The building was formerly an auto mechanic shop, which explains the name and gives the place a unique, quirky style. I’d read rave reviews about their fried chicken sandwich and donuts, so I decided to stop by. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich ($9) and a chocolate cake donut with buttercream icing ($1.50).

The sandwich was excellent—the breading was thick and crunchy, which I really enjoyed. The cake donut was also delicious, with a rich chocolate flavor and smooth buttercream on top, and the price is reasonable.

There’s plenty of parking, a few outdoor tables with umbrellas, and some indoor seating as well. The staff behind the counter were super friendly and welcoming. If I’m in the area again, I’d definitely stop in for another fried chicken sandwich.

My wife and I stopped in today for lunch. I got the 2 piece chicken. She got the north side spicy chicken sandwich. We also tried the mashed potatoes with gravy and the mac n cheese. Holy smokes! Easily the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The Mac n cheese was fantastic. Mashed potatoes and gravy were top tier. My wife said the chicken sandwich was SOOOO good. No funky weird pieces like you find in other sandwiches. Everything appears homemade, down to the pickles on the sandwich. So of course with the food being so good, we had to get some donuts to take home and guess what??!! Those are freakin delicious too. Sorry for the missing bites lol.

It’s so hard to find a good breakfast sandwich in Madison, especially on the east side, so when I recently discovered this place I was blown away. The English muffin breakfast sandwich (which can also be done on a dang DONUT) was amazing. It was like $5, can’t beat that!! I also find the lore behind the place funny. It used to be a car shop and literally looks like one, all the way down to the garage door. Definitely recommend trying it out!

Had a great experience at Zippy Lube. The cashier was very friendly and our food came out quickly. The cauliflower sandwich was a very unique option and my partner and I both enjoyed the mac and cheese. Holy moly. I can't with this chicken sandwich. It is the best chicken sandwich I've had in my life. I've heard people describe flavors as "zippy" before and I get it now. The pickles? I came just after 11 when they start serving chicken. Welcoming, friendly counter service. Shout out to Harvey who took my second order. Decaf and vegetarian options. Was great to see staff preparing food and having fun with each other. Delcious coffee, donuts, and fried chicken was phenomenal. Great vibes, parking on-site, single bathroom.

Indoor seating is a little tight and it can get busy. If you want to sit and study or do work, you may have to wait a moment for a spot. Which, most people there were grabbing food, so the wait was not long. I initially got my own table right away.

Or, you can strike up a conversation and share a table-- which I did and connected with a lovely stranger.

Overall, a fantastic place with a unique aesthetic, outstanding coffee and food, and a good place to hang out.

Watch me read this place for the filth it actually is…this place is horrible the food gives gas station and this place is overly priced and portioned horribly what the hell do you mean a small Mac and cheese is barely one bite? They aren’t really welcoming and talk to you like you are slow when you try to ask questions about the food and makes it seem like it’s rush.

Don’t even get me started with how un organized this place is the lines are overly long they need two cashiers and a drink maker instead they have one poor person working on register AND doughnuts and someone making drinks I’ve waited more than 15 minutes for a drink and not to mention their drinks suck and are also overly priced. The doughnuts need a lot more work and health regulations because why is an almond doughnut which is a nut BTW next to and touching the other doughnuts which is contaminating them? That’s not professional at all and they use the other tongs to pick the nut doughnuts or the ones people may be allergic to? NO you need one specific tong.

This place isn’t spacious especially for the people in the front they constantly bump each other and it just doesn’t really work out.

My personal opinion I think they should close this place down for a bit and re establish this place was too much a quick job and not a community they just need to do better honestly this could be a good thing for the north side but it’s not giving and maybe again I’ll try it out

Cool new spot on the Northside! Coffee, donuts, and fried chicken?! We had a couple chicken sandwiches and 2 piece, great bun and perfectly fried piece of chicken (maybe lacking a tad bit of salt), good sauce and pickles! Fried chicken was really good, crispy and seemed slightly different in breading compared to chicken sandwich! Hot chicken was really good too, not too spicy and a little sweet! Went for some chicken here, cuz the whole town was shut down by the police for some one coming tot he airport. Glad it all happened because we got some of the best fried chicken and mashed potatoes we’ve had in a very long time. The staff are all super friendly and the place is small. Amazing hidden gem. We came in on a Friday and ordered a few things. The breakfast sandwich with sausage and bacon on a cinnamon sugar bagel was amazing and would definitely get that again. We got a half dozen donuts and would get the apple cider again along with the triple chocolate and key lime (even though it was not filled). The strawberry was alright but plain and probably wouldn’t get again. The iced latte with caramel was perfect; exactly how a coffee should be made. They have different milks too like almond, whole, 2%. The place looks cool with very good theming and they have good merch too. For how much we got we spent $40 with tip which isn’t bad.

Cute little cafe, love the theme, and love the color schemes. I had gotten the chocolate buttercream donut, and it was a 9/10. The buttercream was perfect, not too sweet at all. The mac and cheese was delicious. 9.5/10 it tasted garlicy, like a garlic bread mac and cheese. The iced latte I got was a 6/10. More on the milky and creamy side couldn't really taste the espressos. Also, got the spicy chicken sandwhich, and it was amazing 9.5/10 crunchy, juicy, and perfect spices. Let me start off by talking about their cauliflower “wings” because we went there for a chicken sandwich and these alternative chicken bites took over the show. We love trying new things and cauliflower bites aren’t anything I’ve ever cared for but now its definitely in our list.

The chicken sandwich is a must try, if you like the heat I recommend their spicy chicken sandwich. It is consistent with the flavor since the first time we ever got it.

To be completely honest We tried all their donuts when they first opened and we didn’t care for them, little too dry and very small selection.
I can tell you for a fact that wasn’t the case when we went recently. I completely regret not grabbing more passion fruit donuts and the strawberry chocolate donuts because they were definitely unique and full of flavor. Their donut selection doubled in size if not it tripled. Very happy to try the new flavors definitely need to go try all the other ones.

The only complaint I have is the large side portion of the mac and cheese is over priced. Unless they make their pasta from scratch that side is too small for $8.

Coffee seems basic, probably like one person reviewed — out of a vending machine. Or at least conventional. I’m better off going to the Willy St co-op down the road for 1.99$ 12oz of Organic coffee and Organic half n half. Plus the donuts were not as good as I’d expect from a shop that makes them in house, but they were not bad for conventional ingredient donuts. Decent treat for cheaper than a really good Bloom Bake Shop donut, however Bloom wins at high quality healthier donuts.

The customer service was welcoming and personable, the atmosphere with music was lively. It was nice to see them employing POC and seemingly enjoying their time. However I think their decor could use some touches — but fits their “food-out-of-a-car-shop” vibe.

Ben a cook helped us jump our car after hours and I love the food here. Been coming since last year and my go to is the 2 piece dark spicy north side. Just tried the gravy super good with mash potatoes. All together with coffeee less than 15$! Hard press to find a deal

The Mac & Cheese was tiny for $3. Do not buy a small, it’s not worth it…but the taste was great! & the quality of the cauliflower sandwich was good. Very delicious & fresh. I would say it was better than Dave’s Hot Chicken cauliflower sandwich. No napkins or spoons in bag.

$32 for 2 cauliflower sandwiches & 2 small Mac & Cheeses.

Have enjoyed Zippy Lube chicken several times. Tried their fried cauliflower yesterday. Very good and even better reheated in the oven the next day. Batter still crunchy!

My experience at Zippy Lube boils down to nothing but excellence. Food? 10/10. Chicken was moist the entire time I was eating it, seasoned well, and with a little of their "Zippy" sauce, really made the experience. Service? Phenomenal. The staff was friendly and had no issues carrying on a conversation of the food and area alike, even going as far as to recommend some other places for me to try in the area. A personal and heartfelt thanks to this business feels required.

I wanted donuts when I arrived but they were all out. The chicken was thick skinned. I prefer smoother chicken. I was enjoying the sunlight and the man rolled down the curtains. He asked me if the light was bothering me. It felt great.

They get very busy around the eating hours. So it's difficult to call ahead for an order to go. If you call when their not busy, they will take your call and you can order ahead of time. Remember they put Zippy sauce on the chicken sandwich. I ask for no sauce, It can get a little sloppy. Awesome sandwich though!
