Update, 07/25/25; as with many eating establishments they are running short staff resulting in having a limited menu and some delays. Be patient, treat the staff kindly and just go with the flow!!! I love their clam chowder but that will not be back on the menu till fall. We all have to do our part. Best clam chowder I've had-and i love clam chowder. Pan fried perch & blue gills are the tops and the potato pancakes closely resemble Jewish ones. Order an ice cream after dinner for a delicious 'splurge'

The worst service ever! 20 minutes for the waitress to even ask if we wanted to drink, no water brought so we ordered drinks and appetizers at the same time. She forgot to put the appetizers in. Went to talk to a manager and they didn't even care an hour after we got there and still no food. Half the menu is whited out because it's not available. Don't believe what you see online.

Wish we would have tried this place sooner. Fish fry was delicious. Loved that nothing was greasy or left a slimy taste. Fresh hot food and we will definitely be back. The cheese curds were so good, same for the mushrooms, and the ranch was delicious. Raspberry Mojito was delicious and suggested by our server. She made the experience wonderful. Very attentive, loved every thing about our Friday fish fried dinner. Portion sizes are huge! Pretty being in the river. Can’t wait for the patio season.

We love Heron's Landing. It has a unique ambience; historic reniniscence of early Jefferson, a wonderful outdoor patio set on the banks of the Rock River, Matt the bartender is one of the best mixologist around and the food is not only well prepared but the diverse menu seems to please a variety of palates.

Have gone for lunch many times and carried out. I have loved everything I have tried. I love the Dam Burger, the Gobbler. Potato Boats are always a good choice for an appetizer. They have the best homemade chips of anywhere I've been. People are always friendly there and helpful. The location is great, too. Worth a stop if you're travelling through or by Jefferson or if you live nearby. Very Wisconsin :))

2nd time here. Great location on the river, even in winter. Was quiet when we visited but the decor is homely and cosy and the service friendly and efficient. Decent burger but outstanding Bloody Mary. The Glarus beer on tap is stand out. Shame it’s only available in Wisconsin….

This place has very good food at a reasonable price , we loved the fish we had on Friday night and the onion rings are amazing. They are always very friendly and attentive to the tables, and sitting outside by river is a plus. Jefferson is a small town but every time we go we enjoy. 😇😎

When we first moved to the area in late 2019 we went here and thought it was great. We tried to go during the summer of 2020 and service was so awful that we ended up walking out after waiting for about 20 minutes for a host to greet and seat us and no one ever came, we were ignored by staff, etc.

Fast forward to May 2023 and we decided to give them another shot since it had been a while and service was excellent. The host was polite and quick. Server was great, recommending food and drinks, making polite conversation, and quick. Mojitos with fresh grown mint were fantastic, fried asparagus spears, bluegill fish fry with potato pancakes, and hamburger were all delicious. We will be going back and maybe eventually upgrade the rating to 5-stars :)

The service was fantastic and the duck poppers were awesome. The dam burger had great flavor and with the kraut and cranberry mustard, was over the top. The jam on the dam burger looked killer and my wife LOVED the bacon jam. I moved away about 30 years ago, but I'll be making a point of stopping in when I'm in town from now on.

If you are wanting something different for your palette, this is the place to go! From duck poppers to bacon wrapped kielbasa, they have a wide range for those with an adventurous palettes! Even though they have beer(pilsner & others) I was able to pair with a good tasting merlot.
I highly recommend checking this place out & the riverview was a bonus! And the waitress/hostess was fast & on top of it. Never had to wait more than 2 minutes for anything including sauces from the kitchen!
We will be coming back here even of a special trip is needed!

On the plus side, the service overall was prompt and pleasant, the price for a Friday fish fry was very reasonable, and views of the Rock River from the large windows were lovely. The fried cod came out with a nice, brown crust, but it was completely unseasoned, bland and flavorless. It also smelled a bit to "fishy." The potato pancakes had a nice flavor, but were served cold. When I mentioned it to our server - she said she would tell the kitchen staff, but no other remedies were offered. Again, the service was otherwise great. We'll try the restaurant again for something else, but won't be returning for a fish fry any time soon.

Really beautiful historic spot right on the river with some cool lawn art and historic pictures inside. They offer a good selection of food and nice sized beer and drink list! The house chips are some of best I ever had! Our burger and steak were good, but were in dire need of some salt/seasoning. Will be back in summer to check out the patio. The host we had on the Saturday we came was also excellent, very inviting environment with bar and seating area nice separated as well!

Had lunch today( St Patty’s Day )at Heron’s Landing and was very disappointed. Ordered Corn beef and cabbage but got no cabbage,Brussels sprouts instead. The corn beef was awful ! Tough and dried out couldn’t cut it with knife and couldn’t chew the meat.Was not happy spending $40.00 on two meals that wasn’t edible. The carrots and potatoes I ate weren’t bad. This is not the first time we had gone there for St Patty’s day but it will be the last!!

What a beautiful place to sit outside by water and eat. I must say I’ve been there before and the food was ok. But today may 2 the food was exceptional very good. Presentation of food excellent. I watched what other people got and it all looked so fantastic. Really looked over board nice. Our food was so great. Tasted wonderful. I was so happy I brought someone there for first time. They are still talking about it. The only thing was the waitress never came back to us. Drinks or how was it. We waited forever for our bill. Now there was a good amount of people there. But still you should be able to handle this. I was a waitress also and I never egnored anyone. She was ok but could have been a lot better. It’s not hard. Takes 5 seconds to make sure your people are ok. Great place. Can’t wait to go again

Our first experience was really good. We were the only ones and we served by the owner. Had a great prime rib & duck poppers. The place looks good and the outdoor setting is fantastic.
Second time not so great. We took it to go as it is early 2021 so still no wide spread vaccine. None of the chefs were wearing masks in the kitchen. Some servers often had their masks down under their chin in & out of the kitchen. I really just don’t understand why that’s acceptable. The chicken caprese wrap was dry chicken, lettuce and a tomato slice. No cheese. Barely a hint of sauce. The heron chicken sandwich was pretty good with all the ingredients. Duck popper are still fun but a bit dry.

Ate here Sunday for the first and probably last time. Nice restaurant with a cool location and interior. However service was very poor. The young man serving us sat at a bar table watching the game instead of checking on our tables. I got up twice to get our drinks refilled at the bar on my own and he didn't even flinch. Kind of sad. 3 of our 4 meals also arrived wrong and he didn't even offer to make them correctly. Could be a great resturant but it seems they don't care.

My date and I ordered the Prime Rib special on Saturday evening. The prime rib was almost all fat and very little meat. The cup of Au Jus taste like it was made from a powder and the French onion soup taste like it came from powder too. We left more than half of our portions on our plates to be thrown away. Our waitress didn't ask how our food was or ask why we didn't eat our prime rib. She did ask if we wanted desert but I was not about to spend any more money here. It was a rip off.

Sat outside and it was very nice. Placed an order for drinks from the bartender. She served our drinks. Waited 20 minutes for our so called waiter. Waited another 30 minutes for our two sandwiches. First the atmosphere of this place is great. The outdoor seating at this establishment had a great views and tables were not on top of one another. The waitress Cameron (maybe with a K) was AWESOME. This was my first attempt to dine out during the pandemic and through a mask and gloves which she changed between serving others was so appreciated. She just couldn't have been anymore thoughtful and respectful of the current day times we are all going through. Unfortunately the Male bartender with an ungloved hand and bandaid on his index finger couldn't seem to help himself but to serve my cocktail to me with his hand on almost the complete rim of the glass he expected me to drink from. Yeah this place has a ways to go.

The cheese curds are some of the best I've had, and the food is always well presented. The service has been very slow the last few visits, not a full house either. A weekday during lunch hours, and a Sunday evening. The croutons were missing on the Heron's salads, and the servers seemed to forget to ask for your drink order. On a hot day like today, should get drinks out first thing. Make sure to check on the tables more that sit outside.

We ate here earlier this year on a trip to sight-see around Fort Atkinson. And it was a pleasant enough experience. The food was ample and tasted pretty good. And there was a pretty decent weekend evening crowd.

We stopped by again this past weekend. And it was like a different place.

On that Saturday evening, we were the only diners when we started, and all alone when we finished.

"Denise" seemed to try as our server. But every step of the process was like pulling teeth. And again, that was with us as the only customers.

Our food took forever to arrive, then it was all about puny portions, on smallish plates. And it tasted about as good as school cafeteria fare.

There don't seem to be many dining options out in this countryside to begin with. I guess next time we'll just bring our own food.

Food is always good but twice in the past 2 weeks we’ve waited over an hour for our food with the same excuse. They got a large group in with no reservation. Please get the orders out for 3 separate couples in a timely manner or we will have to find somewhere else to get 2 sandwiches. We brought guests with us last year and again over an hour wait to get food. That other couple will never come back. You have to look at a restaurant and take it's price/location/food into account before you decide the value of the experience.

Some days are not the best for service times, some days the food does not come out as fast as it could, but in no way, shape or form would I wish this place to close.

Food is QUALITY. It is obviously not a high end restaurant, but the quality of ingredients is pretty clearly shown. The owner quite obviously loves this place and puts the effort/money into it to succeed.

I have pretty much ordered everything on the menu in the last 3 years, you wont be disappointing by any of it. The atmosphere is great, especially when you can sit on the patio in the summer.

I love to come here on my "binge" day on Saturday to tare through some bar food. (BTW the Duck Poppers are absolutely the best)

Do yourself a favor, if you are looking at coming here, don't look for a second opinion. You wont be disappointed in the product

TLDR: It is not a high end restaurant, but damn the food is good for the price and the atmosphere is also quite welcoming. (P.S. Try the Duck Poppers)

Went in there tonight, had to wait. Yes its Friday night I get that. But we got seated and no one came to greet us. No one said I'll be right with you. Nothing. Helped all the tables around us, including people who got seated after us. The service was just horrible. We ended up leaving.

We made reservations by phone. When we arrived there was no trace of them. They did go ahead and set up a table for us on the patio, where it was 15 minutes before anyone even approached our table. We were never given water. At an outside table in Wisconsin in August. We had our drinks at about the half hour point and meal order was taken at this point. At an hour and a half absolutely no sign of our meals. Two hours after we got there , in total darkness, we received our meals. The food was delivered delicious, but after waiting two and a half hours it was difficult to enjoy it.

Seriously awful experience, but the waitress was nice.

Waited over 5 minutes to be seated, after multiple employees looked at us and didn't bother to grab the hostess. Turns out the hostess was one of the employees who looked at us a few times.

Waited 10 minutes for a waitress when we were seated. Ordered a mojito and a water.

Waited 20 minutes for the drink and water to come. Ordered cheese curds, an entree, and the special. I was informed they were out of the special, so I adjusted accordingly.

Waited about a half an hour for cheese curds, which tasted great, but there was a broken toothpick INSIDE one of the curds. The waitress told us we'd be comped the curds.

10 minutes later, was told that the other entree my SO ordered was also not available to order. This was an entire hour after we put in our order. She got a wrap or something.

Fast forward another hour (this was a 2.5 hour experience) and we were discussing how much money to leave on the table before leaving. During our conversation the food finally makes it to our table. My shrimp alfredo had 4 shrimp on it (which isn't uncommon but also lacking after waiting for so long). They forgot the fries that comes with the wrap on my SO's.

At this point (there were a few mixups I didn't mention for the sake of post length) we asked the waitress for the owner, so she wouldn't have to continue listening to our dissatisfaction. We wait 10 minutes, he comes out, turns around, and walks back inside. Turns out, it's one of the guys I noticed just drinking at the bar. Wait another 5 minutes, and he does in fact come out to greet us.

We explained to him our experience step by step and that by the time we parked to the time we got our food was over 2.5 hours. He explained how swamped they were (there was two other couples who had been done eating for some time, and a table of 6 inside. The rest of the restaurant was completely empty. Not a valid excuse). He went on about how his son and son's wife had to come in because they were understaffed and how darn busy they were. They were so busy they ran out of a lot of the menu options. Well if they were so busy why was the owner sitting and drinking at the bar with his buddy the entire time we were there?

He then rudely insinuated that we were only complaining to get a free meal. "Fine eat your food for free!" Then walked away mid conversation. We got up and gave the waitress some money for her time and effort and left the restaurant.

A lot of restaurants get busy. It's a good problem to have. 1) they weren't busy at all, 2) if they were, it's a good problem. Figure out how to deal with it or lose business.

One word.....Amazing! Not only is the decor and building special but the food is spectacular! I had the French onion soup which was delicious, and a BLT with sweet potato fries, also very good. Buddy had the smothered chicken and side salad, that was very good as well the location is superb, right on the river with excellent views. You start off walking in a very antique looking place. Right off the river by the damn, awesome view. The person working was very friendly, and great service. The food, Amazing. I had there spicy garlic wings, 10 for 6 bucks. Nice to have a place that is close that has great wings. Wife had steak sandwich, she loved it. Son and granddaughter both were stuffed when we left. I will tell everyone I know to come and check you out. IF YOU LOVE WINGS, MUST TRY!

We stopped by to have lunch and were very impressed. Jonah was very friendly and efficent and the food is second to none. We felt like we were home while speaking to the owner Ed (his wife was working hard as well in the kitchen) and then to top off the nice expericence, a gentleman came out of the kitchen who grew up in Prairie du Chien so we got to visit with Dan! We can't wait to go back!!!

Based on the negative reviews I was aprehensive.
Our Friday fish fry experience was excellent. Our server, Julie was spot on in all respects. The Old Fashion's were perfect which set the tone for the entire evening. The food was very good with ample portions. A broccoli option on the fish fry was a welcome alternative. Very nicely done.
Looking to return soon.

Went there yesterday Oct 21st 2017. When we first got there the dinning room was pretty busy so we went to the little side place on the outside that was part of the bar that was serving food, there was six people in line and we could get something quick. A half hour later!!! We got our turn to order and they were out of what we wanted. So we went inside, and the dinning room had cleared out a lot. We picked a table by the bar and I went and ordered a couple of drinks I didn't see anybody taking orders, and asked the bartender is there someone taking orders or can I order from him, he said I could order from him and I did. An hour later during which time a table of 6, table of 5 and table of 4 came in after us, they all got their food!! I got that bartender back and asked what happened to our food and he said they were really rushed that day and he would check, 10 min later he came back and told us it would be out in about 10 minutes. I wasn't real happy about it but we waited that long and were hungry and so we'll wait another 10 min. Then another couple came in an sat in the dining room a waitress took their order. We waited another 20 min, still no food, and then the couple that just came in got their order. What the heck! Got the bartender again and asks why we didn't get our food and all those people came in after us got theirs, he went into the kitchen and asked what happened to our food, he came back saying they could not give us a definite time. Are you kidding!!! We did not order anything special, a BLT, Chicken sandwich and a burger. We left. I don't know what their problem is but I can tell you I will never go back there again . It actually look like good food. To bad we didn't get any.

it was posted hour wait I took that to mean before getting a table, no that meant an hour after you got your salad before you got your entrée. All the people around us that sat down after us ate before we did. We ordered prime rib and a fillet, the only thing that had to actually be cooked was the medrare fillet. That would only take 8 mins. When I finally got our food ,after we said we were leaving, my 12oz prime rib that I paid $19 for was an 8oz . So I was charged almost $2 an oz. I will never tell any one to go there.

The food is delicious and the location right on the river makes for beautiful scenery. It's unfortunate that both times we have gone the service really sucked. The first time, it took more than a half an hour to just get our drinks, including water for the table. It was even longer to get our food. The second visit, we were seated and after 15 minutes we decided to leave. We sat at our table not even greeted by the waiting staff. Each waitress walked passed our table at least two times.

On our way out, I thought I'd let the hostess know why we were leaving and to explain we will never be back, when a man from the kitchen came out to listen to my story. Took my information and said he wanted to make it right. He was going to send us coupons to come back in and have dinner and drinks on them. Three weeks later and nothing. (Note, I didn't expect anything when telling the hostess the story and still don't)

Management needs to step it up, get organized and hire/train their staff.

Really good food, bul horrible service. Our Waitress forgot about us several times and it took too long to get our food after ordering. Also it took way to long for the bartender to serve us our drinks while waiting for our table. Management needs to gain better control of staff and deligate more to prevent chaos. Our family of 7 had a great time at Heron's Landing and on Saturday night in spite of the fact that they were extremely busy! We had to wait for a bit as we requested a seat on the patio and that seating was in high demand with the great weather. We we seated by the very pleasant hostess and Keegan brought us water and and made sure we had place settings right away. Molly was our server and did a fabulous job, again in spite of how busy they were both inside and out. The food was really good. We had appetizers of duck poppers, mozzarella sticks in wontons and fried mushrooms all very tasty! I had a mojito, made with their home grown fresh mint, which is a favorite of mine. For dinner I had the pan fried wallyeye and it was awesome! Others had the fried cod, hamburger, and shrimp. Everyone was very pleased with their choice. We were all too full to try dessert. To top the evening off a beautiful blue heron paid us a visit and we had the opportunity to get a photo. We will definitely return again and again. Thanks Molly and Keegan for your hard work and the entire staff and owner for you attention to detail.
