We visited the area after about 20 years and were excited to eat at the Whitetail Inn restraint. What a complete disappointment it was.
Two of us ordered the Whiskey Shrimp. The sauce was horrible and the shrimp was WAY overcooked and had no flavor at all. The shrimp were swimming in the watery sauce, more like was a soup. I've thrown away better food than this.
My aunt ordered the Mediterranean Haddock. It was horrible as well. Also like a soup. It was very sour and was difficult to eat. She left half the plate. She couldn't stomach it.
My dad had the Pan Seared Salmon. He said it was just OK.
I asked for and received a soda. Never saw the waiter at out table till we were just about finished. The soda was flat. I asked the waiter if he could check on the carbonation. I was never asked for a refill. Finally I asked him if he checked on it, like a hint for a refill. He said he forgot. So I asked for a refill. He said he would bring it and not charge me for it. When I got the bill, the soda was on it. I guess they charge for every glass and the second one was at no charge. Seems a bit strange that they would charge for each glass. I've never seen that before at any restaurant.
We still left a 20% tip, but should have left a just a penny.
We are here a out 20 years ago and it was a great experience all around. DEFINATLY not this time.
My advice would be to come in, look around and then just leave.

Overall a disappointment. Food pretty unappealing and overpriced for the quality. I got the whisky shrimp, $32, supposedly served on a bed of risotto. It had about a cup of cream poured on top and was basically a risotto soup, with four shrimp lost within. It tasted ok but the presentation was awful. Service was mediocre; we sat at our table for a solid 10 minutes before being approached or even acknowledged by a server. Drinks were great though, and generous. The 3% "restaurant fee" added to our bill was a final insult. I'll never return.

Don't sleep on the Whitetail Inn!! We almost didn't go because of some of the bad reviews here, but I'm sure thankful we didn't let those stop us. We had the most amazing dinner! Pre-dinner cocktails and then started with the bacon wrapped chestnuts with a cherry sauce...killer appetizer!! I had the King prime rib, which was supposed to be 16 oz, but I swear it was easily 24 to 28 ounces. It was cooked to perfection and the au jus was seasoned very well. I brought more home than I could possibly eat there. My wife had the Mediterranean Haddock and she still cannot express how yummy it was. We finished with a couple of after dinner cocktails at the bar. Overall a FABULOUS evening!!

This is not the correct menu. Prices are much higher in the restaurant and not the same choices. We checked the menu before we went and were disappointed.

I am not sure what happened. We ate here a year ago and it was delicious. So, we came back this year and it was terrible. All of the entrees in our order were terrible. The whiskey shrimp was like getting a bowl of warm cream with overcooked shrimp and risotto that was inedible. I sent it back and ordered a ribeye, only to receive that was so undercooked it was nowhere near how I ordered it. Everyone else had steaks and they were also totally cooked wrong. Even after sending them back, they still came back wrong. The cuts of steak were bad and lots of gristle. I can say that we won't be back and we felt like we wasted our money dining here again. What a disappointment.

I was so excited to finally have dinner here the place is absolutely gorgeous. But the service was just mediocre. Our waitress was nice but never offered us water or asked if I wanted another drink. Now the food. I ordered the whiskey shrimp. They were med size at best very hard and overcooked. It was supposed to come with a little cream but it was swimming in it and had no flavor. My husband's ribs were ok but nothing special. We are retired and dine out often. Usually give a place a second chance but not this place.

The bartenders were wonderful and the garlic cheese curds were great but that’s about as far as it goes for me…I ordered the whiskey shrimp risotto and it was awful. The shrimp was completely over cooked and the risotto was like a watery cream soup… it was quite disappointing, I don’t think I will ever go back.

Ok. So this place has got to have the most caring, involved and aware manager/management in all Northern Wisconsin. Just watching management interact and support the staff inspires me to be a kinder more aware person. Seriously. How refreshing. I’m going to safely assume that this is the major factor behind the kindness and calmness of the service staff. And to top it all off, the food is so amazing! It’s gotta be hard work maintaining such fresh, consistent meals, but this crew has nailed it.
If you have not been in, I insist you check it out. Even for just a drink and conversation. You won’t regret it.

Went for dinner on Thursday night. 6:30 reservation. This huge beautiful building was pretty much empty. Chicken Marsala and Chicken Piccatta were both way over cooked. The rissotto was cold, filet was over cooked. The salad bar was anemic. The Salmon was very good and ribeye was done as ordered. Service started out well but as food took an hour to come out the drinks ran empty. This place was empty but food still took an hour. Very dissapointed. They reimbursed us the two chicken meals. Run away from this place. They need to figure it out quick, The summer busy season is here.

This was THE worst service we have had for as long as we can remember. We were there for over 1.5 hours before we were served (after complaining twice about the very slow service) even with a reservation. When bringing our concerns to the waitress’s and bartender’s attention they were defensive, rude and disrespectful. We were about to get up to leave when our food finally arrived…only to be less than appetizing. Kid’s hamburgers had buns that were literally solid from being under the heat lamp for so long they couldn’t even bite into it. Kid’s corn dogs were burnt to black (embarrassing to even put on the table). The rest of us had fish fry which was also unappetizing and disappointing. Also, the bartender told me he would give us “a big, big discount”. They only gave us a 20% discount. More than 20% of our food was inedible. We will not be revisiting this venue again. I was embarrassed for them. Please save yourselves the trouble and DO NOT GO HERE.

The place is lovely, the service was slow, slow, slow and the kitchen totally dropped the ball. The appetizer came out cool and four out of four meals were not good. The fish was old and over cooked, the medium rare prime rib was bloody and room temperature, the chicken was o.k. but the vegetables on the plate were cold and the French dip arrived without the dip. Not a good birthday celebration.

Food was not good.
The only thing that was decent was the garlic cheese curds, which would be embarrassing for anyone to mess up.
The beef was so dry it was inedible. One person at our table took one bite and did not touch the rest of his steak, only ate his potatoes that came on the side. The server didn’t come to check in at all until the end of the meal. She saw he didn’t eat his steak and asked him, “you didn’t like it?” When he responded that it was really dry she said, “well why didn’t you tell me I could’ve taken it off?” How was he supposed to tell her if she never checked in on the table? She also still charged us for the steak he didn’t eat.
Three of us ordered the salmon. It was cooked unevenly, raw in the center for all of us, which means it either was cooked from frozen or wasn’t fully thawed. The plate also lacked vegetables, there were only a few leaves of spinach on the side along with marinated artichoke hearts from a jar.
Whiskey shrimp that two others chose was edible but nothing special and definitely not worth even half the price.

Somewhat awkward when we walked in, the 2 women were very nice but not overly. When we got to our table she said the food items that they are out of, disappointed, so we both wondered wear to go now, we finally went to the old Perkins. Food was very good, prices seemed just a bit high. Place appeared to be clean and has a calm, positive feel. We will be back soon.

The food we could get was good, however everything we came for like the prime rib and the risotto they were out of. They were also out of the duck. The steak we ordered was good. The soup was too salty. My son in law wanted the scallops with risotto and the chef wouldn't do it. I understand we had the last seating but maybe you shouldn't offer the late seating if your out of half the items. My son ordered mussels and the waitress said oh those really take a long time like she didn't want him to order that. We were really looking forward to our dinner as it was recommended to us but doubtful we'll be back

The worst "wait staff" I have ever seen! The "wait staff" never asked to take a drink order ( we had to go to the bar ourselves) she took our food order and then never came back.
Over half of the minimal items at the salad bar were empty (including the dressings). Plus we had to go and ask for our dinner rolls.
Once the food was finally delivered the steaks were cold and the scallops were overcooked.
The men's bathroom smelled like it had not been cleaned for months. I was even afraid to wash my hands ( thank goodness for personally brought wipes)!
We had to go to ask the "wait staff" for the bill and dog food containers.
The best part of our experience was leaving!

My wife and I had prime rib on Saturday night. This was very tough! We ordered it medium rare. There was so much grissle, just a bad piece of meat. We also had the bacon wrapped chestnuts, the chestnuts were mushy
Our server was lousy, she didn't even get us any refills or asked about our meal.
We spent over 150 dollars, not a good meal for the money.

Mixed bag. Hostess in severe need of etiquette training. She talked over and through us to people walking out the door as we arrived. When we left, no thank you, she was too busy texting. Does she realize she is in the service industry? Server Daniel is fantastic, please take care of him. The food was excellent but kind of pricy, but that's okay, we get it. What we don't understand, in a restaurant serving area of this size, is why your servers (4 last night) are each running all over the restaurant instead of being in quadrants. My wife wanted a coffee at the end of dinner, but was concerned that we would have been there another hour waiting for it and the check - Daniel was running to all corners of the restaurant. The drinks were excellent. Your bartender spoke with us when we arrived, he is the one with manners, a very pleasant and polite man. All this being said, we will come back.

Our family have been coming to Whitetail for dinner the last four years when we vacation in St Germain on Labor Day weekend. Always getting an excellent meal but apparently there's a new chef. Eleven of us ordered various entrees from Filet, Ribeye, Perch and Burger and fries. To be honest, the burger was the only thing edible. Steaks were tough and chewy, fish was mushy and undone. Sorry Whitetail, you had a great restaurant, so sad to say goodbye.

I chose Whitetail to celebrate my 70th birthday with 13 friends yesterday. We had a reservation at 4:00. I ordered the 8 ounce filet medium. I was served about a 4 ounce piece of well done charred meat. Everything on my dinner plate was cold including the veggies and sad looking potatoes. This was a $48.00 entree. Our table bill was $567.00 and a generous tip was left for our waitress. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. We were not asked if we even wanted dessert. No Birthday cake for me..

This place is absolutely beautiful and very spacious. The bar area is also incredibly large. The woodwork is bright and welcoming while the service was very friendly and accommodating. Great salad bar as well. This chef is nothing short of fantastic. His coffee encrusted ribeye is truly the best I've ever had. Anywhere. (And I don't even like or drink coffee.) I've traveled quite extensively and enjoyed many great dining experiences around the US and Canada. I'm telling you. This is hands down my #1 favorite ribeye. Compliments to Chef Tanner. We came here on a summer/busy season Wednesday evening with 4 adults and 2 children (with no reservations). The hostesses were very accommodating and the wait was reasonable. The bar area has bar seats, smaller tables for two, and round tables that seat four so the space to wait in is great. Drinks were also superb; perhaps the best brandy old-fashioned I had all week. Dinner was well spaced: kids food came first with appetizers, then salads, and main course. There was only one vegetarian option that was slightly bland, but overall I would definitely come back here. Wonderful atmosphere, great drinks, kid-friendly!

Once a staple of the Northwoods, the food at Whitetail has always been delicious and reliable.
Unfortunately, this restaurant has lost its way. Not sure if there is new ownership, but the quality has gone down so much so that it warrants a review in hopes for improvement.
Even the old charming menu describing the storied history of the restaurant with pictures has been substituted out for a generic menu.
Food is way over priced and downright disappointing. Food was over cooked and once included sides are no longer added.
Bathrooms are dirty and rather than refilling soap and paper towels, both were left on counters.
Prices are for big cities and as an example, ribs are now $37 for a full rack, up from the $18.95 posted under the Google menu.
Please bring back the old Whitetail Inn. The Northwoods needs it!

We ate here for Easter Brunch. Granted our reservation was for 2:30, so I know food can run out by then, but they were out of almost everything. There was eggs, bacon, sausage, a noodle dish, fish balls, chicken and prime Rib. The dessert bar only had two items left as well. Doesn't sound like a bad spread but for $33/person? Not worth it. I worked in service for 10+ years at a place where we had Mothers day brunch every year among others and if you have that many reservations, you make sure you have enough food for every last person. Probably won't be back.

Unfortunately, my first experience was subpar. A long hair in my salad, the wrong walleye meal served and full of bones, shrimp alfredo which was more like a bowl of alfredo sauce with a some noodles and shrimp included, and a "loaded baked potato" which you have to make yourself. The bill was $95 for my 12 year old son and I, where the only drinks were one bottle of beer and water. Doubtful that I'll try again, it's hard for a place to be that far off their game.

Food was way overpriced for the quality, basically a TGI fridays. I chose the bourbon steak and it was OK at best, if it was $10 to $12 less it would be more appropriate. The jack Daniels sauce used was the same you can buy at a grocery store, the steak was Walmart quality. My wife chose the portobella steak tips over rice pilaf, it was not great quality and over priced too. Staff was slow but nice, the old fashion was good.
We tried it even after being told it was overpriced but the place across the street had a 1.5 hour wait time and this place was empty, should have been a red flag but we were too hungry to think it through

My wife and I had our wedding reception here back in June, and everything was exceptional. The food was excellent, and we received many compliments from our guests on both the quality and atmosphere of the venue. The staff was also very easy to work with and very helpful. I would highly recommend it as both an event space or just as a place to eat.

What a great night. We made 5:30 dinner reservations and had a delicious dinner. From start to finish we sat down, ordered, ate and left in less than 1 hour. Bonus was we got to enjoy the St.Germain concert crawl at 6:30. Thank you Whitetail Inn

My wife ordered a dish and the waitress brought a different one and insisted that it was a similar dish and just needed salsa. According to the manager that was a totally different dish. I don't know why she didn't tell us that a mistake was made. That would have been the most correct way to proceed. Now, I don't know if we would ever go back there again.

Over the past few years we have started dining at the many great supper clubs in Northern Wisconsin. The Whitetail Inn where we dined this evening is among them. The half pound basket of perch was very good, but what really tickled our taste buds were the smashed garlic potatoes and the ribeye. Yes, it is char-grilled, and the flavor reflects that.

The Whitetail serves up the best Thanksgiving brunch in the Northwoods, food is delicious, service is excellent, and the log decor atmosphere adds to the comfortable ambiance.
Whitetail Inn - St Germain, one of the Northwoods iconic dining establishments. Crafted from 100 year old logs, harvested in near by Phelps - the building is worth the visit. However, the ambiance is topped by Jeff & Joy's attention to detail by delivering delicious food and ice cold cocktails. "She" had the Krispy Kod and I had the lightly battered perch. Awesome Friday Fish Fry in the Northwoods. If you like the fries at the "Golden Arches", you'll love the thin cut fries at the Whitetail Inn. Thank you Jessica for your friendly hospitality, the service was excellent - never would have known it was only your 2nd day. Visit the Whitetail Inn on Hwy 70 and soak up the iconic ambiance and famous hospitality. Enjoy, we always do.

Lovely place. Attentive service. At least a slight attempt to implement covid safety measures....tables were placed 6' apart. Waitresses, both no one else, wore masks. Would not attend again until we were more comfortable with safety measure implementations.

We wanted to take a moment to recommend The Whitetail Inn of St Germain to anyone searching for the perfect Northwoods wedding venue. The owners, Jeff and Joy were incredible to work with from day one suggesting ideas based on years of experience. They worked well with our wedding vendors needing time for their setup. The open space was perfect for 180 guests showcasing the log interior, fireplace and huge bar! The wait staff and bartenders were extremely accommodating also. Be sure to rent the adjoining apartment for the wedding party. It would have been very convenient to have for our guests.
