Only a 3 due to the basically non existent course management. The day I played we flew through 5 holes then did nothing but wait for the rest of the round. Pushing 15 mins a hole makes the round not enjoyable anymore. Never once did we see a ranger we were just told in the clubhouse well it’s busy today so it might be slower; that’s your cue to enforce pace Turtleback.
Course it self 5/5 beautiful track and well kept nice job grounds crew for making it great.
If you like waiting a lot this is the course to play. If you play a lot think twice on a weekend.

Be prepared to wait 10 minutes on every tee box on weekends. They consistently let 5-somes out and ruins it for the rest of us. Need better course management.

Best hidden gem and sleeper course in all of WI! The layout is soooo good and the course is just all around a blast to play! Won't overpower or overwhelm you at any level. Plenty of risk/reward and very playable for all abilities. Conditions were outstanding considering all the rain and play they've seen.

Awesome golf course - really well kept greens, fairways, tee boxes. Hole layouts that provide many options on how to play the whole - wish I could play here more often! Saw some deer on 15 this morning - lovely time out there

First time to the Rice Lake area (from MN) and playing Turtleback. What a beautiful course. Well maintained and pace of play was surprisingly perfect given the holiday weekend. We were paired up a with a lovely couple and enjoyed our round. Employees were gracious, friendly and helpful. Wish there were more places to stay on the lake in this area because we'd love to come back to this course again.

Horribly managed golf course. Don’t play here unless you expect to play a five hour round waiting on every shot. They let groups of 5 play even on a packed Saturday morning. Reported slow play to the teenager running the club house multiple times and he never did anything about it. Also, made an online tee time reservation and was prompted after to create an account but the reservation never placed. Got an email confirmation for making the account but lost the reservation. Wouldn’t recommend anything about this place. Absolute disaster.

BRAVO to the manager! My parents were visiting from Minnesota and we were looking for a fun day. Turns out a full day of fun can be had at Turtleback. We enjoyed a wonderful round of golf with the course in tip-top shape. Fairways were perfectly groomed and the rough was penal without being ridiculously tough. The greens were receptive to a quality shot and respectfully fast. We thoroughly enjoyed the round. We went into town for supper but nothing peaked our interest as each person has vastly different food tastes, so we returned to Turtleback to enjoy supper at the restaurant - EXQUISITE! The dinner salads were quite large, with fresh mixed greens. Main courses (BBQ ribs, walleye, pasta) were perfectly prepared and nicely plated. We even saved a touch of room for dessert. Afterwards we enjoyed the Thursday Night live music. A magnificent finish to an ideal spring day. Special shout-out to Courtney, she even rounded up some blankets for the ladies that were a little chilly as the evening went on. Staff was so attentive... What a GREAT team, we'll be back!

I first played this course probably 20 years ago. Have played it a few times since. It's always a treat. On occasion I think it might be a bit early in the season or late in the summer and the conditions might be suspect, but each time I visit it's always great. The staff is friendly. The course has some great nuance. It makes you think on quite a few shots. Not that I need more than a basic challenge. There is just something about it that makes it seem interesting for a good golfer (not me) as well as being fair for the average player. It's a gem in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

We had a beautiful and delicious evening on the deck of the restaurant last night. My husband enjoyed the fish fry special, and I loved the Mahi Mahi with mushroom risotto. The cheese curd appetizer was also great. The green beans were delicious. We had one small problem with our food, but they went above and beyond to fix it and make sure we were satisfied. Thanks for a wonderful evening!

My guys group and I chose to make about an hour drive to Turtleback this year and we are certainly happy we did. Great vibe, nice people, beautiful clubhouse and affordable price for the golf course you get to play. Even the small things like free coffee by the door before walking over to warm up was a ncie way to start the early morning round. Really enjoyed the golf course as well. Fun design, relatively forgiving off the tee but challenging approach shots and greens. The way some holes are designed it gives you creative options to smash driver to get up close or lay back and have a fuller shot in. Greens had just been punched but still rolled well enough. I imagine the greens get faster and higher quality if we had come at a different time of year. We had a great time and I'd highly recommend.

I had my wedding reception at Turtleback and it wasn't a great experience. The banquet and event manager was quitting and a new person was taking over the position. I didn't know about this until the day before my wedding and details were not shared between them. I asked for the tables to be bare to put on my own tablecloths (which I informed them of prior). However, they already had their own tablecloths on as well as dinnerware. I take to take everything off the tables myself. Then ask for the dishes to be wash because they've been handled so many times. The new event manager was very passive aggressive. During my reception she pulled she asked me when I was going to take down everything. I had already told the staff I was going to do this the day after as it is written in their guide. She complained that had been working so many days in a row and that they would be closed and she would have to come in on her day off. I did not get to take home leftovers, however they certainly helped themselves. They would not serve the remaining cake. I had to ask to see if there was any left so it could be served during the dance. She stated, "our chef is gone, do YOU want the responsibility of cutting it and serving it?" I just wonder if they planned to keep it for themselves. This lady was extremely odd, rude, and unhelpful. I asked for the food to be served in the opposite hallway because it doesn't make sense to have it near the bathrooms were there is so much foot traffic. Some people weren't served cake and were told there was none left. Some people weren't served food items. It was an unpleasant experience because of the lack of communication and lack of clarity. I ended up doing a lot of things myself as staff was no where to be found.

Beautiful course, spacious driving range, difficult practice green. Love the course, challenging back nine but fun holes as well. Great bartender, she made a drink that my friend made up on the spot. The practice green had a lot of slope! Large parking lot with plenty of room to park. Probably not a fun course to walk but the front nine you could do it, the back nine would be tough (some distance between a few holes). Recommend!

Played this course June 17. This is an incredibly well maintained course. The fairways are perfect. The greens were in great shape and running fast. Some of the pin positions were quite challenging. There were plenty of hazards ..sand and water. But it was not too difficult. The course is littered with humps throughout...the turtlebacks I suppose. It was beautiful. I would recommend...and will be back.

Front nine is pretty flat, like a turtle that's been run over by a cement truck. The back nine is like a camel back with 7 or 8 humps. Which would make a camel look really odd but is good land for golf holes. Great finishing par 5 but playing it straight into a 20 mph wind two days in a row is not good for scoring if you're not Tom Watson or Seve.

A hidden gem if you will. It is one of the best maintained courses I’ve played on the Western side of Wisconsin. The greens were in great shape, rolled true and fast. The rough was course, yet cut very nicely. The back 9 provides slightly more difficult greens and dog-legs, and the front holds slightly wider fairways and more bunkers to hit into.

My youngest son and I visited for the first time last Sunday morning. I have often wondered how this course was just by seeing it from the nearby highway. Was always intrigued by the name and how the the lay of course my have given something to do with it. Upon our arrival to the course we were already impressed as to how clean and kept the grounds were. The recent storms in this area had caused alot of damage to other courses and to private property in general. There wasn't a blade of grass out of place. My son's and I generally get a round in a week, weather permitting. Sunday it was just the 2 of us. What a wonderful experience. We as a group like to try different courses in our area, this was a little over an hour drive for us. I can't say enough how simply amazed we both were of the course. Definitely a hidden gem in the north woods. Like my son said so eloquently, WE'LL BE BACK!
Thank you for the amazing experience.

Played Turtleback two weeks ago. I drove 2 hours to play the course and it was worth it. They offer a great deal on Mondays and Tuesdays. I hadn’t played this course for 15 years. In my opinion this course is a hidden gem. They received over 3 inches of rain and strong winds 3 days prior and the course was in immaculate shape. Hats off to the superintendent for a well manicured golf course. The greens rolled great and I can’t wait to bring my group back here in a month. I’m sure the greens will be running even faster.
The staff is friendly and you can tell they really take pride in offering a nice course to the public and great customer service. The general manager Kevin Carter is a great guy and will go out of his way for you. The course is a fair test that offers a lot of risk reward holes.

As I have golfed over 30 years. This could be one of the most overrated courses I've played.

We played Turtleneck twice in the last two weeks. Greens, tees, fairways, and sand, are all immaculate. Just beautiful at a fair and affordable price. Pro shop folks are really nice as well. Totally worth the 60 mile drive to get there. By far, the best place to play in the area.

I've been coming to the Rice Lake area for a summer visit for almost 60 years, and I always look forward to hitting irons off of the bent grass! Turtleback is an outstanding public golf course, and a ton of fun to play. I'm a course design enthusiast, and this is an exceptionally well designed track in all ways: it has a variety of hole types, can be played at many different lengths, requires thoughtful shotmaking (without unnecessary trickery), and is scenic and beautiful. The finishing hole is one of my favorites of many fine courses I've had the privilege to play. If this were a private club, I think members would be very proud of its condition. I played three times on this latest trip, and the pro shop staff couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. Almost impossible to believe, but as a solo, I even played 18 in 2 hours (with a cart and facilitated by some very friendly members who waved me through on #8). Thank you to all associated with Turtleback -- you have a real gem in the north woods!

Turtleback is always high on my list of courses to play when we make our annual visit to Wisconsin and I'm never disappointed. The fairways are like a plush green carpet and the greens roll beautifully. It's a jewel in the northland.

We have a group that gets together every August for a weekend if golf. This year we went to Turtleback for the first time. It was great!! Everyone loved it - the course is in great shape, the staff couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful, and the over-all experience was the best we have had in our 17 years of golf weekends. A special thank you to Kevin Carter for his assistance. We will be back next year!

Decided to comment after playing on July 16th. The fairways & greens are absolutely perfect! The lower cut rough is also a plus. Fortunate to have this gem close to home.

Course is in great shape. Tees and fairways were super. Greens were very fair. They held shots and were smooth. I love very fast greens and they were a little slower than I would hope for, but I'm picky. They were rolling between 9&10 . The staff was very friendly. Pace of play was quick 18 holes in 3 hours.

l played Turtleback for the first time this year on Saturday and would like to congratulate the grounds crew on the course condition considering less then two weeks ago we had so much snow that golfing was out of question. I like how the greens have come thru the winter.

We took advantage of the stay and play. It was great golf at a fabulous price! The first day we played nine holes and got rained out for the second nine. The course is in wonderful condition! Not many small town courses are as well kept or are a well designed. It was a pleasure it play. They clubhouse came to the "bar and grill" to give us our rain check. NO hassle. The second day of play was beautiful and the course was well drained after the big rain. We had tons of fun! I wish Rice Lake had better restaurants and more to do. My partner was upset by the drink cart which roared around too often and wasn't courteous when people were playing.

Seems like this course has really gone down hill the last three years use to be the best course around spot of dead grass and the greens are terrible to putt on ball marks everywhere that don't get fixed looks like people jumped all over the greens!

I golfed this course for the first time on labor day and I was incredibly surprised at how beautiful and well maintained the course was.
It only cost about $40 or so to walk which was a great deal especially considering the quality of the course. This course is very walker friendly and very well designed. It offers a variety of holes that tests all aspects of your game like course management and shot selection since there are a few holes on the course where a driver isn't your best option.
The tee boxes were designated as if you were golfing on a PGA Course; by this I mean all the tee boxes were flat, square, and with minimal divots. The moment you set foot on the first tee you'll know what I'm talking about. Lastly, the greens are also in amazing shape and incredibly firm so you won't need to worry about fixing other golfers divots which is typically a common issue especially on city courses.
I highly recommend making the trip over to this course at least once because you won't regret it. I'll definitely be making the 1 hr 40 min drive a couple more times this year to golf at Turtleback and when you finally decide to book your tee time and play this amazing course make sure you lay up on Hole 9.

Awesome risk reward holes, you can reach the 9 hole with your drive if you dare, I think it is the best kept, lush golf course in the area.
