The most disgusting food I ever tried. Quesadilla was soggy. Chicken was raw. I ordered chips and guacamole. The chips were old and stale. The guacamole was so brown and soup consistency due to the tomato. Spit out the food after one bite. What a waste of money.

First time here and we got the quesabirria tacos and the loaded nachos. The best Mexican food ive ever had! I got a mango margarita and it tasted like fresh blended fruit - it was SO smooth! The service was amazing and everyone was so friendly. On our way out we grabbed a tres leches cake slice and it was the perfect way to wrap up the experience. Could not recommend this place enough!!

I usually have a good experience here, especially when the teen boy is helping me he’s polite, attentive, and provides great service. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was the opposite. The woman in her mid-30s made me felt like she gave me an unfriendly look the moment I walked in and her attitude throughout was unwelcoming. She didn’t seem interested. It really makes a difference when staff treat customers with respect, and in this case, her service was far from what it should be. If you don’t like your job you should quit ! Not give customers unprofessional service

We’ve ordered take-out from here a few times and it was always good. Today we went in to the restaurant and it was DELICIOUS! I started with a mango margarita and my husband got a michelada made with Pacifico…if it were Saturday instead of Sunday, we’d have had a couple more. We got the choriqueso as an appetizer, it was very tasty, but the homemade chips were amazing. For entree I got the empanadas de barbacoa and the hubby got gorditas de asada, both authentic, flavorful and obviously homemade. One warning, the green chile is spicier than the red! Still good, but definitely has a kick! We brought home flan & pastel de tres leches for dessert and even though they look tasty, we will probably have to wait til tomorrow to try them when we’re not so full.

Absolutely amazing food!!! Couldn't get enough of the fresh warm chips and guacamole! Our server was very kind but got a few things wrong with our order (we didn't ask for them to be changed and just ate/drank what we got), and the dining room was filthy when we arrived -- we had to ask that our table be re-wiped, plus there was a large table next to ours that needed to be cleared and wiped, but it was still not clean by the time we left after dinner. We'd totally go back for the food, though: delicious and lots of it. A great value!

It's a quaint grocery / restaurant. The service was great and the employees were smiling and very polite. The restaurant offers tables and counter service. I tried the breakfast burrito. It was light in the meat portions, definitely did not notice the chorizo. The sour cream was abundant and I was really put off with the pickled jalapenos. IF I ordered it again I would definitely leave out the sour cream and would really wish they could use fresh jalapenos and up the meat portions. I'll give it another try though. Wish they had a drink menu as they serve adult beverages.

Yeah, I’m just simply obsessed with their steak burrito California. I’m a rice girl, through and through, but the way the French fries are cooked somehow so perfectly while smothered between a delicious cheesy sauce and tortilla perfection… MMMMMM. I get this burrito maybe twice a week, so beware of addiction. But really anything here is good, from the hurache to the quesabarria tacos. I bought 6 of their freshly made pork tamale's and they were FANTASTIC. I had never had them before but my husband has and he hasn't been able to find any in the Madison area that he likes. He loved them and so did I! I found out about these while shopping at Woodman's and tried them today, Sunday, because that's when they are freshly made. Definitely would highly recommend!

Every time I come in I'm greeted with a smile and a hello rater in English or Spanish. Real family owned feel which makes it that much more homey. Food is lights out! Tried Zavala's after googling "tamales madison" and seeing all the positive reviews on here.

Tamales are Sat/Sun only, are already made and available at the front counter, still warm. They are VERY GOOD. Surprisingly, a little spicy. And thats a good thing.

We also got the enchiladas dinner. OMFG so good. Pretty spicy, white folks will prob complain about it. Absolutely delicious. Have to mention the beans, obv home made (not from a can). Great mixture of spices. Also spicy and so delicious.

Wrapping up, we got the tacos. Carne asada, onion and cilantro. Pretty good. Better than most of the other places in town for sure. Not legendary taco truck level, but pretty good.

Excited to try the tortas next time. The menu picture looked amazing. Given how good the enchiladas and beans were, I bet the torta is gonna be mind blowing.

No me gustó los cobros ocultos que me hicieron.
1. Te cobran un dólar extra por cada taco que consumas si es de birria o lengua en mi caso así fue. ( bueno eso supongo porque ni siquiera está escrito porque es ese $1 extra)!
2. Te cobran los chips
3. Te cobran el 20% del total de tu cuenta por gratitud ( propina). En este lugar la propina no es voluntaria, es impuesta!!!

No me importa haber pagado $79 por unos tacos, una quesadilla y un sope. Lo que no me gustó fue que abusen del cliente poniendo cargos ocultos.

I’ve been going here probably the last 4 months when we stumbled upon it.. the Nacho Deluxe WAS perfect for two people to share. We’ve gone here so much that the employees know us by face and know that we order the nacho deluxe.
AT FIRST, the food (our norm) included Nachos deluxe & Steak Tacos- it was perfect. The portions were great, price was affordable, and most importantly it was delicious!
However, over the course of the last two months or so our food has been horrible. We keep going back because the Nacho Deluxe is just the right size for the right price. The size of the nachos has gone down dramatically, chips are stale and most importantly…. The cooks do NOT READ what you request. They make things how they normally would make them. If you specify that you don’t want something- they need to make sure to honor that because it could have something to do with religion, dietary needs or be life threatening. They do not honor that, and don’t look at what you request. That has gotten worse in the last month or so.
Most recently today, we placed an order and asked for rice on the side. They forgot our rice on the side so we went to get it .. the container had a hole in the plastic top and there was PIECES OF PLASTIC IN THE RICE. There ended up being rice on the nacho.

The Staff who work at the register are usually pretty responsive and great. They tend to make it right by doing what they can.

Really good food, definitely one of Madison's top Mexican restaurants. It's a grocery store and restaurant, and the whole place is well-kept and roomy.

Lastly, we got the pork pozole. The soup was pretty standard, good, and a bit spicy- we really don't think it needed to be spicy though. They loaded in tons of pork, which was so tender. Load the pork and hominy onto a tortilla chip with crema, dip in the soup, and it serves, truly, as a delicacy. This pozole is unmatched by any chicken pozole in Madison, because of the meat.

Overall, I definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves Mexican food.

I saw the reviews and I had to try this place.  They have been open a little more than a year.  It has a small Mexican grocery section when you walk in with seating available just past that.  Nothing fancy, but the food was delicious and hot.

I came for the $2 Taco Tuesday special, but also ordered the Huarache Estilo Moroleon $14.99.  It is a huge folded homemade corn tortilla (see pictures).  Choice of a meat as well no extra charge.  I went with shredded chicken, but the steak and carnitas (pulled pork) and beef all looked like great options!  It comes with grilled onions and a grilled jalapeno pepper!

I had a ground beef and a chicken taco.  All the food seemed very authetic Mexican and a big step above other Mexican restaurants.

A hidden gem that is how I will describe it.
We haven't been there before, and we didn't know they existed until I google for Mexican Restaurants.
What a surprise....food is fantastic.
They have a small grocery section, but definitely, their business is th3 food.
My wife got "empanadas " and they were good , almost perfect , just like home.
I got "huarache " and be careful with this plate because you have to be extremely hungry or share with someone. It worh the try .
I tested pozole, and it was good. It was flavored, salty, just the way it should be.
We went back yesterday, the empanadas are so good that my wife ordered it again. I got tacos barbacoa(beef, steal, tripa) all good and delicious.
Try it, you won't regret it!

I had high expectations, tacos were decent, i am always excited to squeeze fresh lime on but the limes they gave me were so dry that they were white!!! Nobody would look at these limes and decide they are good to serve to a paying customer.

Came here with my friends ! I love coming here everyone always greets you here with positive energy and good service, lady at counter is very generous! Even if the store is a bit busy she is always positive ! I understand most people will be a bit angry but that’s how business will be we don’t always get the most kindest people but we have to understand that they are trying there best ! That’s why I don’t make it a big deal because I understand how restaurants can be busy and stressful sometimes ! But the lady at the counter and the guy always have a positive attitude thank you !!

Recommended by friends. The tacos were great, especially the pastor and best of all the carnitas!! There’s a cute dining room beside the little market. Service was quick and super friendly! Loved the horchata! Got a burrito with asada to-go and it was huge! Can’t wait to go back to try out more of the menu!

Zavala's is an unassuming tiny cafe and market tucked into the corner of a strip mall that one could pass by a hundred times without spotting. But then you would miss out on this family-owned gem. Tasty food, reasonably priced, with attentive service (okay, mine was the only occupied table). Can't wait to return and try the flan.

Ordered the chicken torta for pickup and it was amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the torta was huge! The atmosphere reminded me of the taquerias in Phoenix and Tucson where I grew up. Highly recommend!

This is easily the best taco spot in Madison. The pictures speak for themselves. Food is top notch and the service is always very attentive. It’s a casual sit down spot, or perfect for grabbing takeout. More authentic than your usual Tex Mex spot. The birria is the best I’ve had anywhere, but everything we’ve tried has been excellent.

El lugar es pequeño, no es un restaurante con el que puedas llegar con toda la familia y encontrar mesas disponibles, más bien es una pequeña tiendita con lo básico como sodas,snacks y cosas que encontrarias en una pequeña marketa. Los tacos y antojitos son excelentes y deliciosos, si tienes hambre y quieres algo rápido y sabroso este lugar es el indicado, voy seguido y veo que la gente pide comida en su mayoría para llevar o si vas solo o en grupo pequeño de dos a cinco personas pueden encontrar mesas fácilmente. Sin duda es uno de mis lugares favoritos cuando voy de paso y se me antoja algo rápido y delicioso. Lo recomiendo ampliamente.
