For anyone traveling the Great River Road or anywhere in Western Wisconsin, the Monarch Public House is an absolute must destination stop! This is a true hidden gem located in Fountain City that I wish I had known about much earlier in my life. This is Wisconsin’s oldest continuous serving restaurant, serving since 1894. I’m an old guy who eats out a lot and I would rank the Monarch Public House as one of my all time top ten dining experiences anywhere in the USA! Absolutely gorgeous interior authentic to a real Irish Pub. A variety of cozy dining nooks including service in a large library room, as well as traditional seating areas and an outdoor deck option with beautiful vistas of the Mississippi river and bluffs. Outstanding Irish fare, pizza, burgers, sandwiches and more…food, service and drinks were all amazing and the prices were exceptionally reasonable. Everyone in our party had nothing but high praise for every aspect of this dining event! This is a place I will go out of my way for again and again!

Moved away 4 years ago and chose to take a friend here on a visit. Never disappoints! Greeted by the owner and welcomed. Had to wander and look at things before sitting down. Packed full of amazing treasures to gaze at. Superb Rubens. This place should be packed with wait lines, but it isn't. Go enjoy it!

Recently stopped in on a Wednesday when they feature the garden level Schmitty’s Tap room bar which offers a throw back to many-many-years-ago with even more interesting history, wall decor and pics. That alone is worth a visit but then the operator/bartender told me about the corned-beef taco. I had to try it and I will say it is one of the best taco combinations I have ever had!! Phenomenal!! I have traveled the globe always trying local foods and I have never come across a corned-beef taco. Go here to discover local rivertown history and be amazed with the food!! You won’t be disappointed.

If you are looking for a bar that has a “like family environment” this is the one for you! It’s very welcoming for young kids as there are dragons and stories. Along with fun drinks that you can’t get at your typical bar. The walls are filled with many cool art pieces of history and perfect place to try some Irish plates!

Had an amazing Irish taco - shared an order of 2 because they were plenty big! Fresh pico & green salsa were perfect on the shredded corned beef & flour tortillas. Our 37th wedding anniversary & were treated like royalty, including glasses of champagne. Quirky, unique, the perfect place to begin year 38 together. 🥰

They truly care and have such a wide variety of food and drink specials. It’s clear they know what they’re doing as it was amazing! Such a great gem in this area, thank you so much. What a treasure!
We didn't eat or drink, but came to explore. This is a place full (literally floor to ceiling) of unique pieces of history. The bartender even put on his Irish accent to give us some fun insights. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was too busy listening to the storytelling.
Definitely worth checking out!
Also, an incredible bonus - they have several gluten free options for those who need to avoid wheat, barley and other gluten grains.
Amazing!

Took a day trip down the Mississippi and stopped at this wonderful place for a bite to eat. Very unique old building with something to see everywhere you look. Owners Lori and John have put a lot of Love and work into this building and it shows!
Food was excellent and thank goodness for Joe who explained all the brew choices. It was a great experience and I have already recommended the Monarch to many friends and relatives. I look forward to returning many times. The artwork on the walls was also quite unique and displayed well.

After having a bad experience at another local restaurant, I was motivated to review Monarch Public House. We stopped in last fall before a production by the Fountain City Players, and were pleasantly surprised. The building is a beautiful big historic space, and decorated delightfully. Both the staff and other patrons were friendly and kind - one man who struck up a conversation with me ended up sitting near us at the play! The food is comfort-oriented and Irish-inspired, and I remember it being quite tasty. We will return!

Very unique design. You can't stop moving your head, there is a lot of unique furnishings, pictures, and statues. The atmosphere was different than most. Service was slow, short on staff. But when we were served very friendly. We had a pizza at an Irish pub, I'm not sure if that was the best choice, but they did have a pizza menu, not one off. The pizza was OK. Very saucy, not many topping for being "the works." I would go back and try a different menu item.

Fast service and the hospitality was okay.. slightly over the top. I placed an order to go for several things as I had high hopes for this place.
Kids Mac & cheese (About the size of my palm, box Mac & cheese)
Irish stew (Tastes like pure salt)
All cheese 16 inch pizza (Nothing special here.. probably the best out of the list)
Dingle bay dip (A bowl full of grease/butter covered in cheese)
The dubliner (Server claimed this was a great choice! Although I was disappointed very quickly.. extremely dry, chewy and no flavor what so ever.)
Pot O gold (This was by far the worst.. I’ve never had a appetizer platter so soggy in my life.. as if they dumped a gallon of water over top)
After all I paid $89.00 for this.. I would give this restaurant a chance to redeem themselves before writing this but after reviewing other 1 star reviews I can easily judge this owner does not accept honest reviews and seems quite sensitive to say the least. Steer clear..

5 stars is not enough. Seriously one of the best places I've ever eaten.
My husband and I got quite a lot of food because everything sounded delicious! We shared the Irish potato soup and Dingle Bay Dip. Both were so good we almost licked the dishes clean. I had the Shannon plate which was amazing and my husband had the Steak and Bacon pie which he said was fantastic.
Even the drinks were awesome! The bloody Mary was perfect (I'm very picky with my Bloody Marys). A little kick without being too spicy. My husband had the Great Golden Lager. I'm not a beer person at all, my husband usually gets my chaser for my Bloody's, but wow was it good! I almost got a glass myself it was so good.
The staff were just absolutely phenomenal. It was a quiet night and we were the only ones in there so the staff would come over and make conversation with us. They are easy to talk to and very down to earth. As soon as you walk in you can feel the love and passion they've put into everything about this place. It almost feels like going to someone's place to have a great home-cooked meal and connect with the people around you.
They even had trivia cards at the table which we loved because we talked and laughed with each other instead of being on our phones.
Back to the food though because I can't explain how delicious it is. The Irish Potato soup. Best. Thing. Ever. I almost went back to ask if they would fill a thermos with soup. I'm so sad I don't live closer because I would survive on food from here for the rest of my life.

Visited The Monarch for the first time today. (Will not be my last) The atmosphere is very old school tavern. John (Jack) the owner is a super guy, friendly, attentive and personable. The wine list though not exceptional is way above any place in the area. The whiskey selection is very good. I had Red Breast 12y. Come on, it's a good Irish bar! This brings me to the food... The bangers and mash were the best I have had in my life and I'm an old guy. If you are in the area don't miss this wonderful pub.
After many visits this is still the best Irish pub around. The Fountain Brew beer is great. John Robert Porter is my favorite.

Most of the food is sub par, especially for the price. But the restaurant is neat. If you don't want to be disappointed, come for the neat environment, not expecting the food quality to be great. Unless it's pizza.
Clucker needs more chicken.
Soda lines need cleaning.
Burger patty was dry.
Mac and cheese for kids should be homemade, not Kraft, but that is a personal preference I suppose.

Very cool pub and grill! We loved this place.. a bit of a museum, good selection of beer and good food and service.
Also a very neat little town with some great motorcycle riding in the area!

We just stopped in for a beer we were on a road trip & had another destination ahead of us. But bartender was very pleasant. The inside is amazing, transported out of Ireland. The food did look really tasty

We had a great experience. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food and drinks were delicious. This place is also kid friendly. Our son thoroughly enjoyed his Mac n Cheese. He learned about the dragons and was given his very own dragon to take home. We highly recommend giving this place a try.

Oldest running tavern in Wisconsin. Young lady bartending was friendly and made the best Irish old fashion I ever had!

45 minutes to get food, 2 parties that came in after us got their food before us and we just ordered the "special of the day" food was undercooked, wasn't waiting any longer! Wow!! Nice response

Popped in on a whim during our date day drive, and we’ll definitely be back!
Very cool building with wonderful service and delicious food! We had the Dingle Bay Dip and The Monarch Roast Beef sandwich for lunch paired with the Prairie Moon Red and Eagle Valley Harvest Gold. I do believe I’ll be getting that dip every time we come back, as it was the highlight of my meal.
Understanding supply chain shortages, we were sad to miss out on the corned beef, but that doesn’t change my review at all. I’m very excited to come back!
Sorry for no food pictures. We were very hungry and dug right in!

The owner is rude. Don't go in there if you don't know anything about Irish food or drinks. He is very insulting. Have never been to Ireland.
