The food here is very good. I usually end up getting the Korean BBQ tacos for appetizer and the bimbimbop for my main course. Also their black garlic ramen is delicious. The only thing I would have to criticize is how close their tables are, I can hardly walk by other tables without brushing up against them.

My daughter ordered online. Specifically asking for no eel sauce as she is allergic. I've added a picture for reference. She got home with her food and eel sauce was on her roll. She called Zen and spoke to the manager Jan explaining what happened, hoping to go back and pick up a new roll. Instead, Jan was unprofessional said nothing could be done and hung the phone up. My daughter drove back to Zen hoping for resolution. She then spoke to a gentleman named Carter who was rude, unempathetic, and unprofessional. My daughter explained the situation, showed him her order confirmation, and let him know she was allergic to the sauce. He stated " well we are not making a new roll so your going to just have to eat it and see what happens". I am blown away that this establishment would treat a paying customer like this. It wasn't like she was asking for a discount, or a replacement of her other food that was now sitting at home getting cold. All she wanted is what she paid for. What happened to giving your customers a good customer experience? My family and I frequently eat at Zen and I am shocked this is how they would treat a customer especially when it was their error. We will not be going back. And for the sake of their establishment, I hope they give these two inviduals the basics of customer service.

The food here is delicious and the drinks are great! My only recommendation would be not to go too late in the evening. Even though the hours say they’re open until 9:30, if you arrive around 8pm the servers start rushing you through your order and meal. It makes the experience feel uncomfortable, like you need to hurry, even though there should be plenty of time left to enjoy dinner.

One thing to be aware of: parties over six people automatically have gratuity added to the check. From my previous visits, the staff doesn’t always remind guests about this, which I personally find a bit distasteful. I think it’s always nice to give a heads-up when the tip is included.

Other than that, the food and drinks are excellent and worth coming back for.

We ordered a couple of sushi, sashimi, and nigiri platters, plus an appetizer and 1 drink each.
All of the food was very good!
The appetizer was shrimp ball. It was extremely tender, with a good flavor, a very light flaky batter. The only complaint is that it's a bit expensive for the 3 tiny pieces that you receive.
Sashimi and nigiri were all extremely fresh tasting, with no off odors or textures at all. At around $40 per plate, it is costly. However, the meals do come with both miso soup and the house salad. And there was plenty of food for us to bring home for another meal.
I've never been disappointed in the service here. They are attentive and quick.
I do find the atmosphere lacking. It appears clean and is tastefully decorated. But the restaurant is small, tables are packed close together, and seating is very functional but not necessarily comfortable. With the high industrial ceilings that are typical in downtown beloit, it echos and feels too loud for my preferences. With the total cost of a meal, I wish I was able to enjoy my time and the conversation.

This is my favorite place for sushi (I Luv Sushi was closer but closed) Usually everything is spot on. I went there for my birthday with my husband and son and was disappointed with the food. They were out of soup. My husband and I always each get a next generation. The two plates were obviously not the same just by looking at them. One was missing sauces and was very plain, the other one was how we usually get it and was delicious. My son ordered chicken fried rice, he was disappointed because there were too many peas which he tried to take out, but eventually gave up. We ordered two OMGs. That smoky flavor was not there plus the partially crisp rice was absent. I think it had too much sauce which prevented it was cooking right in the foil. I'm hoping they were just having a bad night.but

We went dine in on Friday, we both know that they are closing at 9.30PM. We are from other city( 2 hours away )and sorry that we couldn’t arrived earlier because we have to wait for our daughter done school. we arrived there 8.50pm and order everything by 9pm. Our server gave us a notice that last call is 9.15pm. Which is mean we still a little time to dine in (am I right)
First of all food. I gave 3 stars because food was ok over load sauces. Waygu was chewy.
Second, service… server is nice enough but could tell it did not seem genuine but I asked for soy sauce.. and they probably clean already so our server gave us a gluten free soy sauce instead maybe too much work for them to give me a regular soy sauce.
Last, when we arrived there.. All the staffs gave me a look like ugh “late customers” I get it that why we were rush eating and try to get out asap. And we are not plan to go back again.

But if you're eyeing the Korean menu, maybe keep scrolling - which is kinda ironic given the Korean ownership.

Service is where it falls apart when it comes to consistency; it can be painfully slow, with staff chatting instead of focusing on customers. Some servers seem untrained and uninformed about the menu.

The atmosphere is good, but the seating layout is packed and feels cramped, prioritizing quantity over comfort. A little more effort in customer service and ambiance could go a long way—smiles and attentiveness would make a big difference.

The prices are steep, especially considering what you get but that's what happens when there's no other competition in town.

Overall, would I go back? For sure! Is it perfect? No. But when you're craving for sushi and don't want to drive a distance, it gets the job done. 3/5 - its good enough to keep me coming back, but there’s room for improvement.

I have always recommended Zen to anyone wanting great sushi. But after today, I don't think I will. There were 5 of us in our party. Myself, husband and 3 kids. They charged us 18% gratuity. It was awkward from the beginning when an employee came to our table to ask how old we all were. We also asked to have separate bills and that didn't happen. Our waitress was nice and they took our empty plates right away but didn't ask if we needed anything or refills on our drinks. The food was good but the way we felt when we left was that we were not welcomed and we were an inconvenience to them. Not something I would like to experience again or recommend to anyone else.

I'm not sure if this place is rated so well because of the lack of options near by, but this is not good sushi. The fried rice had green beans, peas,and corn. It was over seasoned and not good. The edamame was mushy, shumai was ok. Ginger salad had some kind of dairy in it, not the best. Miso soup was 98% broth and was salty. Monkey brains was mushy. Other dishes not even worth mentioning. Just over all wasn't good. Disappointed.

I have gone to this restaurant several times and enjoy eating their sushi. The restaurant is very nice, but I have always found their service to be pretty slow, especially on a weekday. I typically go for their lunch specials and couldn't remember whether or not they do them on weekends. I checked the website which stated they went through Saturdays. I decided to go with my family on Saturday and was told by the waitress they did not have lunch specials. We mentioned the website and she told us they've been trying to get the manager to change it for almost two years. We were very disappointed by this because we ended up spending quite a bit more money than expected.

A very extensive menu with some unique offerings like flaming sushi rolls. I enjoyed a rainbow roll and seaweed salad. Both were generous portions with good, fresh taste. My dining companion had a bento plate, which was very large, with multiple offerings to accompany his bulgogi beef. It's his favorite go-to on their menu.
We strolled in at a busy time on a Saturday but had no wait for a table, and we even found a parking spot right across from the entrance. I was impressed by the amount of employees and their attentive service. All in all a pleasant experience that I look forward to revisiting.

my wife’s dinner was excellent. Mine however was very mediocre. It was a
noodle stir fry with chicken
and vegetables. The noodles and sauce were tasty but there couldn’t have been 2 dollars worth of chicken in that dish. Small pieces that could only be over done and had to be searched for not good. We were early and plenty of room and the hostess sits a T shirt guy at the next table, close enough I should have asked him how his day was. I have been going to Zen since 2016/17 and have never once had a meal I wasn’t happy with. The servers are always so nice as well. Started with an interesting take on a Tuna Tataki app and a nice G Joy sake from a very decent sake and wine offering … he offered up a custom preparation that was artistic and meaty as well. This was followed by the best inland Chef’s choice sashimi platter I’ve ever had. Great mix of fish, exceptionally well presented. I was disappointed with my order. The hostess seemed upset and not very social, perhaps she was having a bad day, understandable! My primary issue was with the food. The crab rangoons were overpriced for the small portion, and they didn’t contain any cream cheese. I’ve never experienced crab rangoons that were that small and made without cream cheese and just straight imitation crab. One of my sushi rolls was a bit messily made and hard to eat due to the pieces being so large, and some of the salmon was very dark, so I was concerned. It ended up being fine to eat. I will not order from here again, which is too bad as I got a sushi boat here once years ago and it was awesome!

Zen does sushi and what it means very well.
Please note that I have had sushi and much more during many business trips to Japan. My standards are high, and not surprisingly, at home, I am often disappointed. I am neither foodie nor food snob. This is just me being lucky to have had the best. Freshness is the foundation.
Zen is some of the best I've had in the US, including a couple of small strip mall family restaurants that cater to those who know just by remaining true to the ways of their heritage.
Zens chefs are meticulous about presentation, which is a nice barometer of quailty as there is pride in their work.
And while Zen does nothing unique for a competitor in this market, they are successful because what they do they do very well.
The atmosphere is contemporary, and the service is much better than average.
They have outdoor seating.
We'll be back again.

The worst sushi I’ve ever had. I was starving and I LOVE sushi as it’s always my go to. I read the reviews and was very very excited to try it.
Went for lunch around 11:30am. The food specially the seafood was NOT FRESH at all! And I asked the waiter how old the seafood was, she responded it’s fresh on daily basis.
I didn’t believe it but I wish it ended there only. I actually got sick the same day and that’s why I promised my self to leave them a bad review.
It was pricey for the quality of the food. Please save your money, time, health and your love for sushi and avoid this place.

Our food was not good. Sushi was underwhelming. Crab Rangoon and Pineapple rice were lame. Not authentic. Not well prepared. The teriyaki chicken was awful. Atmosphere on the patio is nice, but inside is cold, loud, too bright, and crowded. Service is okay…servers standing around doing nothing; chatting with each other. Could be more attentive. Go to literally any other Japanese restaurant in the area. It will be better. Does not hold a candle to Shogun or Mark’s Fusion.

Honestly; It was my favorite restaurant and the last two times I visited I received a bad surprise, the quality of the food was not the same, the flavors and proportions of rice and fish in the sushi were very far from my expectations.

Really delicious sushi the flaming OMG rolls are fantastic. It's a little cozy if you eat in restaurant, so I know I couldn't take my grandma with her walker, but they do have carry out and that's normally what we do, definately worth a visit.
