Our first visit to this quaint mom and pop place 9/29/25. Our server was Mark and he was super friendly and attentive. Our food was served quickly and was delicious. Just the kind of place we were looking for in our short visit to Madison.

If you have a allergy do not eat here. I have a gluten allergy and let the waiter know. My food came out with bread on top and after letting them know the response was a very rude “well then I’ll just do this”, with this being lifting the bread off. Please be careful.

Lovely hole in the wall. Place was packed. Waited about 10 minutes for a seat. Our waitress, and the only server, was great. Hash browns and bacon were top-notch, tasty and not greasy. Eclectic vibe if you're snooty - stay away.

The food was horrible and burnt and not worth the money or time to even consider how much we paid. Like it's really hard to mess up on breakfast and well they did that. Ive been here before the whole staff change and I can agree with alot of old regulars that this place has gone down hill alot. I will not be coming back and they lost another old time customer.

So I decided I wanted to go out on a little date with my man I’m new to Madison he got a skillet and I got the French toast sausage and corn beef hash and everything was over cooked the skillet was over and under cooked we were very disappointed I payed 36.50 definitely not worth it what so ever I will not be returning to this cafe

Quaint little spot with great flavors on the menu. I got the Guiilermalby's omelet. Holy heck! I have to say, is it had the freshest slice of avocado tucked inside that I had ever had which brought it all together. The server gave the best comparison when I asked her about it and that it was like Nuevo ranchers as an omelet!
Don't forget to hit an ATM before dining in or taking it to go. It is $$ only, but they do have an ATM on site - just not sure of the fees there?
After you feed your appetite, you can stop next door for fresh ink!

Exactly what you’d expect from a small neighborhood cafe, in the best way possible! Take a seat anywhere, and the friendly staff will greets you with a smile and a hot cup of coffee, served in a mug that doesn’t match any of the others. (Trust me, it’s part of the charm.)
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I immediately felt at ease. I ordered one of their skillet meals from my server, Chess (AWESOME PERSONALITY!) and it was just what I needed. It’s the kind of food you’d make at home, if you felt like cooking and had the time to put the love in it - well seasoned and full flavor.
I didn’t feel rushed. My food came out in a reasonable amount of time. My coffee cup never went empty. DID I MENTION HOW WELCOME I FELT?!?!? Love this place. I’ll be coming back. 🧡

Just know it takes an over an hour to get your food. Youll see this place as 4.5 stars but if you read most of the reviews it will say it takes forever to get food. Make sure you have a snack before you come or if you have blood sugar troubles like myself bring a snack.
Waiter was super nice.
The women’s bathroom there are holes in the walls with tiles on the floor. Not clean at all, it’s down in a basement that is also not clean.
I was sitting on the stools and could see the cook eating food while cooking. I understand people get hungry… like myself waiting over an hour for my food… but do it on a break. I would prefer not to share germs with someone I don’t know.
Definitely will NOT be coming back. It was $36 for two people (skillet and omelet).

Really cute place with great food, BUT:
(1) We order food, order not repeated back
(2) Food takes somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half.
(3) Our order is wrong (veggie omelette rather than vegetarian cheese omelette), which a separate server helps us quickly reconcile; an understandable mishap, just more frustrating because of the long waits.
(4) We pay in cash with full 20% tip (we basically never tip under this, we don’t really see that as an option).
(5) We loiter to finish coffees and the original waitress confronts us on the order mishap, trying to gaslight us into thinking that ‘veggie’ and ‘vegetarian’ mean the same thing; she then claims we didn’t tip her, which we patently did but can’t prove because they only accept cash payments.

We came in there at 1:08 PM today and the person kicked us out and said they were not going to serve us. I am a black male. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it but the guy basically kicked us out and said the cook didn’t feel like making us food never give this place business if this is how they operate.
I was humiliated there was 5 groups in there eating and we were kicked out. Disgusting
For context, we were there for all of five seconds and never even got to sit down. We walked in, said that we were there to buy some food. Just trying to place out, Cook was very upset for some reason and said out loud that he didn’t feel like making any more food right in front of us and walked away , so the server told us that we would have to leave and he didn’t feel like making food that is literally the entire interaction and we were happy to try an old-school breakfast place.

I'm visiting from Indianapolis and decided to stop in for breakfast based off the reviews. The place was packed so I had to sit at the diner which was a pain bc i have scoliosis
and the diner seats don't have backs. Once I saw a booth open up I grabbed a seat only to be told to move back to the diner bc that seat is reserved for 2 guest or more. Once going back to the diner a non paying customer with antennas waved at me as it crawled past the diner. Everyone watched it and continued with their food. I just could not. Indianapolis would never. Idk if the roach was the sous chef or what but I can't do insects and rodents around my food.

Let's start with the good. Food and service was great. Now, the not good at all. The very dirty and in urgent need of repair bathroom, is in basement. To get there, you descend to a full story stairway that has a black dirty hand rail. The women's bathroom sink faucet is very loose and not attached to sink. Toilet seat is broken. The Tiled wall is caving in, with a stack of tiles piled on floor next to failing wall. The bathroom looks like it's never cleaned, and I'm not sure it's possible to clean with all the holes and repairs needed. If this is what the bathroom looks like, I'd hate to inspect the kitchen.

Let's start with the good: My wife and I really enjoyed our food. She got a scramble and I got eggs and hash browns. And we split a giant pancake, which was pretty good too! We sat at the counter and the two servers were very nice and attentive. Food was priced fairly. Now the bad: It took over an hour to get our food! At first I thought they were just having a bad day, but after reading other reviews, apparently this is normal. I'm not sure how a place like this stays in business with such slow service. The food was good, but not worth waiting over an hour for. I doubt we'll be back any time soon.

Go here, order pancakes, learn first hand what the expression "eyes are bigger than your stomach" means. Otherwise, lots of breakfast and brunch staples and a dance-y soundtrack. Good spot
Another visit and another giant pancake and a banger playlist
Returned for the pancake. Have you tried it yet? 🥞
Allow extra time on the weekend. Went on a Saturday and didn't wait long for a table, but waited nearly 45 minutes for eggs and pancakes. Waiting for food when it's crowded makes sense, but 45 minutes pushes that limit

If you like waiting over an hour for your food, this place is perfect!
Our sever didn’t check on us the entire time we were sitting down and seemed like he couldn’t care less.. The food was also just okay, but after waiting so long we were absolutely starved and needed something in our stomachs.
The only reason we are giving 2 stars is because a different, much nicer staff member knocked off $4 from our check for the wait.
Definitely not worth the visit in my opinion

🍞☕ I almost didn't walk over her from WYSO. Now I always will. Willalby's Cafe hit on every piston. The coffee is unexpectedly great, because I expected a humble diner joint - but this is barista level. It was so good with soy milk and they have almond, too. The service was awesome, fast and so friendly. I got the vegan French toast with all the fruit they had, and the veggie sausage was homemade, hot, meaty, and frigging delicious 😋. The toast was crispy outside, soft inside and had a buttery center in the stack. WOW. You guys are kicking ass. I'll be back!!

Walked in on a Monday around noon for brunch and left quickly after sitting down. Asked if they had iced coffee, the server working was outwardly rude and mean, didn’t seem to want us there so we left. I’ve been in before and it was a totally fine experience, hoping it was just an off day for the staff member.

Wasnt impressed. My main dishes were overdone and burnt. I feel that both cook and waiter could tell my waffle was crispy but still served us brunt food. My waffle was like a curton. So my friend gave me some French toast and that was burned on one side too. When brought up, I could tell waiter energy shifted and he was already stand offish. First time here was great. Black dude waiter was friendly and woman cook made good food. 2nd time made me not want to waste money there.

Willaby’s is a small cafe in the Madison area. When I first heard that their pancakes were huge and spectacular, I was a bit skeptical. But they really are large! However, keep in mind that while they’re big, they’re also thinner than typical pancakes, giving them crispy, light edges. I had been hoping to order a breakfast burrito, but it wasn’t on the menu, so I went with a banana walnut pancake and a combo with scrambled eggs, sourdough toast, and corned beef hash. Interestingly, the corned beef hash was cooked similarly to the pancake—thin and spread out for maximum crispiness. It was a unique take on hash that caught my attention. There seemed to be only one cook and one waitress during my visit, so service was a bit slow, but it was worth the wait. While I wouldn’t mind returning if I find myself in Wisconsin again, I don’t feel particularly compelled to go out of my way to revisit.

This place satisfies the simple little diner vibe I have been craving ever since I moved to Madison. I love an intimate, simple just come in grab a seat and a coffee diner. The food was phenomenal on top of it. If I wasn't moving so soon, Willabys would have secured itself a new regular. Just know it's cash only before you go. There is an ATM, but if you plan ahead for that if you want to avoid any atm fees associated with your card.

I’ve been to just about every breakfast place in Madison, and I can say without a doubt Willalby’s has by far the best breakfast/brunch in town. You can tell they use coconut oil instead of processed seed oils, which makes a huge difference. Portions are also very generous for the price, which is hard to find these days. Service as well was the best I’ve seen in Madison, all the staff members are kind and considerate. They’ve won my loyalty, I won’t be going anywhere else!

Yesterday my husband and I were in Madison, so we decided to stop at one of our favorite cafes, Willalby's Café (formerly known as the Willy Street Diner). Our waiter took our order for Apple Cinnamon French Toast, a Mushroom and Cheese Omelet plus beverages. And then we waited. Thirty minutes went by, and we still had not received our order. The waiter assured us our food would be on its way. Customers who came in after us had their orders prepared and served. Another thirty minutes went by with the waiter assuring us our order would be coming shortly. Finally, after an hour of waiting our waiter delivered our order to our table. The fault for the long wait lies with the cook. He was not preparing the meals in which the staff posted them. He was preparing whichever ones he felt like first while ignoring the waiter’s instructions. In the end, there was a confrontation between our waiter and the cook. The food was fresh and delicious but suffice to say we will not be returning to this cafe again.

This place is great. It's a simple, no frills breakfast diner. It's cheaper than almost any other breakfast spot in town.
While I could go on and on about the good food and good service I've received here, a few recent reviews have trashed this place so I will take an opportunity to push back on the negativity:
1) Wait times. This is a small establishment and there are 1 or 2 people cooking and another 1 or 2 serving. If you show up at a peak breakfast time (9a-12p weekends), you are going to have to wait awhile. Be patient or wake up earlier.
2) Cash only. There are signs posted. Plus, if you are spending money to dine out, you can pay a $2 ATM fee without whining.
3) Closed at 6:20am on a Thursday. Hiring isn't easy nowadays, and believe it or not workers can get sick and not make it to work. I'm sure a place like this can't afford to have a ton of employees on payroll, so they make the difficult decision to close if they cannot staff the restaurant. It sucks, but it's a reality we live in right now. They've been closed for me, too, at times when they are advertised to be open; this gives me a wonderful opportunity to branch out and try a new place. Look at the bright side.
Go when they open. Bring cash. Joke around a little with the waitstaff and they will joke back with you. Be patient. And last but not least, order a god damn pancake. This place rocks. Don't let the crabby people leaving negative reviews turn you away.

before arriving i had high hopes after reading the other reviews people have written, but this place was a terrible waste of my time. my sister and i ordered a small meal each, and although i would guess it was their prime time of the day, it took ages for our food to be done. we ordered one waffle, two eggs, bacon, and hash browns. this took over 45 minutes and several others were receiving food before us even after arriving much later. the food was great once we finally received it, but then it was a battle of paying our bill. this business is cash only, so of course, i had to use the atm they provided, which obviously included the $2 fee as well. after getting the cash, we had to battle with ourselves to get the waiter’s attention. most of the staff had very positive energy, but a lot of the energy was being put into dancing and counting how many tips they made, rather than helping the already impatient customers. as a madison local, i will never be going there again.

The food at this cute little place is outstanding!
The pancakes are not only huge, but they have an amazing flavor and perfect mouthfeel that makes them stand out from your average breakfast joint. All of the other food was spot on as well.
The service left a lot to be desired, however. It took over an hour for us to get food out to our party of 6 and no one else was there.
Parking is also a challenge in this area, as it's mostly just street parking on a busy street.
If you're not in a hurry, this is a great brunch stop.

The diner itself is cute and cozy. The food is good. Unfortunately the service is horrible. We waited an hour before our food arrived. In the first thirty minutes they changed our order because they didn't have the supplies needed to make the order. It would have been nice if they would have checked to make sure the supplies were available before the beginning of the order instead. Tables came in after us and were served and left before we had our order arrive. Our order was missing and I had to tell the waitress that we had been waiting for an hour. We figured after waiting an hour we should at least have our tea comped from the bill as a courtesy. We tried to politely tell the waitress what was wrong and she wouldn't listen and talked over us and walked away while we were talking. We talked to another employee and told him of the situation about having to wait an hour for our food and the order not being correct. We are vegan and the order came wrong, there was real butter on the toast, not vegan butter. We were also missing food from our order. The guy insisted it was vegan butter because the menu said so, not actually checking with the kitchen. After we talked with the guy (either the manager or owner) he agreed to take the tea off our order. He came back to our table and told us that this is just how their restaurant runs and actually told us because they comped our tea to not come back. Both our waitress and the guy were insulting and minimizing, saying everyone has to wait long, I come from a family of professional restaurant people, one being an executive chef, another a sous chef, even at peak hour in a restaurant you shouldn’t wait over thirty minutes for food, much less over an hour. If the order isn’t correct, it should be made so. They didn't treat us good at all. They were not courteous or friendly, once we lodged a complaint. They don't seem to take feedback well at all and blame the customer for their mistakes. Where's the accountability? I've never been treated this way in a restaurant. The way they treated us was as bad as posting a sign on the outside saying you can't come in if you identify a certain way we don't agree with.

You want breakfast food? Go here. Just do it. Good food, good portions, good prices, good service. Bring cash. Honestly this might be my favorite diner in Madison. It isn't trying to be fancy or do anything new it's just a really simple delicious menu.

The food was very good, but the service was nonexistent. We waited almost 50 minutes after ordering, with no one even refilling water or any explanation. Ok atmosphere but very loud.

Pancakes are MASSIVE and delicious. Other meals are also large portions. The Chocolate Chip Pancakes here are my reference (10.0) for other pancakes. We've eaten here no less than a 1/2 dozen times over the past 4 years, and ALWAYS have awesome service, and delicious food. Keep in mind that good things can sometimes take time, so it might take awhile to get that delicious order out to you.

This restaurant is so nostalgic!! But, it needs a good deep cleaning.
A roach visted our table.
Please do better.

Recently visited in over 8 years. Still the same quality of food which I appreciate. However, the current team (2023) that works there made my day. I walked out full, satisfied, and accepted. I walked out with a smile on face.

Great food at a great price. The people there are also great as long as you treat them with respect. Tommy remembers my name every time even though we only go to willaby's a few times a year.

My family came in for a Saturday breakfast based on the amazing reviews. The staff was sooo incredibly friendly and nice, but we waited at least thirty minutes for food after ordering and it came out ice cold like they had forgotten about it and it was not good. The coffee was delicious as I had three cups while waiting.
As we were sitting, a small unidentifiable bug was crawling up the wall next to me and I killed it with my napkin. Then a much larger (unable to be killed with a napkin) beetle-type bug went scurrying up the wall next to my daughter and hid behind a torn tiger picture. We threw cash down and ran for it.

Awesome gentlemen named Aaron gave the best service I’ve ever seen. He greeted us as we walked in even though the whole restaurant was full. He has a beautiful humorous and attentive personality. Food was excellent as well. Great job to Aaron and the kitchen staff as well.

Though simple, this was easily (for lack of a better word) the best breakfast I've had in Madison. On top of the great food and service, the music and atmosphere was -- somehow chill and lively at the same time. Don't ask me how that's possible, just check it out.

Pretty standard diner fare, but cooked well. Friendly staff, and a warm environment in an old school diner. Real folded omelets, which are hard to find at most diners.

Had a delicious meal. A casual environment, which we loved.
Staff was great. Food was terrific. My friend is vegan, and I'm not...I had some of her vegan dish and it was delicious. There's something here for everyone at a reasonable price. I wish I had place like this near where I lived.
They do cash only, another thing we loved... A true old school diner for the middle class folks.

There are three strong vegan options on the menu, friendly staff, and lively atmosphere.
They were out of vegan gravy for the biscuits and gravy, it's cash only which they didn't mention till the bill came, and the seat yourself system means it's a 50 50 shot getting a table as opposed to having to sit at the counter.

This is a great find for vegans! This little classic diner has quite a few great options for us! We got french toast and biscuits and gravy. They also have tofu scramble. The prices are really reasonable and there's no upcharge for the vegan options! The savory vegan options actually cost less than the non-vegan ones!
