Description

Inspired by the traditions of Wisconsin taverns and supper clubs, The Old Fashioned exists to pay tribute to the foods and spirits that make our state famous.

Here, that means so much more than beers, brats, and cheese. Don't worry, we take all those things very seriously, but we're equally committed to preserving the unique heritage that defines our way of life. When you walk through our doors, you'll not only experience what Wisconsin was, you’ll taste what it always will be.

The atmosphere here was great and the staff were all very friendly and attentive. We tried the cheese curds, those weren’t my favorite. However, the root beer on tap was incredible! For the entree I had the Mac and Cheese but I asked to add chicken to it so I had some protein too. They were happy to do so and it was more than enough for me! I will go back the next time I’m through the area!

Really cool place to hold a venue upstairs... Definitely had great feedback regarding the food.. Our server had no problems setting up the room to our needs.
However, was not attentive to our group. And we had to seek her out several times.. She was not very community or grateful at the end of the evening.
It would have been a much better experience if we had a different server... it wasn't "horrible" because of her.... Just could have been a better experience!!
It was a great building, a great space and we would come back again

We went to the old fashion for the first time ever meet and my wife and we sat down and it was a nice atmosphere and took him a while to get to us to bring us a drink but that was OK and then when we finally got the fish we wanted a choice of potatoes and all they offer is French fries which we can't stand I wanted fried American fries or mashed potatoes are fully loaded baked potatoes they don't offer that anyway the fish I got the deep fried Cod and it was very oily it was worse than culvers and I guess that's just the way it is there from talking to people so if you like fish don't get it there I think they caught it out in the lake Monona or something and let it sit in Greece.. And my wife had the walleye and it was a small small portion and the flavor was terrible I would not be 1 bit surprised if it was lab grown My recommendation don't eat the fish at the old-fashioned I don't know about the other food but the fish is definitely a no no...

The food is usually really amazing. The portion size compared to other photos in reviews was really small for cheese curds. The corner table we sat at head over 20 flies surrounding us and when it was mentioned as we tried to rush out as quickly as possible due to there being so many flies. I didn’t take pictures I was pretty disgusted. It seems like a health hazard. I have loved this place for years but I really wouldn’t go back after this and being dismissed by our server about the flies all over and the new table next to us also having issues. It’s disappointing as this has been my favorite restaurant for many years and sad to say I won’t come back.

The food was good, it was just really bad service. Our server was rude and uninterested the whole time. And then we found it hilarious that we were being kicked out before 9pm. It was 8:47 and the bidder was literally standing 20 feet away with a spay bottle and rag in hand waiting for us to leave. Can’t even stay busy past 8:30pm so I guess that tells you what you need to know.

Food was pretty good! Had some friends and family visiting from out of state and the menu definitely helped give them a taste of Wisconsin! We were crammed around a small table and then it became uncomfortably hot in there, but other than that it was a good time.

I was in Madison for a conference and a hotel staff member recommended Old Fashioned. It was a short walk to the restaurant, so I decided to try the restaurant.

I was seated right away by a nice young man. The waiter came to my table quickly and was nice and described the specials for the evening. I decided to try the duck special based on his recommendation.

Whe my food arrived it looked delicious, but it was not hot. It was barely lukewarm. The flavor was good, but the food temperature was not good at all. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he said, “That’s how it’s supposed to be.” Hmmmm! Anyway it was a disappointing experience and meal.

Must stop here for their old fashioned. We also tried their cheese curds and lunch specials. Delicious seasonal sandwiches offered in the summer - smothered sandwiches and fresh heirloom tomato BLT’s! This is also the spot to go for their namesake old fashioned if you drink alcohol.

My favorite items was their cheese curds though. It was crispy and not too oily!

We were passing through Madison and looked up Wisconsins best cheese curds and this restaurant came up. It definitely has to be one of the best. The cheese curds were so good. We also got the cheese fondue and the poutine. I dipped my cheese curds in the cheese and it was fabulous. By the end I had a cheese overload lol. The poutine was my least favorite in that I wasn’t really fond of the sausage gravy. It made it a bit weird but it was still more than edible. I also had a burger which was really good. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was nostalgic in a nice little spot downtown. On our way back I wanted to stop again but we chose to try another spots cheese curds and they didn’t even compare. Great job and awesome cheese curds.

This restaurant is a must in Madison. Located right across the street from the State Capitol in downtown Madison. The service is hospitable from the time you enter the door til you leave. The service is a well run engine smooth and consistent. The servers are quick and great with following up with their patrons. The food is hands down great. If you like salty and savory, the Pountine are fries, cheese curds topped with sausage gravy. Those cheese curds are yummy! We also tried the Schnitzel, Reuben,, Fish and Chips, and the Salmon Salad all of the dishes can hold their own in terms of flavor. The Schnitzel is a hefty portion and you will definitely have left overs. Overall, a great dining experience.

Cute old-style decoration inside, and great view on the Capitol outside. Great vibes. Was expecting a dark crowded place, but it felt spacious with plenty of natural light. Now, we were happy to taste Wisconsin specialties, but not brave enough not finish anything. Nothing to blame on the preparations, was better than what we ate at other places, but so greasy, so heavy. You need lots of alcohol to burn all this hard stuff. And a 1w of veggie diet to rebalance your stomach. And I'm still looking for real 🧀

Friday fish fry is delightful. Never enough tartar sauce but the fish is well fried and comes with fries, cole slaw, and bread. Cheese curds are perfection! Lightly battered and melty with a good cheese pull, freshly fried. It gets a wee bit loud in there, sometimes feels like everyone is screaming and it’s hard to hear. But overall an excellent meal!

We were only in Madison for a half of a day and we were told to have lunch/dinner here. I had one is their famous old fashions and it was delicious. It was unlike any I've had but light refreshing and wonderful orange and cherry flavor. I did it less sweet which meant soda water instead of 7 up. I can't imagine it any sweet but I don't like sweet stuff. My hubby had a Spotted Cow by New Glarus brewing. He said it was a light, refreshing yummy ale.

We shared the cheese curds and I know they are voted top in the area but we thought they were just ok. They are very tiny and so more batter than we would like. And they were fairly greasy. We had them at Lakefront Brewing in Milwaukee and theirs are ten times better. They are much larger and a lighter beer batter.

My hubby had a bowl of beer cheese soup and he loved it. I had the salad with cherries, almonds and blue cheese & it was so delicious. I added grilled chicken and beets. I got the sherry vinaigrette on the side and it was the most delicious fresh dressing ever.

We had a great server and quick service. I would definitely recommend especially if you like local Wisconsin beers. They have 52 on tap and I think over 100 bottles/cans. Amazing selection and I love that they highlight local.

The Old Fashioned is always a solid choice if you’re craving classic Wisconsin comfort food and a great local atmosphere. The weekends can be very busy, so expect a bit of a wait, especially during dinner hours—but it’s worth it. Our server was attentive and friendly, making sure drinks stayed full and checking in at just the right moments without feeling intrusive. The food came out hot and fresh, and the portions were generous. The menu has plenty of local favorites, and the overall vibe is warm and lively, especially if you enjoy the energy of a bustling dining room.

Visited this restaurant in pursuit of the city's best cheese curds after seeing many recommendations on reddit/internet. They did not disappoint! We ordered the fried cheese curds, beer cheese soup, and poutine (which, surprisingly, also had cheese curds in them). Everything was delicious, but we WAY over-ordered and had to fight to finish as much as possible. Portions are enormous, which was very welcome. I'd recommend getting the poutine instead of the plain cheese curds, as that many tends to get somewhat heavy after a while. The beer cheese soup was splendid as well.

We visited here during the farmers market so understood it was goin to be busy but the waitress we had was very inattentive to our table.
The food was flavorless except the cheese curds. We are cheese curd snobs, and these were amazing. Id say they were very, very good but not the best.
I got a burger-it was gross. It was supposed to have mayo on it and it didn't so I asked for some and got charged for it.
My kid got the pulled pork and it didn't taste like pork at all. Not sure what kid of meat it was.
The dr pepper was flat
The sugar bun was ok but hard as a rock
The waffle was ok but asked for stuff on the side and it came plain.
2 kids that ordered Tenders were charged for sauce that should have come with it.
Will probably not come back except to order curds

Our driver to the hotel was a local that recommended this place. Short walk to where we stayed, had everything on our list to want to try in Wisconsin, so we made the visit to The Old Fashion. Atmosphere was pub-like and host were friendly. We were sat upstairs where it was definitely a lot cooler in temp. Ordered cheese curds and poutine right away. We also tried out the classic old fashion was sweet and tasty. Altogether we ordered Mac and cheese, fried walleye and patty melt for our mains. Everything was okay. The cheese curds were salty and seemed like they may have been sitting so they didn’t have that cheesy effect I was expecting. I had the walleye (as pictured) not as good as I thought it would be. Bland in taste but my favorite of everything I ate were the fries. Considering the number of reviews and the fact that they’re well known for their cheese curds, I was rather disappointed in the visit. Had great company and glad I got to at least give this place a try.

Cheese curds, yes. BBQ sampler, no thanks. 🧀🥩🍸
We stumbled across The Old Fashioned while spending the night in Madison and figured we’d give it a try. The place has a great vibe, and the cheese curds? Absolute perfection—crispy, gooey, everything you dream Wisconsin curds should be.

Then came the BBQ sampler plate… and that dream took a nosedive. The meat was so salty and overloaded with pepper that we couldn’t even finish it. Total letdown.

Cocktails were just okay—not bad, but definitely not memorable.

If you’re here, grab a beer, order the cheese curds, and maybe skip the BBQ unless you’re craving disappointment with a side of spice.

Food - This place brags about the cheese curds, so we needed to first try them out. Did not disappoint. The batter had an almost slightly sweet flavor paired with the paprika dipping sauce, which was fantastic. Next, we ordered 2 old fashions. One was the cherry old fashioned with bourbon, and the second was a regular old fashioned with brandy. Perfectly done and very tasty. For the main, we had the chicken and biscuits, which was basically an inside-out pot pie. Biscuits were soft and buttery, and the chicken and vegetables were excellent. We also had the Ruben. It was piled high and one of the best I have had in some time. Meat was cooked perfectly, and the extra 1000 island sauce for dipping was nice.

Service - We didn't have reservations, so we sat at the bar. The bartender was very kind and was easily managing the crowd at the bar. There are 2 parts of the restaurant for seating, but it would be highly suggested to make a reservation no matter what.

Restaurant - Everything we saw was clean and maintained. Floors were taken care of, and the bar was not sticky. It is pretty cramped inside, mainly due to the popularity and wanting to get as many tables inside and available. Lots of old signs and pictures adorn the walls.

Overall - Great food, great drinks. Would visit again with some friends or family, we did see a few other dishes being brought out to other tables that looked amazing. Make reservations, we went an hour before closing, and it was still packed.

Visitors beware… probably worst old fashioned I’ve ever had. Premixed old fashioned at hotel was better. Might want to consider a name change. Ordered cheese curds as an appetizer and was never asked if I wanted more food. Do better.

I give top marks for the food. We did wait a fair amount to get served, but a Phillip Seymore Hoffman type made sure we were well watched. The loud noise and crying babies were treats left for someone else. The Old Fashion burger was great. Also, along with the Old Fashion Burger, which was delicious
Was a plain salad that went quickly as it was so tasty. Old Fashion drinks were a little disappointing. The 2nd visit the drink was poor. I am extremely disappointed since that's their name. I had to take a star off their food review 😩 for this, but all the food was great.

We love the Old Fashioned! Their cheese curds are absolutely amazing. I like to pair them with a salad to balance them out. My husband loves their WI Old Fashions. Service is always fast and friendly.
