Would HIGHLY recommend dining here, the food is amazing!! The pork chop is fantastic, mini-potatoes were delish with the Cod, and The Uncle ! Janet’s Carrot Cake is probably some of the best I’ve ever tried!🔥
The service is outstanding! Our waitress Kate treated us so well, such a great experience!

Absolutely love the Cod fish fry. Big meaty pieces panko breaded and not soggy or full of water and good tartar sauce! Plenty of food, reasonably priced. The coleslaw isn’t my favorite but that’s only because I personally don’t care for celery seed. Definitely will return!

The food was amazing! We ordered the Fenwick and the pilgrim sandwiches. These were the best sandwiches my wife and I have ever had at a restaurant (We split them!)! The soup of the day was turkey and wild rice and it was amazing as well! We tried the Scotch Egg, we'd never had one, it was great! The staff couldn't have been more friendly and the atmosphere was wonderful. We ate at 4 restaurants while we were staying in Port Washington and Steerage was the best! Food, Service, and atmosphere was the best we experienced!

Had a wonderful time here for our anniversary, the staff was attentive and kind. They have a wonderful menu of comforting dishes and sandwiches that we can't wait to try when we go back. The specials were fantastic both for dinner and brunch. Our waitress was wonderful, always attentive, prompt and engaging. Highly recommend this experience!

Stopped for lunch midweek, along our travels.
Bartender/waiter was helpful. Hubs has turkey dressing sandwich. I had beef barley soup and Maldon bread with tomato oil. All were incredibly delicious. When you cook for others on a daily basis it's nice to be treated with such tasty, nutritious food. Kudos to kitchen staff. The place is comfortable with relaxing music and ambience. We enjoyed the Steerage theme surroundings.

We would highly recommend The Steerage restaurant. The place has an incredible vibe, mainly due to the warm and friendly staff. As soon as we walked in the door the receptionist made us feel welcome. Behind the bar, Michelle and George were so very helpful and attentive. The food was delicious!

Steerage is truly a gem!
Besides the food being wonderful (brunch & dinner) they go above and beyond to accommodate my child with severe food allergies (dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat and soy). They ensure he never feels left out, offering ample food choices for him. It’s one of the only places he can eat french fries because the standard of their food and fryers are so high.
We love the Steerage and their team!
Ps: Don’t skip dessert

A really cool concept. We're all third class passengers in this boat, but the service is first class. The restaurant is classy but not pretentious. The Clam Chowder was so good! The fried walleye was so flakey and fluffy and so fresh. This place is a must in Port Washington if you're looking for a unique setting and delicious food. It really is not hard to find with a sign outside pointing you towards the location.

Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've ever had!
From the moment we sat down, the service was unlike anything I've experienced—in the best possible way. Our server, Justin, was an absolute gem. With his sharp wit and perfectly timed humor, he had us laughing through the entire meal. Whether he was offering to cut the crusts off my grilled cheese or warning that I couldn’t have dessert unless I finished my apples (mind you, I’m a fully grown adult), his playful banter made the night unforgettable.
And the food? Incredible. My dining partner ordered the pork chop and described it as “melt-in-your-mouth, umami perfection.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. They said every bite was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection.
The drinks were just as impressive—beautifully presented and delicious, rounding out a night of amazing food, great vibes, and truly top-tier service.
Do yourself a favor and eat here. You won't regret it.

Met family here for the 2nd time today and while the service is excellent the food portions are really small for what you pay. I ordered the walleye plate which only came with 1pc of fish and some fries for $28 I felt a bit ripped off. And it was pretty bland.

This was the second visit to The Steerage for my wife and I, and like the first time, the food and service was exceptional. The Steerage has a good selection of entrees and sandwiches on their menu as well as daily specials.
My wife had a Reuben sandwich and I ordered a walleye platter which was one of the specials that evening. Both were excellent and the walleye was done perfectly. It was the best I've had at any restaurant.
If we lived closer to Port Washington we would definitely be regular customers, but even occasionally, the out-of-the-way drive is worth the dining experience.

If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, this spot is perfect for brunch and a great Bloody Mary. They make their bloody mix from scratch and it is definitely an award winner. I tried the special—a crab cake eggs Benedict—and it was absolutely delicious. Seating is somewhat limited, so arriving early is a good idea. With few breakfast options in Port Washington, this place stands out, and we’re already planning our next visit!

Relatively a cool location in a old Port washing haunt! Only many old-timers will remember this place! not the new comer's condo renter's! LoL! Ok first I /we feel terrible in arrival a elderly couple was trying to gain entrance to this NON ADA friendly location, sadly as we walked past to gain entrance by the time my fog induced brain had me go back upstairs to mention less / easy steps in the rear of the location in the Old A&P parking lot, they had left! 😟☹️
Ok the saloon bar tender we new from his previous job, that said! Food was served fast and wonderful! Definitely will return!I had the special lake Walleye, Mrs had the menu fish fry cod or haddock, with amazing small mini potatoes! fabulous! Prices are fair for having real fish vs antibiotics farm raised crap! Code words most miss!
Service was spot on!
Price's normal for the quality of food! Keeping the Luxenbergers
On the far North side of town is a breath of fresh Air! For their crappy $10 fishfrys 😁😉
5:00 pm it starts filling up, we're lucky to arrive early on a Friday! Decorated mostly in ocean going pictures, but what the heck, guess our great lakes schooners didn't have steerage but some pictures of the side Wheeler Niagra lost several miles north with massive loss of immigrants now that lay at the abandoned Union cemetery that weren't recovered by family, or the Phoenix lost few miles north near Amsterdam loaded with dutch setter's
So great food, service, location, prices to show they are looking to pay the horrific rent requirements due to Port Washingtons incredibly high taxes, and landlords buying in at catastrophe high prices! And get a great loyal client base! Not section 8!

So this might be my new favorite spot in the area.
The Fish & Chips (1853 Platter) was phenomenal, as was the Clam Chowder. It was so good, I came back for lunch 2 days later to try the Pastrami Sandwich (which was on special), and it, too, was incredible!
It's a cozy place in the basement, and the staff was delightful. George, in particular, was great! Plus they consider themselves a gin bar, which is not only unique, but right up my alley. I look forward to the upcoming gin tasting events!
I will certainly be back... Save me a spot at the bar!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. My favorite " new to me" restaurant discovery! Third time there.... twice for brunch ... yep went once for brunch and had to go back again the very next week. Great quiche! Yummy yogurt and FRESHLY made granola w/fresh berries special ( seriously I have never had better granola --- I never realized there was a big difference between regular and GREAT granola but now I do!) .... and my son loved his Irish breakfast. Ohhhh and the bloody mary beautiful and yummy. Had the same waitress for both brunches....she was very attentive.
For date night one night we both had the Shrimp A La Arrabbiata. It was so d-e-l-i-c-i- o-u-s!!!! I would have prefer the tails taken off but my date argued that it actually is typical at upscale restaurants to leave them on and it adds flavor 🤷🏻♀️. We loved the unique ambience, great service and well poured drinks.
Oh and even though we really didn't have room for dessert, we ordered some anyway. We shared a Bitter Sweet Chocolate Pudding and Janet's Carrot Cake. I promise no relation, but it did entice me to try it and am I glad I did.... sooooooo good.

Food was good and while server was nice he was limited by bad business practices by management. We had 16 people and were told they couldn't split the bill (which absolutely is silly in 2024). Then the 3 bills we did receive (apparently they can split them)were completely unintelligible to decifer. Food was very very slow to come out but all in all I would say it was good other than the unacceptable lazy business practices. If we sat at 8 separate tables as couples they would have split the bills so why does our proximity cause us to have less value as customers?

Music and decor really plays into the sailor theme. Just caution that you will have to walk down stairs into a basement to enjoy this restaurant
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of their Reuben Sandwich. I ordered it bc saw that it was house made and shaved. It was probably the best corned beef I have tasted. It was thinly sliced and the flavor was all there without being too salty. The bread was toasted, and buttery. I swapped out fries for their New England clam chowder. Great flavor, but it was a little thinner consistency than I expected.
My husband got their fish and chips. The fish was crispy, and flakey. Cole slaw was crunchy and had a more vinegar dressing which he liked. Only complaint was that fries seemed like they were sitting for a little while. The tartar sauce was just alright.
Our server was very kind, and attentive.
Would recommend to anyone in downtown port Washington who wants quality meat, and some unique options.

Food and service were both good. However, we were rushed to pay, and were told we *needed* to leave (not asked) because they needed our table. I understand that it was a busy Friday night, but I still felt that was very rude. Because of that, I will not be back.

I cannot say how much we enjoy this place. The food, the atmosphere and the staff are amazing. We have never had a bad meal. Set in the style of 3rd Class Passenger accommodations. A hidden gem in downtown Port Washington. Tucked in a basement. A must try on any occasion.

My husband and I visited The Steerage Dining Saloon for the first time early this fall. My father was a chef for his entire working life and I fancy myself a good judge of excellence because of all my dad taught me.
I was completely impressed with the Steerage Dining Saloon. The welcome and service throughout our visit were top-notch. The atmosphere was so great. And the food...I'm not sure I can do it justice in my review.
Suffice it to say I had the BEST Pork Chop I've ever eaten. The House Potatoes were incredible as well. We had Carrot Cake for dessert, which was offered with a portion of proceeds going towards a great cause.
We loved our meal SO much that we purchased an exact duplicate of it to-go, so we could enjoy it again the next day. That should say it all. :-)
We even got to meet Michael so we could tell him, in person, how much we loved our visit. We travel through the area frequently so we'll definitely be back.
Thanks to Michael and the whole crew at The Steerage Dining Saloon for bringing something incredibly special to Port Washington.

We had the Maldon Pan Bread with Hot Tomato Oil which was delicious! You could eat the focaccia all on it's own, but the oil really topped it off.
My boyfriend had the Uncle and carrot cake, which he enjoyed but thought the beef could have been more tender.
I had the German Kasespatzel with bacon. It was very cheesy and gooey, but did not reheat well later, so I recommend finishing it in house.
Service and atmosphere were great, it's a really neat restaurant.

This place has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants for brunch. It's best on a cold, dreary day because the atmosphere inside is absolutely cozy, much like the steerage of and old passenger ship must have been for the immigrants crossing the Atlantic Ocean. And that's exactly what the owners of The Steerage must have been going for when they decorated the interior of this restaurant. The entrance is adorned with old photographs of immigrants and steamships, and other maritime artifacts, which makes it feel like you are descending down into the hold of an actual old steamship. The rest of the dining area reminds me of an Irish Pub, with folk music, Irish Proverbs posted on the walls and other authentic photos and decor. The location in Port Washington on shore of Lake Michigan complements the restaurant perfectly. Aside from a great atmosphere, the food is what draws us back. The menu has an Irish and seafaring feel to it. But also great brunch items, sandwiches, soups, good drinks, and always fresh. My favorite is the Irish Breakfast, which comes with eggs, baked beans, a roasted tomato, excellent sausage, phenomenal smoked bacon, toast, and roasted spuds. It's always great and pairs well with a cup of hot coffee. They also make a variety of good sandwiches, and their Bloody Mary's are some of the best we've ever tried. No gawdy extras hiding an inferior pre mixed bloody. Just simply good ingredients including bacon, mozzarella ropes, pickled mushroom, and a well mixed recipe. They also use pink beet juice pickled eggs in the garnish, which are flavorful and unique. I've never seen them used anywhere else and makes the Steerage Bloody absolutely one of a kind. I hope this place sticks around for a long time to come because it truly is a treat for anyone looking for something wholesome and special. Makes a great date spot or a good place for family to gather on a Sunday morning. Our compliments to the owners for creating a special dining experience.

This cozy restaurant turns out some spectacular food. I visit Port Washington at least once or twice a year and I found this place accidentally and now it’s my favorite place to eat. The staff is very kind, even when busy. The menu is varied and interesting. I’ve had the 1853 platter, which was a thick plank of crispy, perfectly cooked, flaky cod with a panko coating. The coleslaw that came with it was vinegar based and much appreciated over the usual mayo. The Cioppino was full of fish, shrimp and mussels and a steal at $18. It came with garlicky toast to dip into the tomato base. They are donating $1 from every piece of carrot cake sold this month and that cake is not to be missed. Loaded with carrots, it’s topped with the traditional cream cheese frosting and it’s moist and delicious. Try the specials as they showcase the talent in the kitchen and they are outstanding. Everyone that ordered the pork chop raved about it. It may be my dinner tonight. The drink menu is on point. They have a rum punch called the Scuttlebutt that contains Wisconsin tart cherry juice and I could drink several of these but shouldn’t. It is surprisingly not overly sweet which most of these drinks tend to be and the cherry juice is the star. Luckily they sell this by the pitcher because you will want that many. Also delicious was Apple of my Rye. Perfectly balanced with the Apple flavor shining through. The location is in the basement of a building and it’s decorated in a way to feel warm and inviting. This place isn’t stuffy or highbrow. It’s a restaurant you can eat at again and again and families are welcomed. It’s top notch food in an unpretentious setting.

Our group of 5 dined last Friday, fish dinners served were underwhelming. My wife and I enjoy a good fish dinner these were not. Waitress never refilled waters at the table or offered glasses for the cans of beer . No tap beer offered. Pluses were the clam chowder and the pork chop dinner one of the guests had for dinner. Broiled cod was watery and Panko crusted was reminiscent of cafeteria food. If I return it won’t be for Friday fish but may try one of the sandwiches on the menu. An entree that is best served for lunch.

Amazing little gem! We found it while visiting from out of town, it was a cool and rainy evening and happened upon their sidewalk sandwich board that advertised warm pan bread and soup… That’s all it took for us to decide where we were eating! You walk downstairs into a very cozy, european feeling dining room where we found a perfect booth to sit at and had the most amazing home cooked meal ever. Great cod, great porkchops, amazing pan bread and amazing service! We can’t wait to come back! If you’re looking for a place that’s a bit out of the ordinary, you’ll be glad you chose The Steerage :)

In a time when it’s hard to find anything great to say about most dining out experiences… I’m very happy to say this is the best place we’ve been to in the last two years by a mile. Yeah, it’s in a basement. Yeah, it’s kinda small. But I don’t think it would work as well in some “nicer” spot. The most expensive thing on the menu is 13$. But get the bloody! And the grill cheese sammich! Both very good and 11$. The soup was actually very good too, something mushroom and dill? Really, I can’t wait to go back. Great staff! Sue was great, very patient and had an actual personality. Such a rare find these days. Anders was our bartender, he too has a personality. They actually seemed happy to have us there instead of inconveniencing them. The high back booths are nice - private feeling and I guess “safe”. Certainly a lot better than plexiglass or weird cloth partitions I’ve seen in other places. Place was pretty busy, and I can see why.
Update 8/2023:
Sadly, like all resturants in Port for some reason, The Steerage has kinda let it go now too. Now, that same pictured bloody and little chaser, with modest tip, is going to run you more than 22$. Without the chaser, and Titos, it was 16.34$. I know everything somehow magically costs more these days... but thats simply priced me out all together. 45$ for two bloodies? Yeah, thats just not what I'm looking for anymore and I can no longer recomend what was once the best place to go in Port. None of the staff work there any more, that prompted this review. Frankly, thats a damn shame. If you go here for a brunch with your significant other, you can fully expect to spend at least 80$. In Port. In a basement. Just over half that will get you an awesome experience on the lake in Milwaukee, or in a more "grandmas house" feel in Cedarburg. Probably still the best place to go in Port for soup and a sandwich - just expect to pay steakhouse prices.

We love Port Washington and am so happy to find a new restaurant that actually opened during all the crazy covid madness while others were closing. The place has a cool nautical vibe and titanic pictures all around. The booths were high and very private. The service was Great! The girls are super friendly and accommodating. We had the eggs as Appetizer, and I highly recommend them. My gf had the beet sandwich with goat cheese/honey, which was great. I had the Cioppino, and the sauce had some spice but excellent. The fish was great, I wished they pulled the tails off of the shrimp, though. After dinner, drinks were so good. Also had a side of the Spaetzle, which was excellent.
My only complaint is the stupid little wine glasses! Get some real wine glasses, please. We will definitely be back.

A cool and cozy pub-style bar and restaurant. A wonderful atmosphere; the staff was amazing and the food was delicious!
Everyone on staff was very friendly, attentive, helpful, kind...all-around fantastic customer service. One of our group has a food sensitivity and the staff were ready to help with suggestions. Our waiter George, the owner, and even the staff from other tables were so effortlessly friendly and quick with a smile and a little chat.
We had the 1853 Platter (fish and chips), and the Spinnaker Salad, followed by both the desserts: Bittersweet chocolate pudding and Milkmaids Square. We also tried the Dark and Stormy cocktail and the Elderflower Spritzer. Everything was delicious! Wish we lived closer so we could visit more often.

The place was hard to find, and I saw several customers enter the front door n leave. The establishment is located in the lower level and hasn't signage stating that. The stairs were very steep in the front.
Ordered Cod fish fry and Choppino, and both dishes were exceptional. George was our server and was very attentive. Seating is limited but overall a hidden gem. Look forward to trying more dishes.

Excellent food! My husband and I stopped in for dinner during our anniversary trip. I love all things "Titanic" and this reminded me of that. The atmosphere feels like an Irish style pub. The tall booths make conversation easy and private. The food was amazing! We tried German pickled and beet eggs; they were great! The Spaetzle was fresh and my husband enjoyed his fish. Super crunchy! We also enjoyed a Scotch egg. The root beer was also tasty. Overall good experience. Service could have been a little better; our waitress only came by once and never refilled our drinks. Food was worth the visit, though.
