If I drove ten minutes out of town and took a right past a cornfield, this place would make sense. Instead, it's in the middle of a fancy, popular part of Middleton. (It probably fir my description 30 years ago, technically) So if you're looking for a pub food atmosphere right in town, this is your place. Food is great and well-priced (technically cheap, for the area). Staff is friendly and easy-going. Just a nice place if you don't like pretension.

This place used to be great. Not anymore. They removed some of the best items on the menu. I went today and had the worst chicken breast sandwich I've ever had in my life. Way over seasoned. Then I get the bill! $25.24 for onions rings a horrible chicken sandwich and a lemonade. This was my last time going here. I don't think it will be long before we say goodbye permanently to this once great establishment. Completely disappointed!

Stopped in tonight for a quick burger, fries, and beer. Sat at a table for about 10 minutes without any wait staff approaching us, even though we'd talked to one on the way in to ensure we should just seat ourselves. Saw two stools open at the bar so we moved there. Took 10 minutes for the bartender to even acknowledge us (grudgingly), then she proceeded to serve everyone who came to the bar after us. We left without being served...and won't return.

Came in on a Sunday evening for some burgers and sandwiches. My burger exploded due to poor craftsmanship and was unable to be consumed handheld, I needed a fork and knife, and I’m a burger guy so it was very odd. Then our waitress charged us for an appetizer of chips when we ordered just a side, which was x4 the price. While it was a fine establishment, overall I had a bad experience - we will not go again and I would encourage others to look elsewhere for grub.

During week nights stay away, it's very hit or miss. If the female bartender is working service is great, the male bartender not so great! If you can get the male bartender to talk or concentrate on serving customers, instead of trying to close down, you'd be lucky. You are in your yoga gear or better yet your tracksuit... you want a cozy spot but good naughty food. Well, head on over to Village Green! Great, friendly service and pretty good pub burgers. Besides burgers they have other items on the menu; all pretty much fried bar food. The fish fry is ok, but definitely not why I come here. And no I have never ordered a salad or such thing here, and don't plan on it. You can, but I come here for the burger! The atmosphere of the place is down to earth, old school tavern and I like it like that. Like the bar area seating close to action. Think till recently they were not taking credit cards, they have a cash machine inside but be prepared before you go. When I want a burger this place pops into my mind along with only 2 other spots in town. As far as drinks go, you are safer sticking with beer or a cocktail. Enjoy!

This is a tough review to write. I've loved the village green burger more than anything and sung its praises for 30 years. I came back in July 2024 with my new family from Seattle and the burgers were bone dry and a shell of what they used to be. I talked them up all month only to experience a charred, disgusting burger when we finally got back to Madison. It's not the same place anymore my Middleton friends.

I can't recommend this place as a food establishment. If you come here, come for the beer and atmosphere, but not the food, especially if you're a vegetarian.

I was excited to find this place because I love local dives, and this one had several vegetarian items on the menu. My husband and I both ordered the vegetarian chicken sandwich. We were not asked what type of bread we wanted, and it wasn't clear from the menu that there was a choice for this item. So we were quite surprised when our circular veggie chicken patties arrived on square RYE bread. Never in my life have I had chicken or fake chicken on Rye. The flavors were so discordant and quite unenjoyable. We learned later from reading about the other sandwiches on the menu that we could have asked for sourdough or a bun, but again, the waitress didn't mention this. I'm still so puzzled by the decision to make RYE BREAD the default option. Plus, they forgot the mayo and pickles I ordered with my sandwich, so it was dry and bland.

The fries were also not crispy or fresh tasting, and my iced tea tasted off.

Service was dismal too. The waitress didn't seem to know what she was doing, and she never returned to refill our drinks or check on us -- and it was NOT busy! We were one of three tables. We had to go find her to get our check and ask for boxes.

The one saving grace of this place is the atmosphere. The decor is super kitschy, which is really fun for kids to explore. It's also SO kid friendly -- they provide all kinds of coloring books and crayons for kids to pick from while they're there.

And it is vegetarian friendly, but go at your own risk...they don't necessarily know how to prepare it tastily!

This place was hoping tonight! We were outside during the Jazz fest. The patio was full inside was full! Over were a bigger party 5 of us that grew to be about 15! Our server was crazy busy . She was very attentive smiling and WOW great personality! I went inside to use the restroom and it was slammed inside! I seen our waitresses at a tables inside, outside never skipped a beat! And I must say her spunkiness made our experience amazing! And I must say even though our server was running her tail off she made sure everyone had drinks while waiting for food and was very attentive to everyone outside rather it was adults or kids and made sure everyone felt welcomed! All the staff working were very friendly and had amazing attitudes! I can’t not say enough great things about the service and food! Had to down grade my previous 35 year standing 5-star review after my visit tonight. It appears that a thriving downtown is the demise of something good. A well managed establishment would know that a jazz fest, Ironman, and a Badger football game means a very busy night---so when it took over an hour to be served an overcooked, dry burger it signaled trouble. A traditional, properly cooked, Village Green burger would have been worth the wait, unfortunately that didn't happen. The coleslaw, which I usually don't order, was flavorless and cabbage was starting to grey--stick with the fries. On the customer service front, it's not fun as a customer to hear waitstaff complaining about other customers, keep those conversations in the back of house. I'd suggest the manager seek out help from the Middleton Tourism Department with hospitality training. Perhaps things can improve, but it will be a while before I try again.

I stopped in this place on my brief trip to Middleton. It is a fun super dive bar. From the moment you walk in it gives great small town vibes. The old wooden tables, the weird lottery machines, old wood paneled walls etc. You can see the cook making the food next to the bar. This used to be our go-to place in Madison for burgers when we came to town for years. The servers were always super friendly and the same guy was always cooking and the food was awesome. And I always brought my foam pickle to see what the special was. Fast forward to last Friday night (Aug 16th).... Completely different. We sat at the bar as usual and the woman working couldn't have been snottier. She informed us that the pickles were no longer valid for specials (even though it was printed on the shirt she was wearing), because of the new owners. We ordered our usual burgers. They weren't awful, but they certainly weren't as good as they used to be. And to top that off, there was an OPEN container of fish fillets that sat on the counter the entire time we were there (almost 2 hours!!!) When I asked the cook why they were sitting uncovered and un-refrigerated that long, he looked at me like I was an idiot. Truly sad to loose a place that was so awesome for so long.

This place reminded me of my grandma's basement: dark paneled walls, kinda old smelling, aged decor. Place filled up so quickly, that I thought "there must be something about this place!" We ordered the crispy chicken sandwich with hot sauce, grilled chicken sandwich, burger with cheese and fried onions, and french fries to split. We loved our meals! The burger was perfectly cooked and the chicken sandwiches were delicious. Will definitely be going back. Highly recommend. Perfect example of not judging a book by its cover!

The Friday fish fry used to be our favorite fish fry in the Madison area, but it has totally changed in few months and after taking it out tonight we will probably never eat here again. Just a few months ago the fish had a delicious coating that contained cornmeal and the fish was very very good. The fish we had tonight had a mushy beer batter coating much like fish fries found at many other places. It tasted awful! I asked my husband to get it for dinner and I was really looking forward to it after a long tiring week of work. We were both extremely disappointed with the fish my husband brought home. My husband even said that he was complimenting the server on how good the fish is with a delicious breading. We've dined in and had the good fish fry several times in late 2023 and early 2024. We also carried it out just a few months ago. It has totally changed and it is now one of the worst fish fries we've ever had.

Had the fortune of eating at The Village Green in July of 2022. The cheeseburger I had there was exceptional; I think about it all the time. The best description I can give is that it tasted as a burger should (so "burgery"!). It seemed like there must be some special addition (onion soup mix or something umami) or technique that made it so tasty. The cook confirmed that it was just a straightfoward cheeseburger made simply. The service and authenticity matched the exceptionalism of the burger. Wish I didn't live so far away or I would be here every week. Great people and food. Very reasonable prices. Don't pass this up.

P.S. The fries were exceptional as well. Crispy but also fluffy. Perfectly done.

I've been going to Village Green since the early 80s. The staff, the food, the atmosphere - it's truly a gem. I consider it to be part of Middleton's history, and I love that this wacky green building is still standing proud. It's the most authentic business in the whole area, and it certainly has the most character. The burgers are legendary, and I really like their soup and sides. Try the nachos - they are not your "normal" nachos. The staff is extremely friendly, and they welcome you with open arms. If you're looking for a "dive" that is off the beaten path, this place is perfect for you. You'll even get a taste of Middleton's history with all of the old photos on the walls. For me, it's nostalgic and beautiful and I love it.

Village Green has been one of my favorite places to go to for many many years! Great food, great staff, good prices, especially these days, very casual, downtown Middleton… They don’t stay open real late though… I think maybe until 10 o’clock you can get things delivered or you can eat there or you can get it to take out… They are known for their cheeseburgers of course and I love the speedsters everything they have is good you can’t go wrong! And the owners actually show up and run the place if you know what I mean and it matters it makes a difference
