Rude server, there were 6 people total in the restaurant and it took over an hour to get our food. Flies and dust everywhere. Staff wore dirty tshirts. We wouldn't go back even if the food was free.

This was our first time at The Vegetarian, so we were somewhat skeptical about what to expect since the place is so small and there were no other customers when we arrived at what we considered to be dinner time. However, we were warmly greeted by the owner and made to feel quite welcome.
Since we were unfamiliar with the menu, we asked (Ashok) for suggestions.
We decided on the Vegetarian Samosa appetizer, and our entrees were the Avial and Eggplant Marsala, along with Basmati rice and Garlic Naan bread After waiting just about 10 minutes, our Samosa’s were served along with 2 sauces and they were quite delicious. Then came our entrees. EVERYTHING WAS AWESOME! Flavorful, fresh and delicious. We were very happy with our meal, so WE’LL DEFINITELY. BE BACK.
It was well worth the 45 minute drive.
Thank you Ashok and Teresinha.

I love Indian food and I'm vegetarian so t was excited to see this as an option while in town for the day. I called in small a take out order consisting of vegetable pakora and paneer pakora. They were almost inedible. The paneer was super dry and kind of greasy not like any paneer I have had before. The vegetable pakora was two round slices of potato and some tiny hunks of onion and two balls of idk what it seemed kind of like a hush puppy but no discernable vegetables. The batter on both was very heavy handed. The restaurant seemed very dirty and the man who made my food and rung it up stroked his beard no stop while ringing me up.

I'm not familiar with Indian food. The owner helped me pick out an appetizer & entree. He even borrowed me his glasses so I could look at the menu! Both dishes were incredible! Great flavor! The rice it came with, spectacular! Portions were large. I will diffenately be back to try more dishes. I highly recommend!

The Vegetarian is a mom & pop, hole in the wall totally worth visiting. The couple who own the joint are charming and lovely and lively, and they’re running their business in the way that works best for them. The food was served quickly and it was outstanding, every bite exploding with flavor. The food will be served with plastic silverware, paper plates, in takeout containers. Their focus is outstanding food, not doing dishes or fancy renovations. I hope this restaurant is around for years to come, and if I lived in the area I’d be there more often than I’m willing to admit. I can’t wait to get back as I have plans to order my way through the menu as quickly as possible. If I could cook like Ashok I would be vegetarian - his food changed my life. We ordered the taster sampler, kadahi mushroom mutter, garlic naan and masala chai.

Very nice place with a sweet host, first time going here definitely will be back when I’m in the area. The food was good. I got the tasters menu for the appetizers. We tried the mango shake as well as a few other items.

We really should have walked out once my gut told me something was not quite right about the restaurant. The food was over cooked, everything was mushy and no flavor. The cleanliness of the restaurant left a lot to be desired. Save yourself the trouble and pass this restaurant by, trust me, your gut will thank me!

We wanted to like this place but they didn't make it easy.
Saturday at 1330 4 tables seated.
We ordered 3 appetizers. All 3 came and we didn't even have a glass of water.
The friend panner was clearly reheated in the microwave not good
The other two dishes had broth. It was so salty we weren't able to eat a single bite.

They offered to change the items we declined and they didn't want to charge us.

As a vegetarian couple my wife and I will most likely be back in the near future to hopefully write a way better review.
Everyone can have a bad day in the kitchen

First of all, the place is dirty, untidy, and flies were everywhere. We had to keep swatting flies off our food. I was very disappointed because I have heard great things about this restaurant. The food was flavorless. We have had very little experience eating Indian food, so when the food came out I expected the waitress to name the dishes we had ordered, but she just put everything in the middle of the table and didn’t say one word. I honestly lost my appetite because of the atmosphere of the place and how dirty it was. We will not be returning. And they had incense burning that was very strong, so keep that in mind if you’re sensitive to snake or have babies or small children with.

Love the name, love the food, love the owners. I ordered the Avila (plantains, carrots, eggplant, cauliflower and other vegetables in a coconut sauce) was SPECTACULAR. I have never had this dish, but since dining here it’s been on my mind so much. Each bite was bursting with flavor. The vegetables were wonderfully tender. The portion was large as well. My husband got the Eggplant Masala (garden fresh eggplant sautéed with herbs and spices). It was excellent! Tons of flavor. I believe this was the best eggplant dish I’ve ever had!

The couple running the restaurant are a hoot. They were friendly and hilarious! I had a great experience. 10/10!

I didnt felt happy after leaving that place. They put gratuity of 15% on food with tax so they charged me 6$ extra at top of my bill. I was expecting indian people around but unfortunately there was nothing like that. They guys are not professional, they overpriced everything, I ordered baryani 15$ it was not tasted well also I had to order raita 5$ separately which is usually included as side. Food taste was not good as expected from an indian resturent. They billed while pickup only and when we ask for the extra charges on total they get rude. Bad service, order time too late, behavior not appreciable. I am feeling like I wasted my money at this vegitarian food and place.

It’s a small place, with only two people working, so you might have to wait a little longer, but— the food is so worth it. Fantastic food and service.

Brought a skeptical friend who's only had negative experiences with vegetarian food; now he's recommending this place around.

We tried the onion bhaji, the avial and the Mysore dosa. The spices in the bhaji were perfect. The coconut chutney in the dosa was fantastic. Loved the plantain and eggplant in the avial.

Spice levels were good, although I sort of wish we had asked for "oh my God, it's melting the plate" as advertised on their website.

The place is clearly set up for takeout, but when we came in the owners served us on their finest paper plate China. Very friendly and funny.

What a great find. St. Croix Falls is lucky to have this gem right downtown!

Drove an hour only to find out its not a restaurant just a take out kitchen ...what a shame for Indian cuisine lovers living outside of 30 minutes drive.... whats the point of spending so much $ on the food, if by the time u get home to eat it the food is not freshly cooked. The cook is a genuinely authentic Indian cuisine cook dude. I wish they open the dinning before the new Indian restaurant hype and curiosity fades away among people living within 30 minutes drive.... for the rest of us lovers outside 30 minutes drive, as of now might as well drive to the cities to enjoy freshly cooked flavorsome Indian food. We can't wait for this awesome yummy kitchen to grow up to be a full service restaurant. Wish them the best.

Wonderful family owned restaurant serving authentic Indian food! Everything is Vegetarian and most dishes can be made Vegan by request. The flavors of the food are so wonderful that even if you normally eat meat you'll never miss it. If you like hot spicy food you can order it that way, but if you don't care for the heat you can order it mild and you will still be able to enjoy all of the wonderful flavor, but without any of the heat. I have tried many things on the menu and have loved everything that I have ordered. You truly can't go wrong with what you order. Give the Vegetarian a try the next time that you get to St. Croix Falls. You'll be glad that you did!

I am a lover of Indian cuisine. A friend and I read the reviews and thought we would take a drive and have lunch. We had the WORST food ever. All the food tasted the same, awful would be the flavor. Nothing was fresh. It was all obviously microwaved after being in the refrigerator for a very long time. Dry and with presentation completely lacking, in a fly infested site. Our server/cook/owner was in a filthy t-shirt I wouldn’t use Beto scrub the floors which needed it. Supplies sitting out on a couple of the tables!

Greasy, overpriced for small quantities with the food being surprisingly poor quality compared to Indian food we've had elsewhere. Delicious, the chief is a true master of the cuisine.

Everything was perfect, our group ate big and spent little. Every dish was a perfect example of itself, appetizers, entrees. The waitress was very pleasant and friendly. The chief was the one that brought out the last plate, but I am sure it was to collect the praise on a very well deserved meal.

So I wouldn't take this review too seriously since I didn't actually eat here. I tried to, but they weren't doing dine in (it turned out they had a small "take out only" sign on the front door). For some reason this wasn't on the Google Maps info. The door was open but we couldn't find anyone inside, and we had to holler at the kitchen to find anyone. We next tried to order take out, and they said that it would take at least 30 minutes to prepare even the simplest dish. I'm not particularly peeved and would definitely come back here. But they should probably be more organized and clear about the dine in situation.

I'm a local and while there are a number of establishments in the area I really enjoy, The Vegetarian is hands down my favorite. The storefront is unassuming and the interior low-key, but that shouldn't be mistaken for carelessness. I like that they've made a point of displaying a lot of local art.

I could seriously eat this food every single day. It seems unbelievable that you could get authentic Indian food in rural Wisconsin, but it's true! I have yet to try every single menu item but it's on my personal goals list. My favorites are probably the mysore dosa and the aloo gobi.

My boyfriend is a big meat-eater and he even loves the Vegetarian. He loves the palak paneer and the aloo paratha. He had some reservations about it at first because he didn't think vegetarian food would be filling enough, but it's so WHOLESOME. I eat the entire entree, and I'm full, but I don't feel sluggish or sedated like I would at a bar/grill with a lot of fried food. I feel ready to go explore and hike some of the area trails afterward.

I also adore Ashok and his sense of humor. He strikes me as one of those people who is doing exactly what he is made for, and knows it.

This is such a good restaurant!!! I absolutely love the food and I have never had a bad dish. I highly recommend the vegetable curry as it is my personal favorite, but they are all very good.

Excellent food and friendly owner. Eggplant masala very good. Normally I am a meat eater, but I didn't miss a lack of meat with this meal! Reminded me of the food my Indian office mate would cook for us in graduate school.

Small place, but interesting food. Not real familiar with Indian cuisine, but fun to try all the same. Found a few dishes I enjoyed and would try again.

We are from out of town and saw this neat place so we swung in. Group of 3 we aren't strict vegatarians but we all raved about how good it was. We shared 2 entrees, got smoothies and 2 desserts. It was all amazing. I wish we had this restaurant where I live. If I'm ever in town again I will be back. One of the best restaurants I've been to in my life. The coffee was even amazing.

Really traditional and good Indian food. The garlic naan gets a particular mention. But the Dahl was a bit lacking in flavor.

Imagine my surprise to stumble upon this gem in a part of the country where every restaurant review seems to begin with "great burgers and fries!" and you can go for weeks without seeing a vegetable other than a potato, pickle, or fried walleye curd. The ambience of this family-run place is wonderful, with wood floor, wood ceiling, stone fireplace, and tasteful furniture. The menu is nicely varied, featuring both northern and southern dishes. Rasam soup was sensational and bursting with flavor. Dal Makhani was a little gloppy and bland but still good, and the bindhi (okra) curry was nice and fresh. Paratha bread was very tasty. Some others feel the portions are small, but I do not find them so - the joy of Indian food lies in ordering a number of dishes to get a variety of flavors and textures, and the portions are perfect for this. Unfortunately the only wines are local and Californian, but both Taj Mahal and Kingfisher beer are available. Gulab jamon for dessert was pretty much the same as it is everywhere (good). Mysoor coffee is not something I usually like much, but I really enjoyed it here. Wish I'd known about this place a year ago, but I'll be returning when business next brings me to the area - can't wait to try the dosas!

First of all, the prices for food are way to high for the quality. The food I ordered was way too greasy, and came in small portions. The owner of the restaurant handed us the wrong bill. Finally when we finished our food, my total came up to $26.38. For the card I use it gives me notifications of when I make transactions on my my card. The owner instead billed me $31.66. I tried to reason with the owner but blamed it on the card company while arguing with me. This was probably the worst restaurant I have ever been to. First being served greasy food to being overcharged. If you plan on going here, do not use a card or tip the owner. Actually, just don’t go here, the management is shit.

This is pretty much the only place you can get fresh hot vegan fare in the entire area! It is so worth every penny spent here!! I love the ambiance and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. The owner here is a talented chef and makes some of the most amazing Indian dishes I have ever had the pleasure of eating!!

Excellent restaurant. The food was both delicious and unique. Many of the dishes were ones I have not previously encountered at other Indian restaurants so it was a rare treat. We will definitely stop in again. My only wish would be for more dessert options and the chai tea to be vegan but we had plenty to eat. Highly recommend this restaurant.
