We were in on a Saturday at 5. It was mostly empty. When we walked in they asked us how they could help us?? What kind of question is that? Of course we're there to eat. The fried apps came and were fine but the ranch wasn't great, more on the sour side than I prefer.
Then we waited another 40 minutes for our food. When we finally got it, it was clear that it had probably been sitting back there for 20 minutes before it came out. Mine was cold and husbands was cold and soggy.
It's a bummer when you spend your hard earned money and leave disappointed. 😕

Slowest place to get food ever. We waited 2 hours to even be seated after getting our name on the list. Went to ask the hostess about the status of our table and she was very rude and just generally unfriendly. The food was mid. Definitely not worth the 2 hour wait. This is one of those places that you want to share a review so they'll get business, but also don't want to share a review because they might get more crowded or alter something because they're getting busier. This is hands down the best place for fish fry. I've tried many of the others, including top ranked places, and it's just superior. It can get busy, but the staff is overall friendly and attentive despite the rush. I like that they often extend their fish fry to other nights than just Friday. I can't say I've had anything other than fish here besides of course come cheese curds. The only negative thing I can find to say so that you know how good this place is and I'm not just exaggerating is that the sides run out fast and the German potato salad is different than other recipes I'm used to. Their tartar sauce is absolutely delicious and the fish/batter itself is good on its own without it too!

I went here for a fish fry and everything was good up u till the end. We were done eating and socializing when the host/busser told us "i hate to do this to you but i need the table" NEVER have i ever been told to get up from my table so they could seat someone else. Stopped in for a lunch one day and regretted we didn't sit outdoors where the flies had more room. It was not enjoyable trying to eat as quickly as possible with one hand while the other continuously waved off the flies. Cut the meal short and got to-go boxes. Felt like an open air market in India. Not good in a place that serves food. Other than that all else was good.

This place is busy but it was so worth the short wait to eat. The trails end lodge has the BEST fish and seafood meals by far. However, got there off the water at 7pm. Was told it was going to be an hr wait, that was fine. But it turned into a 90 min wait, plus I asked for outside seating from the start. When I finally got called. They already closed the outside tables. They could have told me that from the start.
Atmosphere: The place was very loud the whole time. I'm kind of not a fan of that. People was getting drunk, just waiting for a set.
Was disappointed that on a nice 65 digree night that I could not be fitted outside.

This place is such a hidden gem! The food is always amazing, and it's such a great location. I always enjoying making a pit stop here for lunch or dinner when I'm out on my kayak! They're very accommodating to odd food requests (like no bun on the burger my friend ordered, and nothing other than chicken on the sandwich my other friend ordered) and they're kind, fast, and friendly. Found this gem by googling Friday fish fry in Wausau because we were passing through there. Amazing fish tacos … not your typical tiny fish buried inside a tortilla. These are huge chunks of delicious beer battered haddock cooked to perfection with tasty slaw. My husband had the perch and loved it as well. It’s a light batter that enhances the fish but doesn’t take away from it. Service was great and atmosphere too! We were 2 hours from home and said we’d make the trip just to eat there again!

You can arrive via water or roads, sit inside or outside. Live music usually on the weekends. They make a great cocktail and will even put it in your Yeti/RTIC if you bring it, no carry-ins allowed though (but that's just rude anyway). Food is freshly made and tasty! I was there Friday night with my family. We were seated in the bar area for drinks - no problem. Later on we asked the manager if we could eat dinner at the high bar table that we were currently sitting at in the bar because my dad, who is in an electric wheelchair, can not fit under the smaller sized tables in the dining room due to his wheelchair. He told us no and that they were not able to drag that table in there. We did not ask that. He then said we were not allowed to eat in the bar area after 3pm - whatever. This was very disappointing, as for one, my dad is not able to get out much because of the wheelchair and for two, this is one of the main reasons he does not leave the house; because most places are not handicap assessable , or furthermore like Trails End, discriminate against people with disabilities. How would you feel if you were told by the owner of a restaurant that you could not eat there because you are in a wheelchair? And after my grandmother told him we were leaving, he stated that he understood why. Ridiculous.

Trails End gets busy for lunch and dinner, and they do not take reservations; plan accordingly. Five of us enjoyed Friday lunch and will be back! The servers are great, food is top notch, the owner comes around (and has many patrons’ names down pat), and the views are good too! Just to let you know, their smelt was the best I have found in years!

They have a great diverse menu with something for everyone. We ordered the fish fry, poor mans, clam chowder, and smelt. We all had different sides: baked potatoes, fries, potato salad, and sweet potato fries. Everyone was completely satisfied and leftovers were packaged up.

Easily, on food quality and taste alone, I’d give five stars. However, other observations needed to be considered—and I chose 4 stars to be equally fair.

A daily drink special or food item would be a great idea. If the drink prices were a little lower I would have stayed longer and had another drink. Took over 10 minutes just to be able to speak to someone and understand the process of getting a table and ordering food. No sign describing where to go and who to talk to as this was my first time there.

After finally getting to speak to someone I was told 1.5 hour wait! Um ya, no food is worth waiting that long for. Maybe if your retired and have nothing else to do great. Definitely not somewhere to take young kids with that kind of wait.

We went last night for fish fry. They were very busy; however, service was very efficient. There were two bartenders working, both of which were friendly and polite. We were greeted and drinks ordered within a minute of stepping up. We waited about an hour for a table (we got there at 6 pm on a Friday night, so to be expected). We were given menus when we sat down and ordered with our waitress within 5 minutes. The menus didn't list potato options with the fish, which we thought was kind of odd, but our waitress had no problem giving us the options. We both had the beer battered haddock, one with German potatoe salad and one with baked potato. The batter was very light and the fish was perfectly cooked. We also ordered chesse curds, which MIGHT be the best ones we've had in the area. They were obviously handbreaded and lightly fried. She checked back on us a couple min after giving us our food, brought new drinks within a min or two of asking, as well as our check and boxes when requested. An individual who I believe was the owner, was also very involved with the service (hosting, checking on tables, etc) which was very nice. It was a great experience and we would definitely go back.

5/21/2021: I was given a 45 minute to an hour wait time, with a party of one, enjoying a night out, to myself. After waiting a while, my manager asked me to fill in, so I told her, I'd be there, after dinner. After sitting for an hour and a half, listening to almost every staff member complain about the management and inefficiency of the establishment, I was finally seated.

After sitting, a while, a waitress asked if I was waiting for someone to come to my table, and I said, with my menu closed, yes, I was still waiting for service. She walked off. I sat over ten minutes, before the owner asked if I had been served. I told him, no, and that after nearly two hours of wait, I had no more time to waste.

I wish I would have skipped the attempt to dine, here, and gone to help my manager, sooner. I was going to order my dinner, plus more for work, since I didn't have time to pack a lunch, and I went to work with neither. The dining room was half full, emptying, as I sat, waiting for service. What exactly took so long?

This is abhorrent practice for any restaurant. I even tried to call ahead, to get my name in, sooner, but you don't take call in reservations. Given the fact I saw no other male staff, front of house, it must have been the owner. He said, one of my party has to be present, and I told him, I was the only one in my party, and my being the only one made no difference.

The man, asking if I had been served, shrugged off my experience and wait time, so I asked the bartender who to put in a complaint with, and she pointed to the man who had been addressing me, informing me of his position, as owner. If you want people to come back, you don't treat people like that; especially, after you've backburnered their service.

Absolutely fantastic Friday fish fry! We went two Fridays in a row. Both times the food, cocktails and service were excellent. Super fast too.
