Food, especially for the price was kitchen nightmare material. Croquettes were cold in the center. Salmon served skin side up. Steak was charred, though medium rare as requested inside. We had a wonderful brunch at The Statehouse today - Lainey seated us at a beautiful outdoor table and our server Roman was very attentive. We highly recommend the Avacado toast, the egg skillet and the French toast. We didn’t feel rushed to leave our table and we hope to be back again soon to try the Bloody Mary!

Came to town for the Coldplay concert. The boathouse was packed and we decided to try out the Statehouse. Best choice ever made! Food was delicious ive never been more impressed and pleased! The Father's Day special was the smoked prime rib hash with rosemary breakfast potatoes, peppers, onions, two sunny side eggs, horseradish hollandaise, smoked paprika. The food was good and the view of Lake Mendota helped to set a calm and comfy atmosphere for the morning. Service was attentive.

Beautiful restaurant looking out over the lake. The service was excellent, our server gave good recommendations and pairing suggestions. The atmosphere was top-notch. Nice lighting, dimmed but not too dark with stylish furniture. The food was the best, though! Excellent flavor profiles on their salads, tender steak, mouth watering truffle mashed potatoes, melt in your mouth roasted vegetables, and some of the best tasting desserts out there. The autumn cheesecake, give it a whirl!

I would give this place 5 stars, but for the maitre d's less-than-stellar response to a screwup in our reservation. We made a reservation for a window table on Sunday morning, but when we got there, she said it was a first-come-first-served basis for assigning tables, even though we were assured that our table would be reserved by the window.

The maitre d' basically shrugged her shoulders when we expressed our displeasure.

However, hats off to the wait staff, especially Natalie. She was amazing, and accommodated us once a table came open. Very attentive. She was great, and made our time at the restaurant so much better.

My wife, her sister and I spent an enjoyable evening at The Statehouse.The staff was very professional.We were seated at a table overlooking Lake Mendota. I ordered the Statehouse Filet - medium well. When the steak arrived the food service manager asked me to cut it open to make sure it was cooked to my liking. It wasn't and the manager said," Thank you, we will be back shortly." It came back just as I wanted it. I was impressed that he'd taken the time to know I was satisfied with the meal. The Amish chicken my wife and her sister ordered, as they said, was very good. The desserts were delicious.Sophia, our waitress, was most delightful. Overall a memorable dining experience.

The Statehouse was great! I will say the atmosphere is a tad on the upscale side and I was definitely not dressed for the occasion. No worries though, I was still able to sit down and enjoy a great meal. I stated off with the Chicken Wings in the traditional buffalo sauce followed up with the Roasted Salmon. Yes, the salmon is half eaten, sometimes I just dig in before I remember to snap a few photos but the wings and salmon were good. The risotto was OK. I haven’t had much risotto and I’m beginning to think I’m not mush of a fan. I finished up my meal with the Autumn Cheesecake and I was expecting a little more from this dessert than I got. I guess I kept expecting pumpkin cheese cake due to the color but it’s definitely a much or mild and softer cheesecake than what I was expecting. Overall, I enjoyed The Statehouse and my meal.

What a great experience, this place is a hidden gem. We were a group of eight But I must tell you the service provided by Satish was amazing, and the food cannot be talked about enough. Every single item we had ordered was so amazing. We had a hard time picking our favourite dish. Anyone that comes to this area must try this place. I promise you will not be disappointed, and the vibe is completely out of the world. One more thing any time I am in India. I have a tough time finding the clean bathrooms, but this place has paid attention to all these little details.

Posting a review here since my calls and emails to the Edgewater/Statehouse have been unanswered for months. Some background: my parents were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary by dining at the Statehouse on Sept. 22. I called and spoke with a manager about my paying for my parents’ dinner as a surprise for them, which was not followed through on.
Additionally, I had to cancel my credit card that I gave the Statehouse to pay for the meal because there was an unauthorized charge on my card following this incident. I cannot be certain the unauthorized charge was a result of the Statehouse’s carelessness with my financial information (having my credit card number written down on on a piece of paper that is accessible to others), but it is the only security issue I am aware of with someone else having access to my credit card information.
Below is my email to them on Sept. 25, after multiple phone calls unanswered and a request for a manager to call me to discuss the issue.

“Following up on this. I’m highly disappointed in the customer service from the statehouse. I called and spoke with someone Sunday afternoon and gave my credit card number and they confirmed my parents’ bill would be paid for by me, as a surprise to them as they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at the statehouse.
They (my parents) told me their server didn’t say anything about it at their dinner, and my parents paid their $250 bill in cash on their own.
I called and spoke to a host on Sunday evening (after my parents paid for their own dinner) after learning of the mistake, and she confirmed that she saw the note with my credit card number on the manager’s desk and that it must’ve fallen through the cracks since it was busy that night.
I’m disappointed in the failure to follow through on a plan to pay for my parent’s bill, and also very concerned about the fact that my credit card number was sitting on a desk that was not secured and available for other people to have access to. This is a financial security issue.
The hostess said Sunday evening that her manager was unable to talk with me and I asked her to have the manager call me back to discuss the issues. It’s been 3 days now and I have not heard from anyone.”

After the Statehouse’s oversight, I ended up taking my parents to celebrate their anniversary at Harvey House, where we received top notch service, food and drinks.

I'm a little surprised and saddened how the Statehouse seems to have diminished from their former glory. Last time we were here over the summer the menu was relatively extensive, offering a variety of tasty dishes and appetizers. Now, the menu was a single sheet of paper with very little to choose from, but prices have gone up of course. We ended up getting three appetizers to share (charcuterie, calamari and cheese curds). We've gotten these items before. and I can confidently say the quality and presentation this time was subpar. For $60, I would have expected quality appetizers, and not the basic quality items we received. Also, the calamari was soggy and mostly crumbs, about the same quality as Gordon's frozen supermarket seafood. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that this was a limited holiday menu and their main chef was sick or something, but looking at other recent reviews, I fear this may simplys be how it has become.

The Statehouse restaurant is a lovely place to have a meal and celebrate a special occasion. Request a table by the large bay of windows facing the lake. The menu features elevated American-style fare and the service was great. There is an on-premise parking garage for convenience. The restaurant will validate parking tickets, although, the validation did not work for anyone in our party upon departure.

Visited the Statehouse for the first time this evening. Normally I wouldn't give a restaurant with a 4.2 star rating a chance, but there are only a few restaurants you can boat up to on Mendota so we wanted to give it a try. When we arrived, the hostess said it would be 15 min wait for an outdoor table, an hour later we were finally seated. We were fine with waiting but we wish the estimated time was more accurate. It took another 10 min after being seated for the waiter to come by. We ordered everything all at once since we had waited so long and had plenty of time to look at the menu. We got the elote corn dip as a starter, which was confusing... because there was literally no corn in it at all and it only vaguely tasted like corn. It wasn't awful but not what we expected. I got the clam appetizer as well, which was disappointing. The clams weren't great, they came in a dish filled with... broth? It wasn't very flavorful. Honestly the peppers and micro-greens were tastier than the clams. I got the steak sandwich for my main course. The waiter didn't ask how I wanted it cooked and it came out very well done and tough. The flavor was... also confusing. It's supposed to come with salsa but it tasted more like pesto and salt. Cheese curds were rubbery and unnecessary. Someone who wasn't the waiter came over and asked how things were and I said okay and he asked why and I explained the sandwich was really well done. He offered to take it back and have a new one cooked less well done sent out and I was hesitant because I didn't think that would actually make the sandwich much better but I did take him up on the offer. When my new sandwich came out it was pretty much cooked exactly the same, maybe slightly less well done. Meat was a weird texture, kind of like what you'd expect from a pot roast. The sandwich fell apart in my hands after a couple bites and I honestly just gave up, the flavor was inedible. I'm not a picky person so I really did try to eat it but it was impossible. Even the side salad was weird and inedible, it was coated in like mayo with some sweetness mixed in. They ended up taking the dish back and removing it from the bill which was a relief. My partner's burger was okay, if it had been like $10-12 there would be no complaints but it wasn't, it was very overpriced. He also got a neat J Henry bourbon, and that was $19. I was absolutely shocked by that, that is 1/3 the cost of the bottle. All he drinks is neat bourbons and we've never encountered one so costly anywhere in Madison, even at some of the more expensive restaurants in the city. For $19 you could get a higher quality and better tasting whiskey at Cask and Ale. His truffles fries were okay, a bit greasy, but $4 to upgrade the fries seemed like a bit much. His left over fries basically became my dinner unfortunately. I did relay some of this feedback to the waiter and the other person who checked in on us and it was well received and they were receptive to taking the feedback to the manager. Honestly I got the vibe that they weren't surprised by any of the feedback. The cost for this experience was over $100 after the tip and a lot of time, we could have gone to a lot of other restaurants in the city and left full and satisfied for the same price. Unfortunately we won't be coming back even though we really wanted to like it. If you're boating and looking for food on the water, go to the Union's BBQ stand, it's amazing. 2 stars given for the view on the balcony only.

I hate to leave a bad review, but I feel like I need to warn the public about this one...

My friends and I dined here last week. The food was extremely expensive and very small portions, but quality was not worth the price. Especially one dish that was just a few pieces of cheap ravioli with some peas on top...I could have made that from Walmart ingredients for a fraction of the price...and one of our friends was not even served his dinner with the rest of us, it took so long, he had to grab it as a to-go on the way out...

THEN, they charged us for a dessert that we didn't order and charged us for a dessert that was supposed to be an on-the-house birthday complementary gift to one of our friends. THEN a day later I noticed they added an extra $58 charge to my card, without explanation. I had to call and email multiple times to get it addressed, they promised they would refund me, but they ended up refunding SOMEONE ELSE INSTEAD. I had to call and email for a week to get this problem addressed, they finally did give me a larger discount, but honestly after all the trouble and hassle, I think The Statehouse should have refunded our entire meal. This was a terrible experience, took hours of my time to get it fixed, I don't know how they could have made so many mistakes and been so careless. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FINE-DINING RESTURANT, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY AT THE STATEHOUSE!

Disappointing birthday brunch. I had to work really hard (I mean REALLY hard) to get through to make a reservation because it was over 8 guests. After leaving 3 voicemails, I finally did have 3 returned calls from separate people over the course of a few days. Birthday cinnamon roll served in a to-go box (fine whatever, it's free) but it wasn't free - I was charged for it. After several more phone calls - my credit cards was credited the cost of the cinnamon roll but I don't know what math was done because it didn't cover the tax and tip that I paid on top of it. Too much work for me to go back anytime soon.

We had a wonderful Easter brunch experience. Can’t wait to go back for more.
The place was crowded and busy, but the staff was very attentive and friendly. We were lucky to have a table by the windows overlooking the lake. Our table enjoyed the ‘mimosa sampler’.
The plates were plenty full with food. The French toast slices were light and fluffy. It was plenty of whipped cream and fruit to complement the dish. The side of scrambled eggs was prepared perfectly, not overcooked or runny. The hashbrowns, prepared with some red and green peppers, we’re also very tasty. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfectly salted; no need to add more salt.
What I will order the next time will be the smoked salmon Benedict. It’s a wonderfully balanced dish. The salmon had a nice smokey flavor, not a strong salmon taste at all. The eggs were also poached perfectly, with the runny yolk complementing creaminess of the sauce. Capers add a nice little bite to the whole dish.
I had gone to the state house several years ago and did not have a good experience. Today’s brunch experience was certainly a redemption. I can’t wait to go back and try other items on the menu.

First time visit. Went for brunch for a birthday. Great views! Food was tasty. Service was not that great…maybe because it was late Sunday morning? Not sure. But the experience left a sour taste, unfortunately.

I understand the service industry has been hit hard the last few years so I don’t want to be too negative, but my Wife and I ordered two Wisco bloody Mary’s that came with chasers. Someone other than our waiter brought them out with one chaser. We told the woman we needed one more chaser. Got the chaser…no big deal. We then noticed we were given the Statehouse bloody, not the Wisco bloody. So we let our waiter know. He apologized and went back to the bar to have new ones made. After 15 minutes went by, the waiter came back and told us the bartender told him the bloodies we were given were the Wisco (they clearly were not because the garnishes belonged to the Statehouse bloody, not the Wisco). I did point this out originally but for whatever reason it didn’t translate. But, we just sucked it up and drank what we were given.

I think this is what bugged me the most…being told we were given what we ordered but in fact, it was not. I would think the waiter (maybe not) would have known this. There are only three different bloody Mary’s available. Pure speculation…did the waiter even go back and ask the bartender to make the right drinks…?

I wouldn’t have posted this otherwise, but again, I’m not sure why this all happened. Again, great views and good food…not great service.

We had the weekend brunch on a Saturday. My partner had the statehouse pancakes and I had the avocado toast. Both were excellent. Very pleasant wait staff. We thought it was reasonably priced--in fact we thought that it would be much more expensive given the location.

The restaurant is part of Edgewater hotel. Before you get to the restaurant, there's a wall filled with pictures of famous Wisconsinites. Really nice, especially if you are with someone who is visiting the state. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, with a really great view of beautiful Lake Mendota.

They brought the Lobster ravioli to the table and I thought it was an appetizer...5 ravioli. All this for $60 per person. No hint of the quality that used to be the Edgewater standard exists. Our service was incredibly slow all night. I Waited 20 minutes to get a glass of wine with dinner. Wanted to order a special drink from their menu, our server had ZERO CLUE what we were even talking about, spent 15 minutes trying the figure it out, we put in our order for the fancy drink, 10 minutes later, were told the bartender is just having trouble figuring out the drink and we were presented with the check with no offer of desert. We came during my Epic trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary and enjoyed a view of the sun setting over the lake throughout dinner. The service was friendly and quick, and we were seated at a table by the window with a great view of Lake Mendota. The food was quite delicious. We started with the Seared Tuna Tatake and the Spanish Octopus, and both were excellent. We then had the Statehouse Filet and the Grilled NY strip. The Filet was excellently grilled, so soft, and at perfect temperature. The grilled NY Strip in comparison was quite the workout to cut honestly, but it was still a nice medium rare.
The reason I dropped a star is cause the cocktails are in need of improvement. They do not taste bad, but at the same time, they do not taste great either. Come here for the food, and have drinks at one of the unique bars on State St. after.

The Statehouse at the Edgewater Hotel has all the elements of a 5 star restaurant with one glaring exception. The size of the portions in relationship to the prices stated on the menu absolutely incongruent and frankly, ridiculous. When one pays over $60 for a filet steak the size of a custard bowl and entree of halibut for over $40 so small it could be consumed in three fork fulls leaving the table hungry would be an understatement. My wife and I were celebrating our 56 wedding anniversary and the celebration ended when we got the bill. Over $110 for two entrees the size of an appetizers. No view is worth the prices charged to leave hungry. We will not be back.

I was so excited to eat here again because I knew if would be excellent. Not this time unfortunately. The NY Strip was a dollar size steak and I could only eat about a half dollar size in the end because the grizzle, ligaments/tendons were so prevalent and even the marbling in the best part of the steak was not edible. Even my husband had to spit out a few bites. So disappointed. Enjoyed the drinks at the bar ahead of time.

Such a disappointing experience tonight when we attempted to go to the Statehouse for dinner. We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation and were seated promptly. Most of the restaurant bodes gorgeous views except for one side of the dining room. The structure of the building on the right side of the room creates an obstructed view of the gorgeous lake and sunset. So FYI, if you’re going for the ambiance, I recommend requesting to sit elsewhere. Which is what we did eventually after no one came to our table for over 10 minutes. The hostess moved us to the outdoor patio which has a beautiful view of the water and told us she’d send someone right away. But we waited another 10 minutes until a server finally came. No drink menu was given, and the server had to leave once again to get that. When he returned, he finally took our drink order and we put in for an appetizer. My husbands drink arrived and was wrong, and the server dashed off without giving us a chance to ask him to fix it or taking our dinner order. In the meantime, the table next to us was sat, greeted by a different server, ordered drinks, appetizers, recieved both of those and ordered their dinner before we even got our appetizer. Over 45 minutes past our arrival, our server finally asked us for our dinner order. At that point we decided to close out and leave, because at this price point the service should be so much better. This clearly isn’t a reflection on all the servers as the one serving the table next to us was on her game. And I will say the butter board we ordered for our appetizer was outstanding. But we’ve personally never received such poor service at a restaurant. So just something to beware of if you dine here!!

Disappointed by my experience with the host/manager today, however. Our extended family of 20 went for Sunday Brunch. We didn’t have a reservation. We inquired for one a few days in advance (called multiple times and left a voicemail) but no one got back to us, so decided to go as they opened to take our chances.

The host (I think he might have even been the manager?) was rude and condescending to us. We expressed that understandably we can go elsewhere if we could not get a table or if there was no availability. We did not have to be seated together.

Despite that, the host/manager gave attitude about how we had such a large group and wouldn’t know if we could even get a table or seat us together. We again stated were fine with separate seating, but he was passive aggressive and going off about how we should really have rented the room and can’t get separate checks (one bill was not even a concern for us).

Ultimately, accommodations were made to get us seated nearby and food served around the same time, all with an expected wait and little lag in service. Those were all reasonable and I appreciate how our family was able to enjoy a meal together.

Really though, if you are going to make accommodations anyway, is it necessary to be so rude???
A simple, “hey I’m sorry, we would love to have you here but we can’t do this today on such a short notice.”
Or
“We will try our best to accommodate you, please be patient. These are our policies fyi.”

Yes, turning us away kindly would have been better than giving us attitude and taking us in.
How you treat people is more important than the food and atmosphere you have.

Host was arrogant, white wine was warm, cocktails were good, waiter was good, food came out in a timely manner, beet salad was bland, chicken served at room temperature, halabut was delicious, raspberry sorbet delicious, biscotti was hard as a rock and flavorless. Summary: over priced for ok food. The view of lake Mendota is obstructed by a railing but is still nice. Other than the view, there was nothing else to help elevate the atmosphere. Would I recommend this place to a friend? No!

Just had a very lackluster meal at The Statehouse. It's a beautiful view and we came for a special occasion which I indicated on our reservation . At no point were we greeted or asked about our special occasion. Our server, when she came by was pleasant, but we were never offered drink refills. We weren't asked how our meals were. And service felt very inattentive and slow.
Overall we wished we had celebrated somewhere else for the evening.
From a food standpoint the mushroom bruschetta and the Wedge salad are really good. The taco starter was ok, we just wished there was more flavor and less grease. The salmon entree had wonderfully crispy skin that was very salty and covered an overcooked piece of fish.
For the price, there are so many other dining choices where you can spend your time and get exceptional service and a great meal - The State House will get a pass from us from now on.

We came on the busiest day of the year! 1st timers. We did get in! The tuna starter was not the best for the price. We ordered the Alaskan salmon and the halibut! Both were fantastic!!! Very good. Rating is relative to what they describe themselves as, "fine dining". This is not a fine dining restaurant, they overcooked the steak, overcooked the molten chocolate cake, they have a whiskey list but no whiskey rocks, etc. It's like they play at being fine dining with the looks of the dishes, but the service and flavor is not in the fine dining class. They do not serve any unique cocktails and the ones they have are just average-tasting.

If this was described as a fancier diner or a mid class restaurant I would have rated it higher. However, not as advertised for "fine dining". The presentation is pretty and the taste is just ok, they are flying on the coat tails of being in a nice hotel and on the water.

Credit where credit is due, the only dish that seems to be aces is the cheese curds.

I recently dined at the Statehouse Restaurant in Madison and while the food was good and the service was great, I found the prices to be much higher than expected. In fact, the cost of the meal was quite prohibitive.

Great views and high end wine list. This is an expensive restaurant serving sub-par food. I had a mushroom bruschetta which was good and was excited to try the a pasta dish. I asked the waitress if the pasta was made in the house and she said yes. This was boxed pasta with no flavor. I had two bites and kindly told the waitress that the dish was not for me. She apologized and asked if I wanted something else, I declined. I was still charged for this dish. If you are trying to impress a date or in-law this is the place. If you want food that doesn’t make your wallet scream I’m sure there is another place.

UPDATE: went from two stars to one. Was up all night with what I believe is food poisoning.

Reservations at 645. Was there at 630. Three older couples got a seat before us while we waited fir the table. We questioned why and was told “ they were first”. We were told we were next. We were. Got sat down and had not one person to tell us they were going to be right with us. BUT the table tgat sat down after us were taken care of instantly. Water and drink order. We left without anyone saying anything to us after 10 minutes. I emailed before we left the parking spot on Saturday night, and still haven’t gotten an apology response. What a terrible experience. Planned on spending at least $150, but we ended up going to Monks in Middleton for half the price and great service

Summary: HORRIBLE bar service, excellent table service, terrible drinks, substandard food for exorbitant prices.
Good: Wonderful server and lake view.
Bad: Everything else. We arrived early and went to the bar. The bartender looked up but did not acknowledge our presence. We waited patiently while he finished mixing 2 drinks. He then walked to the opposite end of the bar and took the order of a woman that had just arrived. We walked out and went to dining room. I mentioned to the manager how the bartender ignored us, but heard nothing back.

At the dining table, my brother and I ordered whiskey sours because the menu said it was topped with egg whites. It wasn't. Tasted like a bad mix. Ordered truffle fries for shared course. They were soggy. I ordered lamb loin. It was dry. My wife ordered chicken. It was dry. Meals of the others was OK. Also, be aware of the 20% service charge added to the middle of the bill. It's easy to miss.

Not a chance we will go back. Has the price of entry-level fine dining but only the table service met those standards. Bar dives have better bartenders and dried out lamb and chicken is unacceptable. Save yourself a few hundred and go to a diner for better food. The table server is the only reason I gave them 2 stars.

The Statehouse Filet was excellent, and the Wisconsin Fish Fry is always a winner, but the Garganelli Pasta was superb! Our waiter, Cesar, was wonderful.

One minor issue - 1. We had a table of six and 20 percent tip was automatically included on the detailed bill, which was absolutely fine, but when the bill came back for signature, the detail slip was not included and a tip line was on the slip. After a few of the wonderful old fashioneds here, it would be easy to just fill in another tip. Even though I Do believe in overtopping waiters, I did not like having to rethink and ask about this at the end of a very pleasant and relaxed meal to make sure the tip was applied for our waiter, but not doubled.

Great meal, beautiful view, wonderful service. However the parking is definitely not customer friendly. There is a parking ramp across the street - no ramp or tunnel to the hotel. After a lunch lasting about 90 minutes I was shocked to find that I had to pay $9 to get out of the ramp. Why can’t lunch guests get complimentary parking. No wonder the Stateroom was nearly totally empty on this beautiful winter day.

My husband and I went as part of his birthday celebration; and I couldn't say enough about this place. Staring from the view, food and service provided. Jasmin B was our server for the night, and she was wonderful. She knew her stuff and was very attentive and pleasant.
Atmosphere & the view was great. We ordered a raspberry mojito that was delicious. The food was well prepared, filled with flavor, cooked as ordered, and presented well. Would definitely recommend the spanish octopus, the tacos, and mushroom muchetta & lamb.The staff at the front was courteous and provided a positive experience as well. We will definitely be returning.
