Stayed in a flat - #11 - right next to the road on the second floor and it was noisy!!! The windows are large and mid century and probably haven’t been changed since designed. It sounds like you’re right outside- the cars, trucks and motorcycles run right next to our heads. It was nice that we could have our dog with us. The stairs also BADLY NEED REPAIR. The metal treads and front borders are rusted and pulling away ft the cement. My shoes caught in them every time I went down. Didn’t fall but damn close.

Such an adorable place. Small staff so service was spotty. Unfortunately a previous review called out a mildew smell in the motel part of the property. It’s true and the carpet is damp despite weather being really dry for the last month. Maybe they need a new roof or got soaked in a downpour, but it is not pleasant. I hate to write this but honesty is the best policy.

The Oxbow is not as great as it once was. The room smelled musty and not well ventilated. A lot of noise by house keeping in the mornings. The mattress was feeling worn and sunken in the middle.

The staff want to do their best to help but the end product isn’t comfortable or fun

We recently hosted our son and his fiancée’s wedding rehearsal dinner at The Lakely at the Oxbow Hotel and the entire experience, including our two night stay at the hotel, was absolutely fabulous from start to finish. The atmosphere was perfect, the food was outstanding, and the service was top-notch—our guests are still raving about it! A special thank you to Sarah and Jeremy, who were truly wonderful and so helpful throughout the planning process. They went above and beyond to make sure every detail was taken care of, and their professionalism and warmth made the evening stress-free and incredibly special. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate such an important occasion for our family. If you’re looking for a venue that combines amazing food, a beautiful setting, and staff who genuinely care, you'll love The Lakely and the Oxbow. - Tricia W

We loved our stay at this unique hotel. It brought back memories of my family bar when incase younger because of the smell of it...which made me feel right at home. Staff was great and the record rental was the cherry on top. Definitely one of the top spots in Eau Claire!

This hotel exceeded my expectations - it’s in a central spot in the city, has an attached bar/lounge that had live music, and the rooms were large and bed comfy.

Would definitely stay here again.

Great atmosphere, people were friendly at check in. cool unique spot in a good location. This is the 2nd time I have stayed in one of their pull up rooms and it will be my last. although it was clean, it was the worse mildew smell ever. If it wasn't already past 7pm I would have asked for a refund or new room or went somewhere else but since I had to leave right away at 6am I just went to bed. the smell was gross.

The dinner we had at the hotel bar and restaurant was amazing. So good. The skate cheeks were crispy and delicious. Sarah, the hotel manager, was the nicest and most amazing animal loving person who welcomed my parrot Ollie into the hotel even though I messed up on the reservation and booked the wrong room category. She was so nice at check in and thankfully Ollie behaved for once in his life. We want to make this town a regular stop when we travel to the cabin every year. The hotel is very nice and quirky and cool.

I travel for work and my job would have me stay in hotels for 2 wks at time. And most hotels if they consider themselves “hotels” would provide cleaning every 2 or 3 days. Especially if your stay is more than 7 days. I had to ask them to clean my room and when asked they told me they normally don’t do that until you check out. You would think if they see you are there for 11 nights that they would accommodate that service every 3 days . just like other hotels. They cleaned my room once my whole stay there. So kinda of disappointed with the service but loved the hotel environment and ambiance. Retro and cool. Unfortunately management wasn’t very accommodating.

The Oxbow Hotel is a very convenient place to stay with plenty of safe parking and within walking distance of downtown and the rivers. The bed was very comfortable and it was very quiet at night despite my room being on the road. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food at the Lakely looked amazing. Drinks are good too. A very enjoyable stay!

This is a super unique, fun boutique hotel. We called before booking online and they were happy to match the online price I had found. We had car trouble on the way and called to make sure we would still be able to check in after midnight and they were super accommodating and asked if we were ok after dealing with a flat tire. ||Upon checking in, the hostess showed explained how each room has a eecord player and we were able to pick out a record to bring up to the room. So fun! The room was really nice, kind of loft/apartment- like but had trendy upgrades. The bed was actually more comfortable than most hiltons that we normally stay at!!||We wish we could've gotten in earlier in the night so we could enjoy the outdoor sitting area woth love music and handmade cocktails. Definitely recommend this hotel!!

This was our second stay at the Oxbow. We are from Columbus, Ohio and were visiting Minnesota and Wisconsin. We came through on our way home. Stayed there once before and like the uniqueness of the hotel and the area. Therefore we decided to stop again. It did not disappoint. Very nice room, clean and nicely decorated. Liked the furniture. Edited 7/10/25 to reflect I may have been a bit harsh. Still, my evening took a two hour detour I hadn’t planned on. I feel 2.5 stars are more accurate.

I’ve stayed here a couple times. First time was meh. It was during winter and the bar wasn’t open. This time though, I booked through hotels.com and picked the Oxbow because it said there were laundry facilities. However, there are not laundry facilities. I was told I could (maybe) use their sister hotel a few blocks away. But they weren’t sure if they had laundry. I’d have to check. I didn’t touch a thing in the room but they wouldn’t let me find more suitable accommodations. 24 hours cancellation policy. How would I know you were lacking what I need before checking in? Hotels.com says the Oxbow submitted the amenity information. The Oxbow says that Hotels.com made it up.

Oh, and the rooms I had smelled bad. Musty smelling. Never again. Spend a few more bucks and stay at the Lismore.

Wow! Every little detail was absolute eye candy from the furniture and decor of the lobby, the various local art work on all the walls to everything in our hotel room. The bed was very comfy and the pillows were perfect. The aroma inside the room reminded us of a spa. We enjoyed playing records (jazz especially). A multitude of games were offered. Rooms are cozy and come with the usual amenities plus a vinyl record player, and albums in the lobby you can check out.

Came here with my husband to visit my hometown so I know the area very well. Best location to stay and explore and with all the new changes to downtown. However, even though location is good I will never stay again. I wouldn’t call it a hotel but more motel. It was on the better side though (cute) I would say. Definitely the hotel cost way more than is should. There’s an additional $20 that they say is for wifi/renting bikes/24 hr lobby/yoga mats/indoor and outdoor games/live music/gym/parking/discounts at certain stores of downtown in which they don’t even know of or which ones they are. However, I didn’t use any of that so I pretty much used up $20 ok nothing. If it was part of the hotel price itself then ok I understand but a separate charge for these amenities is ridiculous. When you look at the hotel photos you’ll also find that there aren’t photos of the bathrooms and kind of understandable. Bathroom wasn’t too bad but also not in the best condition (definitely could use remodeling).

You probably won’t get a good night sleep at this hotel because of the noise. There is a band playing in the lounge/restaurant and it’s very loud in our room (#25), even with the TV playing loud. The walls are not sound insulated and we can clearly hear the TV and people talking in the room next to us. We thought it was unusual for the hotel to provide ear plugs in the room. Now we know why. Seriously! People come to a hotel to sleep. 😡 I’ve never been in a louder hotel in my life. This is ridiculous!

There isn’t any breakfast. There isn’t a coffee maker in the room, however they do offer coffee at the front desk.

I do NOT recommend this hotel because if the high noise level.

Cute boutique hotel but would recommend staying in the main house. We are in town for a wedding and stayed in the rooms that open up directly to the outside. I heard traffic all night and our neighbors loudly stumbling in drunk at 2:30am. The rooms smell very mildewy and almost like wet dog. My parents and Grandma stayed in the main house and the rooms are much nicer and don’t stink.

The Lakely is super nice, great drinks right on site. The property itself is within walking distance to everything downtown, which is very convenient and nice. If we stayed here again we’d book rooms in the main house, otherwise we’d go somewhere else. Wish I would have read the reviews more closely before booking because it seems to be a common theme!

Stayed at the Oxbow for a wedding this weekend and was thoroughly disappointed, especially after how excited I was from seeing pictures.

The lobby and bedroom decor is cute, but that wasn’t enough to cover up the mildew-y smell of the water-damaged carpets and cigarette-smoke in the hallways. Made me sick to my stomach.

We had also called ahead to make sure there was a cot in our room for a third person (which they promised would be set up when we got there). Upon arrival, we were told that it was not possible to put a cot in our room and we had to pay for a second stinky room. When we got back late at night, our bed had been made with damp bedding.

While staff were helpful, we had SO many issues with booking rooms and payment. The $200/night price tag was not nearly worth the convenience. Sadly, I cannot recommend this hotel to others.

Very disappointing. Really stinky hallways and filthy carpet throughout. This place needs an overhaul desperately. The record player in the room is a neat idea and the library selection was good but everything we checked out was so warped we couldn't listen to them. Fire alarm sounded at 5:30am. My husband and I stayed at the Oxbo recently for our yearly family trip to the super-motocross races in Millville. And we were pretty disappointed with our room and even when it came to asking for front desk for things.. he seemed like he really didn’t want to be there and not really friendly. When we arrived to our room we noticed the fridge wasn’t working so my husband had to YouTube to trouble shoot to get that working. We then noticed in the bathroom shower there was black stuff all over the shower like mold or something which was gross. The garbage cans didn’t have bags in them for us to throw garbage in them so we had to use our bag we got from the local Hy-Vee. And lets not forget to mention the smell in the room not refreshing at all stale moldy air and unfortunately the windows don’t open so the rooms can’t air out. Plus it’s down town not quiet at all with all the cars driving by. If looking for a quiet stay I wouldn’t recommend staying here. Overall experience was terrible they also charged us an extra 208 dollars which we are looking into because that is not what our online booking said it would cost us.

This was an interesting stay; i loved the little details like the outdoor hammock and I definitely enjoyed being able to access live music and a meal at the attached restaurant; and what a fun idea to have the option to select records to play in your room :). I think it might have been where my room was located (the first door, bottom level, underneath the stairs), but as cute as the place was, and as much as I wanted to appreciate it, I was uneasy the whole time due to the mildewy smell and run down shower space. Couldn't get comfortable because I was worried so much about what was causing the smell...wore my shoes the entire time. Wanted to love this place, enjoyed the little details, but couldn't wait to check out.

Nice place, but missing some things that would make it great.

Parking was difficult to figure out. There was one small lot immeidately after a turn that was hard to notice, and I had to call the hotel to find out they have parking across the street. Room was comfortable and I slept really well. but as others stated the walls are thin and the road noise can be a problem.

The restaurant was closed, and I didn't see any breakfast offered in the morning. Coffee was good, but would have liked more coffee options. Record choices were also pretty obscure, but record players were a unique addition to the hotel. Hopefully more choices are added. Room had some unique furniture like lamps and art work and clocks, and those were nice.

Overall, rooms were clean, staff were friendly, location was good, and I had a comfortable stay. Loved the big pillows. I would come here again.

My wife and I decided to have a weekend getaway to Eau Claire and chose to stay here at the Oxbow based off of the photos and description. I have stayed in many motels working across the midwest, and as soon as I arrived I realized this is an old "crack shack" motel that has been renovated. My suspicions were confirmed as soon as we walked into the room - the odor inside the room was nasty, and I woke up several times throughout the night due to the smells. The walls are not sound proofed, so you can hear vehicles going by while laying on the bed. Overall the aesthetics / theme were cool, location seems great, but the underlying issues listed above impacted our comfort too much to lookover. This is a $75 per night motel, and we checked out halfway through our trip to go home.

The Oxbow Hotel, located right in the heart of downtown Eau Claire, Wisconsin, offers a charming blend of modern comfort and rustic aesthetics. The rooms are tastefully decorated with a nod to the local heritage, adorned with beautiful artwork. Another cool feature is the in room record players with a great selection of albums you can check out from the front desk. The rooms were well maintained, very clean, and the hotel is extremely quiet, which made for a great nights sleep. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. Huge Thanks to Anna and all the other staff who made our stay so memorable! Parking is safe and easy, and there is plenty of room for your vehicle.

One standout feature is The Lakely, the hotel's on-site restaurant and bar. The Lakely impresses with pub style menu that showcases local ingredients and flavors. The bar has an amazing list of local beers and craft cocktails. The culinary experience is elevated by live music performances, creating a vibrant and enjoyable ambiance. It has a wonderful stage and sounds system.

Overall, The Oxbow Hotel, coupled with The Lakely, provides a delightful stay for those seeking a unique and culturally rich experience in Eau Claire.

Reserved this room for a fun weekend with my husband. This used to be a sleazy motel in the 90s and I was excited to see it revitalized! I had high hopes but I was left underwhelmed.

I will start with the good. The room was clean, no odors, bed and pillows are comfy. The record player is a nice touch but we didn’t use it, the selection of records didn’t interest me. The staff were nice albeit slightly aloof. The Lakely is a nice place for a drink and some live music. The location is great.

Now the not good. This place is expensive for what you get. It is very loud!! Cars that drive by are not muffled by the windows. The heater/ AC is also loud. The walls are thin. The air in the elevator is heavy with air freshener. I wondered what they were trying to cover up. The coffee served in the morning is awful.

Will not be back.

The bathroom in my room didn't have a real door. I was staying here alone, so it wasn't that big of a deal, but I honestly would probably have just left if I were with someone else. The door was one of those rolling barn door types (i.e. not a pocket door) that has a big gap between the door and wall, as well as the floor. It offered slightly more privacy than if they had just put a public toilet stall at the foot of the bed. I mean, I'll use a public toilet if I have to, but "public toilet vibes" isn't what I'm looking for in a hotel room.

I really hate having to leave a semi-negative review, because the staff were very nice, and my overall experience was fine, but I would have been pretty upset if I had paid to come here with somebody else.

Staying with a dog?? Read this
I would not stay here again. We called and made a reservation via phone telling them we would have two dogs with us. They told us it was a $25 pet fee per animal. We arrive to check in and they say the first animal is $25. The second is $75. How that makes sense is beyond me. And on top of that they charge $100 for accidentals…? Would have been nice to know ahead of time?
They call the motel section “flats” however with the reviews I didn’t even think to look into what a flat was. Upon arrival I did, and they don’t show the building just the rooms… and a “shared balcony over the court yard” 🤣
if we wanted to stay in a motel we could have saved a significant amount of money. It’s loud (traffic) and for one door it’s not secure with only 1 lock. Like no doubt someone could kick it open- so a good nights sleep with someone with anxiety is gone, yay.
Driving from west Montana we wanted a nice stay, a good nights sleep and we did not get that.
The bathroom door did not shut. The sink took a long time to drain. One small towel per person.

We also wanted to stay here for the restaurant so close by, in the hotel. Yet it was closed out whole stay

Not the experience I wanted, as I begged to stay here for the night instead of a different hotel- I said tbis would be a better nights rest for me, and breakfast is steps away-was so wrong to do so.

Go stay at a larger hotel that isn’t a motel feel, and had breakfast included for cheaper than this stay!!!

Also they so elegantly say “shared balcony” lol no it’s a motel. So please keep that in mind

For some reason this is listed as a nice place to stay. To be clear: this is a converted motel, repainted to look nice but has no modern updates. Specifically, it acts like a young modern artistic locale and expects people to play LP records, but there is no soundproofing between the walls of the old motel rooms. This is a perfect example of what’s wrong in modern hospitality…then they market their original and upbeat restaurant, which serves “meh” quality food at an exorbitant price. This is the kind of place that your parents will go when trying to pretend that they’re hip.

This hotel is absolutely gorgeous and such a great place for a Wisconsin weekend gateway! Me and my partner wanted a mini weekend gateway within the state and we didn’t have a particular place in mind to visit, we were open to anything. When browsing around some of the populated cities, we found the Oxbow hotel! I am so glad we found this place, it was truly the best weekend gateway we’ve ever had!

The hotel itself and room were spectacular and super clean! I love the aesthetic of the whole place as well. The record player in the bedroom was such a unique piece to have! Love that you could check out 3 records at a time for the room to listen too. In addition, you can check out some bored games for the room as well.

We read some other reviews before staying here, and some other reviews were negative. But after staying here the entire weekend, none of the negative reviews of this place make any sense because we had such an exceptional experience here!

This is the place to stay! No doubt, we will be back for another weekend gateway in the future at some point. We had such a wonderful time! If you have doubts, or are debating on staying here or not, just do it! You won’t regret it!

Staff welcoming. Hotel is clearly an oldie that has been remodeled as it still has the lingering smell. Room had small flying bugs that were bothersome. Informed front desk staff and response was simply "we know we have a problem." Bed was comfortable. Grab and go breakfast was coffee, water, granola bar, oatmeal.

I think the room was too expensive for what we got.
I could tell as soon as I got into bed that the sheets were not clean.
I slept on the bed and my sister slept on the futon and we both could tell our bed sheets were dirty.
The room smelled off mold,
stale cigarettes and body odor.
Had to call the staff to bring up clean beddings.
The only thing good about this hotel is the staff.
And I rented one of the nicer suites. 🤷

Made a reservation, on my drive there and called confirm, they said I had a room. I arrived and was rudely greeted by the front desk. Then was told I had no room. No apology or no effort to make it right.

Written description caused me to choose this place as a special night's stay. The concept is cool, but it didn't meet our needs. The remodeled hotel lacked enough plugs for our needs. The futon that doubled as a couch was super uncomfortable. I needed the plug, so had to not use the record player. There was black stuff in the grout grooves in the shower, which was creepy. Being able to borrow a thermos to take coffee to the room in the morning was nice.

Cute little motel, turned hipster, boutique, music and recreation, focused hotel. This place was especially helpful to me as the city did not have a bike share system, but the hotel itself has many bikes that they can rent out to you. I believe they also rent out canoes and other things as they have their own “outfitters.” The bikes came with helmets and a lock, and we use them all day to get around town which is very bike-able and scenic. I rented out a record to play on the record player, but was not able to figure out how to get it to play at the right speed, which was probably more my fault than the hotels.

This property is a great price for the area. It is definitely a very walkable location. There is an ice cream shop directly across the street and multiple restaurants within a 5 minute walk. I made my reservation via Expedia, so I have learned a lesson to always view the property website directly. I reserved a room with a balcony. My idea of a balcony is a little different. The room with the balcony is actually a room in the motel section of the facility. It is not a balcony, it is the walkway that goes by your room. If I would have realized this I would have booked the "patio" room on the first floor so we didn't have to drag our luggage to the second floor. My husband likes to enjoy a balcony at night. This was overcome a bit because they had a community hammock which he enjoyed. One of the other reasons we had decided to stay at Oxbow was because they had a restaurant and bar with great reviews. We did not realize these are closed on Sunday and Mondays, which was the two nights we were there. It is clearly stated on the website, but not Expedia.(Once again, I learned my lesson to go to the website.) The room was small but fine. They really did a phenominal job in converting an old motel into a trendy place to stay. It had a phonograph that we did not use. It did not have a coffee pot in the room, but we walked to the lobby to get coffee each morning.
Service was fine. Not exceptional, not bad. With all that said, for the price we paid, it was a great deal.

Loved this hotel! Visited my son attending UW Eau Claire and Oxbow was about 10 minutes away. Private entrance to my room. Nice, clean rooms. Super plus was the turntable and records available to checkout. Had tasty drinks at The Lakely the attached bar/restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive at both hotel and bar. Coffee in the morning was of great quality. There are games you can checkout and bikes though I didn't get to experience those amenities.

Conveniently located right downtown at a great price. Lots of fun outdoor activities and walking trails nearby. We stayed with our dog (2yo golden 50+ lbs) and it was a comfortable stay. They have record players in every room and you can check out vinyl at the front desk. We brought our own collection of vinyl for our getaway and it was lovely. Despite the "motel style" with the doors opening to the outside I always feel safe staying here and I don't worry about my vehicle parked in their lot. I HIGHLY recommend the Oxbow for a stay in downtown Eau Claire.

I booked in January 2020 for one night. I ended up not needing to stay so I had my mom take my reservation instead. She said the bed was uncomfortable, the room was too hot and wouldn’t regulate so she had to open up the windows (in the middle of winter), the walls were thin, there was “white crusty stuff” on multiple things across the room (couch, bed and other textiles) and to top it off there was p*rn on the tv when she turned it on. She complained in person about it but because I booked the room I needed to reach out myself but they told her I could get a free 1 night stay as compensation. I was in the area looking at houses to buy frequently so that was okay with me. I emailed them and they said nothing was in their system… and it didn’t matter because covid was shutting them down anyways so they couldn’t book me for a night stay. I asked for a refund then and they refused. I was super disappointed because it looks like a neat little place to stay over chain hotels but it was a horrible experience overall. I worked in hotels as a housekeeper right out of high school so I know the standards I was held to and I know the accountability that goes into room cleaning. This place misses the mark. Bring a black light.

Loved our stay from start to finish. Was trying to find a fun place for my husband and I to go prior to Christmas that wasn’t too far of a drive from the Twin Cities. This was it! & a huge perk- our dog got to come with too. French bulldog was lovin it. We stayed in the motel area which has its own immediate close proximity parking lot where they give you a permit to put on your dash. The room is so artsy with fun decor- cool wallpaper, local hanging art, and a huge unique perk- a turntable in your room! You can rent 3 vinyls from the front desk area and the selection was great. What a cool amenity! The room was clean, bathroom nice. Nice shower and good lighting. Came with 2 glasses for any beverages too. Loved to be able to walk to the main area and spend the evening @ The Lakely. Such a fun spot. The Josh Gallagher trio was playing live jazz and we had dinner and then came back about an hour later to enjoy more of their live music. Husband loved the chicken wings. Their menu is very sparse, not a ton of options but I’m sure that’s a product of pandemic stuff right now. Would recommend this hotel to anyone! Was great to be so close to downtown shops, Ramones ice cream — didn’t even have to get back in the car. Would stay again in a heart beat!

Don’t stay here if your looking for a quiet place to sleep. There’s live music downstairs even when the website doesn’t have any on the schedule… they play until 11:30pm…. Absolutely ridiculous for a hotel. How is anyone supposed to sleep with a live band playing right below their room?
Plus the ac is loud.. it won’t stop rattling… I got frustrated unable to sleep with all the noise so I went down to the bar for a drink and they don’t even have basic whisky… I will NEVER come back here.

We've been coming to the Oxbow for years but our most recent stay has us wondering if there's a better hotel for the money we spent for two nights here. It seems like some of the initial shine has started to fade - the rooms are starting to show some wear, especially in the shower area. The air conditioner was pretty weak and even with it turned all the way to 61 the room still got warm during the night. The french press delivery we used to love getting in the mornings was "not available" per the front desk during our stay, despite it being mentioned at check in as an amenity. Finally, the record collection that was so novel and fun a few years ago seems like it hasn't been updated since the hotel opened - we hope to find something new and interesting every year and are surprised to see the exact same options each time. Overall still a great hotel in a good location, but for the price we paid it didn't feel like we got our money's worth this time.

Stayed in the Queen patio room, located in the Flats- separate from the Hotel. Slightly updated motel room layout but with a few flaws- sink outside bathroom had no hand towel bar, bath had no area inside shower for your toiletries. Tile on floor wasn't as clean as it could be. Room was missing these amenities mentioned on site: no plush robe, mini bar, or snack tray. No luggage rack or area for suitcases- Clothes bar had a few hangers and that's it. Oh and I hit my head on an obnoxious bulbous screw holding the headboard to the wall (there are two so watch out)- why not use flat head screws people? The hotel lobby was really cool, the restaurant was very nice, and all the staff were great. Just expected more from the room for the price. Maybe the Hotel side is better.

It is a nice hotel and definitely falls into the up scale category amongst its Eau Claire peers. From a global perspective, it does not stand up to some of the top hotels it tries to imitate. The rooms are a bit dated and show some wear and tear and doesn't have all the amities you'd typically find in an upscale hotel (they do have bikes, but we went in the winter).
