We had eaten at Tilly's twice before - in July of 2024 and November 2024, and loved it. We were so happy to find such a great sandwich/coffee place near our Rhinelander home. Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience at Tilly's during our recent visit August 2025. When we walked in, there were multiple tables that were dirty and had not been bussed or cleaned. Even the outdoor tables were dirty, with used dishes on them. Inside, we went to the order station and waited several minutes before being acknowledged. There were two young women working in the front area, both looked at us, yet it took several minutes for one to come over and take our order. We arrived well before closing time (12:30 arrival and they closed at 2pm) so the fact that the restaurant looked the way it did, and the amount of time we waited to be acknowledged was disappointing. There were no clean booths. The booth we sat at had crumbs all over it. A booth was taken by the two young women who were working, to be their prep station for utensils, etc. That was the only clean booth/table available. The food was OK. Portion sizes significantly smaller than when we previously went and significantly lacking in flavor compared to our previous visits. There was a bug crawling on the lettuce of my husband's salad, which came with the Kris burger he ordered. The behavior of the two young women was odd. They chatted with each other behind the counter the entire time we were there. They did not attend to much of anything, nor did they greet anyone. I am so disappointed by this experience. We contributed to Tilly's during a recent raffle event at the Rhinelander YMCA, yet I cannot say we will go back to Tilly's to dine.

This is a tough review 🫤
✅The food is truly outstanding- like hands down some of my fav scones and breakfast sandwiches in town
✅The coffee is smooth and wonderful, some of the best I’ve ever had!!

But the service, is slow…so slow - one Tuesday morning it took 38min for 1 -16oz latte …now was the coffee worth it 🤷‍♀️ yea kinda…but this is definatly not the place to go if your in ANY kind of time crunch.

This is our favorite breakfast spot when we visit Rhinelander. They have the best pancakes. So fluffy and buttery. The biscuits are perfect. The "from scratch" really shines through in the quality of the food.

Tilly’s in Rhinelander — Fantastic Food, Understaffed for the Experience They’re Selling
I walked into Tilly’s genuinely excited. The menu was full of locally sourced, brunch-forward dishes that felt both thoughtful and indulgent. Exactly the kind of hip breakfast spot I gravitate toward. The place was packed, buzzing with energy, and we were told it’d be about a 45-minute wait. Fair enough.

When the food came, it looked incredible. Corn and buckwheat pancakes, chia pudding, a beautifully made omelet. But there were no utensils on the table, none delivered with the food, and none at the self-serve station either. We literally sat there staring at our food until someone brought us a set. From there, a few more issues popped up. One of my wife’s eggs ended up on my plate, my café au lait was missing the milk, and my potatoes never arrived.

That’s when it hit me. This isn’t just a café. This is à la carte brunch at premium prices, but the setup doesn’t match the ambition. There were no table numbers. No food runner. No real service flow. Plates were being run by whoever was available in the moment, with staff clearly rotating roles on the fly to keep things moving.

From what I could tell, there were just four people working. One barista, one cashier, one person cooking, and one person bussing. No expediter. No front-of-house lead. No bussing station. The team was clearly dedicated and doing their best, but they were visibly stretched, and the structure just wasn’t there to support the level of service that the prices suggest.

With this level of volume and demand, it’s clear the current setup is running as lean as possible. But at a certain point, staffing a premium food operation with a skeleton crew starts to hamper the overall customer experience.

With around 35 to 40 people seated and room for at least 50, most brunch spots would have at least double the staff and a system in place to coordinate it all. Tilly’s feels caught between being a hip café and a true brunch destination, and it hasn’t been fully staffed or streamlined to succeed as either one.

Still, the food was fantastic. The staff was warm and trying hard. If they can build a system to match their ambition, they’ve got something special on their hands. The heart and flavor are already there. Now they just need the support to carry it.

First time here. When I arrived 3 of the 4 booths had dishes left. They hadn't been cleared and I was the only one in line. I asked, " Do I sit and someone comes to the table?" She said, " you can sit and when you know your order come up." I really didn't know where to sit. Due to the dirty tables, one person still at a bench eating, people in the back and people up front. I found a small table by the counter area. Then when paying my order wrong up about $3 more than menu/ blue board prices. I questioned and was told prices haven't been updated. I ordered avocado toast with an egg and a Macchiato. Should have been $7.50, plus $2, plus $3...my bill was over $15...my drink was excellent, my toast was tasty. You would have gotten 5 stars if your prices matched what you had posted and tables were cleared in a timely fashion to welcome your next guests.

Tilly’s is one of two restaurants in Rhinelander (along with Brown Street 151) that attempt to serve on a James Beard-level. While they don’t always succeed, they are working on a different level than the other fine restaurants in town, such as Holiday Acres (Three Coins), The Pub, South 17 (now Wally’s South 17), the lamented Al-Gen … . These supper clubs / restaurants also deserve 5 stars, but based on different criteria; such as, is my medium rare steak medium rare? Yes? 5 stars. Did my Brandy Manhattan come with cherries? Yes? 5 stars. Is my iceberg lettuce salad saturated in creamy dressing? Yes? 5 stars!!!

By comparison, Tilly’s succeeds where the others don’t try to go: “PORTABELLA: Tomato-marinated and grilled portabella with spinach and mozzarella, served open-faced on organic Madison Sourdough seed and grain toast.” Thoroughly delicious!

Please don’t get me wrong: there’s nothing wrong with Fish Fry — love it (especially Perch). But if you’re looking for a different level, Tilly’s is where you want to go.

BTW, my review qualifications include being a secret shopper for Lettuce Entertainment and -- more importantly -- I married a cheesehead. A Hodag no less. For 44 years I’ve been going to the same very good supper clubs and restaurants. I appreciate them. But now I have a couple fine dining options.

Coffee was awesome, food was okay, service was horrible. Sadly, I have had better service at Mc Donald's!
1st and last time there!
Walked in and the person at the register didn't even look up, had to ask if we sat ourselves, she replied as if we were bothering her and should've have known. Again, 1st time there.
They, not just 1, acted as if we were bothering them. Table was not clean, when asked for a towel to clean it, she acted as if she was doing us a favor and only did half leaving the crumbs on the other side ,seriously !
Suggestion to the owner:
That business is hard to be profitable and customer service is #1, in addition you have several restaurants around you that are competing! Don't assume just because you think you're catering to " organic " that you'll be successful!
Good service in addition to great food will make you successful, good luck!

★ 1

Even more disappointing, after reaching out to the owner as they asked in their comment nothing happened. Nothing at all..

A few weeks ago I tried Tilly's. It wasn't super busy and it was clean. The place is cute. I ordered a burger and I cannot believe how salty it was. I had to put all the "salad" lettuce on the burger to be able to eat it (thankfully I asked for it plain so I didn't get whatever dressing they use). I would have asked for a new burger but I did not have time and was super hungry when I arrived in the first place. I do not know if it was the sauce on the burger, the cheese they use or the seasoning on the burger itself. I don't know how anyone goes back for the burger with that much salt on it. It was super disappointing. I do not recommend.
The salad is sad at best, it could at minimum be bigger with a hearty dressing, or you know... include a smidge of anything other than just lettuce.

Update:
Tilly’s continues to be a great place. Emphasizing locally produced ingredients, their food is attractive, creative and delicious. Coffee is very good!
___________
Greeted by an attractive, but unassuming doorway, Tilly's is a smartly uncluttered café and coffee shop. Newly opened when we visited, the menu was limited, but everything we tried was delicious and attractively served in generous portions. Their lemon scone and Autumn Squash soup, especially, were wonderful! The scone had classic balances of proper crust on outside and delicate biscuit texture throughout. Not dry and not-too sweet, it makes a wonderful accompaniment to the espresso or tea drink of your choice. Their squash soup was creamy with deep flavors, and a wonderful balance between fall spices and savory heartiness. As we visit Rhinelander several times a year to spend time at our cabin, I have the highest hopes to find Tilley's becoming a staple venue in the downtown Rhinelander community. Lunch at Tilley's could certainly become habit-forming.

My wife and I had the good fortune of finding Tilly's for an early Sunday coffee and breakfast. They opened early, before seven, which was perfect for our schedule. The place was surprisingly hip, with a positive vibe and a clean, functional layout.

They easily accommodated my gluten-free needs, which is crucial for me as I have celiac disease. The chef even came and discussed my dietary requirements with me twice to ensure everything was safe. This level of care and attention made me feel very comfortable.

We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who couldn’t have been more pleasant. I was surprised to see her so early on a Sunday morning, personally ensuring everything was running smoothly. The coffee was delicious, and the breakfast options were excellent.

Highly recommend Tilly's for anyone looking for a great start to their day!

We went here being that we were there several times before and it was wonderful. A few weeks ago we stopped there with another couple that we bragged to about the place. All four of us ordered and went outside to wait for the food. When it came my wife didn't get anything. The waitress went back in but never came back out with her food. My wife went in and they told her the ham she ordered was frozen!! They didn't come out to tell her. Why would they freeze the ham if the place is open??

Update: 9/2/23. Finally convinced my husband to eat breakfast with me here. He ordered the breakfast sandwich and a scone. He liked it and he liked that portions were smaller. He however brought his own coffee. lol. Diehard Maxwell House fan.

I was able to try the raspberry scone. My favorite so far. It would be nice to have the schedule for the scone flavor rotation, but you can pretty much count on the blueberry lemon scone.

Update: 8/30/23. I sto here from time to time for a scone and a latte. I have not found another latte I like except for here. I ordered the breakfast platter and the food was hot. Burned my fingertips on the bacon..as with most specialty places, the prices are higher, but they offer organic and vegetarian options which always cost more.😂 Bathroom wasn't as clean as I have seen in the past, but not horrible. There was a screeching child who felt the need to screech every 15 seconds so it was not as relaxing as it normally is. music wasn't to loud or annoying. Still a solid 5 stars

So, I saw a Facebook post advertising their lemon blueberry scones. I am not a coffee drinker and really don't care for scones, but the picture looked delicious. I ordered one. It had just been freshly made and it melted in my mouth. I immediately wanted another, but decided against it since it was not a buffet. I ordered a Carmel latte which came in a nice size cup. It did not have a strong coffee taste- just perfect for me. The next day, I introduced this yummy goodness to 3 more people and told a friend. They also wanted another one. On this second trip my husband and I had breakfast, it was all very good. Our only complaint was the food wasn't very warm. Oh, yeah my husband likes stronger coffee 🤣 Look forward to eating some more of those scones in the future.😋

Tilly's makes me so happy! I feel so cared for here! The staff is super sweet and the atmosphere is cozy. They make everything 100% as healthy a possible. NO junk. They even go as far as to make all their coffee syrups from scratch! I came here yesterday and told them I have an intolerance to fructose, which includes honey. Today after my husband and I ordered breakfast, the kitchen staff remembered me and took the time to come out and make sure I didn't order something I couldn't eat! We tried 2 other coffee shops in town and they were honestly terrible. Don't go anywhere else. PS Tilly's scones are spot on in flavor and texture. Simply the best!

Good coffee, nice breakfast selection. Not many lunch offerings and they are just okay. Good for breakfast.

Waited 40 plus minutes for food. Not a smile to be found on any of the staff. Unfriendly and unresponsive. Food was OK.

The only thing that was good was the food. It took 40 minutes to get our food. No check back, no smiles, no apologies. Do not tip in advance. A tip is rating the service. If I could ask for refund of my tip I would have.

Shop was completely closed and locked up 30 min before listed closing (at 2:30 on Saturday 7/9/22). Really was looking forward to checking this place out :( No notice or reasoning was to be found.

Huge ZERO! I ordered the omlette that supposedly had 3 types of cheeses and was accompanied by a green side salad.
After waiting patiently for 45 minutes for our order it arrived…barely any cheese, 6 tiny bits of tomato and for the “side salad” it was just lettuce greens! The omelette was not even hot.my friend ordered the pancakes and received 3 a little larger than silver dollar ones with a pad of butter. She asked for more butter and the gave her one other square!
We weren’t the only ones upset about the service ( it wasn’t real busy) There were 4 ladies nearby that rolled their eyes when we were leaving. We wished them luck getting their food and they were upset too.
I’m usually not a complainer because I have worked as a server, but we’ll never go back to Tilly’s… poor food, price was ridiculous
( not even a slice of bread with the omelette)
In response to owner’s reply below:
We DID ask to speak with you(owner) but the young lady said you were busy cooking in the kitchen! Sadly, no one bothered to get you!
And I kindly decline ( but appreciate)your generous offer for the gift certificate. I support small business and am happy to give second chances but my advice is to concentrate on quality of food and service.

Came here for brunch with friends and loved it. The orange cardamom latte is a must- I had it with oat milk. My friend had a cortado (pictured below) which was also delish. The usual cook was out but the food still came out perfect. Super cute atmosphere too! <3

Really great food and cute coffee shop. Plates of food were a bit smaller than I imagined. Also, the bathroom was suuuper dirty, full trach, sink with scum in it and un-mopped floor.

If you are into man buns and hippies then this is the place for you. A menu that has limited items and overpriced coffee. Total yuppy hangout with overpriced food. Nothing special. If you are looking for a good filling breakfast go elsewhere.

Definitely my favorite place in the Northwoods. The ambiance is really open, bright and welcoming. A great place for a breakfast or lunch hangout or to have coffee while doing work. The food is incredible (shout-out to the Chef Kris’ burger) and the ingredients always taste so healthy and fresh. Their different soups are to-die-for. I so appreciate that they offer so many gluten-free options. Their almond milk vanilla lattes are also bomb, and so are all of their coffee drinks. I love this place! But if you know me at all, you know this already 😅

I just went and got a bunch of eggs, potatoes, pancakes, etc...

They're just right down the street like right in the middle of town. What I ordered was done pretty much before I even left to go pick it up.

I dint drink coffee.. so I can't really say how well done that is, and I think that's like their main thing.. But the food was A+.

You ever see those pictures that restaurants show with like, perfectly procured food that's like glistening and perfectly shaped and all that? Yeah, that's what my meal looked like. Absolutely perfect.

She even asked if I needed silverware or anything. The girl that took my order was awesome, polite, had everything covered.

It was delicious and they come in these little disposable containers. They got all the bases covered.

The only thing I didn't love was the bread... But thats not because it was bad. It just wasn't my favorite type of bread. I'm just not a fan of sourdough. But it's not enough to lower this place from 5 to 4 stars.

Welcoming and quaint coffee shop with amazing service and delicious breakfast and coffee. They offer a really nice variety for breakfast. We had biscuits and gravy and a spinach and cheese omelet with greens and both were amazing! Exceptionally friendly service with my rambunctious 1 year old. Thank you for a great breakfast experience!

Wife decided on let’s do a coffee date, stumbled upon this in downtown Rhinelander. We live here and with our busy lives and sleep schedule, we did not realize Tilly’s was here. Walked in and you get instant big city coffee shop vibes. Staff was extremely friendly, very timely in response (especially amount of traffic coming in and out), and helpful. Pricing seemed higher but made up in quality. My wife got a cold brew and I got an americano, for food we both ordered from their specials. The special I ordered was the BLT, normally I struggle ordering BLTs from restaurants because of price and simplicity of the sandwich, but $11 was worth it! Their ingredients are geared toward organic and additive free, so my sandwich had perfectly crisp nitrate free bacon, red juicy flavorful tomato, nice mix of greens, all on a multi-grain toast with a salad on the side topped with a nice (I presume) vinaigrette that was not overpowering.
It was the perfect spot for our impromptu morning date and has set the tone for our day to be great!!!

A must go to gem in the heart of the picturesque downtown Rhinelander. It’s stylish with delicious modern fare yet with the hometown feel of small town Wisconsin. The customer service is extraordinary and made our time here even more memorable. Food was delicious and they have a a great selection of products from the best scented candles to delicious tea/coffee. If traveling through for food or just looking for a quality chill place to relax with coffee this is the spot!
