Staff was very kind, we had a bit of a longer wait for our table so decided to order some appetizers at the bar while we were waiting. Eric the tough guy working the bar decided to sarcastically thank my cousin for not applying gratuity - despite him not being the person providing any service to us beyond carrying the 6 ounce trays a few feet to the table. Thirsty Whale is in a great location right on the water, next to the Min-AquaBats ski show. They have outdoor seating on the ski show side with self-service drinks at the bar. Restaurant seating is on the other side, which feels a great view of the lake.
There's also plenty of room and some video games inside. You have to get there in plenty of time if you want reservations before the kitchen closes on show days.
The burgers were pretty big and the fried fish was good.

We went there on Saturday August 23 2025. It was 2:30 in the afternoon. We had been out on the lake all day and my family was in town and looking forward to going to The Thirsty Whale for lunch for the first time. We were very disappointed to see that the dining room closed for an hour and a half on a prime summer Saturday afternoon. I understand staff needs a break but I worked in the business all my life and they can rotate breaks or many times I never got one. Pay them more! You lost a lot of money that day. We were a party of 6 and we told a party of 15 that was pulling in on there pontoon and we saw many more turned away. We will not be back!!!!

We came to your restaurant on Saturday August 30th with 11 people at 4:20 and waited for our meals to arrive at 5:30. I don’t blame the server but I’m not sure what happened in the kitchen. In my mind this is very bad service . The meal turned out fine for some and really good for others, however the time really ruined it for us.

If you were the only table in the building and had to wait for a bit I would like to hear the complaint but on busy holiday Saturday and the tables were full I’m sure my kitchen staff did the best they could to get food done as fast as they could and don’t want to hear it. Tried this place for the first time on a Sunday in August, around 2pm. They were very busy and our wait was about 20 minutes before we were seated. The brief wait was worth it. These are such kind folks. We came in with our two kids after a long day and they had just stopped serving dinner. We were ready to turn around and head out, but they decided instead to make a little exception for us.

Thank goodness they did - and not just because we were hungry, but because it was delish. The fish sandwich was a huge slab of fish. Wings were my favorite - crispy with your choice of sauce. The salad was fresh, the ranch dressing must be homemade, everything was spot on. We will for sure be back.

Convenient location to dock the boat and grab a bite and a beer. The food and beers were ok and our server was great. As for the atmosphere; we first took a table to the left as you walk in the door. We quickly realized we were sitting in what appeared to be a kids arcade. So we got a table in the area outside of the bar. I'm not complaining, just informing; his place is full of families with kids which is all good, just not what I was expecting. It was so loud our table of 6 could barely hear each other. We had a very disappointing experience due to the poor treatment we received from the waitstaff. They behaved like spoiled children, refusing to give us a table to dine at, even though there were clearly empty tables available. I'd give a zero if possible. Myself husband and child got asked to leave before we ever got the chance to order our food. My husbands salad had a long black hair in it, so we sent it back as neither of us had an appetite after that. They said they wouldn’t charge us for his salad, but since he didn’t eat and I no longer wanted to eat mine I assumed they would not charge us for either. Not the case! The server who addressed our complaint said it wasn’t the server’s fault one salad was bad and therefore they would have to charge us for my salad. Also, we stated we had 7 plus a baby for our party but our table was so tiny we were extremely uncomfortable. We were sitting shoulder to shoulder and our food and drinks barely fit on the table. We had to stack things and move our caddy’s on the floor and remove our waters to fit our food. We were seated at a table more suitable for 4 people. When we asked if we could split our party into 2 tables they would not accommodate ( just noting that we were very polite and when they could not accommodate we remained polite patrons). If you wanna eat outside the tables can only comfortably fit 4, maybe 5 so if you have a larger party, book in 2 separate groups :(

Great burger and coconut shrimp. Drinks were delicious. Big pitchers of ice water on the tables were super appreciated. Our bill was super reasonable. Arrived on the Sunday of the 4th of July, after what was clearly a very busy afternoon. They had the kitchen closed for a half-hour staff break and we were put on a wait list. What an amazing concept for restaurant management to stop, regroup, give staff a break, and come back out fresh for dinner. We were immediately seated after the break, food came out super fast and cooked perfectly. Great job. Awesome view. Great staff.

Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to try the food due to the unwelcoming and hostile behavior of the bartender. We initially asked if it was possible to order food to go—a common option at many restaurants. While we understand that not all establishments offer takeout, the bartender responded abruptly and dismissively.

We then considered ordering food and standing at one of the bar tables, as there were no visible signs indicating this was not allowed. Before we could proceed, the bartender again cut us off and stated—rather harshly—that this was not an option and that we needed to "make up our minds" about how and where we planned to eat.

We had intended to be seated through the hostess, who was very kind and welcoming. However, before we could do so, members of our group overheard the bartender openly complaining about us to coworkers and other guests at the bar. This made us uncomfortable enough to decide to leave the restaurant.

Regrettably, due to the unprofessional and disrespectful conduct we experienced, we do not plan on returning.

This restaurant not only has amazing quality food, but the views if you sit outside are unbeatable! You can sit on a dock on lake Minocqua and also get service to your table. If you pick the correct date during the summer, sometimes you can watch the Minocqua bats (a waterskiing team) practice or perform on the lake. The food is great, and the service is amazing as well. It can get pretty busy doing the lunch hour in the summer though, so you may want to go early or later.

By FAR the WORST place we have ever been to. Came in with a group of 14- willing to split up into three separate groups. 2 of 3 groups were sat. The last group of 5 waited over an hour to be sat after the others, even though we all got on the list at the same time. This next part BLOWS MY MIND- The “manager” then proceeds to go to one of our groups tables and starts yelling at them for us apparently being disrespectful to them and when the group asks for to-go containers and stating they would leave because of how she was acting, she denies them containers and picks up all their food (where a 3 years old and 5 year old were eating) and throws it in the trash. THEN the “manager” proceeds to go over to our other groups table and starts yelling at them too about the same thing, until they decided to get up and leave as well- even though the other groups had NOTHING to do with the situation, we just simply weren’t waiting any longer to be sat and decided to go somewhere else. TOXIC TOXIC TOXIC. Would never return to this place nor ever recommend this place to a single soul. All because they apparently don’t know how to run a restaurant and seat people in the order that they arrive at the restaurant. The worst place we have ever been to. We came in with a group of 14 for inside and told him we wanted to split it up and sit outside instead. The fries were overcooked to the point that some of them were inedible. The walleye fillet on my sandwich was also overcooked. Everything was just mediocre. Definitely not worth the wait.

Our server brought us two small pitchers of water for six of us. When we needed more, we had to walk to the water station and refill them, but there was no ice. The water from the water station was warm.

I don't like the 3% automatic extra charge for using a credit card. It's just a money grab, and it isn't justified for a place that does that much business.

We won't bother stopping here again.

When we approached staff to explain what we were experiencing, we were told we were exaggerating and that there staff wouldn’t be goofing around but my party of 5 all saw them, additionally another server was hanging around her boyfriend who was a customer and he was inappropriately touching her. When our food came out a couple of our dishes were cold. The manager did a very poor job of handling someone confronting her about poor service and became mean and belligerent.

Also any sauce you want to go with your dish is an additional charge and there’s a 20 dollar minimum for cards at the bar.

Was told I'd have a 40 minute wait for a table ended up waiting an hour and twenty minutes, finally got seated and then waited another hour for the food to come out cold. When I spoke to a "manager" she argued with me about my bad service and cold food, told me I was wrong, said the customer isn't right, and was very disrespectful. The owner refused to talk to us in her place. DO NOT GO HERE. You will not be treated or prioritized as a guest, and you will be disrespected. Worst service I have ever received, very disappointing.

We walked in and were seated in about 5 minutes. We waited 25 minutes for a staff member to even come to our table. They walked past us like we were invisible. So we left. I was excited to eat here. . Now I will never go back.

We’ve gone here for years. Not anymore. No split checks? 3% charge to use a credit card? Oh, and we were chatting for a few minutes after we paid and then the server came over and asked to to leave so they could have the table…we were there a total of 60 min. Not going back.

View of the lake, great!! Food not so much. 13$ for nachos with the same quality as a high school event concession stand. Buffalo chicken sandwich was 1/2 the size of the bun and the veggies overpowered it. The chips were store bought kettle cooked. Also ordered a double mixed drink and got a 12oz plastic cup?? I’m not from around here. Really makes me miss southern Wisconsin.

I got the smoked fish dip and the Wisconsin Fish Fry. The fish was juicy, but the batter was a little soggy. The cornbread was moist, the fries were crispy, and the coleslaw was creamy. My only complaints were that they wouldn't split checks and all of their dishware was disposable (absolutely not a deal breaker, the food was great either way)
