we figured food would take a while since it was busy, no problem. we didn’t expect to get a nacho app that was clearly under the heat lamp for a long time, and 3 out of the 4 main dishes that were room temp. 1 dish was piping hot and anything from the fryer was cold. the float person was more helpful than the server. they brought our food and took away dirty dishes.
it would be a great place to just grab a beer. the staff are not prepared to serve tables or cook food.

The cheese curds that were served to us were straight up room temp. They had probably been sitting out for more than an hour. I let our server know when she eventually came back to the table but she was not really all that concerned. Asked if we actually wanted her to have her manager discount them. I was surprised at the lack of concern. Our sandwiches were mediocre, we had to ask twice for some napkins, and our drinks ran dry. Maybe we just got them on an off night but it just wasn't a good experience at all.

A true Madison staple! Later at night on the weekends during the school year it is a bar bar, but it's nice that the restaurant and bar area are separate so it's a great dinner spot anytime.
I'm always shocked how they're able to nail seemingly all of their dishes despite having an eclectic menu, highly recommend for any mood you're in.
The bar area has TVs and bar games (lots of pool tables, darts, etc.) and they make a wide range of tasty beers.
Parking will always be tricky as they're right off the square. It's a really big place so there is almost always available seating.

Really impressed with the gluten sensitivity selection! Lots of different sandwiches to choose from and the gluten free bun was excellent- it held together throughout the whole sandwich eating process and didn’t taste like it was 100% udi’s rice flour either. Many of the sides are also made without gluten, although the kitchen does warn that they are not a gluten free environment and cross contamination can occur. For my level of sensitivity, the fries in a shared fryer were safe and delicious and the sweet plantain slices were also very good!

Vast drink menu, good food, and casual but classy atmosphere. Lots of indoor seating available. Plenty of TVs tuned to various sports. Multiple pool tables available. The waitstaff was very prompt and filled our orders in good time. However, we had to wait a long time for the bill. I had the Rueben, which was very good. The waffle fries were perfectly seasoned and as good as any I’ve ever had.
Bathrooms on the main floor are clean, but are gender neutral with multiple stalls, meaning men and women will be sharing simultaneously, which creeped out my female companion. Fortunately, there are gender-specific bathrooms in the basement.
No parking specific to this restaurant, but there is street parking and public parking structures with a few blocks.

The wedding shower was also a Star Wars themed shower and the Great Dane team went out of their way (food signs and table signs) to REALLY reinforce the theme- very tastefully! I would HIGHLY recommend anyone hold an event at the Great Dane. On the day of the shower, the onsite support staff- Hayley and the 3 awesome young men that were our servers- made sure our guests were comfortable and well taken care of! Special shout-out to the owners- they have hired a fabulous staff!

I ordered the zesty lime shrimp salad and it was delicious. The waitress was super friendly and we had the opportunity to sample some of the beer before we selected what we wanted to order. I would definitely go back to this restaurant.

Visited late evening and came for the beer. Kitchen closed so I cannot vouch for the food, but the house brew lineup was solid. Fairly diverse lineup and enjoyed every one I tried. Cozy pub feel located downtown just off the capitol square. Bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Great option for a draft when you’re in Madison.

The Great Dane really hits the marks for a great lunch or dinner spot. The menu has enough variety that everyone can find something to enjoy. The service was fast and friendly and our food arrived quickly even during the lunch rush. Everything was prepared well and tasted great. I would definitely come back to try some of their house brews and more of their food.

Went in for a drink and they rang a loud bell for last call. Immediately after, they turned the lights on. All of this seems reasonable to me. What didn't feel reasonable was turning the music up as high as they could in order to make people leave. I almost got a drink during last call but thankfully I didn't or my ear drums would have been blown. Wouldn't recommend going here at night

They turned the volume up to the max. It was impossible to stay inside. I think I might lose my hearing after being here. Unacceptable.

They randomly turned up the volume of the speakers to max just to get people out of the building right at bar close. Not cool at all, that's how you ruin people's hearing for life. Just turn off the music.

My partner and I were just strolling the square when we soon came upon an unassuming pub. We like beer. So we said YES! Best decision I’ve ever made next to calling my sweetie my wife. We took seats at the bar, not expecting much. To our surprise we were greeted with the warmest smile and an unmatched wisdom of the Great Dane. Our bartender Mikaela gave us a night to remember.

Food is okay. Most annoying thing, we booked a reservation for a large group and the waitress told us the bill “can’t be split this late at night” which of course isn’t a thing. The large sum just gave her a bigger tip but inconvenient for the group.

It's been a years now we continue to go to this place on regular basis for their in house brews and signature habenaro chicken wings. The food is delicious and very good. The Ambience also provides a nice experience. Place which should not be missed of anyone visiting Madison. Not to forget their crop circle brew.

We had wonderful service!
We tried the cheese curds(the sauce was the best part), the pretzel board (Yum!!), and my entree was the birria tacos.
I loved the wood throughout the building but didn't love the stairs or how far away the bathroom was. It would be tough for someone with mobility issues.
Overall, everything was great, and it was a place I'd absolutely stop in again if I ever found myself near the Majestic for another show.

Plus for being open late.
Minus for pounding music making it hard to talk or think.
Bartender was too busy to serve me a flight of beer, but not too busy to chat with buddies.
If you love good beer you can skip this place. Go to Giant Jones Brewing instead if they are open.

It's my first time dining in this pub. I found it because it's close to my hotel. I came in around 2pm, I sat at the bar and ordered the Boneless wing with Korean BBQ sauce and I was recommended to have the old glory Apa. I don't like light beer and this Apa was definitely the right choice. The chicken was well battered and fried, they were so tender.
The portion was good enough for lunch.
Congratulations to the new opening of the Japan branch and I bought a pack of their Sendai recipe beer.
The bartender was very friendly, helpful and he gave me a token for a pint. I guess I will come back very soon.

Buyer beware! Had a pint of beer @ $4 during happy hour. Then thought I would try a specialty draft. Much to my surprise the cost escalated to 8$ per pint, which I was not aware of. Would have been nice to know before I ended up spending almost $40 on 5 fairly good beers.

Can’t say enough about this great place. Walked in and was a little nervous because it was very noisy but happily I found the restaurant part was on the other side from the bar! We ordered famous Wisconsin cheese curds which were by far the best I’ve had. Husband got the fish fry which he said was perfect. The French onion soup was incredible. I ordered a salad which was absolutely loaded with all the great things I love in a salad…Granny Smith apples, dried cranberries, walnuts, Gorgonzola cheese and field greens! I’ve never had so many walnuts in a salad ever and that’s my favorite part. Actually we went there because of that salad. So I would recommend this restaurant and driving down there you get a great view of the capitol.

Delicious meal at this pub! We ordered the cheese curds and pretzel board and enjoyed these appetizers and accompanying dips. The atmosphere of the place is nice, especially being in a cozy pub on a cold day. For mains, we ordered the shepherd’s pie and harvest bowl. Both were quite tasty! Impressed by the quality of food and large portion sizes.

Not sure how it usually is, but I came here on Thanksgiving for their Traditional Turkey Dinner and it was a terrible experienced. $20 seemed like a decent price, but ever item on my plate was cold and congealed, none of it tasted as if it was fresh or even cooked recently, and my turkey was so dry the muscle fibers had dried out and turned white in places. My server Liam tried his absolute best to completely ignore me. I had to seat myself, wait 10 minutes to order a fountain drink and water. Waited 5 minutes for those drinks. Then waited 30 minutes for my food and Liam literally never came to my table again after that. I had to stop him between other tables to get a drink refill and then went up to the bar to request a check and a to-go box for my 90% uneaten food. He then added incorrect items to my ticket which i had to wait to get taken off while he went to another table. I all but sprinted out of there. I understand conditions are hard working on Thanksgiving, but just close if you’re going to have food and service this abysmal. I’ve been treated better and had fresher food cooked to order more often at McDonalds.

We visited with nine people on Sunday to celebrate an engagement. We waited about 20 minutes for a server to acknowledge us. He took a drink order and never returned. About 20 more minutes passed and a new server showed up and told us that they would now be taking care of us. Waited again for drinks. Once we finally got our food my burger was not even warm and the sweet potato fries were a cold greasy mess. Not very happy to get a bill for $243 for absolutely awful service and poor food.
