I hate to give this place a bad review but I genuinely am baffled at the experience I just had here. We had a reservation for 6:30 and we were not sat until 6:50. When our waitress finally came over she let us know that our drinks were going to take a long wait which was no problem. We ordered one mixed drink and one soda. We got our food after one hour which was not a big deal, the mixed drink came shortly before the food but we still had not gotten our soda. The waitress had walked past us multiple times saying she was going to get us our drinks and they never came until 15 minutes after we had our food. We had finally gotten everything we had ordered and the food was delicious. Another issue had occurred when we needed the receipt from the waitress and she proceeded to tell us that we had not given her a tip and wanted to make sure we knew that we pressed $0 for the tip. The remark made us feel so uncomfortable even if we were going to tip with cash at that point the waitresses comments were out of line considering she checked on us all of 2 times throughout the night. Food was great service was something that we were not expecting would not come again. Even asking for the drink menu was met with a rude remark saying we had the menu already when it was empty with no menu in it. The waitress made this experience so unenjoyable.

We’re from San Diego and had no clue about the Wisconsin restaurant scene, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality here! The food was absolute fire 🔥 — every dish was spot on. We had the best service from Stacey, who kept us laughing all night and gave the perfect recommendations. Don’t sleep on the cheesecake, it’s next-level.

The outdoor bar was the perfect setting to enjoy a glass of wine by the fire — cozy and inviting. Between the incredible food, fun atmosphere, and Stacey’s top-notch service, The Velveteen Plum is now one of our new favorites. Can’t wait to come back next time we’re in town!

I have the luxury of staying in the Bantr apartments and having this roof top bar located in the same building complex. This place opens until 2 am and has an amazing view of the surrounding area. The menu are small but the food is surprisingly good. I would recommend the pork chops and adobo fries. 4/5, would come back just for the view and vibes.

Went there for dinner tonight and it was fantastic! I am a big foodie and have certain expectations when I go out to eat. They exceeded them. Everything was delicious. Our waitress was wonderful too! Highly recommend the food and the view.

We had a great date night here. The service was slow, but overall the atmosphere was on point. We sat on the rooftop, and it was a nice night, so the wait for drinks and food didn’t bother me as bad. Came here with my family and it was a confusing experience. It was raining but yet they had the outdoor bar open with people sitting outside in the rain? I also noted that the seating outdoors looked really uncomfortable, those basic trendy metal chairs that you can fit one butt cheek on. Those are always an automatic no for me. The bartender was pleasant and no complaints about the drinks- however I think calling a mojito that’s made with tequila a “margarita” is a little silly.

We had to seat ourselves despite having a reservation because the host pointed to a table and sent us on our way. Apparently we picked the wrong table because they made us move. The restaurant was empty except for one table, and they sat us directly behind them for some reason which we didn’t appreciate. Huge open space but cramming people together is crazy. All 6 of us were baffled.

They left the huge garage door separating the indoor from outdoor seating open during the hot humid rain, so it was miserably hot for our entire meal. We had to keep the menus to use as fans because they didn’t turn the AC on after finally closing the garage door. I believe it kicked on for a short amount of time and then it was instantly hot and miserable again because they turned it off. I had to step outside in the rain to cool down.

The service was some of the worst I’ve had in a long time. My elderly grandmother went through the entire process of ordering her food with no spice. Then the server asked her what she wanted to eat, leaving us all once again really confused. Her response to our confusion was to be condescending and say “well you asked questions about the food but you didn’t actually order it.” Huh??? She’s 87, read the room.

They don’t label the two jugs of water at the table as sparkling and flat so we didn’t know we were going to be drinking sparkling water until we took a sip. Not a fun surprise when you’re already overheating. When we asked the server for more still water and shared with her that the bottles weren’t labeled nor was it pointed out which was which, she was rude again and commented “if you shake the bottles you can tell because one of them bubbles.” Huh??? How were we supposed to know about this if you don’t tell us or label anything? And then to be condescending about it is crazy. She came back but didn’t bring a glass to pour it into lol. This happened to us twice in a row.

No signs for where the bathrooms were, we had to walk around searching for them because we were afraid to ask the server because of her condescending attitude.

Parking and finding the place was laughably confusing. If I owned a restaurant I would want people to actually be able to figure out how to get there. The signs for parking are black with purple lettering, so you can’t actually read the words “velveteen plum.” All you can see is that it says “BANTR” on it, the name of the apartment buildings. The signage outside the building points to the wrong door also. Nobody at the top to greet you or anything either.

The food was decent. I certainly wouldn’t go back and would not recommend it due to the service alone. By the looks of the empty dining room I’d imagine it’s not a busy place, maybe it was just a Monday but there were only 3 tables of people during dinner time (all crammed together in an otherwise empty room). If it’s a cost issue for turning the AC on, I recommend not opening a restaurant you can’t afford to properly temperature control. Miserable experience, which is too bad because the rooftop bar could’ve been a really fun addition to Wausau.

This is free feedback which you should be grateful for but I’m sure I’ll get some condescending response. Makes sense why the staff are so rude when the owner is out here insulting people who dare to leave a negative review, ensuring they never come back. Good luck.

Gave this place 3 attempts, and never was able to achieve the dining and bar experience described in the other reviews. Food was consistently terrible. Seemed like a combination of poorly sourced ingredients and unskilled preparation. Pricing during happy hour was bait and switch. Was told happy hour ended at 4pm even though signage entering the building, in the elevator and on the menu all stated happy hour went through 5pm. Overall quite disappointing given the place does have a great view of rib mtn state park, but really nothing else going for it. Wausau definitely has better spots to offer for food and drinks, go check something else out.

I would give the VP a 3.5 or a solid B rating. When you walk in it gives you this VIP appearance. Love the swanky rooftop just wished it was warmer so we could really enjoy it. Views were awesome from our table! And they accommodated our large group easily.

Meals were good but did not have that elevated feel it should have for the price or environment as it was served in a basket. While this may seem petty it really brought down the dinner.

We went to the Velveteen Plum last night for dinner. The service we had was great. However, the food was very underwhelming. All of the food was very under seasoned and all of the fish was missing lemon/lime to compliment it. We got the fish cakes appetizer, which was a bit dry and there was not enough of either sauce to make up for it. We got the blacked red snapper and skirt steak for entrees. The snapper was cooked fairly well, but the cheddar grits were congealed and texturally seemed to be couscous rather than grits. The skirt steak was awful. We asked for it to be medium rare and it was well done without any sear. Additionally, it was cut with the grain! It also looked like it was cut with a dull knife. We asked for it to be taken back and removed from our check, and our waitress was so great working with us. Finally, we sat outside and were underwhelmed with the seating out there. We had to put silverware on a bare, scratched white table and the chairs and tables were cheap painted aluminum. This and the waiter’s attire (all of them) seemed incongruent with the menu, attire of guests, and overall vibe that this restaurant seems to advertise. Overall, we were disappointed in our experience and we will not be returning. Save your money and go to another restaurant until this place gets it together.

I was very excited as this was my first time here and our anniversary dinner. We were offered a window seat, but not a rag to wipe away the light layer of dust bunnies. I was excited to try their ceviche but it was bland and served with tiny spoons, whole pieces of shrimp and tortilla chips which are quite the combination. Mojo-Cuban Pulled Pork and chicharrones were also bland and underwhelming. Guajillo Salmon was good but rice overcooked. The sparkling water we were served was lukewarm. This place was very hyped up so I was pretty disappointed.

The food is pricey and the only thing that was good was the fries but not equivalent to the price. Unique set up. The entrance is not marked well and neither in the parking. It is on the top floor of an appartment building. My food the was disgusting. One bite of the meat tasted like poop. I joke you, not I spit it out in my napkin and then I could not eat anymore but drank a lot of water to try to get the taste out of my mouth. I will not be going back ever. If you notice on the reviews of this restaurant if it is a negative review the person replying to the review insults the person making the review. Most restaurants apologize and try to remedy the matter. So, that should give you a hint on the quality and experience of this facility.

Came in with a group of 20 and they were absolutely prepared for us which was lovely. Unfortunately we were there at 5 and didn't leave until 9. The food took a while which was absolutely fine we knew this as we were a big group of people but I didn't expect to be there for 4 hours. We had 1 waitress and it just took forever from ordering to paying! Paying took like 40 minutes. Why didn't they give us another waitress? Food came and was not impressed. Very disappointed with the food as we paid so much money but the food had no flavor that night. Most things everyone had was questionable. I kept hearing people say where was the salt and why is this so bland. Overall I would probably come back and give it a chance on my own and not a full group.

My biggest disappointment is the food. I’ve been here three times, each time saying “give them one more chance.” The sides seem good (fries, mashed potatoes, chimichurri bread) but the mains are bad. Burger was way overcooked, skirt steak was tough and chewy, panko-crusted shrimp spent too much time in the deep fryer, and the ahi tuna seemed cheap (and possibly previously frozen). Staff was always friendly but a bit unprofessional (talking about back of house things the customer shouldn’t hear, clear training shortcomings, etc). Bottom line, I hope whomever is in charge (especially in the kitchen) sees this and gets their act together. Restaurants are more than just their view.

I've been here about 15-20 times since they opened. It's such a cool thing for Wausau to finally have a rooftop restaurant. The atmosphere in the evening on a warm summer day is wonderful with the gas fires lit. They hand out blankets when it's cool amd sunglasses when it's bright. Their cocktail are phenomenal. This is definitely more of a high-end restaurant and I would not recommend bringing young kids here.
The food is worth every penny. Last night I ordered a take-out of their Nueske's Bacon Burger for probably the 7th time because it's so delicious. It was overcooked last night, but I called them today and they re-made my burger on the house, which was really cool of them.
Thank you for the wonderful spot for food and drinks in Wausau, I'll be a customer for life.

My wife & I were at The Velveteen Plum this past Saturday, early evening. The place was very busy! We sat at the bar, had a drink and ordered some food. The 2 bartenders who waited on us, Lexi and Wren, were 2 of the best bartenders we’ve seen in the Wausau area in a long time! In spite of being very busy, they were friendly, very attentive, checked on us often and went out their way to treat us well. The food was very good and there were plentiful portions. I had the flank steak which was cooked and seasoned to perfection served on a bed of delicious mashed potatoes, companion had the tofu, which was tastefully marinated and seared to a delicate crunch. The food was outstanding, the service was attentive but not intrusive, and the view of the ski hill was lovely. We'll be back!

Avoid this place like the plague. Imagine TGI Fridays but half as good and three times the price. That is the Velveteen Plum. Cash grab built on location. Everything is cheap. Decor is boring and unoriginal. The chairs and tables are from Sams Club. The food is the type of corporate frozen food served at the hospital cafeteria. Nothing is fresh, and everything is horribly over-seasoned. Some in our party didn't eat more than a bite of their food. If you think Taco Bell is great Mexican food, or Olive Garden is authentic Italian cuisine, but you wish it was exponentially more expensive, then this is the place for you.

Oh my this place is amazing. Gorgeous views from the outdoor dining area,amazing atmosphere both indoors and outdoors, food is superb and very fresh, wait staff are incredible and it is very clean. I was just blown away by this place. Everything was top notch. It's rare to find a restaurant that gets every course of food perfect,but they managed to pull it off. I highly recommend The Velveteen Plum. Perfect for a romantic date or just a good fresh meal. Loved it!

My first experience here was delightful. Bartender Lizzie made me some super unique cocktails and her customer service was on point. She was super busy doing lots of things in the restaurant, but yet, she didn’t miss a beat!! Really enjoyed my time here and felt as though I was warmly welcomed and made a new friend! My three friends and I dined here to celebrate two of our shared birthdays, and we enjoyed our evening immensely. We started with drinks (each one was delicious) and an appetizer. We all LOVED the chimichurri bread. I want to go back to have that as my main meal--so good! We ordered the hamburger with Adobo fries, black bean salad, salmon, and steak dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meals (steak was overpriced, in my opinion). But, the sauces were the best part of each meal--the sauce with the fries, the sauce on the hamburger, and the sauce on the steak could be bottled and sold. Yummy! Because two of us had birthdays, we even got free desserts! What a great way to end our evening. Maria was a fabulous server who made our night even better. We all are excited to go back!

The atmosphere is what makes this place. The view from the rooftop patio is spectacular. The interior decor was a little chaotic and eclectic. The food was just OK. My friend really enjoyed her burger, but my pork chop was nothing to write home. It was slightly overcooked and the mole sauce lacked flavor. But the service was the worst part. After we were seated, it took our server about 15 minutes to come to our table and take our order. We ordered an app and our two main dishes. 45 minutes later, zero food had come out. Our waiter had not even been by once to check on us or to see how we were doing. I went to the bar and inquired about our food. Several minutes later our waiter came out with our main courses and mumbled something about the kitchen making a mistake with our appetizer (it was the chimichurri bread). We ate our meal, and our waiter had disappeared again. 25 minutes later we asked another server to bring us our check. She explained why she couldn’t run it for us, but promised to give several reminders to our original server.

I came here with friends for the first time for lunch. The atmosphere, decor, and view are amazing. The service was great, although was so few patrons I was surprised how long it took for us to get our food. Our server went over the details with us newbies. Another server kindly took pictures for me saying it was half of her job 😁 The lunch menu is pretty small and I wasn't thrilled with the street tacos. I'd like to come for dinner sometime and see if there's any difference. It's also kind of complicated to get to if you don't know where you're going. I can see people parking at the hotel thinking they can get to it from there. The parking is across the street from the building, behind Cricket. Then cross the street and go into the doors closest to Festival. Then you can take the elevator up and get to the restaurant / bar.

Our prior experience here was great but this time it definitely could use some improvements. The service was slow. We had our appetizers before we received our drinks. It wasn't extremely busy when we first were seated but the server we had wasn't great. Our beverages were good. The meals were half good and have bad. The breaded center cut chops and the skirt steak meals were good. The cacio e pepe & shrimp amd the lobster & gruyere were way too heavily peppered. I like pepper but it shouldn't be the only flavor you taste when eating.

For the price, I was sorely disappointed. Also, some of the dishes are kind of an insult to the actual Latin food they represent. The Cuban, for example, is just a pulled pork sandwich lacking all the nuances that would make it an actual Cuban. The mole sauce is laughable, which is probably why they give you so little of it with the pork chop dish. They charge $10 for bread....bread. That's actually on their menu. I live in the apartments below, so it's convenient, and the atmosphere is cool. Service is nice, but usually fairly backed up, and the food is woefully overpriced for what it is. The late night menu is reasonable. They should just make that their day menu and stop trying to be high dining. Or go to Oaxaca and bring back some real Mole, lots of it, so you can actually cover a pork chop with it.

If you’re looking for a fancy feel that’s easy to relax in, this is the place! Probably the best food we’ve had a restaurant in the Wausau area (had the steak and pollock dinner plates). Definitely recommend a blackberry No-jito if you want a fun, nonalcoholic drink. Our server was also super fun. Just watch the weather for whether you prefer rooftop or dining room. Had such an amazing dining experience at the Velveteen Plum. Our server, Reba, was so helpful suggesting appetizers and the bread appetizer was AMAZING!!! The view was stunning and the decor just made the experience that much better. The host was also very friendly and kept light conversation before and after the meal and that meant a lot as someone in the restaurant industry. Will definetly come again.

The atmosphere and chimichurri bread is unbeatable. The Red snapper and skirt steak was close to inedible. Very disappointing, because they were the most expensive items on the menu. The steak was over done and super tough (leather like) and the snapper had the skin on and extremely fishy. I’ve never been disappointed with snapper. Our waitress didn’t offer another option besides eating it and paying for it. We were super bummed. Will be back for drinks and rooftop but not food.

Update June 2024:

We arrived at 8:30pm on a Sunday night. It took several minutes to get seated. We were told to sit wherever we want. No one came to our table. They didn't even appear very busy. Maybe shorthanded? We ended up leaving.

Another time we were here and they ran out of gluten free buns. I requested a lettuce bun and got tiny pieces of lettuce. I asked for bigger pieces of lettuce but by the time they came most of my burger was gone. No apology or money taken off the bill. The bun is what makes the plant-based burger good and I wasn't told about them being out until well after I ordered.

My wife is vegan and got the ginger sesame tofu and, while it's incredibly difficult to make a vegan meal tasty, they really pulled it off!!

I had a veggie burger and it was the best I've ever had x100.

Lovely evening on the rooftop. This was our first meal here. With the blackened red snapper and tuna tartare coupled with the warm evening breeze, I could close my eyes and imagine I was sitting on a beach somewhere. Definitely a gem to have. The food was amazing. We enjoyed that the server didn't bother us every couple of minutes like an insecure people pleaser. Be confident in your product and leave it at that. This comes from reading the handful of negative reviews for dinner entertainment. Some people will never be satisfied. I speak as someone who has traveled many places in this world. We have a special gem in Wausau.

Parking has improved from last year when we came for drinks. I also checked on their gluten free awareness should I bring my mother here. They are aware and will be happy to work with this dietary need.

First visit based on a friend's recommendation. Located on the upper deck of an apartment complex with great views of Wausau. We sat outdoors despite the threatening rain. Cheap metal chairs and tables are not super comfy but practical for a roof top deck. Tuna tartare appetizer and fish tacos were yummy. Wow, what a groovy place with amazing views to go along with their rockstar customer service! Bartender Paige made our group some super-dynamic craft cocktails: YUM!!! I loved it! First time here and can't believe this little gem has been in wausau for over a year now. Bartender was nice and gave us our space but also checked in and chatted with us which was nice. Bougie yet not pretentious. All around great menu. Chimichurri bread is a crowd pleasing shared plate and a great bar snack. Cocktail menu is interesting but not everything is for everyone. Great beer selection and thank God it's not just a million different IPA's. They actually have variety. I'd highly recommend their Oaxaca old fashioned with their house made bitters. Your average entree item is $25 with a few items as high as $36. For a nice place like this, I don't think you can do better. Photograph worthy plates. Great service. Accommodating staff. You can't go wrong with this place.

Love the vibe and the rooftop dining experience. But service was a bit disappointing. I felt no body wanted to take care of our table. I see other tables getting taken care of while we sat waiting. Other tables getting their food and drinks and we still waiting.
And when someone did, she was swamped running around. No checking in to see if we were doing okay or needed anything. But I actually felt bad for our waitress when we discovered she was the only one serving alot of other tables when the others only served 2-3 tables. Food and drinks were just okay but the rooftop experience was great. Not sure if I'd recommend or come back.
