My partner and I went for my birthday. I had the 28oz ribeye (medium) with hash browns and a Caesar salad; he had similar but the French onion soup instead of a salad. He did the happy dance during his first slurps of the soup. I would probably order a different salad next time since it wasn't my favorite, but it's still good. Meat was cooked to order, and the juice where it merges with the hash browns is droolworthy. I could see the salt crystals on top of my partner's steak, so well seasoned. For dessert we had a Swiss cake roll, and they brought out a key lime tart for my birthday. The tart was light and refreshing, and the Swiss cake roll is what Lil' Debbie's should taste like, to be honest. Service was attentive.

Loved my experience here as a solo diner. Sat at the bar, had great cocktails and some delicious food. The French onion soup is not to be missed and the duck was sublime. Great conversation with fellow diners. Looking forward to returning!

These are photos from my most recent visit because Lord knows I have way too many food pictures from this place. It’s always a hit the food is absolutely insane, the service is impeccable, and the atmosphere is chill and friendly. Yes, you’ll spend some money here, but I can’t think of a better place to do it. Best steak I’ve ever had, and I’ve been saying that for years!

We had hoped this would be a highlight meal of our trip to Madison, but unfortunately, it was very disappointing. Both steaks were overcooked and lacked flavor. I ordered medium-rare, but my steak was closer to medium-well, with one side noticeably charred. The meat was also not very tender. The sides were served cold and were also underseasoned.
After trying a few bites, I stopped eating, and my boyfriend also found his meal unsatisfactory. We returned both plates, which is the only time we have ever done so. We decided not to order replacements, as we didn’t feel the kitchen could meet our expectations. This was, regrettably, one of the worst steaks I’ve had, and we left so disappointed that we skipped dinner that evening and just returned to our hotel and ate left over hot and spicy cheese bread from Stella's.

I fell in love with this place! The atmosphere is unmatched, the coolest wood and vintage atmosphere. The food was so amazing, the walleye was maybe the best fish I have ever had! The service was great as well, shoutout Andrew at the bar! Not to mention such an elevated restaurant at an affordable price.

We absolutely love the Tornado Room and have been going there for years. We celebrated our anniversary there last month and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, we had our first poor experience last evening as we celebrated my birthday with another couple. The waitstaff were great, yet obviously too busy. My ceaser salad was small, wet and the lettuce laid flat on the plate with three croutons, no apparent dressing. My fav hash browns were cold and the filet I love was rare not medium rare. We boxed half of our food so we could eat it cooked well and warm the next day. We had to ask for boxes and have never had to box our own food there before. The noise level was high, highest I have ever experienced in any restaurant so we couldn’t really chat. It was a disappointing experience - the highlight, though, was a piece of delicious key lime pie served with a lit candle - that was unexpected and yummy :)

I feel like there’s a before and after I had Tornado’s bacon blue cheeseburger - it is the very best burger I ever had, by a mile. I need to try so much more of the late night menu, because I love coming in after 10 on a weeknight for the fun crowd, candle-lit atmosphere and awesome servers… but I just can’t stop myself with that burger, I’m fantasizing about it right now

I've eaten at this iconic supper club before and had a great experience. This time my 5 siblings and I were in town to enjoy a weekend together and finally scatter my parent's ashes. We were in high spirits and enjoying the excellent cocktails and the attentive service when Marge the Hostess came over and shushed us. We were seated in the smaller room and it was noisy and lively in there. Having a 6 person conversation would create some noise- but we certainly weren't untoward. It definitely popped our joyous mood. This is a Wisconsin Supper Club after all - not a "Fine Dining" French Restaurant (even though we spent over $600). The evening was ruined and unfortunately the weekend tarnished. I reached out to the management but crickets. I guess the restaurant is so busy now they can afford to be rude to its customers. Not sure how long they can rest ontheir reputation though before people start dining elsewhere.
Lots of great restaurants in Madison so maybe spend your $600 elsewhere if you want to enjoy your evening talking with your dining companions.

Classy ambience and excellent service. Space is right and lighting is low - something to keep in mind depending on what you're looking for. I was pleased with the menu, but all of my food was over seasoned, especially the steak, and I'm a person who loves seasoning. 8/10 would recommend

I had heard good things about this restaurant. The drinks were good and the bread was warm and flavorful. Two of us ordered filet au poivre, medium rare, my favorite. The brussel sprouts were tasty, and the mushroom sauce paired well with the filet. but only one filet was cooked properly. The other was completely raw, but it was so dark that it was hard to see until I had eaten about half. Since I had eaten that much, I wasn't going to send it back. Being known as a steakhouse, it was more bothersome that there was inconsistentency between how the two filets were cooked rather than one being underdone. It was just a big letdown to have what they are known for be the only disappointment in the meal

Our first visit as Madison residents did not disappoint! Stellar food and service -- parking is the only hang-up, and familiarity with the neighborhood might alleviate some of this problem. We did not have reservations on this weekday evening but a table was found and this could have been luck or could be what is routine here, hard to say. It's not always easy to commit to a set day or time, so it can be tricky to get a seat at a popular, well-known downtown venue like this. Plenty of food for the money, which is good since this is not a bargain-priced restaurant. But you won't go away hungry. Cocktail menu is exceptional and our steaks were perfect. I want to venture into the seafood choices next time, and next time won't take as long as this first trip did. This is a true gem among Madison's downtown, historic eateries.

The good was excellent but took over an hour to after ordering. The waitress was horrible, didn't check in with us and when we asked about our food, she said it takes 45 to 60 minutes, which was never communicated. We were seated at a table in the bar area and it was quite loud.

I post positive but realistic reviews when places deserve them. This time the review will be less positive. First time going to Tornado Steak House in Madison WI. The establishment lives up to its name. This restaurant has all the ambiance of a tornado. Dark, chaotic, and loud as a freight train. The multiple small rooms have terrible acoustics. Add in the typical loud Madison restaurant goer and expect a sonic experience. A McDonalds full of middle-school kids on a Friday night would be equivalent to the atmosphere at 5:30 on a Thursday night at the Tornado Steak House. The servers were a positive aspect of the evening. Attentive without being intrusive. They came across as pros... for the most part (more on service later). The bread plate was great. We all enjoyed the selection of warm breads and good butter. The salads were good. I went with the wedge salad and really enjoyed it. Then there was a pause in service. Not sure why. Our salad table was cleared and we assumed our main course would arrive shortly. There was a very noticeable wait between the salad course and the main meal. I ordered an 8 oz medium rare filet and hashbrowns. What I received was one of the worst steaks I have had in some time. The outside had a mealy texture and was tough. The steak was well done and not good. The hashbrowns were very dark brown, and dried out. My guess is during the long delay between the salad and main course, our food was left under warmers and became over cooked. Why there was a delay was not explained. The bill was ~$75 a person. I am a boomer and have an old fashion idea that anytime meals cost that much per person, the food, service and atmosphere should be at a higher standard than what we experienced at the Tornado Steak House. If you are expecting a quiet relaxing atmosphere and good food, I would skip this place.

This place needs to go to Milwaukee Steakhouse to see how steaks are properly cooked. Had the big filet and it was hammered overcooked. Asked for it to be cooked medium rare. The replacement was even more done. The beer was cold at least.

Tornado is easily our favorite steakhouse in Madison. We frequently come here for birthdays and anniversaries. The food is excellent, the vibe is great (especially if you're sitting in the bar area), and the service is the cherry on top.
Collin has taken care of us several times and we always enjoy his service, company, and humor. He will not let you walk out the door without memorizing the instructions on how to **correctly** re-heat your (delicious) pineapple upside-down cake!
I recommend everyone tries Tornado!

Finally made it here after 42 years. I knew of this place but don't know why I never ate here. Maybe it is because of the prices. It is a $$$ restaurant so I have to wait to till I can afford it. Anyway, it is a good value place because the portions are huge!!! The escargot appetizer was small-ish compared to the rest. The last time I had escargots was in France and I wasn't thrilled but this.... It renewed my appreciation for escargots again.
The scallop appetizer was rich with the cream sauce and mashed potatoes but it was very yummy. We had 4 different dishes. Each comes with salad or soup and 1 side. 3 of us had salad and 1 had the soup du jour - cream of mushroom. The soup was very salty. Had to take that to go and add more water later. As for the salad, I thought we all have the same salad just different dressing but I was surprised. The Cesar salad had an anchovy on it! The wedge salad definitely had a high wedge. Right about now we were already getting full. Did I mention the fresh bread assortment and thick pads of butter? They were so good. One of us ate it like it was cheese, out a big slap of it on a slice of bread to eat it.
For main meals, we had the rack of lamb, 14 oz filet, 28oz ribeye with bones, and duck breast. It was a full rack of lamb chops so nicely done. The sauce is tangy and sweet and went well with the asparagus. The duck breast was also good and was paired with the green beans. Both steaks (it is a steak house all) were beautifully grilled. I love the charred parts around the bone. So delicious.
One down side to this place is the noise. I can hardly hear my what my companion is saying. So take note of that. Come to tornado steak house to eat and not talk and you will be fine. The room is pretty dim too so these photos had to be edited to show the white table top (paper) and plates.
Server was very nice and patient with us. It was hard to decide what to order. It was a busy night though.

3.5 but have to round down based on the price. It's like Ruth Chris, but worse. Worse parking, slightly worse drinks, slightly worse salad, slightly worse entrees, slightly worse desserts, slightly worse appetizers... only thing that was barely better was hash browns.
So it's still very good, and better than the average restaurant. But for this high price point, I could go to Ruth Chris and have better meal next to an actual parking lot.
Oh and it's very cramped and dingy in Tornado Room with sticky floors and chintzy decor. Very loud and hard to hear due to room layout. Probably won't ever go back as long as there are better options available.

Tornado has always been my favorite steakhouse in Madison, but was very disappointed in our experience this weekend. The bread, relish cup and soup/salad were excellent and then it went downhill. Steak and sides came out cold, and the fix was to reheat the food so it was overcooked and dry when it came back. The Brussels sprouts tasted like pure garlic so were inedible. Shared our feedback with the server and the response was to offer a dessert and hope that it would be a better experience the next time. Not at all the service or quality of food that I’ve come to expect here.

This one was packed on a Monday night, so I guess it has a very high credit among everyone. But I can’t tell I really like the steak I got a fillet and it was dry. The food and atmosphere were fantastic. Probably the best in Madison. I did find it ridiculous that I spent $400 for two adults and two teenagers and they didn’t have free refills on the teenagers’ sodas. The waitress made it clear up front that there were no refills on fountain drinks. 🤦 I guess they make a lot of money on the soda. We had a great dinner at this place. We sat at the bar so we have no clue what the inside of the restaurant looks like. The bar is old and charming, great place to have a drink and a snack. I don't recommend to have dinner at the bar is not comfortable. But again we had no reservation so we made it work. We had the two NA cocktails both were good but a bit to sour for us. We got the escargot to start and they were good came with a stick of bread. The bread was not good at all. Btw we saw a couple ordering slices of white bread and ketchup for their steak. Made us wonder if that is how the locals eat. Anyway, we had the onion soup which was amazing. And we had the rack of lamb which was ok not sure the breadcrumbs on top were needed but in our opinion would have been better without it. It was a good shared meal since portions are large.

Classic Atmosphere, Great Service, and Delicious Steak
Walking into Tornado Steak House feels like stepping back in time in the best way. The low ceilings and timeless decor give it a cozy, vintage charm. The bar was active and inviting, with two sharp-dressed bartenders working smoothly and smiling the whole time. They seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves, which set a great tone—so we decided to join the fun and have dinner at the bar.
The atmosphere was relaxed, tidy, and welcoming. I ordered a steak and really enjoyed it—cooked just right and full of flavor. But the standout surprise was the bread—it was excellent. Honestly, I’d go back just for more of that.
A great spot with character, solid food, and a staff that makes you feel right at home.

Intriguing spot with an awesome aesthetic!
That said, our server was over tasked and subsequently unfriendly. Our room was prohibitively loud and uncomfortably crowded. The support staff were impressively attentive but our entrees were dropped after more than an hour wait.
The venison was tender but bitterly over-seasoned and (ironically) served with tasteless, unseasoned steak fries with the option of only ketchup or mayo by request. Moreover, one mid-rare fillet was undercooked to the point of being cold at the center. Though another fillet and the walleye were both excellent and the french onion soup absolutely exceeded expectations.
I’m sure this place is exceptional under other circumstances but the only notable aspect of our experience tonight was the bill.

We went for the later night specials. It was great to have a place to be able to get a meal. It was really crowded and we got the last table. Also, the steaks were tough and had quite a bit of gristle. Because they were so crowded, there were people on top of people and the poor servers were working their butts off to try to keep up. We had to go and find somebody to help us several times. Because they were just too busy.

Despite my partner's previous positive experiences at this establishment, our recent visit was disappointing. We experienced a 15-minute delay beyond our reservation time(8:00 pm), followed by an over hour-long wait for our food (9:45 pm), which we ultimately had to take to go. The staff provided minimal attention or communication throughout our visit, and when we voiced our concerns, management offered minimal acknowledgment, no apology, and was rude. Based on this experience, I would not return here.

Stopped by a steakhouse while traveling for work and it was packed, which is usually a good sign. I didn’t feel like waiting, so I grabbed a seat at the bar to get my food quicker. Ordered the filet with peppercorn sauce, asparagus, and a baked potato — and wow, the steak was amazing. Super tender, cooked just right, and the peppercorn sauce gave it that perfect kick. I’ve been here 4 times now. Tonight was my birthday. Unfortunately, it was over an hour for food on a Monday night. My flank steak and asparagus were flavorless and undercooked. However, Tony - the amazing bartender compensated us well. I will always love this place and its service!

Great atmosphere. Attentive service. Ny strip was obviously not prime cut. It would be better if they offered smaller portions of better cuts. Nice experience but you can probably make a better steak at home.

If walk in front door bar to tables narrow to get by. Have to walk to back for hostess stand. Way too narrow between tables n boothes for someone to get around anyone. Narrow for 2 servers to pass there their server stations.

Now this is what I signed up for when I asked to have a steak in Wisconsin. Went here for my birthday and had the bone in ribeye, wedge salad, and hash browns. The steak was cooked perfectly, it was tender, and I got it au poivre to cut through the fattiness. Overall delicious and satiating, I didn’t eat all day.
The real star was the pineapple upside down cake. My friend put it best, “I was stuffed, but somehow that cake made me more hungry” that’s how good this cake is. I thought the waiter was trying to upset us but really he just had our best interests in mind!! Postcard is a very nice touch!

Waited an hour an a half for our food, wait staff was not particularly attentive, they were sold out of most things we wanted, and then our "medium" burger was the most overdone, dry excuse for a burger I've ever experienced

Classic steak and martini bar where the cuts are thick , cooked just right and the drinks are stiff. Do yourself a favor and go straight to the NY strip or a filet. The spinach side salad rocks!

The Tornado Steak House cooked the best steak I have ever had in my entire life! I am a steak guy for sure but I’m not willing to pay an arm and a leg for the better steaks out there. So, I ordered the biggest and cheapest steak I could which was the 16 oz. Sirloin and it was just amazing! I can’t imagine what the best cuts of steak taste like here. My steak was cooked just right being perfectly tender and juicy. Everything else I had was great as well but it was all about the steak here. I will say I ate here twice while on my trip and each time it took a good while between ordering my food and getting it. No joke it took about a hour each time. Thank you to Tornado Steak House for serving me the best steak I have ever had.

I decided to check this local steakhouse out for a work trip. Nice atmosphere and vibe for Madison but the wait was so long. The host literally forgot about us but no worry there. Got some juicy steak but flavor can be better and kind plain dish without too much sauce options.
Overall, I like the food but service can be better considering this is pricey for a steak. And bread can be much better too

As a tourist in town I had never heard of Tornado before being invited by local colleagues to dinner.
And I can say I’ve not been to a restaurant like this, from the outside it looks like a bar, inside it’s also very dark and cramped, but then it is absolutely packed. And the main reason is that the food is impeccable! The portions are huge, the drinks great and the atmosphere real fun and relaxed.
I had the bisque soup and an 8oz sirloin with asparagus, which was probably the smallest steak I could find. Both dishes were amazing, and I had a lovely malbec to wash it down. I highly recommend Tornado if you’re in town, like steak and fun atmosphere.

I visited this restaurant for a private company event for the first time on a Saturday night. The stuffed mushrooms and appetizers were incredible. The bread was delicious and flavorful. The clam chowder was rich and hearty. The baked potato was cooked to perfection. The New York strip was one of the best I've ever had. Crispy seared outside and medium rare inside with sufficient seasoning to make every bite delicious but not overwhelming. The cheese cake was creamy and phenomenal with the very fresh raspberries and blackberries accompanying the dessert. Highly recommend.

We were so excited for our first visit to Tornado Steak House on 2/20/25. The evening started and ended amazingly well, because of our wonderful server, whose name wish I could remember. She was kind, happy, attentive, knowledgeable, and just plain fun. As an appetizer, we ordered the Coquille Saint Jacques. It was divine. But then things went south. I ordered the 28 oz. Ribeye on the Bone. It was served sizzling hot, cooked to a perfect medium-rare, as I had ordered. But it was not tender, not even just chewy, but tough. Nothing at all like the tender, flavorful cut of beef with a rich marbling of fat which is a ribeye. I was embarrassed for the Tornado Steak House for having charged us $72 for such an inferior piece of beef.

Our work booked a room for our group of 18 and it was such a fun experience. The rooms are darker but lit appropriately with candles and soft lighting surrounding the walls. Our servers were very conscientious, always trying to cater to any request or desire. The food was remarkable. Between the rack of lamb or the 16oz New York steak, it was all made to perfection. They brought out bread starter baskets with four different types. All seemingly made fresh and warm. The cocktails were made with elegance and a touch of fun to keep things professional but also fun. Will be returning here as soon as possible for a lovely date night. Get a reservation soon!

I can’t believe I wasted my hard-earned cash here. They got my order wrong. The filet steak I ordered (Medium-well)was burnt to a crisp on the outside with zero pink in the middle, like they threw it on the grill and forgot about it. It was like a crime against food. Seriously, I’ve had better steaks from chains like Long Horn and Ruth's Chris. Gordon Ramsay would’ve had a meltdown: “What is this? A charred piece of leather?!” To top it off, they completely messed up my order! I wanted brussel sprouts and gave me a baked potato.
For the price, I expected something special, but what I got was an overcooked disaster and service that was more “meh” than “wow.” So much for fine dining—this place is just overpriced and underwhelming. Avoid it if you know what’s good for your taste buds (and your wallet). I won't be back.

One of the last bastions of hope for the downtown Madison food industry, Tornado Steak House delivers well on supper club atmosphere and steakhouse cuisine. While the scallops were a bit disappointing, our wedge salads and steaks hit just on the mark.

I had a great experience here, and had dinner in a group of 5. Our server was really nice and the food was good too. I don't know what I was expecting but I barely touched my main dish because after the salad and the bread, I was full. Anyway, good thing they let you take a box if need be. I recommend making a reservation even though they'll find you a table if they can. It's a bit pricey.

I have dined here multiple times and also rented their basement Corral Room for my wedding reception in 2022. This past Fall they found a hole in the schedule for me on a last minute anniversary reservation. There is almost always a bar table available as well if you want to roll the dice on walking in.
There is not a single bad thing I have to say about this establishment. All of the food is just amazing, and the best steak you can get in the area. I usually order the 14oz fillet and it's always cooked properly with a delicious crust. HIGHLY recommend the giant scallops as well....Service is always wonderful and fairly timely, and the price really isn't outrageous if you lay off the drinks.
If there was a 10 star rating, I'd give it.

Dark, loud, and no art on the walls. But the tables were set up very nice. Service was great, we even had a helper server which we have never had before at other restaurants. He was great. Furthermore, hard to find the host stand, and bathrooms need some work. As for the food, the complimentary bread and veggies were a nice touch. We ordered hash browns and steaks. Hash browns were straight from the freezer isle at your local Walmart, after being told they're "world famous". Steaks were decent, asked for medium well, and turned out very very well-done, I mean it was a block of charcoal. FYI the sirloin is not quite a sirloin, more like a round chunk. Just a heads up. The filet was very small, especially for the price, and once they charred that, there was not much solid meat left on it. And that one was cooked medium. For dessert we had the pineapple upside cake, which looked great. Tasted like pancakes mixed with ice cream..if you like that then go ahead, but I'd order something else next time. Overall, it was fine. We will be going to a different steak house next time, but worth trying, if you're willing to break the bank.

Ah the Tornado Room. I have so many pleasant memories here and have always been so impressed with the quality of service and wonderful food, including their late night service. We recently visited for our wedding anniversary and had lovely steak, salmon, bread, king crab soup (unbelievably good) chocolate cake and more! They make a great old fashioned too. Only thing - maybe wouldn’t get the fries next time unless they are the late night batch. Will definitely be going back and continues to hold a special place in my heart!

After 200 Dollars for two, I have to say the cocktail and hash browns were the Best. I don't know if it is that I'm from the south. But never had sweet frog legs, they were just so sweet. Even the salad, the vinaigrette was so sweet. My wife had the rabbit the breading on that also was just so sweet. One good thing if you try this place the Hash browns and TBone are amazing. And Alex, she was the best. Amazing service very attentive. Should you give this place a Try ask for her. In Texas frog legs are not sweet. How about a little spice. The food to me just wasn't worth the 200 dollars. In my opinion Texas Roadhouse has them beat.
