Fish fry was delicious

Unfortunately, I’m knocking off stars. First, Wednesday night fish fry is not a thing anymore. (“They just don’t know how many people will come” was the excuse our waitress gave). That was just the beginning of our disappointing night. After we asked for water, the waitress snatched our drink menus away… so I guess we’re *just* having water. We settled on a burger and the chicken Parmesan. The burger with fries and coleslaw, the chicken with a house salad. The house salad turns out to be bagged chopped romaine (with a big chunk of dirty stem in it), three slices of cucumber, two slivers of green pepper, 1.5 cherry tomatoes, and a few chunks of raw onion. The burger is an industrial patty on a nondescript bun with a side of nondescript fries. The chicken Parmesan is also nondescript and served with watery runoff from either a separating sauce or poorly drained spaghetti. They know it’s a problem because they served the chicken balanced on the knife to keep it out of the wet. There is also garlic bread, also nondescript but leaves a strange waxy coating in your mouth. Honestly, it was all reminiscent of high school cafeteria food. The bill for that was $40. The waitresses were in the corner squabbling about who had gotten more tables that night so far as we left. What used to be a hilight of our “up north” vacation is not that anymore. We’ve been talking about trying new places and I think this was our cue to do just that. It’s unfortunate because we’ve been coming here for years and used to recommend it to everyone we talk to. Maybe the locals at the bar every night will be enough to keep the doors open, our dinner certainly wasn’t.

Love this place! It’s small and out of the way, but they have the best fish fry! We always come when we’re in the area. All you can eat, served family style with steak fries, coleslaw, and rolls. Kitchen opens at 4:30 and tables for only 30something so sometimes there’s a short wait. To avoid the crowd, come on Wednesday for the fish fry, they have it both nights. The staff is always friendly, prompt, and professional. The portions are generous and the waitresses keep an eye on your table to make sure if you want more to keep the fish coming. Someday we might try something other than the fish...But until then, just bring me that giant pile of crispy, hot deliciousness!

We came with 9 adults and 2 kids. Friday "all you can eat" fish fry. The wait staff were friendly, patient, and pleasant. It added to the great experience we had.. The fish was lightly battered and wonderful. Cole slaw was fresh and creamy; delicious. Served family style. Wonderful northen Wisconsin.

Chicken Parm - 4/5
Very good, good-sized portion, plenty of sauce. Good price!

Kids spaghetti+garlic Bread 5/5
Very good, a little watery before mixing it up but kiddo enjoyed it!

Shrimp Scampi - 1/5
Tasted like butter and shrimp was plated on top of a serving of spaghetti. No color on the shrimp or noodles. Definitely didn't match ANY of the photos/reviews

We have lived nearby for 45 years and have avoided eating at Trailways due to indifferent food and service. The new ownership seems to have reversed that situation. The menu is more interesting, the food is good, the service is great, and the prices are reasonable.

We called for a last minute dinner reservation for Valentines and they were able to accommodate us right away. We had the walleye cheeks with cajun tartar and bacon wrapped scallops. Both were delicious but the cajun tartar was definately the perfect touch. My husband had the chicken parm and I had the steak and lobster. Everything was amazing! Salads were fresh and crisp. Ended the night with the tiramisu bomb and an old fashion sweet. Great job to the staff and our server Hailey! Keep up the great work!

Went out for my birthday. Evidently you can't get a steak on a Friday night. Offering a very limited menu or Friday Fish Fry. We decided that we drove 20+ miles to get there so we stayed for the fish fry. The fried fish was so thin and overcook. We had to ask someone other than our waitress for a second helping (because our waitress didn't come back to our table) and we were still hungry. It came and was cold. Will not be back.

The steak was good and the waitress was nice, the salmon and fish fry were extremely overcooked and the cook argued that they weren’t. We didn’t even eat the salmon and they didn’t refund it. There’s no drink price menu for a reason - a Windsor old fashioned was $14, for a very sub par drink. Don’t even think about ordering an old fashioned sour, they don’t know how to make it and I’m pretty sure they’re from IL or something, because it tasted like it came from there. Don’t go here.

Took our daughter's family for dinner tonight. They have two youngsters (2&4). The kids enjoyed their kids meals and the adults did as well. Three of us had walleye which was excellent. My husband had the prime rib sandwich special which he liked too. We came at 4:30 and were happy to learn it was happy hour. The deserts were surprisingly good. They were on par with an offering at a fine dining restaurant in a metropolitan area. We had the key lime cake and Tuxedo chocolate ganache cake. Our server was very attentive and fulfilled our requests efficiently. We definitely recommend this restaurant and plan to go back again.

Only one complaint or more a suggestion. Went on the website and you said you were open at 4:30 Jan. 3rd. Another couple and ourselves went for our anniversary dinner only to find you were closed, and after calling we found out you were closed until Jan. 8th. Maybe you should have put that message on your web page. Two other cars pulled in after us and were also disappointed.

We visited Trailways on Friday, July 7th. Our party of three were seated within 5 minutes. The service was great, the Old Fashioneds perfect and the "all you can eat fish fry" was delicious. They recently reopened under new ownership.
We had a reservation at 5:30 on Sat night. There are probably about a dozen tables and a dozen seats at the bar. Bar was full and tables were 75% full when we arrived. Parking lot was almost at capacity.
As can be expected with a new opening, they were still ironing some things out-the waitstaff was very good, the food was excellent, but we did have delays-which we didn't mind because we were there with friends and we were not rushed to accommodate a later reservation.
My friend and I had the walleye with green beans and side salad. Everything was amazing! Our guys wanted ribeye but it wasn't available. My hubby had the prime rib with steak fries-good. And our friend had the filet mignon with steak fries-very good. For dessert we shared a lava chocolate chip cake and a piece of caramel turtle cheese cake- both were fabulous.

Service was so bad we didn't even stay to eat. From the bartender/owner to the hostess and the server, this is the worst experience I have ever had. The place is quaint inside and the food may be good but we were treated so badly we just couldn't stay another minute. Bartender/owner was rude - we heard other people commenting on his rudeness as well - And because we ordered an appetizer at the bar while waiting for a table, the server assumed we were just going to sit at her table and not order. We assured her we were both ordering dinner her attitude improved. Hostess was beyond rude - had a question about the menu and she swooped over, grabbed the menu and pointed at the item I was asking about and threw the menu back on the table muttering "I guess you had too much to drink". Really? We handed the server $10 for tying up her table for 5 minutes and left. Ugh! Never returning to this place and don't recommend to anyone who wants a pleasant dining experience.

Update based on response: We asked how much we owed when we left and were told 8 dollars and we gave you a 20. I am sorry that you disagree with the time but I make sure to make it as accurate as possible when doing reviews. We understand you are short staffed but the way we were treated by that staff was not appropriate. After sitting for 30 minutes the server came to the table with appetizers which were good and that time was good. But when a member of the our 6 adults and 2 kids under 7 years old group said, "We are ready to order" the response from the server was, "Well I am not" and walked off. I write the reviews to places based on my expieriance. Taking a little responsibility for the service would be appriciated.
First Review: This place had good reviews but was very disappointed. Both bartender and sever seemed tired and wore out. Server was short and came off disrespectful. They had open tables when we were seated. We were there for about total of 2 and a half hours. We wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt but after waiting for our order for over 2 hours we had to leave. With to little kids we could not wait for food any longer. There were 15 tables sat, severd, finished thier meals, and left in the time we sat there and did not recieve our meals.

Tonight's special was short ribs or cabbage rolls both sounded good. Had chicken wings with steak fries and cole slaw and better-half had patty melt with steak fries and cole slaw. Love the grounds, love the homey feel. Dark wood and they had windows open so it felt like being outdoors...no air conditioning needed. Few people at the bar and tables are at least 6 ft apart. This was, by far, the WORST dining experience I have had in the Hayward area.

My wife and I split the “Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon” with bourbon orange glaze. It arrived from the kitchen lukewarm. My wife tried a small forkful and immediately pushed her plate away. Then I tried a piece and I understood why she refused to eat any more. It was terrible; or, to use her word in describing the salmon as we were driving home, “horrible.” Normally, properly prepared salmon will “flake off” a section at a time. Not this stuff. It was tough and tasteless like it had been sitting around since the last Ice Age.

At some point in time the waitress appeared and we handed her back essentially the entire meal she had brought to us from the kitchen. She asked if we wanted a “to go” box, but we declined. One might expect that upon seeing that virtually the entire meal had been rejected by her customers a waitress would ask if there might be something wrong. Not this one. She either had no clue or simply didn’t care. I should say that we did not send the baked potato back. Why? Because although it was supposed to come with the meal, the waitress never even bothered to bring it to us.

I was then presented with a bill in excess of $31. The charge for the salmon was $18.95. The extra salad plate was $9.98 or so. The balance was sales tax. Our only beverages were water. I placed two $20 bills onto the billing tray, after which the waitress had the audacity to ask if we wanted change. I will admit that I did not leave the waitress a tip. She simply didn’t deserve one.

My wife and I drove a round trip of about 90 miles for this “dining” experience. Needless to say, we wouldn’t walk across the street to visit this place again.

We eat out a lot, perhaps more than we should. We know the difference between a good meal and a bad meal. The terrible salmon consumed much of our conversation on our 45-mile trip home. So, I called the owner of Trailways Inn and told him of our experience. His main concern was why we didn’t say something to him while at his eatery as opposed to calling him later. The reason for this, I told him, was because I am not fond of making a scene in front of the 10 other people in our dinner party. I don’t think he understood what I was trying to tell him. He never uttered one syllable of contrition or suggested that perhaps he could make things right for us. In our minds, he had our money and it was now his. Period.

They say that word of mouth is the best advertising. The opposite is also true.

Before you enter, there is easy parking and lovely landscaping. A beautiful hosta garden surrounds a small "pond" and there is a barrel with a decorative fountain that looks like an old fashioned pump.

We entered and the owner greeted us and took us to a table. We requested a different table that was easier for conversing. He quickly cleaned it off and reseated us.

The menu has a nice variety including daily specials. I ordered the special quarter chicken with spaghetti, and my mom ordered the Reuben. Both were delicious.

The chicken was deep fried an it was so different than anything I've ever had before. The breading was more than crispy, it was cracker-crispety-crunchy. I loved it! The chicken was moist and the breading wasn't overly salty, a reason I usually avoid fried chicken.

The spaghetti side was generous. The pasta was perfectly Al Dente. The sauce was thick and coated the pasta well. I don't know that it's made from scratch there, but it tasted like it was - deep tomato flavor.

I sampled the fries that came with my mom's sandwich. They were large, thick steak fries -my favorite kind of fries! I rarely eat fries, but I find steak fries irresistible. These were lightly salted, perfect for my taste.

My mom said her Reuben was delicious.

The waitress was friendly and seemed very experienced. I'll never be able to carry plates stacked up on my arms like that!

Service was rather slow- very musty smell and a 25 minute wait. Very expensive. Malt vinegar set at every table and we thought we smelled feet (almost got up and left) and turned out it was the vinegar. 5:00 a drink. Fish fry wasn't amazing, but at least it was fish. The restaurant was very beautiful on the outside and very home-like on the inside but it was VERY EXPENSIVE.

Overall out of our way and not worth it. I would not recommend this to people visiting hayward.

This place was fantastic. We had stumbled across it because our "highly rated" original destination fish fry had an hour and a half wait, which doesn't work with three hungry little kids. We were in and out in less than an hour and won't need to eat breakfast after a fantastic filling meal. Good price, friendly service, and a true, typical northwoods atmosphere.
